Kanye West’s ‘Runaway’ Is MTV News’ #2 Song Of 2010

From its debut at the VMAs to its accompanying short film, everything about this Top 25 Song made our jaws drop. By Kyle Anderson Kanye West Photo: Getty Images For a song that landed at #2 on MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 , Kanye West’s “Runaway” starts awfully humbly. It will be best remembered for the epic short film that accompanied it or the jaw-dropping debut it made at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. (Or perhaps it will be noted for its four-minute Auto-Tune freestyle that caps off the album version.) But for all that sweep and bluster, “Runaway” kicks off with a single tap of a piano key, kicking off one of the most epic, jaw-dropping, honest and thrilling pieces of music to hit the popular airwaves all year. Those single notes slowly start to string together and give way to the drums, which are all low rumbles and twitches. A vocal sample stabs its way in, shouting “Look atcha!” And then Kanye starts to croon his series of heart-on-his-sleeve mea culpas. All that goes down in the first 30 seconds, and it only gets better from there. “Runaway” was produced by West, Emile, Jeff Bhasker and Mike Dean. The track made its debut at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, which saw West (wearing a flashy red suit) standing over a sampler and playing around, as though the audience just interrupted him in his studio. A series of ballet dancers (and Clipse member Pusha T) may have joined him onstage, but that performance was all about West’s massive personality and the scope of the song. The first verse of “Runaway” is pretty staggeringly naked, even for a lyricist as honest and direct as West. “She found pictures in my e-mail/ I sent this girl a picture of my di–,” he raps in the opening line. “I don’t know what it is with females/ I ain’t never been too good at that sh–.” But rather than sound authoritative and boastful (like he does on “Power” ), West sounds resigned to the idea that he’ll probably never figure women out. It’s a double-edged sword, because while he’s letting women off the hook because he recognizes that he’s no good, he also gives “a toast to the jerk-offs” in the chorus. In fact, the sexual politics of “Runaway” only intensify as the song rolls on. When Pusha T shows up for what has to be one of the best guest verses of the year, he lays out the compromise that has to occur whenever you get involved with a guy like West (who may have “a good girl” but is still interested in “them hood rats”). “You can leave or live with it,” Pusha T raps. “Every bag, every blouse, every bracelet/ Comes with a price tag/ Baby, face it.” The good life is waiting when you take West’s hand, but keep in mind that his yang has a yin as well. The internal narrative of “Runaway” isn’t particularly complex, but the same can’t be said of the short film that West made to accompany the track. “Runaway,” which premiered on MTV back in October, tells the story of a phoenix (as in the mythical beast) who falls to Earth and falls in love with West but eventually must destroy herself because the pressure becomes too great. It’s a complicated and visually stunning piece of art that will go down in history as one of the most ambitious clips in the history of music videos. Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of the most challenging and satisfying albums of this young century, and “Runaway” is the centerpiece of that album. It’s gorgeous and powerful, representing both a distillation of West’s psyche and an external exploration of the year he put behind him. It only got a vague whiff of the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (“Runaway” peaked at #12), but there was scarcely a song more thrilling and important released in all of 2010. Prince Pops Up On ‘The View’

The Purple One gives Justin Bieber advice during a surprise visit to ABC’s daytime gab-fest on Thursday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Prince on “The View” on Thursday Photo: ABC When you’re Prince, you’re pretty much given free rein to stop by wherever you please — even if it’s busting up a daytime TV talk show. The Purple One gave the ladies of ABC’s “The View” an unexpected visit Thursday morning (December 9), when he showed up to gift the gab queens with tickets for his Welcome 2 America Tour dates in New York. The pop legend hung around for a bit, but instead of perhaps giving the ladies a preview of his show by playing a song or two, the “Hot Thing” singer squeezed in at the table for a little “Hot Topics,” the show’s popular opening segment. Coolly walking out in dark, round glasses, a bedazzled sport coat and a single glove, the singer elicited screams from the audience — and caused “View” co-host and Prince mega-fan Sherri Shepherd to nearly keel over — when he randomly strolled onto the set in the middle of the segment. “First of all, these are strange hours for rock stars,” he quipped upon arrival at the 11 a.m. ET broadcast. The singer then explained that he was in New York for his upcoming shows, and pumped up his band “that plays like a jackhammer.” “You gotta come check it out,” he said of the December concerts. The iconic crooner graciously handled the fawning from Shepherd, obliging her with a hug and a “Sherri, I love you.” The ladies also asked Prince about another major fan, Justin Bieber, who once said he wanted to have a career as lengthy as the 52-year-old hitmaker. The superstar gave the teen sensation some sage advice, pushing the importance of staying thoroughly educated about his work. “The key to longevity is to learn every aspect of music that you can, and I hope that he does pick up an instrument and gets a good teacher,” he said. He then prepared to make his exit, saying, “I’mma leave y’all. I haven’t had breakfast yet.” But before he skipped out, Shepherd playfully asked the singer for his glove and made one final request. “I have wanted to make love to you for my whole life,” she pouted. The directness definitely woke up the singer, who sprightly popped up from the table, quipping, “On that note,” and then dropped the mic as he hustled off the set as quickly and as mysteriously as he came. In October, Prince took to Harlem’s Apollo Theater to grandly announce the kickoff of his Welcome 2 America Tour , which is slated to feature many of his talented musician pals like Maceo Parker, Mint Condition, Cassandra Wilson and Janelle Mon

