A lot of Torontonians are wondering where they will move after the election in October, as the candidates race to the bottom to outdo each other in slashing services, getting rid of bike lanes, building underground highways that make Boston’s Big Dig look small and cheap, and where the formerly leading candidate lost my vote with his rallying cry “Scarborough, not Copenhagen”! (Scarborough is a troubled, car-dominated suburb) That rallying cry was particularly troubling because Toronto could use a little Copenhagen, and even more Jönköping

Bikes are for Everyone While in some parts of the world (Copenhagen, Amsterdam), cycling is the most normal thing in the world for both sexes, other places have had more problems making women feel like cycling might be for them. Thankfully, this is gradually starting to change in many places, and I’m hoping that a virtuous cycle will take place; if women start seeing lots of women on bikes instead of just a bunch of guys, it’ll increase the chances that they’ll think “hey, maybe I should try it”. And when the international pop/fashion icon stepped up to accept her sixth award of the night, for Video of the Year, she did what she always does: broke off a piece for her legion of fans by teasing the name of her upcoming album. On a night when Kanye West seemingly came all the way back from music jail with yet another eye-popping performance that put most (or at least some) of last year’s stage-crashing antics to rest, Taylor Swift appeared to answer Kanye’s bum-rush with some lyrical barbs of her own, and everyone from Justin Bieber and B.o.B to Drake and Nicki Minaj made their VMA debuts.
