Miley Cyrus Defends Gay Rights Tattoo

Cyrus tweeted a photo of her equal-sign tattoo over the weekend, prompting debate among fans regarding gay rights. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus’ new equal rights tattoo Photo: Miley Cyrus’ Twitter Miley Cyrus has never shied away from speaking her mind, and over the weekend she posted a photo of her latest body ink on Twitter : an equal-sign tattoo on her middle finger. In addition to sharing with the world her pro-gay rights stance via tat, she tweeted the message, “All LOVE is equal.” However, the photo quickly prompted a debate on her Twitter account when fans began to respond to Miley’s tattoo with mixed feelings. “Where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn’t,” Miley tweeted to one fan who questioned her belief in God after displaying her support of the gay community. “GOD is the only judge honey. GOD is love.” But when her fans began attacking the fan who questioned her, Miley defended her for sharing her opinion with the world. “Dude everyone lay off … Love u! Everyone is entitled 2 opinions! If u don’t stand 4 something you’ll fall for anything.” Her Twitter profile shares a similar message: “Let your light shine. Be a source of strength & courage. Share your wisdom. RADIATE LOVE.” This isn’t the first time that Miley’s sharing her beliefs on Twitter has sparked debate. In a Parade magazine interview in March 2010, Cyrus said that one of the reasons she had quit Twitter for a time was that she was getting angry tweets from fans who didn’t agree with her support of gay marriage. She returned to Twitter earlier this year. “There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I’ve said or done because I believe there are no mistakes, because God is the only one who can judge us,” Cyrus explained. “That’s the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person.” What do you think of Miley’s outspoken support of marriage equality and gay rights? During by far the most dramatic 24 hours of debt limit negotiations that have had a chokehold on American politics and government since January, Sen.Marco Rubio’s remarks followed by debate with Sen. John Kerry on the Senate floor this afternoon perhaps no better captures the frustration of freshman Republicans, hypocrisy of current political rhetoric, and inability of opposing sides to form real solutions…. Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Hits The Net

The clip, set to premiere tonight on E!, leaked early … and, as Gaga put it, it’s ‘a celebration of faith.’ By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Well, it’s here … eight hours ahead of schedule. On Thursday morning (May 5), Lady Gaga’s hotly anticipated “Judas” video premiered, though probably not in the way that Mother Monster (and the folks at E!) had hoped it would: It leaked. Originally set to be unveiled on the network during prime time on Thursday (and then again at 11:30 p.m.), “Judas” got a bit of an advance screening, quickly making the rounds on the Internet while the Little Monsters squealed with delight (or, alternately, expressed their outrage at its leaking). And despite pretty much everything Gaga had said about the video — that it was “a motorcycle Fellini film,” that it portrayed “a betrayal of a prophecy fulfilled” — it is very much a pure pop clip, albeit one that looks great and is sure to earn the ire of a few folks on the religious right. An arty reimagining of the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot, the video sees Gaga as Mary Magdalene, riding along with Christ and his apostles, who are decked out in studded leathers and set atop roaring motorcycles. They cruise through — as Gaga put it — “a modern-day Jerusalem,” with Judas tellingly racing ahead of the pack. At one point, they stop at an “Electric Chapel,” where Gaga attempts to warn Christ — who, with his cornrows and golden crown of thorns, is far from traditional — of his apostle’s impending betrayal. Whether or not he chooses to listen is largely up to the viewer, as the clip then segues into an extended sequence rife with religious iconography … and, of course, dance. And though it remains to be seen if the highly touted “uncut” version of “Judas” — which will still premiere tonight on E! at 7 p.m. ET — contains more controversial material, it’s difficult to see why some people would have a problem with the video: Sure, Jesus looks different, and Gaga is playing Magdalene (certainly one of the most controversial figures in the Bible), but its imagery isn’t nearly as sacred/profane as that of the “Alejandro” clip (Gaga does not, to the best of our knowledge, ingest rosary beads here), and in fact, with its artistic interpretations of foot washing and Boticelli’s “The Birth of Venus,” it’s almost more of a tribute to the pop sensation’s Catholic upbringing … a fact she hit on when she said the video “[is] meant more to celebrate faith than it is to challenge it.” Leave it to Gaga to push the boundaries while remaining faithful to the source material. “Judas” is, at its sacred heart, an artistic explosion contained within the confines of a traditional pop clip. And if it’s meant to be a celebration, well, you should probably start celebrating … before the clip gets pulled, of course. Have you seen Gaga’s leaked “Judas” video and, if so, what do you think? Share your opinions in the comments. Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Is ‘Groundbreaking,’ Laurieann Gibson Says

