Whitney Houston And Michael Jackson’s Deaths: Gone Too Soon

‘You will always remember where you were … when you heard the news,’ Simon Cowell says, echoing the sentiments after Jackson’s death. By Tomika L. Anderson Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston in 1988 Photo: WireImage Few people will forget where they were when they heard that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, had died in June 2009. And now, the same can be said for 1980s and ’90s Queen of Pop Whitney Houston . The beloved, long-suffering singer died Saturday inside a Beverly Hills hotel room, hours before she was expected to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party thrown by her longtime mentor Clive Davis . And while the official cause of death is yet unknown — what’s been speculated so far is that Houston may have drowned in the bathtub after taking prescription drugs, including Xanax — given her very public struggle with substance abuse, depression and anxiety over the past decade, it’s hard not to conclude that some drug- or alcohol-related accident may have been to blame. It’s much like, most recently, British singer Amy Winehouse and the late, great Michael Jackson before her, who died after taking a fatal cocktail of propofol and two other drugs. Also like Jackson, Houston’s sudden death — at the age of 48 — has stopped the world in its tracks, an enormous, one-of-a-kind musical flame forever extinguished. Even Jackson’s brother, Jermaine — who was first introduced to Houston years ago by Clive Davis at the same Beverly Hills Hilton where the singer passed away — could not help but draw the comparison. In an interview with CNN overnight, he paid tribute to the two fallen musical giants. “They shared a lot of success in the late ’80s and they were great friends,” he said. “I’m happy and honored to have been a part of their lives.” And oh, what lives they led: Like Jackson — who died at just 50 years old, after years of struggling with personal demons — Houston, too, had an intensely profound and everlasting impact on the world of entertainment. Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and countless other chart-topping entertainers have all name-checked her as their musical mentor, icon and inspiration: To date, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 170 million albums, songs and videos sold. In her lifetime, Houston achieved what precious few of them have or ever will — stacking an astonishing 415 awards, including six Grammys, two Emmys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 Billboard Awards. Her voice, in its prime, was a national treasure. “X Factor” mastermind Simon Cowell may have summed it up the best: On “Piers Morgan Tonight,” he said, “She was one of the greatest voices in our lifetime. Whitney was the number one singer that other singers want to emulate. People like that can’t be manufactured. They’ve either got, it or they don’t.” He added, “You will always remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news.” Like Michael before her, gone too soon. Clive Davis Mourns Whitney Houston at Pre-Grammy Awards Party

Clive Davis discovered Whitney Houston at a NYC nightclub when the singer was 20 years old. It was therefore eerie and appropriate that the artist passed away, possibly from an overdose on prescription drugs , just a few hours prior to the music producer’s annual pre-Grammy Awards party at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. The somber event did proceed as scheduled – with attendees including Britney Spears, Miranda Lambert, Brandy, Tom Hanks, P Diddy, Kim Kardashian and Mary J. Blige – and Davis opened the shindig with remarks abut Houston. “So, by now sadly, we have all learned of the unspeakably tragic news of our beloved Whitney’s passing. I don’t have to mask my emotions. Not in front of this room full of so many dear friends,” Davis said. “I do have a very heavy heart and I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me for so many years. Whitney was so full of life. “She was so looking forward to tonight… She loved music and she loved this night that celebrates music.” A moment of silence followed, with Diana Krall, Tony Bennett and Alicia Keys later performing. On tonight’s Grammys telecast, meanwhile, Jennifer Hudson will perform a tribute to Whitney.

Whitney Houston: Her Five Greatest Soundtrack Contributions

Late singer/actress’ work in movies was inextricably linked to her music. By Kevin P. Sullivan Whitney Houston in “Bodyguard” Photo: Warner Bros. The late Whitney Houston may have only appeared in front of the camera in four feature films during her lifetime, but when a soundtrack featured the singer, best-selling albums and awards followed in her wake. Houston’s soundtrack contribution became synonymous with chart-topping albums, some among the best-selling of all time, so in her memory, we’re taking a look back at some of her most significant musical efforts in film and the records she broke in the process. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” on the “13 Going on 30” Soundtrack Almost 20 years after its initial release, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” was re-released as part of the soundtrack for the 2004 Jennifer Garner film “13 Going on 30.” The album was made up mostly of the biggest hits of the late ’80s, including Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Madonna’s “Crazy for You.” The soundtrack did not earn the awards or prestige of Houston’s other credits, but the song’s re-release brought it to a younger generation and reaffirmed its rightful place alongside the decade’s most influential singles. “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” from “Waiting to Exhale” Houston’s second starring role resulted in another big soundtrack hit. The lead single from the album, “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” sold more than 1 million copies and went platinum. The song earned four nominations at the 1997 Grammy Awards , including Song of the Year, and walked away with Best R&B Song. Written by Babyface, “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” was just one of the many successful collaborations Houston would have with the famous producer. “The Preacher’s Wife” Soundtrack Houston’s last major film appearance before her death also brought about a record-breaking release for the artist. Houston performed all the songs on the soundtrack for “The Preacher’s Wife,” in which she starred opposite Academy Award winner Denzel Washington. The album itself went on to sell an estimated 6 million copies and became the best-selling gospel album of all time. “When You Believe” from “The Prince of Egypt” As one half of a duo that’s sure to go down in R&B history, Houston performed “When You Believe” off of the “Prince of Egypt” soundtrack with Mariah Carey. The song only found moderate success on the Billboard charts, but the biggest honor came Oscar night, when the writer of “When You Believe,” Stephen Schwartz, took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song in March 1999. Houston and Carey performed at the awards shortly before winning the honor. “The Bodyguard” Soundtrack Houston’s greatest musical contribution to film is also the album she’ll be most remembered for. The soundtrack for the 1992 film “The Bodyguard,” co-starring Kevin Costner, surpassed all expectations of motion-picture soundtracks up until that time and became one of the best-selling albums in history. Ranking fourth in sales, only behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and AC/DC’s Back in Black, the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” also took home the Grammy for Album of the Year. The most recognizable song of Houston’s career, a cover of Dolly Parton’s song “I Will Always Love You,” was the first of three singles from the album to break the Billboard top 20. Houston was the first female artist to have three songs on the list at the same time. Whitney Houston’s Death: Details Emerge

