Catholic League President Slams Dan Savage as the Ultimate Bully

Catholic League President Bill Donohue is not having any of Dan Savage’s apology . On Friday, the gay rights activist delivered the keynote addresses at the National High School Journalism Conference in Seattle, saying – while making a general point about how Christians look past plenty of passages in the Bible, most notably those promoting slavery – that folks should “learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people.” In response, a handful of students walked out on the speech and Savage has faced criticism from a number of organizations. Dan Savage on the Bible: Ignore Homosexual BS! Savage has since clarified certain remarks, specifically saying he regrets referring to the students who left his lecture as making a “pansy-ass move,” acknowledging this is a form of bullying. But is he sorry for the message he was trying to send? No. “If believers can ignore what the Bible says about slavery, they can ignore what the Bible says about homosexuality,” Savage has reiterated as the crux of his point. But none of that is enough for Donohue. He has released a statement that castigates Savage for a “history of making… vile, disgusting and bigoted remarks” and says: Ironically, Savage’s bullying of Christian students was done in the name of protesting the bullying of homosexuals. When it comes to bullying, Savage has no peer. We hope the Obama administration, which has welcomed him to the White House, takes note. What do YOU think, THGers? Does Savage owe Christians more of an apology?

‘Total Recall’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Len Wiseman remake, starring Colin Farrell, looks like a sleek, modern update of Arnold Schwarzenegger flick. By Kevin P. Sullivan Colin Farrell in “Total Recall” Photo: Sony If the trailer for Len Wiseman’s remake of “Total Recall” made one thing clear, it’s that this is not the “Total Recall” you know. Gone is the camp. Gone is the Martian setting. Gone is the Schwarzenegger. Instead, the new “Total Recall” is a sleek, visually impressive and modern sci-fi action thriller. Colin Farrell has stepped into the secret-secret-agent boots and the fit seems just right. Here are our five key scenes from the new “Total Recall” trailer. Total recall The trailer begins by giving a good sense of the setup of the story, and once Farrell’s character, Douglas Quaid, slips into the Rekal machine, that’s when all the trouble starts. Probably one of the strongest visual connections to the Paul Verhoeven-Arnold Schwarzenegger original, the Rekal machine should look vaguely familiar, albeit significantly updated. We do get the added benefit of a bleach-blond John Cho, but from the looks of the trailer, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be around for very long. “I know kung fu” After taking a seat in the Rekal machine, Quaid has his very own Jason Bourne moment. Once the police show up to arrest the very confused customer, his own secret-agent moves come back to him in a flash, and he’s able to dispatch all of the would-be arresting officers just as quickly. The camera jumps around with as much ferocity as Quaid, reminding us that Len “Underworld” Wiseman is definitely behind the lens. Kate Beckinsale: Villainess And if Len Wiseman is directing, his real-life wife, Kate Beckinsale , can’t be too far behind. After Quaid’s run-in with the police at the Rekal center, his loving wife, played by Beckinsale, turns out to be not so loving. In fact, she’s a deadly assassin set on killing Quaid once his past memories have been unlocked. She’s on the tail of Quaid and his new female companion, played by Jessica Biel . Frankly, it’s about time we got an evil turn out of Beckinsale. Anti-gravity gunfight Perhaps the horn blasts throughout the trailer aren’t the only nods to Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.” During the quick clips of scenes near the end of the trailer, we get a brief look at what appears to be a zero-g gunfight. Changing faces The final shot from the trailer is probably the most intriguing. The always fantastic Bryan Cranston , playing the president of Euroamerica, confronts Quaid, who seems more confused than ever. We then see Quaid’s face transform from Farrell’s to two other actors’ and back to Farrell’s. Schwarzenegger’s version of Quaid did some shape-shifting of his own, but never with this much style. ‘Game Of Thrones’ Sends A Message With Brutal Ending

