The Black Eyed Peas Recall Prince’s ‘I Gotta Feeling’ Praise

‘Those songs don’t come all the time,’ will.i.am remembers the Purple One telling him. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway will.i.am performs with the Black Eyed Peas at Terminal 5 in New York City Photo: MTV News In 2009, the Black Eyed Peas found incredible success with their feel-good party track “I Gotta Feeling.” It was a multicultural club banger that was all about being with your pals and embracing those moments of pure party joy. Now, it’s become a staple of their live show , and frontman will.i.am was surprised to learn about one of the song’s biggest fans. “I remember we played the song in Minnesota, and Prince was at the show, and he called me on the phone afterwards. He said, ‘Congratulations,’ ” will.i.am recalled. “He says, ‘You know, those songs don’t come all the time. You’re blessed to have one of those songs. You know, they’re gifts.’ I was like, ‘Wow.’ For someone like Prince to tell you that, that’s bigger than a Grammy for me.” Night after night, the song gets an incredible response from fans. “When we perform it, in my mind, like, ‘Where did that song come from?’ I can’t believe this is us and look at all these people singing it like it’s theirs,” he told MTV News when we caught up with the group at Terminal 5 in New York, where they were taping a show set to air Friday night (April 22) at midnight ET on MTV. “Wow, that’s a beautiful thing.” That song came just at the right time, since the band was looking for a way to update their concerts. “We used to do ‘Let’s Get It Started’ at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn’t really make sense. And for a while, [we did] ‘My Humps’ and then it got to the point where we didn’t want to play ‘My Humps’ no more. You know, ’cause ‘I met a girl down at the disco,’ I just didn’t want to say that no more, lyrically. “It wasn’t like my best lyrically, but it was fun,” he continued. “It wasn’t lyrical miracles, but the beat was rocking, so we throw the beat in there and just let the beat linger, but now ‘I Gotta Feeling’ is like ‘What?’ ” Don’t miss the Black Eyed Peas’ performance Friday at midnight ET on MTV.

Black Eyed Peas Go For ‘Old-School Club Vibe’ At NYC Gig

Performance airs Thursday at midnight ET on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Fergie performs with the Black Eyed Peas at Terminal 5 in New York City Photo: MTV News The Black Eyed Peas are known for their over-the-top stage show, which includes fashions made from Legos or lasers and usually includes a very high production value. So when the group hit up the smaller Terminal 5 in New York City to tape a show, they decided they would focus on the music and not the antics. “Old-school club vibe, intimate, spontaneous,” Fergie explained of the gig, which will air Thursday at midnight ET on MTV. Her bandmate, Taboo, added that with such an extensive repertoire of tunes, “It’s hard choosing, but you know the ones,” he told MTV News before BEP took the stage for the high-octane performance. The band’s unspoken leader, will.i.am, said that every time they release a new track that explodes and becomes an undeniable radio staple (which for this group happens often), they have to adjust their live show to go with the flow of their evolution as a group. “Before we had ‘I Gotta Feeling,’ it was like, ‘We know we gotta play “Pump It” and “Let’s Get It Started,” ‘ ” will.i.am explained. “We used to do ‘Let’s Get It Started’ at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn’t really make sense. And for a while, [we did] ‘My Humps’ and then it got to the point where we didn’t want to play ‘My Humps’ no more. Adele Back At #1 On Billboard

