Are Kanye And Jay-Z Delivering Watch The Throne Too Soon?

Critics weigh in on whether ‘Ye risks fans gorging on product while they’re still feasting on acclaimed Dark Twisted Fantasy. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Kanye West should be basking in the critical acclaim of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. He scored a number of year-end accolades for the project, including recognition from us here at MTV News. But a mere two months after the LP’s November release, the rapper’s already in promotional mode for his next project, Watch the Throne, a joint effort with Jay-Z . How did everything happen so fast? Jay-Z, of course, has been a prolific MC, having released six consecutive #1 albums, from 1998’s Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life to 2003’s The Black Album. And after a self-imposed exile, Kanye has proved to be just as productive as his mentor, including West’s three-month-long G.O.O.D. Fridays series, during which he released a new single each week. Back in October, during a lengthy sit-down, West casually told MTV News’ Sway that the Watch the Throne EP had evolved into a full-length album. “We putting out a whole album now,” he said. “We had done five [songs] so far, but then a few of them kind of were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry, Jay. But we got some more, and we’re going to the South of France at the end of the month to just record new ideas. But we’ll probably be done with the album in a day.” According to ‘Ye, Jay-Z only has to write 10 verses (a hint?: the album will only be 10 songs), and West is collaborating with a bevy of producers, so his load will be substantially reduced as well. Another question, however, is whether fans will flock to the project so soon after snapping up West’s extravagant solo release. The early answer seems to be a resounding yes. “I think it’s smart because I imagine the two albums will be very different sonically, so it won’t be a case where one overshadows the other,” Complex senior editor Toshitaka Kondo told MTV News. “Also, when an artist is hot, their fans can’t get enough as long as the output is good. Young Money has had five or six different releases, including the Young Money album and projects from Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the last 13 months, and I can’t see how it’s hurt any of them. I can’t see the sales of this album necessarily cannibalizing the sales from Kanye’s [last album] anyway. It’d be one thing if they were dropping within a few weeks of each other, but given how fast people consume music these days, six months is plenty of time.” Perhaps, though, instead of debating whether it’s too soon to put out the album, the more poignant thing to consider is this: arguably the two biggest stars in hip-hop want to make an album together ! “All artists need to find a way to combat falling record sales and meet fans’ desire for constant gratification — a new album from two of hip-hop’s biggest stars isn’t going to hurt,” the Amplifier ‘s Caryn Ganz said. “It could even renew interest in Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and encourage people to revisit it,” she said. “All the recent collaborations between these two have been very strong, like ‘Run This Town’ and ‘Monster,’ and Kanye seems to bring out a fascinating artiness in Jay. They just have to be careful that they don’t push it too far in an artsy, esoteric direction and lose their whole street base. But the timing doesn’t seem strange to me at all — strike while Kanye’s still making headlines for the right reasons, rather than wrong.” Do you think it’s too soon for Kanye and Jay to drop their Watch the Throne ? Kanye West Turned Defiance Into Victory In 2010