Was the killing of Robert Baratheon’s bastards too much, even for ‘Game of Thrones’? Experts weight in. By Josh Wigler Peter Dinklage in “Game of Thrones” Photo: HBO Cripples, bastards and broken things don’t last long in Westeros — especially the bastards, as seen on Sunday night’s “Game of Thrones” season premiere . In what’s easily one of the more disturbing scenes in recent television history, the “Thrones” premiere closed with a montage of wicked boy king Joffrey ‘s armored dogs going around King’s Landing slaughtering all of late Robert Baratheon’s bastard children, a move presumably made to strengthen Joff’s claim to the Iron Throne. It was a powerful scene, one that sent a decisive message to the viewer: If Ned Stark’s beheading didn’t convince you that the Seven Kingdoms are a deadly, dangerous place to live in, then the merciless killing of illegitimate babies and toddlers should do the trick. Consider the message received, if not universally appreciated. “I had a bit of a problem with the killing of the bastards, particularly the baby in the whore house at the end of the episode,” RollingStone.com and BoiledLeather.com writer Sean T. Collins said of the bastard slaying during this week’s inaugural “Watching the Thrones,” MTV News’ new weekly “Game of Thrones” recap series. “That’s an event you learn about in passing conversation in the books; it happens offscreen. To see it onscreen … that’s the kind of thing that’s taboo almost for a reason.” Newsarama.com editor Lucas Siegel disagreed with Collins, asserting that such feelings of discomfort are the precise emotions you’re supposed to feel after watching the bastard slaying. “It’s such a brutal hit,” he said. “It knocked me down.” Most viewers were likely reeling along with Siegel and Collins upon seeing the horrific murders in action, but was the scene too horrific, even for a show like “Thrones”? Wired.com contributor and frequent “Thrones” devourer David Barr Kirtley doesn’t think so. “I didn’t think it was too far over the line,” he said. “The actual murder of the infant happens off-camera, and in any event, I just don’t think the idea of soldiers slaughtering children is all that shocking. That even happens in ‘Willow’ (a PG-rated movie), and most of us probably grow up hearing Bible stories about it. I think that any viewers who kept watching after learning about Craster’s incestuous relationship with his daughters and granddaughters probably aren’t going to be too scandalized by the slaying of a few bastard boys.” Whether or not viewers felt scandalized after the premiere, Elio Garc

Kush Chronic-les: Rev. Pat Robertson Thinks The Government Should Just Make The “Sticky-Icky” Legal, Says War On Drugs Is A Failure

When God said “Let there be light” we don’t think THIS is what he was talking about The Rev. Pat Robertson says America should legalize marijuana. Would Jesus agree? Msnbc.com put that question to a few theologians and religion experts, and the answer is … decidedly hazy. Robertson, the outspoken Christian evangelist and host of “The 700 Club,” made national headlines this week when he told The New York Times that pot should be decriminalized and treated like alcohol because the government’s war on drugs has failed miserably and is costing taxpayers billions of dollars. “I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded,” he told the newspaper. Scholars disagree on whether the Bible lays down the law on use of mind-altering drugs such as marijuana, also known as cannabis. “It’s not so simple that you can just go to the Scriptures and say, ‘Hey, that (passage) says marijuana should be illegal,’ or ‘that says marijuana should be legal.’ There is no such passage,” says Father Thomas Reese, S.J., senior fellow at Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. Some pro-pot Christians refer to Genesis 1:29 and interpret it to mean God does not frown on ingesting plants such as marijuana: And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, which has seed in its fruit; to you it shall be for food. Kirk Cameron Defends Anti-Gay Views, Touts "Life’s Mission to Love All People"

Under fire for his anti-gay comments on Piers Morgan Tonight, former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron defended himself in a Facebook post Tuesday. His tone was less combative and his comments much better-worded, but Kirk did not apologize for his beliefs, or the manner in which he voiced them. In fact, Cameron criticized the media and those contributing to the backlash, defending principles he stands for and the right to express them publicly. The actor defended his appearance on CNN (below) this way: Kirk Cameron on Gay Marriage “During the CNN interview, I was asked to express my views about homosexuality, gay marriage, and abortion. While that was not the agreed-upon purpose of the interview, I was pleased to answer Piers’ questions as honestly as I could. “To some, my responses were not sufficiently ‘loving’ toward the gay community. I can only say that it is my life’s mission to love all people, and I expressed the same views clearly and emphatically expressed throughout Judeo-Christian scriptures.” “As a Bible believing Christian, I could not have answered any other way.” “I’ve been encouraged by the support of many friends (including gay friends, incidentally) in the wake of condemnation by some political advocacy groups.” “In the case of one of my gay friends, we regularly talk and have healthy and respectful debate. We learn from each other, and serve others alongside one another.” “I thank God for all of my friends… even when they hold very different views on issues of faith and morality. I do not, however, believe that the right way to advance our views is to resort to name-calling and personal attacks, as some have done to me.” “I also believe that freedom of speech and freedom of religion go hand-in-hand in America. I should be able to express moral views on social issues – especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years – without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach ‘tolerance’ that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square.” “I hope more than a few people could see the large volume of secularist morality being imposed on me. In any society that is governed by the rule of law, some form of morality is always imposed. It’s inescapable.” “But it is also a complicated subject, and that is why I believe we need to learn how to debate these things with greater love and respect.” GLAAD was unsatisfied with the star’s explanation and offered its own response: “Saying that gay people are ‘detrimental to civilization’ might be ‘loving’ in Kirk Cameron’s mind, but it’s gay youth and victims of bullying who truly suffer from adults like Cameron who espouse these ideas,” said senior director Herndon Graddick. Cameron blasted gay marriage and homosexuality for being “destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization” and said if one if his sons told him he was gay, he would encourage him to “work through” those “issues.” What do you think? Is Kirk out of line? Or is he right on the money? Is there a double standard – at least in how certain views are treated by the media?