According to reports, Houston may have drowned in her Beverly Hills hotel bathtub. By Jocelyn Vena Whitney Houston Photo: FilmMagic The day after pop super diva Whitney Houston was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel room, details are beginning to emerge about what may have contributed to her sudden death. While the cause of death remains a mystery, police tell People that “at this time, there’s no obvious evidence of foul play.” Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen said Saturday “someone in her entourage found her unresponsive in her room. … Our detectives are still in the room, and her body is still here as well. I can confirm that Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We received a call at 3:43 p.m. from hotel security and Beverly Hills Fire, and police responded minutes later.” Police note that an investigation is ongoing. TMZ reports that while no illegal drugs were in her hotel room, prescription drugs were found. Sources add that she may have drowned in the bathtub, where her body was reportedly discovered. Houston’s body had been removed from the tub when authorities arrived, so an autopsy will have to be performed to determine the cause of her death. TMZ added that she had reportedly been taking Xanax at the time. Houston had been spotted drinking the night before at a pre-Grammy party, and in combination with the prescription drug, it could have led to her falling asleep in the tub and drowning. Bobbi Kristina, Houston’s daughter with ex-husband Bobby Brown, was reportedly on the hotel premises when Houston died. According to TMZ , Bobbi got into an argument with police when she was denied access to see her mother’s body. Houston’s cousin, Dionne Warwick, also showed up, according to reports, and was also not allowed to see the superstar’s body. Houston died at the age of 48 in Los Angeles. Her body was found at the Beverly Hilton, hours before her mentor Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy bash . She was expected to attend the annual fete. The party went on as planned Saturday night, where Davis, Diddy, Alicia Keys and Tony Bennett all paid tribute to the fallen star. On Sunday night (February 12), fellow Davis prot

Whitney Houston Death May Have Been Caused By Prescription Drug Overdose, Drowning

Prescription drugs were present at the scene of Whitney Houston’s tragic death, and it’s possible the star drowned in the bathtub, according to reports. No illegal drugs have been found in the hotel room where a member of the legendary singer’s entourage found Whitney Houston dead on Saturday. When EMTs arrived, Whitney’s body was already removed from the bathtub. It will take an autopsy to determine if she overdosed, drowned or died from some other cause. The medical examination is scheduled to take place imminently. Beverly Hills police officers found various pill bottles in Houston’s room at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel, where she died yesterday at the age of 48. There was no evidence that Whitney was drinking alcohol in the room. Houston’s body was removed from the room on a gurney and sent to the morgue for an autopsy to determine the official medical cause of death. Paramedics performed CPR on the singer when alerted to her unresponsiveness but it did not work. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Our sources say there were no obvious signs of foul play, but a full investigation is ongoing. Whitney’s body was ID’ed by family and friends. [Photo: WENN.com]

Whitney Houston Dead at 48

Whitney Houston, one of the most successful female artists of all-time, died at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel today. She was 48. The singer’s rep confirmed the news this evening to The Associate Press, with insiders saying a member of Houston’s entourage discovered her body late in the afternoon; a hotel employee called 911; and paramedics arrived to find Whitney unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 local time. Beverly Hill Police Lt. Mark Rosen said there was “no obvious signs of criminal intent,” though no cause of death has been determined and detectives have already started a full investigation. Houston leaves behind a daughter, Bobbi Kristina. The two-time Emmy and six-time Grammy Award winner sold over 200 million albums worldwide. She had battled alcohol and drug addiction – last seeking treatment in early 2011 – for many years prior to her death and was spotted out twice in Los Angeles over the last week, first with occasional boyfriend Ray J and then with a pal on Thursday night. Whitney was staying at the hotel in anticipation of Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party, which was scheduled to take place there last that night. It has since been canceled.
