Houston is still reeling after a 7-year-old girl was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting on Sunday. Now a journalist and civil rights attorney are teaming up to offer a reward for her killer. Journalist Shaun King and civil rights attorney Lee Merritt have come together to offer a $35,000 reward to find the man who shot and killed Jazmine Barnes Sunday. Barnes was with her mother and siblings on Sunday when her mother, LaPortia Washington , had taken them to the store to get coffee when a man in a 4-door red pickup truck pulled alongside them and opened fire. Barnes died at the scene. Her mother has been hospitalized since the shooting. The shooter is described as a white male in his 40s, with a beard. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. His motive is unknown. Listen. I have $35,000 in cash for the person who turns in the murderer of 7 year old Jazmine Barnes. You can contact me confidentially. And I can give you the money without anyone knowing it was you. She did not deserve this at all,” Washington said from her hospital bed. “I just want anybody, whoever out there that knows anything about the murder of my daughter, please step up as if it were your own,” Jazmine’s father, Christopher Cevilla, told reporters. Cevilla has created a GoFundMe to pay for funeral expenses for Barnes. “We’re not going to rule anything out. At this point, our focus is identifying who the shooter is and locating him and after that we can determine motive,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. Investigators ask all residents in the Wallisville Rd/E. Sam Houston Pwky area to review security video from the morning of 12/30. Looking for a red 4-door pickup involved in the fatal shooting of Jazmine Barnes, age 7. Image via inhauscreative/Getty Chicago Security Guard Killed By Cops After Apprehending Shooting Suspect Apparently, there is no circumstance under which a Black person cannot be killed. Unarmed, not resisting, hands up, on the ground , showing proper paperwork, even stopping a crime can cost you your life when you are a person of color dealing with the police. According to TMZ , Jemel Robinson was a security guard at Manny’s Blue Room Bar in Chicago when he had to escort a drunk group of gentlemen from the premises. Said gentlemen then returned bearing firearms with intent to kill. After a gunfight, Jemel was able to apprehend one of the suspects until police arrived. He put a knee in the man’s back and held a gun on him. An officer who responded to the call fired and killed Jemel dead on the spot. A witness to the killing said that the trigger-happy cop “saw a black man with a gun, and basically killed him.” URGENT: Here is what happens when a good (BLACK) guy with a gun tries to intervene in a mass shooting. #JemelRoberson A beloved church musician in Chicago who moonlighted as a security guard was shot & killed by police after he stopped a mass shooting at an area bar. pic.twitter.com/uRPqEEFqKX — Shaun King (@shaunking) November 12, 2018 https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js Roberson was a musician at several local churches who actually wanted to BECOME a police officer. Image via Richland County Two Black Officers Killed In South Carolina Shootout 74-year-old Frederick T. Hopkins has been charged with the double murder of two Black police officers in Florence, South Carolina. Sgt. Terrence Carraway died on the scene back on October 3 and Investigator Farrah B. Turner died this past Monday after weeks of fighting to stay alive. Police went to Hopkins home earlier this month to talk to his son about a sexual assault investigation and things went very, very left. The shootout left 6 officers shot, one who is still in critical condition and the two who have passed away. ABC Columbia reports that Turner had to have both of her feet amputated and underwent 9 surgeries. Shaun King took to Instagram to point out the fact that Republicans, the NRA and other far right groups who were screaming “blue lives matter” as a faux outraged response to “Black lives matter” haven’t said a peep. The same people who spouted off false narratives about the “Ferguson effect” haven’t a word to say about this. Guess you gotta be white AND blue for your life to matter. Sad, but not the least bit surprising.