‘It’s a phenomenal video: really powerful, really impactful,’ creative director tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Lady Gaga Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage Lady Gaga is ready to tell her version of the Bible in her “Judas” video , which recently wrapped production in L.A. MTV News caught up with the video’s co-director and Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, to talk about the clip as well as her new E! show “The Dance Scene,” debuting Sunday. “I will tell you now, first off, I’m Christian, and my career is evidence of God in my life, and I think that most people are already thinking that Gaga and the blasphemy and they’re premeditating the approach and I think they’ll be very shocked to find out how huge and really groundbreaking the message is and how freeing the message is for all the right reasons,” she said. “And it’s really going to shock the world.” The cast includes some big-name cameos as well, including Norman Reedus as Judas. “He was so prolific,” she declared of his performance, adding that the video is “badass” and that Gaga will play Mary Magdalene. The two ladies took it upon themselves to make sure the video’s direction was perfect — so they just decided to direct it themselves. “There was elements of ‘Born This Way’ during our collaboration [with director Nick Knight] and, as much as I loved it, there were moments where, for me, it didn’t really evolve as I had inspired of the actual creative, which was defined. “But when we got to ‘Judas,’ it was very clear to me and the inspiration was very clear to her. We approached a director, but then the dates actually got messed up and it was conflicted and her manager and her looked at me [and asked me to direct it with her].” Gibson said she took a moment before agreeing, as she had just wrapped up work on Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball HBO special , premiering in May, but she “couldn’t resist. It’s a phenomenal video: really powerful, really impactful. She’s such a strong, committed artist. Her loyalty to me is something I will be forever grateful for. We’re spiritually connected. We need each other, and ‘Judas’ is ultimately a representation of our true bond.” What are you expecting from the “Judas” video? Let us know in the comments! Jazzy Jeff, James Poyser & More On “Jill Scott FROM THE VAULT”

More here:

When fans hear the words “from the vault” in relation to one of their favorite artists the impulse is to turn up their noses, and with good reason. Historically, projects of unreleased material are usually filled with unfinished or unmixed outtakes that the artist didn’t want to use or were not up to the standard their fans were accustomed to. However, Hidden Beach CEO Steve McKeever insists this is not the case with an up-coming collection from Jill Scott, Just Before Dawn: Jill Scott From the Vault, Vol. 1. Despite reports of a lawsuit between his label and Scott he says the two sides came to a mutual and amicable agreement for her departure. RELATED: Jill Scott’s Sexiest Lyrics “Every family has fights from time to time and the Hidden Beach family is no different. But if you’re family, you come back and figure something out. That’s what we did,” McKeever told Billboard . The R&B star is now signed to Warner Bros records and will be releasing her first album for them The Light Of The Sun this summer. “We are cheering the Warner Bros. record on, but also pleased to have worked jointly with Jill in selecting and compiling music from previous recording sessions that celebrate the greatness of her artistry.” Just Before Dawn includes music from a stream of recording sessions that were intentionally held for future releases. The collection features production from Jazzy Jeff, James Poyser, Dre & Vidal and Scott. The deluxe version of Just Before Dawn will feature a DVD complete with nine music videos and three live performances, including her famed “And I Heard” performance at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles. “Our agreement with Jill to open up the vault and share the treasures inside with her fans is a huge win for music lovers everywhere,” says McKeever. Fans who purchase the first single “Lovely Day” are treated to a mixtape of even more unreleased music. The album can be pre-ordered at Jillscott.com. Is Hip Hop Homophobic?

Original post:

