How Would Simon Cowell Actually Critique the Superstars in the New X Factor Promo?

One interesting aspect of American Idol ‘s legacy is the angst leveled at contestants who haven’t become Billboard smashes. Is Melinda Doolittle less talented than Kelly Clarkson because she didn’t have a Hot 100 hit? I think not. It takes a certain type of skill set to emerge from a talent competition with untarnished durability (and credibility), and frankly, plenty of our singing superstars wouldn’t have made the leap. Let’s take a look at the new promo for Simon Cowell’s X Factor , which touts plenty of stars who have the all-important “It” factor (including Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga), and see how Simon would appraise them in a regular audition.

Might Justin Bieber Go Insane?

Debbie Gibson knows a thing or two dozen about success as a teenager. At the age of 17, she became the youngest singer to write, produce and release a number-one hit on the Billboard 100. So at least this 40-year old is speaking from experience when she says of Justin Bieber’s fame: “It’s too much too soon. People have to remember, even though a kid can be wise beyond their years professionally and can handle showbiz, emotionally you’re not developed.” Justin Bieber is mature for his age. The kid has a mustache! Gibson only has Bieber’s best interest in mind, fearing the cute idol will “lose his sanity” at this rate, although Justin says he’s already there . “If I could get all these kids in a room, I’d tell them you’re not superhuman,” Gibson told E! News. “If you need to take a week off, take a week off. Everybody makes you think the world will end and it won’t. If you say no, you save your sanity later.” Bieber, of course, has no plans to slow down. His 3D biopic hits theaters in February. So far, this 16-year appears to have his head on straight, although the same thing can’t always be said of his fans. Case in point .

Justin Bieber Biography

By now the story of how Justin Bieber came to be is the stuff of legend. In an age where fame is only a viral video away, Bieber’s meteoric ascension to pop super stardom is still an exception, not yet a rule. Born in Stratford, Ontario, to a single, teenage mother, Bieber grew up playing sports, while secretly teaching himself how to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. It wasn’t until he was 12, that Bieber was ready to show the world what he could do. After placing second in a local singing competition, his mother posted a video of his performance on YouTube for friends and family that weren’t able to attend. The video went viral, and Bieber’s mother continued uploading videos of Bieber covering a string of syrupy hits by the likes of Usher, Justin Timberlake and other future colleagues. justin bieber impresses usher When the former marketing executive of So So Def, Scooter Braun, accidentally stumbled upon Justin Bieber’s YouTube channel (he was actually trying to track down a different singer) he knew he had found a star. Braun literally hunted Bieber down — tracking down former teachers, school board members and even unearthing footage of Bieber busking in front of a theater. Though Bieber’s mother originally envisioned her son serving God through his music, she gave in to Braun’s aggressive advances. After continuing to build his profile on YouTube, Braun arranged a meeting between his keen protege and R’n’B impresario Usher. Bieber’s natural charisma and talent immediately impressed Usher — who had once been in Bieber’s shoes — who signed him to Raymond Braun Media Group. Just like that, the prepubescent tween from Stratford, Ontario, had a record deal with Island Records, and a new home in Atlanta, where his path toward super-stardom began. justin bieber releases my world By the time Justin Bieber released his debut EP My World in 2009, he already had the luxury of a mass following shrewdly constructed by his management team on YouTube. In short, there was no way this thing would fail. Couple Bieber’s arsenal of syrupy confection of R’n’B pop, with his newly polished urban teenybopper aesthetic (thanks in large to his Usher-appointed swagger coach Ryan Good) and tween girls everywhere had found their ultimate crush. The record debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard charts with four singles landing safely in the Top 100. It wasn’t long before Bieber-mania was as ubiquitous as text messaging, with the mop-topped one performing for everyone from Ellen DeGeneres to Mr. and Mrs. Obama. justin bieber releases my world 2.0 When Justin Bieber released “Baby,” the infectious lead single off his follow-up disc My World 2.0 , he had become one of the music industry’s foremost saviors — a camera-ready Messiah in purple sneakers and a straight-brimmed cap. The single propelled My World 2.0 to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, making Bieber the youngest male solo act to top the chart since Stevie Wonder did it in 1963. But by now, Justin Bieber had become more than just a best-selling pop star — the pint-sized pipsqueak from Stratford, Ontario had become a genuine cultural phenomenon. Gigs on Saturday Night Live , The View and The Late Show meant that in 2010, there was no escaping Justin Bieber. can justin bieber escape the backlash? Justin Bieber’s omnipresence in the media, and his lightning-quick rise to fame were sure to inspire backlash, especially in the quick-to-hate blogosphere. Bieber’s shrewd embracing of social media (the boy tweets!), and his easy-to-pick-on effeminacy (lesbians who look like Justin Bieber has become its own meme) made him an easy target for both critics and creeps. Internet trolls have perpetuated a string of maliciously preposterous rumors about the Biebster; no he does not have syphilis, no he has not joined a cult, and as far as we know he’s not dead. But despite his many critics, Bieber has been embraced by the cred-solidifying hip-hop community; he pals around with Drake, Ludacris appears on his album; and Kanye West’s admitted fandom led to a much-tweeted about remix of Bieber’s “Runaway Love” featuring none other than Wu-Tang’s street disciple Raekwon. love him or hate him, justin bieber isn’t going anywhere If Justin Bieber was the prince of 2010, he may just end up being the king of 2011. So for all the haters out there, a warning: Justin Bieber is here to stay. With his best-selling tour wrapping up in December, Bieber has spent the last year dominating the internet (he was the most searched celebrity in July), inspiring riots and hysterics everywhere he went (remember the riot in Long Island?) and performing in some of the most revered venues in the world. Bieber’s recent gig at Madison Square Garden was filmed for his upcoming 3-D biopic due next winter, and his new album will feature at least two songs produced by Dr. Dre. Yes, Dr. Dre — he of gun-toting NWA fame — is producing two songs for the grinning charmer with pearly whites from Stratford, Ontario. Is it the end of the world as we know it?

