CNN’s Ed Henry Touts Bill Clinton as ‘Best Democratic Politician’

On Wednesday’s American Morning, CNN’s Ed Henry lauded former President Clinton as ” one of the best politicians the Democrats have ever had …in the last quarter century” and touted his apparent credibility over current President Barack Obama. Henry also speculated that if “Al Gore… had used President Clinton more in 2000, he may have been president .” Substitute anchor Drew Griffin brought on the White House correspondent 26 minutes into the 7 am Eastern hour to discuss the Obama White House’s intention to “aggressively use the former president on the campaign trail over the next few months. One party official familiar with the plan calls it a- quote, ‘no-brainer.'” During the second half of the segment, Griffin asked, “How can Bill Clinton do it all? I mean, he was picked by President Obama, basically, to rebuild Haiti. Now, they seem to be yanking him off of that and heading him out to the campaign trail, just to save the Democrats in the House in November.” Henry used the “no-brainer” quote from the unnamed Democratic Party official in his answer and immediately proceeded to use his superlatives about Clinton: HENRY: Well, they’re careful here inside the White House to say that they don’t want to yank him off the Haiti job or any of his other important Clinton Foundation work, for example, altogether. They just want him to fit it in, because they say- look, as you noted, it’s a no-brainer . This is one of the best politicians the Democrats have ever had- you know, in the last quarter century . And, as President Obama faces these credibility questions and all these various national polls right now, and as he tries to make this case that there is a real choice between the Democratic message and the Republican message, people inside the White House say there’s no one better at making that case, that contrast between the Democrats and the Republicans, than Bill Clinton . So they want to use him early and often, and they point to what happened in 2000 when Al Gore had trepidation about using Bill Clinton- sort of backfired on him, blew up in his face. If they had used President Clinton more in 2000, he may have been president, Drew . Is Henry forgetting and/or brushing aside Clinton’s own credibility issues, such as his law license in Arkansas being suspended for five years after he lied under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky? Griffin followed through by asking about the current Democratic occupant of the White House: “You know, I can’t resist, Ed, but what about using President Obama, the current president? He just doesn’t have the clout?” The CNN correspondent acknowledged Obama’s failing poll numbers, but then touted him as still being more or less equal to former President Clinton: HENRY: … Clearly, he’s facing these credibility questions because of all these national polls you’ve been talking about . The ABC one yesterday saying 6 in 10 Americans basically don’t have faith in this president right now to make the right decisions. They’re pushing back on that, obviously, inside the White House , and saying- look, they’re going to send him out on the campaign trail. But there’s certain states like Arkansas where President Obama is just deeply unpopular- lost to John McCain there by double digits. And so, they see it as a one-two punch . President Obama will be out there in some states, Bill Clinton will go to other ones, Drew.

