State Of Florida Charges 13 In Hazing Death Of FAMU Drum Major These “kids” could do up to six years behind bars for taking part in the hazing of Robert Champion . Florida prosecutors on Wednesday charged 13 individuals in connection with the hazing death of a Florida A&M University drum major last November, in a case that has heightened scrutiny of violent rituals on college campuses across the country. Lawson Lamar, the state attorney for Orange County, said at a news conference in Orlando that 11 of the people face felony hazing charges, which carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison. The remainder face misdemeanor hazing charges. Mr. Lawson said he would not release the names of those charged, since most of them have not yet been arrested. The death of the drum major, 26-year-old Robert Champion, was “nothing short of an American tragedy,” he said. “We know that Robert Champion died as a result of being beaten” and “his death is not linked to one sole strike but is attributed to multiple blows.” Mr. Champion collapsed aboard a bus in Orlando after a hazing incident following a football game against rival Bethune-Cookman University. The medical examiner’s office in Orlando ruled the death a homicide, caused by internal bleeding resulting from blunt-force trauma. Mr. Champion, who was previously healthy, died within an hour of the hazing incident, according to the medical examiner’s report. An autopsy found “extensive contusions of his chest, arms, shoulder and back,” the report said. In a statement released after the charges, Solomon Badger, chairman of the Florida A&M board of trustees, and university president James Ammons said, “We are vigorously working to eradicate hazing from FAMU and doing everything within our power to ensure an incident like this never happens again. Our hearts and our prayers are with the Champion family and the extended FAMU family as we all continue to deal with this tragedy.” What a terrible tragedy. Dallas Police Ticket Transgender Woman For Using Ladies Room A Dallas transgender woman was issued a ticket for using the women’s restroom at an area hospital. Parkland police cited Paula Witherspoon, whose legal name is Paul Witherspoon, for disorderly conduct on April 25. “It was definitely humiliating, degrading,” she said. “I felt like I was being discriminated against.” A Parkland Hospital representative said the hospital received a complaint from a concerned female patient about a man in the women’s restroom. “This is 2012, and I’ve been transitioning since 2006, and I’ve never had a problem until I went to Parkland Hospital,” Witherspoon said. Witherspoon said she doesn’t even remember seeing anyone else in the restroom until she walked out. “There was a lady there that said, ‘That’s a man.’ I just ignored her and kept going,” Witherspoon said. Minutes later, a Parkland officer came over and cited her, she said. Witherspoon said she offered to show the officer a transition letter from her doctor that states, “She is expected to use facilities consistent with her external presentation, which is female.” But Parkland police told her they have to go by what is on her license, Witherspoon said. Under Texas law, Witherspoon must have acted “intentionally or knowingly for a lewd or unlawful purpose” to be cited with disorderly conduct. “I went to the bathroom, took care of my business, washed my hands and left,” Witherspoon said. “I didn’t even see anyone.” Parkland Hospital released the following statement: “Because of the complexity of the issue, the incident is currently under review. Parkland strives to treat patients, visitors and staff with dignity and respect, as well as provide a safe environment at all times.” Anti-discrimination laws in 16 states and the District of Columbia provide protections for transgender and gender non-conforming people, but Texas is not one of them, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union, which is calling for lawmakers in New York to pass legislation that will offer such protections. This broad truly ain’t isht ! A disgraced Portland nursing assistant has been banned from Facebook and other social media sites after posting a photo of a dying patient’s buttocks. In addition to being fired from her job, Nai Mai Chao also recently spent eight days in jail and had her nursing license revoked following a two-day trial. Convicted of invasion of personal privacy, Chao was found to have posted graphic photos of patients on Facebook and to have written derogatory comments about them. A coworker, who recognized the dying patient by the bandages on his bedsores, reported Chao to her supervisors and she was arrested in September, according to OregonLive.com. The 26-year-old Chao denied taking the pics, but admitted posting them. “It’s a good lesson that we need to be responsible about things we are posting online,” Kelley Cloyd, a prosecutor assigned to the Multnomah County’s Gresham office, told OregonLive.com. During the trial, jurors were shown a handful of photos including two that contained human feces, according to the Oregon news website. The jury deliberated for just 30 minutes. As part of her conviction, Chao must avoid all social media sites, including Facebook, Google+, Twitter and MySpace. She also cannot take pictures of anyone without their “explicit” consent, according to OregonLive.com. Her name was entered into a national database that prohibits her from obtaining a nursing license anywhere else in the U.S. Chao, released from jail on Friday, must also write a 1,000-word letter of apology. The victim won’t be able to read it – he died two months after the incident. So disrespectful! SMH… How dumb is this broad?
