TreeHugger Bikes Climate Ride: My Bamboo Bike From Organic Bikes

Photo copyright Mairi Beautyman So let the games begin. In about 15 minutes, I’ll be taking off for the first day of Brita Climate Ride — the climate awareness bike trip that has arranged to have me pedaling 320 miles in 5-days (on a bamboo bike, no less!) from Eureka, California to San Francisco. Or I think I will — the last I heard from our volunteer bike repairman was something about a hacksaw…… Read the full story on TreeHugger

They Make No Small Plans In Jönköping, Sweden: A City Designed For Bikes

A lot of Torontonians are wondering where they will move after the election in October, as the candidates race to the bottom to outdo each other in slashing services, getting rid of bike lanes, building underground highways that make Boston’s Big Dig look small and cheap, and where the formerly leading candidate lost my vote with his rallying cry “Scarborough, not Copenhagen”! (Scarborough is a troubled, car-dominated suburb) That rallying cry was particularly troubling because Toronto could use a little Copenhagen, and even more Jönköping

Conversations with Women Cyclists (Video)

Bikes are for Everyone While in some parts of the world (Copenhagen, Amsterdam), cycling is the most normal thing in the world for both sexes, other places have had more problems making women feel like cycling might be for them. Thankfully, this is gradually starting to change in many places, and I’m hoping that a virtuous cycle will take place; if women start seeing lots of women on bikes instead of just a bunch of guys, it’ll increase the chances that they’ll think “hey, maybe I should try it”. Our friends at StreetFilms went out in NYC and talked to many wom… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Why Nearly Every GOP Senate Candidate is a Climate Skeptic

Photo via RRStar All But One There’s a reason that it was so devastating when the Senate climate bill staggered to an untimely death a couple months ago — beyond that singular failure to enact emissions-reducing legislation, there was the sense that it was the last chance we’d have for action in a long while. Due to the conventional wisdom that the GOP will sweep into power, there would hypothetically be a whole lot of opponents to climate… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Tom Wilson’s Awesome DIY Monster Quad Bikes! (Photos)

Photo: Tom Wilson Kind of Like a Bike SUV Tom Wilson sure likes to ride around the Burning Man festival in style! He designs and builds giant quad bikes that are, in my opinion, amazingly cool and beautiful. So far he has completed three projects: The DogSled, The Pup, and the BigDog. The photo above is of the DogSled, and I’ve included photos of the other two below. Really worth checking out, in my opinion…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

2010 VMAs: Lady Gaga Scores, Taylor Swift And Kanye West Vent

Performances from Justin Bieber, Eminem/Rihanna and others also steal the show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage With 13 nominations, there was no way Lady Gaga was going home empty-handed at Sunday night’s (September 12) MTV Video Music Awards . And when the international pop/fashion icon stepped up to accept her sixth award of the night, for Video of the Year, she did what she always does: broke off a piece for her legion of fans by teasing the name of her upcoming album. On a night when Kanye West seemingly came all the way back from music jail with yet another eye-popping performance that put most (or at least some) of last year’s stage-crashing antics to rest, Taylor Swift appeared to answer Kanye’s bum-rush with some lyrical barbs of her own, and everyone from Justin Bieber and B.o.B to Drake and Nicki Minaj made their VMA debuts. In the end, though, the night belonged to Mother Monster. Gaga got the night started early with a pre-show win for Best Dance Video for “Bad Romance” and Best Collaboration for “Telephone” with Beyonc

Report Claims Bicyclists Responsible for Most Biking Fatalities in Berlin

Images: Abragad, via Flickr When the New York Police blamed cyclists for causing 75% of accidents — without offering supporting data, the organization Right of Way struck back with a report showing only 25% of bikers at fault , and that only on the assumption that the drivers responsible for bicycle fatalities testified fairly, in the absence of the victim’s point of view. In a Toronto study, a convalescing bicyclist demonstrated that

24-Carat Gold-Plated Folding Bike. Any Takers?

Image credit: Sean O’Dell From bike races in business attire at the Brompton World Championships to a DIY electric assist kit for the classic folding bike , the Brompton seems to be a magnet for the unusual. But I’m really not sure what to make of this pimped-out 24-carat-gold-plated Brompton that’s just gone on sale on eBay. I do know it will take a brave soul to ride that thing in public….