AP Quietly Lowers the ‘Normal’ Unemployment Bar to 6%

Those looking for evidence that there a move afoot in the establishment press to lower the bar for whatever economic accomplishments might be accomplished during the Obama administration will be interested in how the Associated Press’s report on the government’s June jobs report defined “normal” unemployment. Perhaps it’s valid for reporters Jeannine Aversa and Christopher Rugaber to refer to 6% unemployment as “normal,” if by that they mean “typical non-recessionary” or “long-term average” unemployment. But I couldn’t help but remember that during the Bush 43 and Reagan years, unemployment rates just above and occasionally even below that level were described by wire service reporters and other journalists as “persistent unemployment” — i.e., decidedly not “normal.” I quickly found several AP and other reports from those eras that confirmed my recall of what is now a demonstrated double standard. Here is the opening sentence from the AP report , followed by the term-redefining paragraph: A second straight month of lackluster hiring by American businesses is sapping strength from the economic rebound. … Unemployment is expected to stay above 9 percent through the midterm elections in November. And the Fed predicts joblessness could still be as high as 7.5 percent two years from now. Normal is considered closer to 6 percent , and economists say it will probably take until the middle of this decade to achieve that. “Closer to 6%” seems to imply that “normal” is really “slightly above” that level.  It’s legitimate to question whether there has really been an economic rebound when people who are looking for work aren’t finding it and so many others have abandoned their quest. The truth is that the number of people reported as working according to the Establishment Survey in yesterday’s Employment Situation Report is lower than it was a year ago , when the recession as normal people define it ended. It’s also worth remembering, assisted by an updated version of the indispensable chart from Innocents Bystanders , that the administration predicted that its stimulus plan would return the economy to the AP’s new “normal” by the first quarter of 2012, three years earlier than “the middle of this decade”: Oops. Here are some previous examples of situations described by the establishment press as “persistent unemployment”: October 7, 2003 — Both an AP story and an item at USA Today on California’s recall election told readers that “Californians face an $8 billion state budget deficit, persistent unemployment and struggling schools.” The Golden State’s unemployment rate in September 2003 was 6.4% . June 13, 2003 — A Reuters report on consumer sentiment relayed that “Consumer sentiment deteriorated sharply in early June, suggesting persistent unemployment is taking its toll on Americans’ expectations for the economy’s future.” The national unemployment rate in May 2003 was 6.1% . April 4, 2004 — A Fox News item to which AP contributed claimed that “there is evidence that persistent unemployment, despite other signs of a recovering economy, is taking its toll on the president’s popularity.” On April 2, the government reported a national unemployment rate of 5.7% . Going back further, in a March 29, 1987 book review at the New York Times (“No Time for Radicals”), Michael Janeway wrote this of author Robert Lekachman: “Under Ronald Reagan, the author writes, no god but that of the marketplace is worshiped, yielding ‘privatization, militarization, persistent unemployment, de-unionization, middle-class shrinkage, and the triumph of plutocracy.’ Mr. Lekachman’s cases in point, when backed by fact and figure, make for an intelligently passionate brief against the Reagan Administration.” Janeway didn’t dispute the factual accuracy of Lekachman’s claim about “persistent unemployment, which at the time was 6.5% . Gosh, who knew that “normal” was only a half-point or less below that of “a mean society”? But what was once “persistent unemployment” is now “normal.” No double standard there (/sarcasm). Oh, wait a minute. Maybe the AP pair is subtly informing us that as long as the Obama administration is in power and Democrats control Congress, “persistent unemployment” will be “normal.” If so, guys, thanks for letting us know. Obama Rated One of Best Presidents Ever – Better Than Reagan

A survey of 238 “presidential scholars” released Thursday ranked Barack Obama as one of the nations’s best presidents ever. According to the Siena College Research Institute, Obama ranks 15th three spots AHEAD of Ronald Reagan.  Imagine that: a man that has been in the White House for less than eighteen months and hasn’t accomplished anything is considered better than the president that reinvigorated America after the dreadful Jimmy Carter years while also ending the Cold War. Speaking of Carter, these geniuses actually ranked him higher than George W. Bush. The New York Daily News reported Thursday: George W. Bush was no FDR, but Barack Obama could be. That’s the verdict of 238 of the nation’s leading presidential scholars, who – for a fifth time – rated Franklin Delano Roosevelt the best president ever in the latest Siena College Research Institute poll. In office for barely two years, Obama entered the survey in the 15th position – two spots behind Bill Clinton and three spots ahead of Ronald Reagan. Yep. Clinton ranked higher than Reagan as well. Actually, the details of the full rankings are even funnier. For instance, although presiding over arguably the worst economic period in American history, FDR is ranked first in handling of the economy. First! But to REALLY give you an idea of how biased and absurd these so-called presidential scholars are, they rated Obama ahead of Reagan in handling of the economy. I kid you not. Obama was ranked 17th in this category, while Reagan, who started the nation’s longest peacetime expansion in history, was ranked 21st. Maybe even better, Obama was ranked 10th in ability to compromise. Wouldn’t you love to ask this geniuses to name some things Obama has compromised on since Inauguration Day?  For the record, Carter was ranked 32nd while George W. Bush came in close to the bottom at 39. It really makes you wonder what color the sky is in the world these folks live.

Chris Matthews Tells Charlie Rose That Bill Clinton Is a Hit In ‘Culturally Conservative’ Areas

