Miss Universe 2018: Who Took Home the Sexist Crown?

Somehow, in the year 2018, beauty pageants still exist. It remains a confounding fact that women are paraded around on stage and judged for their bodies and their brief answers to very broad and stupid questions by a panel of random judges. But still… they do exist. And a rather major beauty pageant was held on Sunday night. So… who took home the crown of Miss Universe 2018? Name other than Miss Philippines, Catriona Gray! The new and beautiful champion beat out 93 other hopefuls in a star-studded competition, including runner-up Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green and the second runner-up, Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutiérrez. The victory caused Gray to break into tears. The theme of the 67th Miss Universe pageant was “Empowered Women” and it was judged by seven women including former pageant winners, businesswomen and a fashion designer. It also included the first-ever transgender contestant. But the 24-year-old Gray – who was born in Australia and studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts – simply would not be denied her moment to shine. Even though Miss USA actually tried to steal she spotlight a few days earler… … but acting like a spoiled American snob. Late last week, Sarah Rose Summers came under fire for making comments about two non-English speaking contestants during one of the show’s rehearsals. Joined by Miss Australia and Miss Colombia in an Instagram video filmed on the preliminary night of competition, Summers spoke openly about Miss Vietnam, H’Hen Nie, and Miss Cambodia, Rern Sinat, and their struggles with English. As you can see below, she mocked their ignorance: Sarah Rose Summers, Miss USA, Mocks Pageant Contestants for Not Speaking English After the video went viral, Miss USA issued the following statement: @MissUniverse is an opportunity for women from around the world to learn about each other’s cultures, life experiences, and views. We all come from different backgrounds and can grow alongside one another. In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize. My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another. I am grateful for opportunities to speak with Nat, Miss Cambodia, and H’Hen, Miss Vietnam, directly about this experience. These are the moments that matter most to me. Beauty pageants are dumb and sexist. But that doesn’t mean Gray didn’t deserve to win this one. CONGRATULATIONS!

Ebro Catches Heat & Issa Rae Makes Boss Moves: This Week’s Winners & Losers

Source: Gary Gershoff / Getty It was a win for Black people and people of color in the media this week with unique perspectives headed for the big screen! However, it was also a week of dreaded Twitter drama when one radio host decided not to ignore a serious subject. Check out the W’s below, then hit the next page to find out who lost in the Twitter battle. Winners Issa Rae Source: Craig Barritt / Getty In the last couple of years, the T.V. and movie industry has made huge strides in bringing diversity to the media. Movies like Black Panther and Get Out are the most immediate examples of Black people being in front of and behind the camera. However, history has taught us that the “Black fad” can be here today and gone tomorrow. One decade it might be sitcoms, the next it might be romantic comedies, and then, Hollywood can decide they’re done with the Blacks. Well Issa Rae is one of the people making sure this doesn’t happen thanks to an epic deal she signed with Columbia. According to  Variety , Issa’s production company, ColorCreative, has signed a multi-picture production deal that will allow the company to back projects from emerging diverse screenwriters. Certain writers will be announced in the spring of 2019 to work with Rae and ColorCreative to develop and write movies based on their original stories.   This is a huge move considering Black content that makes it to the big screen isn’t always original (e.g.  Black Panther, 12 Years A Slave, The Color Purple , etc.). With more original ideas, more diverse stories are sure to come that show the vastness of Black people and communities of color. If the flicks do well, they can also set the tone for more diverse films for years to come. “All of the projects we are working on are fresh and promising and we can’t wait to continue the work,” Issa said in a statement. “We hope to set a precedent and inspire the industry at large to invest in undiscovered talent, original IP, and fresh stories and perspectives.” Win, win, win.

Shooketh… Not Stirred: British Baddie Jorja Smith Brought Her Bloody Amazing Live Show To Atlanta

Source: Lourdes Sukari / Lourdes Sukari Jorja Smith Performed At The Tabernacle And We’re More Smitten Than Ever Our love and adulation for Jorja Smith is nothing new but after witnessing her perform in Atlanta recently we’ll admit we’re only further mesmerized by her buttery vocals and undeniable beauty. Source: Lourdes Sukari / Lourdes Sukari December 9th was extremely cold and rainy for Atlanta but Smith got us hot and steamy inside The Tabernacle, where she sang favorites like “February 3rd,” “Goodbyes” and “Lost & Found” for the crowd, who sang along enthusiastically. Her sweetness was definitely on full display as Smith paused at one point, asking her band to stop the music while a sick concertgoer got the help they needed, before resuming, to cheers and applause from the crowd. Source: Lourdes Sukari / Lourdes Sukari We could continue to wax poetic about her but we’re going to allow her beauty to speak for itself. Check out more exclusive concert photos by Lourdes Sukari when you continue.

8 Seriously Beautiful Photos Of Emerging Model, Lori Harvey

Lori Harvey was a baddie before Meek Mill shouted her out on his critically acclaimed fourth studio album , Championships . But now, she’s got all eyes on her. One look at her Instagram page and you’ll understand why the MMG rapper and criminal justice reform activist says he has Steve Harvey ‘s step-daughter on his Christmas wish list. But, too bad for Meek, last we heard Lori was engaged to longtime boyfriend pro soccer player Memphis Depay —and we’re pretty sure he isn’t going anywhere, although we could be wrong since breakup rumors have been floating around for a while now . In a 2017 interview with BET , Harvey said she ignored Depay for a year but he persisted after meeting the beauty at the beach: “He called me for like a year straight and I would not answer the phone. He would send me flowers and I would be like, ‘Thank you,’ and that was it. I gave him no play and he did not understand. So then, one day, I don’t even know why, I picked up the phone and was like, ‘Fine what do you want?’ and we just talked for hours, like all night. And then we started talking everyday.” After their romance progressed, Depay asked Lori to visit him in Manchester. On her behalf, her parents refused the invitation, but in perhaps her only rebellious move ever, Lori went anyway.” And ever since, she’s supposedly been head over heels in love with her future husband: “It’s like he just fell out of nowhere. He is just so perfect. Everything just happened so perfect. I honestly, genuinely feel like he was made for me. That’s my other half. I love him so much. Like, he could not be more perfect for me. We are literally just the same,” she said in the same interview. Hit the flip for more spicy photos of our #WomanCrushWednesday. And Lori, you single or nah? The people want to know.