Via Twitter, G.O.O.D. Fridays and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ‘Ye came out on top this year. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kanye West performs at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images So, this Kanye West fella, you might have heard of him. He basically Swift-boated his career at the 2009 VMAs, went into a self-imposed exile and then triumphantly returned nearly a year later with what many have called the best album of 2010. Huh? In just over 12 months, West baffled critics by going from zero to hero, while still lashing out at the media and, with stunts like his #kanyeshrug hashtag, essentially proving he’s the same guy he always was. “I think the thing with Kanye, he really just stuck to the same script, which is basically, Iove me or hate me but the music is gonna be so great you have to deal with me,” Complex editor-in-chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. “And that’s been the story of his career since the beginning. I think this year, he happened to be loved or hated in such extremes at the end of 2009, going on a self-imposed exile in Hawaii, he really created a currency in the intrigue with what he was doing.” What he was doing was assembling a barrage of hip-hop’s best producers — including Q-Tip, the RZA, Pete Rock and more — and a diverse range of collaborators to help put together his artistic denouement: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The collection was bombastic musically and browbeating lyrically. The first shot, “Power,” was a sonic middle finger to his detractors. ‘Ye looked at his life and career and took stock of his place in the pop-culture ranks. It was a manifesto, of sorts, in which West declared that he was aware of his flaws and mistakes but everyone else can take them or leave them. “He really figured that great music will change things,” RapRadar and RESPECT. magazine’s Elliot Wilson explained. It wasn’t just the music, though, that helped Kanye come back into people’s good graces once again. He took to Twitter to voice this thoughts, sometimes in amusing non sequiturs, sometimes in revealing bunches of dispatches came in bunches, like when he addressed, once and for all, the Taylor Swift incident. In words that he couldn’t seem to put to melody or properly convey to a talk-show host, West simply took responsibility, apologized and moved on to the next track. And then he proceeded to change the subject with his string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases online. “He did select press but he made a lot of noise online,” New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. “I think he understood quickly how to make the best use of that medium.” But what the critics and everyone who catches themselves constantly humming songs from Fantasy agree on is that “he really brought it all back to the music,” as Callahan-Bever put it. “At the end of the day no Taylor Swift incident or ‘Today’ show appearance can take away from [that].” Related Videos Stories Of 2010 Related Photos Kanye West’s Amazing Year Related Artists Kanye West

Nicki Minaj Surprised By Success: ‘I Never Saw All Of This’

‘When [Lil] Wayne first called and reached out, I thought it was a joke,’ MC admits to MTV News. By By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj and Sway Photo: MTV News What’s a girl without her dreams? Nicki Minaj has realized more of hers than most this year, from releasing her highly successful debut LP Pink Friday to becoming MTV News’ #6 Hottest MC in the Game . And, the Queens MC said she’s still surprised by her achievements. “A part of me expected it, because I wanted it so bad, but I never saw all of this,” the MC told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “You know, I never would’ve imagined that I would’ve signed to [Lil] Wayne, number one.” On Monday, Minaj took time between takes while filming her video for “Moment 4 Life” with Drake to talk about becoming the queen of rap’s reigning crew. “[I] never imagined that Young Money/Cash Money would be the hip-hop crew,” she said. “To be signed to them is one thing, but to be signed to them when they’re at their height, when this has become like an insane movement? No, I never imagined that, because when Wayne first called and reached out, I thought it was a joke. “I’ve wanted this for a very long time, but I couldn’t — not even with a crystal ball — I could not have predicted these things would really happen this way.” Minaj has even outsold, if we’re counting weekly sales, one of her idols: Mr. Kanye West. West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy dropped November 22, the same day as Pink Friday . And while West garnered bigger opening-week numbers, Barbie has outpaced his album sales per week for the past 14 days. To date, Minaj’s release has sold 658,439 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. “Girl power!” she said, with a giggle. Are you surprised by Nicki Minaj’s success this year? Kanye West Is MTV News’ Man Of The Year

Undeniable music, brilliant tweets and one ambitious short film put ‘Ye back on top in 2010. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: D. Dipasupil/Getty Images He didn’t sell the most albums (that was Eminem ) or have the year’s hottest single (that was Usher ), but at the close of 2010, there really is no other choice for MTV News’ Man of the Year than Kanye West . (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) After all, no one dominated the pop-culture landscape quite like he did. From his self-imposed hiatus to his triumphant return to his tantrums (and, of course, his tweets), everyone was talking about West in 2010. No one completed as compelling a comeback story, and most importantly, no one released an album as searing and soaring as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. And he did it all his way, without compromise or contrition. It truly was 12 months to behold. West came into 2010 as a villain, still stinging from the public smack-down he received following the Taylor Swift debacle , and he leaves it as a hero: not only the year’s most celebrated artist, but its most compelling and visionary too. And if that’s not worthy of an award, well, then we don’t know what is. King Kanye reigns supreme. Here’s a look back at a very memorable year in his life. 2010 Highlights : West’s story actually begins in September 2009, after he stormed the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards. His actions were lambasted by everyone from Donald Trump to Jimmy Carter , and as a result, he tearfully told Jay Leno that he needed to “take time off.” And he wasn’t kidding. ‘Ye canceled his much-anticipated Fame Kills Tour with Lady Gaga and all but disappeared from the public eye, leading to rumors that he had checked himself into rehab (or, alternately, fled to India ). He briefly appeared onstage with Beyonc