Elsewhere In The World: A Big Azz 13 Carat Pink Diamond Found In Australia!

It’s the ROCK!!! A 12.76-carat pink diamond has been unearthed in an Australian mine, the largest ever found in the country. Christened as the Argyle Pink Jubilee, the diamond was found in mining giant Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia’s East Kimberly region. The Argyle mine is the world’s largest producer of pink diamonds, with Rio Tinto reporting that the mine generates more than 90% of the global market supply. “A diamond of this caliber is unprecedented—it has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone, and we may never see one like this again,” said Argyle Pink Diamonds Manager Josephine Johnson in a statement. Rio Tinto expects that after two months of assessment and planning, it will take ten days to cut and polish the diamond into a single stone. The finished stone will be offered for sale during the company’s annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender later this year. According to Australia’s Herald Sun, the diamond will be worth at least US$1.07 million. However, it is premature to judge the stone’s significance at this point, according to Sotheby’s Asia department head of jewelry, Chin Yeow Quek. “It is hard to judge a stone in the rough. It really depends on how large the rock will be polished downed to,” said Quek, explaining that diamonds tend to lose at least 50 perecent of their weight during the polishing process. “It also depends on the [intensity of] color and clarity,” he added. Rev. Franklin Graham: Muslims See Barack Obama As A “Son Of Islam”

Who asked this guy for his shady opinion?? Rev. Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham and a prominent evangelical leader in his own right, waded into contentious waters Tuesday when asked for his views on the religious beliefs of President Obama and the GOP hopefuls. Graham, the CEO and president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, told a Morning Joe panel he couldn’t say for certain that Obama is a Christian. “You have to ask him. I cannot answer that question for anybody. All I know is I’m a sinner, and that God has forgiven me of my sins,” Graham said. “You have to ask every person. He has said he’s a Christian, so I just have to assume that he is.” But Graham also said he couldn’t “categorically” say Obama wasn’t a Muslim, in part, because Islam has gotten a “free pass” under Obama. Graham also said the Muslim world sees Obama as a “son of Islam,” because the president’s father and grandfather were Muslim. According to Edina Lekovic, director of policy at the Muslim Public Affairs Council, being born in a Muslim family doesn’t make one a Muslim. A person has to make an active choice to become a Muslim, Lekovic said. Obama has said again and again that he is a Christian, both as a presidential candidate and as president. “I’m a Christian by choice,” Obama told a group of New Mexico voters last September, answering a question from a member of the audience. He said he has embraced his faith even though growing up, “my family didn’t, frankly. They weren’t folks who went to church every week.” In Chicago, Obama was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ for years, but he quit in May 2008 after videos of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s racially-divisive sermons surfaced on the Web. “Our relations with Trinity have been strained by the divisive statements of Reverend Wright, which sharply conflict with our own views,” Obama and his wife Michelle wrote at the time. The debate over the president’s faith was brought up again on the campaign trail this Saturday, when Rick Santorum told a Tea Party crowd in Columbus, Ohio, that Obama’s agenda is “not about you. It’s not about you. It’s not about your quality of life. It’s not about your job. It’s about some phony ideal, some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology, but no less a theology.” Thoughts?? Source More On Bossip! R.I.P. Herman ‘Touch Caucasian Cakes’ Cain: “I Dropped Out Of The Presidential Race Because Of Gutter Politics, Stupid People, & Keeping Family First”