D oubts are increasing that law enforcement officials will conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of Botham Jean , an unarmed Black man who was shot dead in his own apartment by a Dallas police officer. SEE ALSO: Botham Jean’s Mother Demands Justice And Calls Out ‘The Devil,’ Amber Guyger S. Lee Merritt , one of the civil rights attorneys representing Jean’s family, retweeted a message on Saturday night from activist Shaun King that’s adding fuel to the concerns. “A key eyewitness told us today that investigators didn’t take a single note when they interviewed her. Said they never called her back. We asked the DA if they had even heard that this witness existed and the DA said the Texas Rangers never even mentioned the witness,” King tweeted. In an earlier post, King said a sixth person joined other witnesses who contradicted Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger ’s version of how the shooting unfolded. BREAKING: Another close neighbor of Botham Jean came forward today to say that they also heard Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger in the hallway, banging on the door, yelling for Botham to open the door. That’s SIX witnesses who say this happened. Debunks her fabrications. — Shaun King (@shaunking) September 16, 2018 Dallas’ Black community had hoped that the conviction in August of a white former officer , Roy Oliver , who shot unarmed Black teenager Jordan Edwards in the head was a turning point in the city’s long history of cops going unpunished for killing Black people. But the investigation into the slaying of Jean suggests to many that things have not changed, the Dallas Morning News reported. “We consider that to be progress. But whether it’s precedent or some kind of aberration, only time will tell,” John Fullinwider , co-founder of Dallas’ Mothers Against Police Brutality, said of the Oliver verdict as he attended Jean’s vigil. Many have complained about the police giving Guyger special treatment. She has stated multiple and conflicting versions of the circumstances that led to the shooting. Guyger claimed that she mistakenly entered Jean’s apartment, thinking that it was her own place, and shot 26-year-old Jean. It took days for law enforcement officials to arrest her. Neighbors have said they heard Guyger banging on Jean’s door , but the officer has claimed that it was open when she entered. “If she had been arrested like anyone would be, the community would have felt a little more at ease. There’s no story, of the multiple stories she’s told, that should not have prompted an arrest on the spot,” said Edwin Robinson , executive director of the religious-based network Faith in Texas. D oug Jones made history in Alabama last week, but things are already looking shaky for the folks who supported him. As we reported, on a Sunday interview with CNN, the Senator-elect from Alabama said that people should “move on” from Donald Trump ‘s sexual assault allegations. The comment was bizarre, considering part of the reason he won in Alabama was due to people not wanting a pedophile in the U.S. Senate. Imagine if voters “moved on” from Roy Moore’s sexual misconduct accusations and decided to focus on “real issues.” See below: Sen.-elect Doug Jones of Alabama doesn’t join the several Senate Democrats calling for President Trump to step down: “I think we need to move on and not get distracted by those issues … I don’t think the President ought to resign right now” #CNNSOTU https://t.co/EAY9mhL1QI — CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) December 17, 2017 Now, it appears to have gotten even worse. Writer and activist Shaun King is reporting Jones will appoint an all-White senior staff in Alabama because he feels “burdened.” See the tweet below: Have now had a few people tell me that they believe Doug Jones, who was propelled to victory by nearly unanimous Black support, is likely to appoint an all-white Senior Staff. He “feels burdened” to appeal to conservatives in Alabama, they say. — Shaun King (@ShaunKing) December 21, 2017 Let’s hope this isn’t true, especially considering the only reason Doug Jones won was because of the Black vote. If he wants to represent his constituents, he should have a diverse senior cabinet. Twitter clearly wasn’t here for it: Doug Jones Remember RE-ELECTION is going to come! There are qualified African Americans in Alabama! — valerie282 (@valerie282) December 21, 2017 Dear Doug Jones…. Sincerely, Black community !! pic.twitter.com/zMkxrGQxDu — coopcon (@conniecooper558) December 21, 2017 Doug Jones also wouldn’t speak out against Trump’s sexual harassment. He hasn’t done a damn thing YET! Damn! Hes tired already? Oh Lord! — Deanne Price (@hulahamom) December 21, 2017 All eyes are on you, Mr. Jones. Shaun King Got Dragged Off Of Twitter Shaun King’s role in the Black Lives Matter movement has been an interesting point of contention to say the least. While his role in reporting the unjust murders of Black men and women across the country has been invaluable, his other work has been questioned from the very beginning. There were numerous incidences of him allegedly asking for money for various causes – Tamir Rice, Bree Newsome, etc. – and stories coming out that the cash didn’t go where he said it would. Then there’s the story of Justice Together – and organization headed by King that fell apart under speculation of more money mismanagement. Things came to a head Sunday night when King sent out this tweet aimed at Deray and Netta in defense of his own practices of sharing videos without trigger warnings beforehand. The tweet was messy and disappointing and ended up with people finally coming for him for receipts and his “shady” maneuvers in the past. Take a look. No matter what ends up happenings, we hope King keeps reporting on the injustices we face every day as it’s incredibly important work. Still, this was not a good look for him.
#CivilRightsTwitter Blows Up The Internet Man, our people sure know how to turn anything into comedy. After Shaun King sent his shots and got dragged off Twitter, the Internet started a #CivilRightsTwitter to show what would happen if activists of yesteryear had access to social media. The results are the funniest thing you’ll see today.
People want to know if Black Lives Matter activist, Shaun King, is just another Rachel Dolezal. But Jeff Johnson says there’s more to the story than what…