Drake ‘OK’ With Being Dropped From Kanye West’s ‘All Of The Lights’

‘Kanye’s creative process is ever-changing,’ Drizzy tells Shade 45. By Alvin Blanco Drake Photo: MTV News Even if Drake and Kanye West aren’t best friends, Drizzy still counts the Chicago rapper/producer as one of his musical idols. Drake dropped into Shade 45’s morning show Thursday (December 9) and chatted it up with host Elliott Wilson on a variety of topics, including being removed from the final version of Yeezy’s “All of the Lights.” An early version of the song, whose crowded guest list includes Elton John, La Roux’s Elly Jackson, Charlie Wilson and Ryan Leslie, had previously leaked that included Drake, but the Toronto rapper is nowhere to be found on the version that appears on West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. “Kanye’s creative process is ever-changing,” Drake said, adding that he doesn’t know why he was removed. “We make music differently. I make what comes to me and I hate changing it, whereas ‘Ye will change something 30 or 40 times to get it perfect. To each their own, and the change was to put all those people on it, and I wasn’t one of them. That’s completely OK.” Since Drake came to national prominence with the release of his So Far Gone mixtape, the MC has been compared to West — not just for his introspective lyrics, but for his overall sound as well. Back in August, Drake’s main producer, Noah “40” Shebib , relayed a story about Kanye West cursing him out for using his production style. Add to that mix the fact that Drake and Kanye have appeared on relatively few songs together — including “Forever,” with Lil Wayne and Eminem — and conspiracy theorists feel there must be tension between the two. “I can never sit here and tell you that’s not one of my idols, that’s not one of my favorite rappers,” Drake said of Kanye during the Shade 45 interview. “Whatever energy I’ve ever felt is irrelevant. When you ask me, ‘What do I think of Kanye West,’ I’mma always have something positive to say.” The host then interjected by asking, “But sometimes the energy is not always where you want it to be?” “I feel like we can co-exist,” Drake answered. “I feel like hip-hop is broad enough that we can both exist and give great music without feeling like it’s one or the other. I might be the only one that feels that way, though.” Drake stressed his reverence for Kanye West. At only 24 years old, the Canadian MC said he missed the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac era, and Yeezy is a personal favorite artist whose career he can personally trace since its inception. Big ups to Nicki, she worked hard,” he continued. “She represents the female gender, and she basically delivered. There were a lot of odds against her and she defeated all of that and, for her to deliver like that, I gotta say congratulations.” True to form, when news of her sales reached the animated MC , she was overcome, Maine recalled. “She was excited. Where Does Kanye West’s Fantasy Rank Among Biggest 2010 Debuts?

Taylor Swift’s Speak Now leads the pack with more than a million sold in its first week. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage By now, you’re probably aware that Kanye West is once again king of the Billboard albums chart , as his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sold nearly 496,000 copies to grab the top spot. Fantasy is West’s fourth straight album to debut at #1, and its first-week numbers are most definitely eye-popping — but they’re not the biggest of 2010. That honor actually goes to someone with whom West is well-acquainted, Taylor Swift, whose Speak Now scored the year’s biggest debut, selling an incredible 1,046,718 copies in its first week back in late October. Eminem’s massive Recovery — which is the best-selling album of 2010, with more than 3 million copies moved — is next, as it sold more than 741,000 copies when it was released in June. Soldier of Love, Sade’s first album in nearly a decade, posted the year’s third-highest debut, selling nearly 502,000 copies in February. West’s Dark Twisted Fantasy is up next at #4, followed by Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now, which sold nearly 481,000 copies in its first week. Rounding out the top 10 are Drake’s Thank Me Later (#6, nearly 447,000 copies), Nicki Minaj’s just-released Pink Friday (#7, 375,000 copies), Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond (#8, 329,000 copies), Susan Boyle’s The Gift (#9, nearly 318,000) and Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 (#10, nearly 283,000 copies sold). Falling just outside the top 10 are the year’s two biggest rock debuts: Jack Johnson, whose To the Sea sold nearly 243,000 copies when it was released in June, and Linkin Park, who sold more than 241,000 copies of their A Thousand Suns album in September. John Travolta, Kelly Preston Welcome Baby Boy

