Sweet Baby Jesus Director Doesn’t Get Paid, Quits

And you thought you were underpaid. Director Peter Hewitt has quit the indie production of Sweet Baby Jesus because he allegedly hasn’t gotten any checks from producer Philippe Rebboah. Said Hewitt: “I kept giving Rebboah the benefit of the doubt but he never paid me.” Once a new director is “hired,” the film will star Pixie Lott as a ’70s version of Mary, who comes to Bethlehem, Md. to have the possible Second Coming. Sharon Stone was in talks to play Mary’s mother . Of course. [ Deadline ]

How Convenient: CBS Asks Pro-Stimulus Economist to Rate the Stimulus

As the Obama administration’s “Recovery Summer” crumbles, CBS’s Early Show on Thursday noted how the poor economic data has made many Americans deeply pessimistic about the future, with 37% saying that the economy “is in permanent decline.” So does that mean Obama’s $862 billion stimulus is a failure? Not according to economist Mark Zandi, who was interviewed by co-host Erica Hill. Zandi asserted that “the recession ended about a year ago, in large part because of the stimulus efforts,” and the current sluggishness was because “the stimulus is now fading,” and thus “the benefit to growth is winding down.” Of course, Zandi has been a consistent enthusiast for the stimulus, as far back as early 2009, a fact which was not disclosed today. “We need stimulus,” Zandi championed on the January 28, 2009 Early Show. “It’s about preserving jobs.” After President Obama signed the behemoth spending bill, Zandi was back on the February 18, 2009 Early Show: “It`s a reasonably good plan….The fact that policymakers are working really hard here, I think, is a reason for some optimism.” Viewers might have benefitted if CBS had paired Zandi with an economist who sees the data differently (for example, the Heritage Foundation’s Brian Riedl put out a good report last week on why rampant federal spending risks destroying the economy). On the flip side, Zandi did argue against the Obama administration’s scheme to raise taxes in January, saying that while it would be “reasonable” to do so in later years, the economic recovery is now too “fragile” to withstand such an action. Here’s more of how the August 26 Early Show covered the economy: # Report from correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, headline: “Economic Woes” REBECCA JARVIS: From housing to jobs to the health of the U.S. consumer, the latest economic data has slowed significantly, and it’s having an impact on how Americans feel about the recovery. According to the most recent CBS News poll, over one-third of Americans, or 37%, think the decline is here to stay. # Interview with Mark Zandi ERICA HILL: There’s so much focus on the Obama administration, on what was done on the stimulus package. How much of what we’re seeing in the economy right now is a direct result of the administration’s policies and of the stimulus? MARK ZANDI: Well, it is related. I think it’s fair to say the recession ended about a year ago, in large part because of the stimulus efforts. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the recession ended as the stimulus provided its maximum benefit to the economy. But, the stimulus is now fading — the housing tax credits being part of that stimulus, as an example — and so the impetus to growth, the benefit to growth is winding down, and that’s one of the reasons why the economy is slowing. HILL: So, would that be a case then, as you see the economy slowing, to extend those Bush tax cuts which we’re hearing so much about, and which has really become important as we move forward to the elections in November? ZANDI: Yeah, good point. I mean, I don’t think it would be wise to raise taxes for anyone in 2011 when the economic recovery is so fragile. Now, the President has proposed raising tax rates back to where they were [in the Clinton years] for people who make over $250,000 a year on a joint basis — that’s a very wealthy group, about three percent of the population. I think that’s reasonable, but only in 2012, 13, 14 — when the economy’s off and running. I wouldn’t do it in 2011 when the recovery is so weak.

Sophie Monk’s Cleavage Finally Makes It

It looks like Sophie Monk actually got invited to some sort of event, impressive. Normally she sets up a mock backdrop with logos all over it in her apartment and stages the red carpet pictures herself. Not this time. Although these could just be shots of her in front of a movie poster at the cineplex, I wouldn’t put it past her, but I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt this time and assume that she’s banging some producer who invited her. You’ve made it princess.

Mel Gibson Racist Tirade Against Oksana Grigorieva: Sickening and Caught on Tape

Mel Gibson told the mother of his child, Oksana Grigorieva, that she looks like “a f*king pig in heat and if you get raped by a pack of ni**ers it will be your fault.” Seriously. He was caught on tape . The always upstanding actor was secretly recorded by Oksana in the midst of their breakup and custody battle. The words “whore” and “c**t” were also used. Sickening stuff, honestly. The tapes were submitted by Oksana Grigorieva to the judge in the custody battle over their baby daughter, which has grown increasingly contentious lately. Mel Gibson: Even more of a disgrace than thought! They were recorded prior to May, when Mel and Oksana reached a custody deal – one that since fell apart, with her accusing him of being a deadbeat dad. Oksana, who says she has incendiary emails she kept from Gibson, has also accused Mel of punching her in the face during a heated January altercation. We’d like to believe that it’s more complicated than this, that there are two sides to the story, that there’s a chance Gibson is innocent of any wrongdoing. We’re not inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, however. After all, this disgraceful human being once said, after being busted for DUI, “f**king Jews … The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” His description of Oksana Grigorieva above? Par for course for pure scum. Follow the jump for more choice excerpts from Mel’s racist rant … “How dare you act like such a b!tch when I have been so f**king nice. I am going to come and burn the f**king house down … but you will blow me first.” “Look what you did to me … look what you are … look what every part of you is … f**king fake … f**king fake. You are the most synthetic person.” “Who the f**k are you?” Who the f**k goes to see a Mel Gibson film after this is more like it.

Claudia Schiffer, Matthew Vaughn Welcome Third Child!

It’s a girl for Claudia Schiffe. The supermodel and her film-producer husband, Matthew Vaughn, welcomed their third child in London Friday, according to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. Claudia and Matthew are also parents to Caspar, 7, and Clementine, 5, and will reveal her new daughter’s name next week, the publication says. Congratulations! The couple announced they were expecting baby #3 in January. Schiffer has said she “loves being pregnant … You can do whatever you want. You don’t feel guilty, because I used to feel guilty about having a day off,” she said. Another benefit? “ABefore my pregnancies, I was someone who had to watch their weight. I had a personal trainer, I was working out, I would never eat anything sweet,” she continued. “Anyway, I got pregnant and when I was breastfeeding it just came off.” “I can eat whatever I want. If I don’t eat enough, I will lose weight!” Good stuff.

MET Matchup: Gwen Stefani vs. Alexa Chung

As she deals with rumors of her husband’s infidelity , Gwen Stefani smiled on the red carpet with Gavin Rossdale last night. The singer looked beautiful, especially compared to Alexa Chung. No offense to that TV host and personality, but simply put: what the heck was she thinking at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala?!? Was this the worst fashion disaster at the event? Kristen Stewart might have something to say about it. Take a look at what that actress wore to the benefit. YIKES! [Photos: Splash News] Who looked better on the red carpet?