Have liberals blacked out the sex-and-perjury impeachment of Bill Clinton? MSNBC’s Chris Matthews appeared on the Charlie Rose show on PBS Thursday, and Rose asked him about how Sen. Blanche Lincoln had a “secret weapon” in her primary race in Arkansas. Matthews responded by laying it on thick about how great Bill Clinton is. Surely viewers giggled as Matthews talked about Clinton giving Lincoln “the full Bill.” Boy, that hug, that goes down in history, he had the French cuffs, looked like a million bucks, he put the full Bill around her. It was really an embrace. And you notice it was gender, because when she came out of that hug she was actually just overwhelmed physically, it was like you could see in her face, “I can`t believe the guy likes me that much and wants to help me that much.” It was great. It was very real. Matthews even claimed Clinton was a terrific asset in “culturally conservative Democratic” areas – as if being a “cultural conservative” isn’t at odds with what Bill Clinton represents. But Matthews is still channeling the more-conservative-than-Obama line from 2008, and then he broke down and said Clinton is great anywhere he goes: The big message coming out of this is, if you`re running, if you`re Joe Sestak running for the Senate this fall, you want him in western Pennsylvania, you want him in the culturally conservative Democratic areas. You want him in New Hampshire, another state where Bill Clinton is enormously popular is Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. If you`re running in Ohio, you want him there. You want him in Missouri, Kentucky — all that sort of state — you want him. In fact, you want him almost anywhere. There were some other notable tidbits sprinkled in: Carly Fiorina’s Deal with the Pro-Life Devil? “Fiorina, I don`t think can win a general election because she`s pro-life. She may have taken that position — opposition to Roe versus Wade, opposition to a woman`s right to choose an abortion. But she now has to stand by that politician in the general. I think that might a Faustian deal for her. That may be a real problem. They haven`t elected a pro-life candidate for high office since Deukmejian way back in the 1980s.” Teddy Roosevelt’s the only iconic figure on Mount Rushmore? Asked why a poll found John F. Kennedy should go on Mount Rushmore, Matthews explained: “I think it`s because his life had the arc of a hero, very much like Teddy Roosevelt. Who people think of when they think of Mount Rushmore, Teddy Roosevelt, he`s the one up there that`s really iconic.” Once again, Matthews ignores that many see JFK as the original TV-era cheating-horndog president. Crist will win, and caucus with the Democrats like Joe Lieberman . “I think Charlie is going to beat the band. He`s going to win the general anyway…Yes, he will be the senator, and I think he will organize for the Democrats.” Democrats won’t lose big in the Senate. “So they can win four or five seats as well as lose six or seven, so I think they can get away with only losing two or three seats in the Senate. In the House, I think they face — they`ll lose 40 seats is tough. I think they`re going to be pretty good — Rahm Emanuel will be pretty good – – they will be putting in the sealers. They will be holding off what they can.” Sarah Palin is an effective demagogue. Matthews previewed his “Rise of the Right” documentary by repeating the lines about how the tea-party movement is anti-government: “Sarah Palin is the queen of this group, the leader of this group. She represents the ability — if you listen to her, she`s very attractive and comes off in a traditional way as sort of an attractive woman from the west. “But if you listen to her, her agitation is brilliant. She gets people mad at their government, she gets people mad at them, the Obama crowd. She uses sarcasm, that demagogic language , which is very effective. If you listen to her rallies those people are angrier when she’s done. She’s very good at it and very smart at how to lead that crowd.”

The Long History of Scandal’s Supporting Players [Rogues Gallery]