Son Benjamin was born on Tuesday night in Florida. By Gil Kaufman John Travolta and Kelly Preston Photo: Getty Images John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston have plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The couple welcomed their son, Benjamin, on Tuesday night at a hospital in Florida. A spokesperson for the actors confirmed the news to E! Online in a statement. “John, Kelly and their daughter Ella Bleu are ecstatic and very happy about the newest member of the family,” read the statement. “Both mother and baby are healthy and doing beautifully.” The baby weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The superstar duo announced in May that Preston, 48, was pregnant with their third child together a little more than a year after 16-year-old autistic son Jett died of a seizure in January 2009 while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas. Preston recently told People magazine that the family was in serious preparation mode as her due date approached. “I’ve been cleaning out everything in the house,” Preston said in September. “Ella has been helping too. She’s looking forward to being a big sister.” Travolta has been taking a hiatus from acting in the wake of the news about the baby and has kept his schedule light, appearing as the bald-headed baddie Charlie Wax in the little-seen thriller “From Paris with Love” alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers earlier this year. At press time it did not appear that Travolta had any other roles in the can or on his upcoming schedule. Nicki Minaj, Justin Vernon, Teyana Taylor join ‘Ye at Bowery Ballroom to celebrate album release. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West performs at Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday Photo: Erez Avissar NEW YORK — Kanye West is nothing if not a showman, and on Tuesday, the rapper celebrated the release of his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, with a performance that was as daring and dashing as it was fraught with traces of the petulant MC of the past. Shortly after midnight, West took to the stage at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan accompanied by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and femcee/singer Teyana Taylor. The trio launched into “Dark Fantasy,” the spirited opening number of ‘Ye’s new set. Sporting a skin-tight dress, Taylor admirably belted out the chorus to the track and stuck around to ride shotgun with the G.O.O.D Music chief. “New York City, make some noise,” West told the gathering crowd after the opening selections. “Today, I’m gonna do My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. ” From there, West breezed through “Gorgeous,” “Power” and “All of the Lights,” the latter of which was a rumbling effort. Nicki Minaj joined Yeezy on stage for some album-release unity when the DJ spun “Monster,” sans Jay-Z. Rick Ross arrived onstage for the Bink-produced “Devil in a New Dress.” When West teased the first few chords of “Runaway,” the crowd — which included Diddy, music executives Lyor Cohen and Sylvia Rhone, ?uestlove, comedian Aziz Ansari and Selita Ebanks — erupted with approval. The dramatic rendition was easily the night’s highlight and featured artist Pusha T looked possessed on the microphone. Meanwhile, West was like a mad scientist pounding away on his MPC machine, creating musical backdrops to match almost each song. After over an hour of performing, Yeezy closed the proceedings with a stirring, slowed-down rendition of the song “Lost in the World,” the song he’s slated to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday . He reappeared on stage shortly after for an encore and powered through brief versions of “Christian Dior Denim Flow” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” Although he finished with “Good Life,” it may have been the defiance of “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” that stuck with ‘Ye after the performance, when he spoke to the crowd. “As you know, it’s been an extremely hard year for me,” he began. “But getting back to music, G.O.O.D. Fridays, and the album … I never thought I’d say this, I wanna thank the magazines for perfect scores across the board. I always felt like I could do anything. “To do 100,000 digitally,” Ye continued, remarking on his first day tally in sales from Monday. “And slated to do 600,000 the first week. I’m not here to do mother—-ing politics. I’m here to make music. I’m not here to talk in no interviews; no one ask me any stupid f—ing questions.” Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Kanye West’s Dark Twisted Fantasy: Everything You Need To Know

As ‘Ye drops his unrepentant magnum opus, we look back on his most eventful year, from Taylor Swift to Twitter, from ‘Runaway’ to ‘Today.’ By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: Stefania D’Alessandro/ Getty Images There is perhaps no album released this year that comes with as much emotional baggage — or backstory — as Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, a 70-minute magnum opus of high emotion and even higher stakes. Born out of a 14-month period of intense personal struggle and immense public scrutiny, Fantasy is West at his most unhinged and unrepentant. But perhaps the album’s greatest accomplishment is that it perfectly mirrors the turbulent, trying times in which it was made: The beats are bigger, the boasts bolder, the highs higher and the lows, well, they’re practically subterranean. So, with Fantasy finally in stores, we decided to look back at the road that led to this day. From Taylor Swift to the top of the charts, it’s been quite a ride but, ultimately, ‘Ye survived and thrived. He pushed himself and the boundaries of hip-hop, and by doing so, transformed into arguably the most vital artist in music today. And he did it all without explaining himself to his (many) detractors. Hate him or love him, Kanye West is a survivor. And with his new album, he’s proved once and for all that he’s here to stay. On September 13, 2009, West crashed the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, grabbing the microphone from her and famously proclaiming, “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Beyonc