Your boy Herman Cain is bizzzack and he and his 9-9-9-isms hit the stage at the CPAC conference where he discussed a plethora of things such as teleprompters, gutter politics, and the Bible: In the most anticipated address of the day on Thursday, Herman Cain compared himself to the biblical David, who slew Goliath. Cain said he dropped out of the presidential race because he values his family, and then offered the strong analogy. “There were two reasons I dropped out of the race – gutter politics and, No. 2, I chose to put family first,” he said. “And in making that decision, I knew that we together could change Washington, D.C., from the outside and from the bottom up even if your David didn’t make it to the White House.” The crowd didn’t immediately seem to know which David that Cain was referring to, but later in his comments, it became clearer that his reference was to the Bible. Cain also took time out of his speech to recognize Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, a.k.a. “Joe the Plumber,” who is waging a quixotic campaign for Congress in a very tough Ohio district. “Some of us choose to get off the sidelines, and I admire that,” Cain said. “I don’t regret the move that I made, but there’s more than one way to skin a cat.” Check out the video of his speech below… Even more folks at this CPAC 2012 were going in on Barack Obama: In his speech opening the CPAC conference, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) touched on every leg of the so-called three-legged stool: national security, the economy and social conservatism. It was a jokey speech filled with barbs at Democrats — liberals now call themselves “progressive, which I thought was an insurance company” and “It’s hard to get a teleprompter in this town, there’s a guy who uses a lot of them.” He took multiple shots at Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and former president Jimmy Carter. Obama, he said, “looks like he’s a really good father, he’s a really good husband, but he is a terrible president.” SMH. Source

‘Hunger Games’ Soundtrack: Pre-Game With An Expert Playlist

Hobnobbing helps you get to know the album’s featured artists through their best works. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate On Monday, Taylor Swift will enter the MTV arena to debut the music video for her Civil Wars collaboration, “Safe and Sound,” which appears on the “Hunger Games” soundtrack. And following the premiere, the country cutie will stick around MTV.com for an exclusive 30-minute interview about the lead single, her upcoming projects and more. So for Peeta’s sake, tune in, OK? But as any “Hunger Games” fan can attest, Swift isn’t the only artist to be reaped for the T-Bone Burnett-produced companion album (out March 20). Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, Neko Case and Miranda Lambert are all reportedly contributing to the effort. So to prepare for what’s sure to be an epic soundtrack, we’ve asked several music experts to recommend top tunes from each performer—a pre-Games playlist, if you will. So put down your bow and arrow, grab your earbuds and settle in with these hand-picked selections: The Decemberists “No shortage of truly great tunes (with truly epic titles) from the Pacific Northwest’s leading purveyors of erudite indie. From the hard-charging horns of ‘Sixteen Military Wives’ (off 2005’s Picaresque ) to the 12-string shimmy of ‘Down by the Water’ (from last year’s The King Is Dead ) — with proggy dalliances like ‘You’ll Not Feel the Drowning’ and ‘The Prettiest Whistles Won’t Wrestle the Thistles Undone’ in between — the ‘rists have never met a genre they wouldn’t tackle … or a song title they couldn’t stretch to infinity. — James Montgomery, Rock Writer, MTV News “The Decemberists are often described as ‘indie-folk’ or ‘chamber pop,’ but they are constantly shifting into new genres and playing with foreign sounds. ‘Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect’ is from their first album and doesn’t have the same epic quality that their later albums (most of which are sprawling mini-operas), but it does capture frontman Colin Meloy’s unending melancholy and slightly fanciful worldview. It’s catchy as hell too.” — Kyle Anderson, Staff Writer, Entertainment Weekly “Asking me to choose a favorite Decemberists song is like asking me to choose a favorite pair of shoes — I have so many! It’s almost impossible! But I’ll do it. The apotheosis of the entire Decemberists catalogue, for me, is ‘Shanty for the Arethusa’ off of their 2003 album Her Majesty the Decemberists . This isn’t a song. It’s a sensory odyssey. Dude, the way they bring to life the creaking of the rotten hull of an olde-timey ship feels so real that I can almost feel myself getting scurvy.” — Tamar Anitai, Managing Editor, MTV Buzzworthy Arcade Fire “They broke through with Funeral, thanks in no small part to anthemic, wide-screen melodramas like ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Rebellion (Lies)’ — songs seemingly created for stadium-uniting sing-alongs — backtracked on that all-encompassing stance with insular, world-weary Neon Bible tracks like ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘My Body is a Cage,’ and, finally, with The Suburbs, ‘Month of May’ and ‘We Used to Wait,’ just decided to ditch all the subtlety and subterfuge and just become Springsteen disciples. Hey, whatever works.” — Montgomery “Canada’s finest indie exports move at only two speeds: Epic and super-epic. ‘No Cars Go’ falls in the latter category, beginning with a simple hum-and-strum, then building into great swirls of chaotic orchestral noise, with the damaged, desperate voices of frontpeople/couple Win Butler and R