MTV News’ Best Albums Of 2010: The Readers React

MTV.com users sound off with their opinions on the list and their picks for the year’s top releases. By James Montgomery Some of James’ picks for the best albums of 2010 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, when MTV News published my annual Best Albums of the Year list, I wrote that “2010 may very well have been the best year for music in a long, long time … to the point where making a list of the 20 best [albums] was darn near impossible.” I wasn’t kidding, either. In fact, I was so sure I had missed some really great albums that I asked my readers to sound off with their picks. And, boy, did they ever! Over the past 24 hours, I’ve gotten tons of responses from fans all across the world (most of them angry, of course), each wondering why their favorite artist didn’t make the cut or, if they did, why they weren’t #1. There were thinly veiled threats, at least one call for me to be fired, a whole lot of curse words and even some rather spirited debate between Eminem and Kanye fans over just whose album was better. Of course, mixed in with all that madness, MTV.com readers also managed to suggest some very worthy albums that I had missed, make compelling arguments and even paying me a compliment or two. So I’d like to think that my list was a success … because, at the very least, the response it garnered proved that, unlike any other year in recent memory, 2010 really was bursting with great music — music people obviously felt very strongly about. Needless to say, I was impressed. So in order to keep the conversation going, I’m re-publishing some of the best responses here. But don’t think the debate is over … if you still feel like your voice hasn’t been heard, sound off in the comments below. And then head over to our Newsroom blog, where you can vote for your favorite album of 2010 . Because, really, I could argue about this stuff all day. On to the comments! “Props to MTV for putting Kanye at number 1 and for putting Rick Ross on the list. Teflon Don was incredible and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was classic.” — Lila “This list fails. Recovery is a better hip hop album than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Sure, Kanye’s got the better beats, but Eminem has the better lyrics, flow and overall delivery than Kanye. That’s what hip hop is really about, sure you need good production, but lyricism is more impressive.” — Ryan “This list is perfect. Eminem’s album wasn’t that good and mainstream people need to stop believing that sales equates to quality. Kanye West put out the best album this year, hands down. MTV isn’t the only one putting it at the top of the charts and if you didn’t buy it, that only reflects your own ignorance and lack of taste.” — Moze’s Mother “Great list, I’m surprised that is made by MTV. I do not understand why people think that if an album sold more must be better than others, music is not about sales or popularity, it is about quality.” — Juan17x “I just want to say that MTV did a great job with this Top 20. And it’s great the indie groups like The National, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Beach House etc were recognized. Music these days [is] infused with synths, autotunes, and other forms of manipulation. Sometimes it’s nice to just listen to the bare-bone basics of guitars, drums, vocals, and the occasional piano or other instrument. And Sufjan Stevens is great too! It was interesting to see Linkin Park’s album up there, but it might really be like Radiohead’s Kid A. Perhaps by listening to the tracks more often then it would be more easy to understand.” — A.Pearl “I haven’t heard of 70 percent of these clowns … No Rihanna? No Drake? No Diddy or Nicki Minaj? Surely James Montgomery must be living under some kind of rock … a huge one. Eminem at 14? (way too low). [The] only thing I can live with is Kanye at number 1. But it’s not worth ignoring these other artists!” — Tom “I’m happy that Kanye’s number 1 (the album’s super dope), but what about Cee Lo’s The Lady Killer, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager? ” — Mendy “Yeah! Vampire Weekend is in the top 5! YES! Grrreat, Contra is totally amazing. Amazing job you guys!” — Diana “ROBYN SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!” — Antoine “I cant believe Drake isn’t on this list.” — Kanye is the Best “[Deftones’] Diamond Eyes is definitely missing.” — Lumen “You forgot perhaps one of the biggest: 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War. … The single ‘Kings and Queens’ won [the] VMA [for] Best Rock Video as well as [the] EMA [for] Best Rock. Singles ‘Closer to the Edge,’ ‘This