The internet and blogs have been abuzz with the recent allegations of legendary Hip Hop producer and popular radio DJ, Mister Cee, 44-years old, who was arrested for lewd acts with a 20-year old young man. It sent a shock wave throughout the Hip Hop community. A blow that knocked everyone off their feet. So much so, that radio personalities Funkmaster Flex and Ed Lover came to the defense of Mister Cee discounting the story as bogus and a hoax. I watched and read the blogs and reader’s comments. Some were understanding and wanted to talk about Hip Hop’s dirty little secret of down low and gay men in Hip Hop. Others were not so kind. They ranted and raved about gays and their deviant behavior. I also listened as fans called into one particular radio station with their views on Mister Cee and answered the day’s topic, “Is Hip Hop homophobic? And, can a Hip Hop artist come out in society today?” I thought to myself, “Yes, Hip Hop is homophobic. And, of course not. An artist cannot come out today and have a successful career in Hip Hop.” And, here’s why: Hip Hop is a culture and environment which does not provide a safe place for an artist to come forward or to come out. If you listen to many rap lyrics they promote hate and gay-bashing. It is an environment where the thug and gangster mentality is prevalent. Artists boast of a hyper-masculine bravado, with their crotch-grabbing, degradation of women, and their braggadocios lyrical slaying about the number of women they’ve slept with and children they’ve produced. And, let’s not forget the popular sayings, “No Homo,” or “Pause,” which many in the Hip Hop community preface their statements with when someone makes a comment (“I like the way dude dress,” Or, “His body is crazy,” And, “Dude is a pretty boy”) about another person of the same sex. Here’s another reason why: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was the motto for the military for many years. If you were someone who was gay, the military didn’t want to know. They didn’t want your kind in its services. Basically, they wanted you to keep it to yourself. In other words, HIDE! The same goes for Hip Hop. There is a Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, where the artists, executives, and fans do not want to know, or should I dare say, refuse to believe that a Hip Hop artist could be gay. Yes, I know. It’s time to repeal this policy in Hip Hop, too. Well, some three years ago, I penned my memoir and it, too, sent shockwaves throughout the Hip Hop world. My book, Hiding In Hip Hop: On The Down Low in the Entertainment Industry From Music to Hollywood , detailed my life as a down low man who was part of a gay subculture within the entertainment industry, particularly Hip Hop, who hid our sexuality from the outside world. I provided detailed accounts of my relationships, both intimate and personal, with some of Hip Hop’s royalty, and our bedside secrets. Moreover, the book was about my journey and struggle to come to terms with who I am as a gay man hiding in a very homophobic and highly misogynistic and testosterone driven culture which thrives on glorifying the gangster thug mentality. So, I knew the dangers and threat I faced every day, for fifteen years, if I chose to disclose my sexuality. The derogatory comments that were made in my presence by my colleagues were heart-wrenching and cruel. It pained me to hear their thoughts expressed openly and honestly. These same persons who worked in Hip Hop, a culture they preached that was about unity and breaking down the cultural divide. Really? It’s obvious to me that Hip Hop isn’t so much about understanding and unity because if it was then we wouldn’t be here today discussing the shocking allegations of Mister Cee and his lewd acts, would we? I personally feel many men and women would openly live their lives without shame and judgment if Hip Hop was more understanding and more accepting. But, let’s take a look at the intellectual level of Hip Hop, which is over two decades old and is considered a mature age, yet, it has the intellectual level of an immature reckless child. Don’t believe me, turn on any urban radio station and listen to the lyrics pouring over the airwaves, and then look at the state of the Black community, and its children who follow Hip Hop and are die-hard fans. I also find it particularly disturbing that the many people who have helped to shape, create, and build Hip Hop are the same persons who are now in their late thirties, forties, and fifties, and still are unable to have an intelligent discourse on sex, sexuality, and homophobia in Hip Hop. Yes, they are older and wealthier, but only by monetary means, not in intelligence. So, when will Hip Hop grow up? I challenge Hip Hop today. I challenge the community to stop burying their heads in the sand when it comes to gay men and women who are in Hip Hop. I challenge Funkmaster Flex and Ed Lover, who are legends in Hip Hop, and who have loyal followers, to stop discrediting and discounting that gay men and women are a part of Hip Hop. I am sure they, and many others, are not that naïve to believe their fellow comrades, colleagues, and friends can’t possibly be gay and be a part of Hip Hop. Stop being afraid to have the dialogue about your fellow colleagues who have helped shape and build Hip Hop into the global phenomenon it is. We are in all aspects of it as artists, executives, producers, songwriters, directors, publicists, and managers. But, moreover, it is time for all of us to stop hiding. If we cannot be who we are without fear of the backlash, judgment, and criticism, then we will continue to have people hiding in Hip Hop. This allegation against Mister Cee is not the first, and nor will it be the last that we will hear of a man being caught with his pants down. But, if Hip Hop is to eventually grow up, and stop being afraid to discuss the underlying problem that plague our community – sex, sexuality, and homophobia, then Hip Hop will continue to not serve its purpose, people, and vision. As the bible states, when there is no vision the people will perish. Let’s save ourselves, our community, our people, and our culture. Stop dumbing down, discrediting and insulting the intelligence of the people. Yes, Hip Hop, there are gay men and women who make up the culture and have been a part of it since its inception.