As the heat from the Tiger Woods sex scandal cools, the once paparazzi plagued Rachel Uchitel will again settle into the cold grip of obscurity. She is one of scandal’s secondary players, and we are done with her. Thanks to a little vehicular mishap on Thanksgiving, Uchitel became a household name as the first of Tiger’s skanks to be identified. As these things usually go, we rushed to find out everything we could about her, the press called up her friends and family, her privacy was invaded, and cameras greeted her every public appearance. But now Tiger has finally apologized and we’re moving on to the next mock outrage. What’s left for Rachel? Well, not much. She’ll get some small press notes if she gets married, appears on a reality show, or goes on a killing spree or something like that. Other than that, bubkis. It’s back to the civilian life. Uchitel is one in the long line of colorful characters who we got to know and love (or love to hate) but then discarded as soon as we were done with her like a crusty Kleenex on an adolescent’s bedroom floor. Here are some other recent and notable examples in various stages of the bit player’s trajectory. Rachel Uchitel Scandal : Tiger Woods’ little infidelity thing. Role : Either one of his ladies or the lady who procured other ladies for him. Power Play : Has generally shied away from the spotlight, although that seems to be changing now that she’s accepting a gig to appear on Extra . Eventual Fate : Fading. And fading fast. Golan Cipel Scandal : Jim McGreevey ‘s coming-out and resignation as governor of New Jersey. Role : Supposedly had a relationship with McGreevey and threatened to sue him for sexual harassment, which forced the former governor to come out. Power Play : Did a media tour around the time McGreevey’s book came out and declared that he didn’t have a relationship with him. He even launched a website . Eventual Fate : Golan who? Linda Tripp Scandal : Bill Clinton ‘s sexxxy impeachment. Role : A Pentagon employee who taped conversations between herself and Clinton intern Monica Lewinsky about Lewinsky’s hanky panky with the president. Power Play : Sued the government for releasing information from her personnel records to the press. Won a $600,000 settlement and kept her pension. Fine way to retire! Eventual Fate : Went on Larry King Live to discuss her battle with breast cancer in 2003, but has been silent since then. Kato Kaelin Scandal : OJ Simpson’s murder trial. Role : Of all the characters this scandal brought us, OJ’s permanent houseguest was always our favorite. Power Play : It’s been a long road of silly movies for Kato, from radio and TV show hosting gigs to even seedier fare like serving as host of National Lampoon’s Strip Poker on pay-per-view. Eventual Fate : He is still kicking around the sad fringes of the reality TV show world, starring on the now defunct Fox Reality’s Gimme My Reality Show in 2008 and some random web series last year. Ashley Dupré Scandal : Eliot Spitzer’s hooker scandal. Role : The hooker. Power Play : She’s still trying to maker her music career happen, and moonlights as a runway model and NY Post columnist . Eventual Fate : Fighting her own downward spiral. Levi Johnston Scandal : America’s love affair with Sarah Palin . Role : He knocked up Palin’s daughter, was forced into a suit at the Republican National Convention, and was then pushed to propose to her. Power Play : He cashed in a bit with an article in Vanity Fair and earned love from the gays for his pictorial in Playgirl . He keeps threatening to write a tell-all about the Palins, but we don’t know that he knows how to write. Eventual Fate : He’s going head to head with the Palin clan in a messy custody battle . He’ll eventually be washing cars in Wasilla as a fat, bald man. Sadly. Donna Rice Scandal : Gary Hart’s sex scandal, aborted bid for the presidency. Role : She was the other woman. Power Play : A contract as spokesperson for No Excuses jeans. Eventual Fate : She works as an anti-porn advocate these days, which makes us not like her. Larry Birkhead Scandal : Anna Nicole Smith ‘s overdose and death. Role : Though many claimed to be the one, Birkhead is actually the father of Smith’s daughter, Dannilynne who was born shortly before her mother’s death. Power Play : Has been selling pictures of Dannilynne for years. Eventual Fate : Except for the persistent gay rumors, we’ll forget about him until his daughter comes of age and enters the tabloids herself. Kari Anne Peniche Scandal : The McSteamy non-sex tape. Role : This one we created all by ourselves . She was the third girl in the tub with Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart in the famous chat à trois tape. Power Play : She has a single , y’all! Eventual Fate : We didn’t even like her the first time around.

Bill Clinton Released From Hospital After Surgery

Bill Clinton was released this morning from a New York hospital after having two stents into a clogged coronary artery Thursday after complaining of chest pains. The one-hour procedure went smoothly, according to the former President’s cardiologist, and the 63-year-old was discharged this morning “in excellent health.” Clinton will soon return to his work on Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery, his office said, and will both recover fully and resume his “very active lifestyle.” Bill, who could have suffered a heart attack had this gone untreated, had the heart surgery at the same place where he had quadruple bypass surgery in 2004. “This was not a result of either his lifestyle or his diet, which have been excellent,” Clinton’s cardiologist, Alan Schwartz, told reporters from the hospital steps. A few stents won’t slow a good former president down. Schwartz said putting in stents were just another step in an ongoing process: “Just as illnesses have natural histories, treatments have natural histories.” Clinton has been working at a grueling pace since the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, but says his demanding schedule did not contribute to heart problems. Clinton, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, is overseeing the U.S. response with former president George W. Bush and has been there twice in recent weeks. Clinton was working on issues related to Haiti when he felt chest pains. As he was being wheeled into the operating room, he was still on a conference call. Pretty standard for this guy. Bill’s daughter, Chelsea , joined him at the hospital, an aide said, as did wife and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. President Barack Obama called Clinton yesterday evening and wished him “a speedy recovery,” a White House aide said. THG wishes Big Daddy the same.