R.I.P.: Bernie Wilson Of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes Dead At 64

Bernie Wilson (the gentleman photographed to the right of Teddy P) has passed away: Bernie Wilson, a baritone member of the rhythm and blues group that produced the 1972 hit “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” has died. Wilson, 64, died early Sunday at Kresson View Center in Voorhees, N.J., following a stroke and a heart attack, his cousin, Faith Peace-Mazzccua, said Monday. Philadelphia International Records, the former record company for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, said Wilson’s death leaves Lloyd Parks as the sole surviving member of the group’s lineup at the time. The lineup also featured Teddy Pendergrass and Lawrence Brown. The group produced a string of R&B hits in the ’70s and helped define the Sound of Philadelphia. “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” topped the R&B charts and made the top five on the pop charts. The hits that followed included “I Miss You,” ”Bad Luck,” ”Wake up Everybody,” and the dance track “The Love I Lost,” which has been credited as one of the first disco records, according to an All Music Guide biography on the Billboard website. “He left home at 16 as a pauper and came back home a millionaire,” Peace-Mazzccua told The Associated Press. She said her cousin kept performing until a few years ago and hoped to return and sing gospel music. “Bernard was a very funny person. He should have been a comedian,” she said. “He didn’t take no stuff and he loved people.” Funeral arrangements were pending Monday. R.I.P. Via Associated Press

Crystal Bowersox Debut Album Sales: Not Terrible

It could have been worse for Crystal Bowersox. A month after American Idol champion Lee DeWyze watched his debut album sell fewer copies during its first week of release than any CD in show history, Crystal’s “Farmer’s Daughter” moved 57,804 units. That figure was good enough for number-28 on the Billboard 200 Chart. It was also about 20,000 more sales than her fellow finalist’s initial effort. Among other American Idol alums, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia and Daughtry also earned spots this week on the Billboard 200.

2010 VMAs Nab MTV’s Biggest Ratings Since 2002

Awards show was the third-most-watched telecast on MTV ever. By Kelley L. Carter Chelsea Handler onstage during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards scored the biggest audience for any MTV telecast since 2002. The VMAs grabbed 11.4 million viewers and is the #1 cable telecast of 2010 for the network, followed by MTV’s hit reality series “Jersey Shore,” and the third-most-watched telecast on MTV ever. There were plenty of must-watch moments at this year’s awards show, and the buzz building days before the show about surprise performers likely contributed to the sizable turnout. This year’s show saw much-anticipated performances by Taylor Swift (who debuted a new song addressing last year’s controversy with Kanye West) and West himself, who also debuted a new song that seemed to address his fall from pop-culture grace. The show also featured performances by rappers Eminem, Drake and Best New Artist winner Justin Bieber. Newcomer Nicki Minaj and Black Eyed Peas mastermind Will.I.Am performed together at the VMA pre-show. Host Chelsea Handler opened up the show with a skit that featured Lindsay Lohan . In the pre-taped clip, the comedienne makes her way to the stage (and gets slapped on the butt a couple of times along the way). She meets up with the troubled actress, who pokes fun at her own struggles with sobriety before giving Handler a bit of advice: “Don’t embarrass me.” “Every year, MTV celebrates the music and creative genius of artists we have the privilege of working with all year long,” said Van Toffler, president of the MTV Networks Music & Logo Group. “Last night’s luminescent VMA setting provided the perfect backdrop to do just that and we’re thrilled the audience resoundingly agreed.” Share your VMA reviews in the comments!
