By James Montgomery Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Peter Wafzig/ Getty Images Hours before Dave Grohl cemented his status as the secret MVP of the 54th Grammy Awards with a Jeremy Lin-like performance that included a Slayer T-shirt, a time-limit-be-damned acceptance speech and a three-minute guitar duel with Bruce Springsteen, the Foo Fighters frontman was in the mood to celebrate. After all, by the time the Foos chatted with MTV News on the Grammy red carpet, they had already won an armload of awards, including Best Rock Album , Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance (“I feel so bad for the Dream Theater guy,” Grohl joked). So when we asked him for details on his upcoming documentary — and rumors of an accompanying album — well, Grohl let the details spill forth like so much celebratory champagne. “We released a teaser trailer … there may be an album that accompanies [it],” Grohl said. “I recorded a lot of songs with a lot of people in the past couple months. There used to be a recording studio called Sound City that was in the San Fernando Valley. Nirvana recorded there in 1991. It was this really beautiful dump in the middle of a warehouse district. A lot of great records were made there. “Fleetwood Mac made records there; Neil Young made records there. Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Dio, Ratt, Pat Benatar, Rick Springfield, Rage Against the Machine did their first record there, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica … Evel Knievel, Charles Manson recorded there, Barry White, Johnny Cash,” he continued. “So I interview them to tell the history of the studio, but then I invite them back to record with me, and we make a record.” While there’s still no firm release date for either the “Sound City” film or soundtrack, it’s not the only project on Grohl’s plate at the moment: There’s also the matter of the Foos’ follow-up to the Grammy-winning Wasting Light album, which will once again re-team the band with producer Butch Vig and may very well re-up the “no computers” ethos employed during the making of that disc. Grohl will admit that there is an ambitious recording plan in place, though he wouldn’t reveal the details just yet. “We have an idea. ‘Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words’ airs tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. By John Mitchell Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in 1998 Photo: MTV News Back in the fall of 1998, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey set aside their long-rumored rivalry and came together to record a duet, “When You Believe,” for the animated film “The Prince of Egypt.” An interview with the two divas from that time is one of the many rare moments unearthed for MTV’s live 30-minute tribute to the late singer, entitled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words,” airing tonight (February 15) at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Asked about the song and whether they’d ever experienced a miracle in their own lives, Houston was the first to respond, telling MTV, “Yeah, I have. That baby sitting right up there. That’s my miracle.” She was referring, of course, to a then-5-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown, her only child with ex-husband Bobby Brown. Bobbi Kristina has had a particularly difficult time dealing with the passing of her mother, and was herself rushed from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where Houston died , to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center less than 24 hours after her death. Bobbi was said to be “hysterical, exhausted and inconsolable,” sources close to the situation told TMZ . After Carey responds, “I don’t have a child, so I can’t say the same thing, but maybe one day I will,” Houston turns to her peer for a candid moment that seems like more of an aside between two new friends than an interview sound bite. “When you do, you will realize that is the ultimate miracle. If you think you’ve got records and you’ve done all this stuff and all that stuff, [it’s] nothing like that,” Houston says. “That’s a true love that costs nothing. Unconditional love.” Though they always insisted they were always on friendly terms, rumors of a rivalry between Houston and Carey persisted throughout the ’90s. Indeed, they were often pitted against each other on the music charts and by critics who declared their respective talents to be comparable. Even after they chose to silence rumors by recording “When You Believe” and conducting interviews together, the buzz continued. Deadmau5 and Rihanna were among the featured acts last night at the House of Blues in L.A., where a major fundraiser was held for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. The Canadian electro star headlined the wee-hours gig with tickets ranging from $250-1,000. Rihanna took the stage for only seven minutes, but made them count. Rocking a mini-dress and blonde Farrah Fawcett ‘do , she jumped, fist-pumped and maybe even sang her way through “Where Have You Been” and “We Found Love.” Calvin Harris, who produced and co-wrote “We Found Love,” and two backup vocalists accompanied Rih. Harris later took the stage for nearly an our at the shindig. Confetti fell from the ceiling during the climax of the latter tune, and like that, Rihanna was gone, good deed done and no doubt some after-after-party to get to. The body of Whitney Houston is on its way to New Jersey. Insiders tell TMZ the singer is actually being transported east on Tyler Perry’s private jet, as that movie mogul offered up its services as soon as he arrived at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Saturday. According to NBC New York, meanwhile, a funeral will take place later this week in Newark, where mourners have already gathered, leaving flowers and signs outside the church Houston sang at as a child. No other details are available at this time, though The Newark Star-Ledger reports Whigham Funeral Home, which has organized services for several of Whitney’s family members, will handle the arrangements. Based on the latest leaks, Houston died inside her hotel room on Saturday as the result of mixing multiple prescription pills with alcohol . Her body, submerged in bathtub water, was discovered by the artist’s aunt.
Whitney Houston’s 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, TMZ reports. According to their sources Bobbi was taken on a stretcher out of the Beverly Hills Hilton, where her mother died yesterday. Clive Davis discovered Whitney Houston at a NYC nightclub when the singer was 20 years old. It was therefore eerie and appropriate that the artist passed away, possibly from an overdose on prescription drugs , just a few hours prior to the music producer’s annual pre-Grammy Awards party at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. The somber event did proceed as scheduled – with attendees including Britney Spears, Miranda Lambert, Brandy, Tom Hanks, P Diddy, Kim Kardashian and Mary J. Blige – and Davis opened the shindig with remarks abut Houston. “So, by now sadly, we have all learned of the unspeakably tragic news of our beloved Whitney’s passing. I don’t have to mask my emotions. Not in front of this room full of so many dear friends,” Davis said. “I do have a very heavy heart and I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me for so many years. Whitney was so full of life. “She was so looking forward to tonight… She loved music and she loved this night that celebrates music.” A moment of silence followed, with Diana Krall, Tony Bennett and Alicia Keys later performing. Houston had been spotted drinking the night before at a pre-Grammy party, and in combination with the prescription drug, it could have led to her falling asleep in the tub and drowning.