Is War,’ ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Kings and Queens’ have been in Billboard ‘s Top 10 Alternative and Rock categories as well as iTunes all over the world.” — Ana “Why isn’t How I Got Over by The Roots on this list? After all it is nominated for a Grammy. I also think that Eminem’s album was a lot better than Kanye West’s album. Distant Relatives by Nas & Damian Marley should also be on this list. I am a huge Linkin Park fan and I know their new album shouldn’t be on this list. Hands All Over by Maroon 5 should be somewhere on this list too.” — Facebook User “The editor of this article is a big fool and should be fired for putting up articles like this … No Drake, no Susan Boyle, no Taylor Swift, no Lady Gaga, no T.I. and these are the people making real good music that people can actually spend their money [on] and buy without regretting like I did [with] Kanye`s album. People actually think ‘Runaway’ is a great song just because of the lengthy video. That’s Dumb!” — Kenneth “Yo, Kenneth. Chill. We get it. You like music that sells well. You like ‘Glee’ soundtracks, Susan Boyle, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls records. That’s cool man … we happen to like music that appeals to us personally and possibly other intelligent, educated people with an ear for more progressive tastes. [It] just so happens, at the end of the year, journalists’ and critics’ lists are going to skew more towards our sensibilities than yours. Her second release, The Gift, will once again take the pole position next week with sales of 243,000, giving her a five-week total north of 1.3 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The only new release to crack the top five is T.I.’s No Mercy, which comes in at #4. The album sold 159,000 just weeks after the King of the South reported to prison for an 11-month sentence tied to a probation violation from his 2007 federal weapons case. Also breaking into the top 10 is the “Tron Legacy” soundtrack from helmet-rocking techno duo Daft Punk, which moved 71,000 copies in its chart debut. The top 10 is otherwise just a shuffle of the usual suspects. Taylor Swift keeps her grip on the #2 spot with Speak Now, which sold 201,000 copies, pushing her past the 2.3 million mark in less than two months. Swift is followed by the “Glee” Christmas album (#3, 193,000), grade school reality-show opera singer Jackie Evancho’s O Holy Night EP (#5, 149,000), Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday (#6, 82,000), Josh Groban’s Illuminations (#7, 75,000), another “Glee” collection, Vol. 4 (#8, 74,000), and Rihanna’s Loud (#9, 71,000). After just two weeks in the top 10, Kanye West’s well-reviewed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy falls to #14 as sales shrank by 39 percent to 67,000. The Black Eyed Peas had an even harsher comedown for The Beginning, which drops 10 spots in week two to #16 (62,000, sales down 48 percent). Hard rockers Hinder enter the fray at #37 with All American Nightmare (35,000) while deadmau5 squeaks in at #47 with his album 4×4=12 (27,0000) and British soul siren Duffy hits #72 with her second album, Endlessly (18,000). My Chemical Romance are marching the wrong way on the chart with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, which drops 27 spots to #87 in its third week, selling just 15,000 copies. That’s gangbusters compared to season nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze, who continues to struggle to get traction for his debut, Live It Up. The LP slides another 10 spots to #133 on sales of 9,000, giving him a one-month total just shy of 72,000. The “Glee” Christmas album is tops on the iTunes albums chart, besting T.I., who settles in at #2, followed by Kanye, “Tron,” deadmua5, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Hinder, Rihanna and the “Burlesque” soundtrack. The singles chart once again belongs to Katy Perry and her smash “Firework,” with Mars right behind with “Grenade.” They’re followed by the Black Eyed Peas’ “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Rihanna and Drake’s “What’s My Name,” Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” T.I.’s hookup with Eminem, “That’s All She Wrote,” Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow,” Trey Songz’s “Bottoms Up” and Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight.” Next week should present the first challenge to Boyle’s domination with the arrival of late pop icon Michael Jackson’s first posthumous studio album, Michael, as well as new discs from R. Kelly, Diddy-Dirty Money, Ciara and the major-label debut of “Idol” runner-up Crystal Bowersox. Related Artists T.I. Susan Boyle Taylor Swift
