Chime In: Serena Williams’ GQ Cover Faces Backlash Because “Woman” Is In Quotations

SplashNews.com Twitter Speaks Their Mind On Monday, Serena Williams was announced as GQ ‘s Woman of the Year and some people aren’t too hype about the cover that was unveiled. Instead of putting “Woman of the Year” in plain text, “Man of the Year” is printed with “Man” crossed out and replaced with “Woman” in quotations. Announcing GQ's Men (and Woman) of the Year 2018: @michaelb4jordan , @henrygolding , @jonahhill , and @serenawilliams (featuring handwriting by @virgilabloh ) https://t.co/EpG3lKCJ3r #GQMOTY pic.twitter.com/6MgczSxSpq — GQ Magazine (@GQMagazine) November 12, 2018 The quoted “Woman” was handwritten by designer and Williams collaborator Virgil Abloh. Abloh, the man behind Off-White and Louis Vuitton, designed Serena’s US Open tutu dress and he often uses quotation marks on his Off-White designs. However, some people on Twitter didn’t grasp this context and they believed the quotations used for Serena were insensitive to ridicule she’s received in the past. Serena has constantly been labeled a man or unhuman-like for her athletic skills and body type. Someone I follow pointed out that @GQMagazine decided to put woman in quotes on Serena's cover and I too am offended and disgusted knowing the gender slights and digs people still throw at @serenawilliams . https://t.co/um9oYV6Pr0 — I'm That Type Of Guy (@Marrrrcussss) November 12, 2018 They really put “Woman” in quotes in reference to Serena and no one at the table thought it was a bad idea. I'm speechless. — King Wizard (@ChrisTheHuman_) November 12, 2018   Some folks even understood the Virgil reference but still were offended. Everyone knows Virgil. We know his designs. We get the quotations. Doesn’t mean putting quotes around woman makes it any less insensitive esp. considering the masculinization of Serena and black women in general! — Kae (@akaeleehb) November 13, 2018 One Twitter user even pointed out that Gal Godot was named Woman of the Year by GQ last year, but her “Woman” wasn’t in quotation marks. Serena is the magazine’s sole Woman of the Year, which doesn’t make matters any better. The Men of the Year include Michael B. Jordan, Henry Golding,  and Jonah Hill.  Serena has yet to speak publically on the cover, but she’s been candid in the past about ridicule she’s faced about her gender. Last year, in a reddit post , Williams said: “I’ve been called man because I appeared outwardly strong. It has been said that I use drugs (No, I have always had far too much integrity to behave dishonestly in order to gain an advantage). It has been said I don’t belong in Women’s sports — that I belong in Men’s — because I look stronger than many other women do. (No, I just work hard and I was born with this badass body and proud of it).” She addressed the issue some more back in May when she told Harper’s Bazaar , “People would say I was born a guy, all because of my arms, or because I’m strong. I was different to Venus: She was thin and tall and beautiful, and I am strong and muscular — and beautiful, but, you know, it was just totally different.” What do you think of the GQ cover? Too much or is it just another designer’s signature stamp?

We Get Shot Regardless: Chicago Security Guard Killed By Cops After Capturing Bar Shooter

Image via inhauscreative/Getty Chicago Security Guard Killed By Cops After Apprehending Shooting Suspect Apparently, there is no circumstance under which a Black person cannot be killed. Unarmed, not resisting, hands up, on the ground , showing proper paperwork, even stopping a crime can cost you your life when you are a person of color dealing with the police. According to TMZ , Jemel Robinson was a security guard at Manny’s Blue Room Bar in Chicago when he had to escort a drunk group of gentlemen from the premises. Said gentlemen then returned bearing firearms with intent to kill. After a gunfight, Jemel was able to apprehend one of the suspects until police arrived. He put a knee in the man’s back and held a gun on him. An officer who responded to the call fired and killed Jemel dead on the spot. A witness to the killing said that the trigger-happy cop “saw a black man with a gun, and basically killed him.” URGENT: Here is what happens when a good (BLACK) guy with a gun tries to intervene in a mass shooting. #JemelRoberson A beloved church musician in Chicago who moonlighted as a security guard was shot & killed by police after he stopped a mass shooting at an area bar. pic.twitter.com/uRPqEEFqKX — Shaun King (@shaunking) November 12, 2018 https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js Roberson was a musician at several local churches who actually wanted to BECOME a police officer.