Punkers Rise Against crash the boards at #2, while Travis Barker bows at #9. By Gil Kaufman Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage Adele will retake the #1 position on the Billboard 200 next week after dropping down to the #2 slot last week. Sales of Adele’s 21 album were down 26 percent, but it still manages to retake the top thanks to 98,000 units moved, pushing the British R&B smoothie over the 750,000 mark after four weeks, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was enough to keep veteran punks Rise Against down at #2 with the debut of their latest, Endgame, which sold 85,000 copies to edge out last week’s #1, Lupe Fiasco ‘s Lasers, which sits at #3 on sales of 47,000 as sales dropped by 77 percent. The only other debut in the top 10 comes from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker , whose all-solo bow, Give the Drummer Some, lands at #9 (28,000). The rest of the top 10: Glee: The Music, Volume 5 (#4, 43,000), Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#5, 41,000), Justin Bieber , Never Say Never – The Remixes (#6, 34,000), Avril Lavigne , Goodbye Lullaby (#7, 32,000), NOW 37 (#8, 30,000) and Marsha Ambrosius , Late Nights & Early Mornings (#10, 28,000). It was a short trip to the top 10 for veterans R.E.M. , whose Collapse Into Now slips 16 slots to #21 in its second week as sales dropped by 67 percent to 19,000. But apparently an appearance on “American Idol” last week was enough to boost the sales of the Black Eyed Peas’ slow-moving The Beginning, which jumps 16 places to #28 as sales were up 24 percent to 13,000, putting them just short of 600,000 in four months. The show even helped goose the sales for last season’s “Idol” winner, Lee DeWyze , whose dead-on-arrival debut, Live It Up, re-enters the top 200 after falling off the charts for six weeks. DeWyze, who also performed on “Idol” last week, quadrupled his weekly sales totals to 5,000, racing back into the top 200 at #96 and pushing the disc closer to 130,000 in total sales, the worst showing yet by an “Idol” winner. “iCarly” star Miranda Cosgrove’s second album, High Maintenance, comes in at #34 (11,000), while sales for a 10th anniversary “Idol” hits compilation were tepid, as the disc limps in at #136 with nearly 4,000 units shifted. Over on the iTunes albums chart, Rise Against take the top spot, followed by Adele, Fiasco, Mumford, the “Glee” compilation, Barker, Rihanna ‘s Loud, Bieber’s My World 2.0, Lavigne and Ambrosius. The iTunes singles chart belongs to Katy Perry ‘s collabo with Kanye West , “E.T.,” which edges out the first original “Glee” single, “Loser Like Me,” and the Black Eyed Peas’ “Just Can’t Get Enough.” The rest of the iTunes top 10 singles: Rihanna, “S&M”; the “Glee” cast, “Get It Right”; Lady Gaga , “Born This Way”; Chris Brown , “Look at Me Now”; Jennifer Lopez , “On the Floor”; Cee Lo Green , “Forget You” and Ke$ha , “Blow.” Next week should see a serious shuffling at the top, as stores will be stocking Jennifer Hudson’s second album, I Remember Me, as well as the first new disc in five years from the Strokes, Angles, and, fresh off a controversial window-bashing TV appearance, Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. Black Eyed Peas Debut ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ On ‘American Idol’

‘This song is about love and strength and is dedicated to our friends in Japan,’ will.i.am says before performance. By Kelley L. Carter Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am and Fergie Photo: FOX On Thursday night’s (March 17) “American Idol” results show, Ryan Seacrest teased that the winner of this season could soon go head-to-head on the charts with the Black Eyed Peas, who hit the stage to perform their new single, “Just Can’t Get Enough,” for the first time. “This song is about love and strength and is dedicated to our friends in Japan,” will.i.am said from behind a piano before the dance track kicked in. Fergie opened the song, sitting atop the all-white piano and wearing a white halter dress, singing the first few notes of the new track. Eventually will, dressed in a white suit, stood up from behind the piano and joined her onstage to sing, while the other Peas members, apl.de.ap and Taboo, also dressed in white, danced, sang and rapped alongside them. Behind them onstage, string players performed, dancers twirled about and couples acted out skits. They ended the performance by jumping around and encouraging the audience to leap to their feet and clap along. BEP have been doing their best to help relief efforts in Japan. The song’s video, which premiered on Wednesday, was also dedicated to the embattled island nation, where the group shot the clip just one week before the earthquake and tsunami struck. At the beginning of the video, this message runs across the screen: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people of Japan. We love you.” This wasn’t the first “American Idol” appearance for the Black Eyed Peas. They performed “Boom Boom Pow” during the season-eight finale , when Kris Allen was crowned the winner, and they’ve also helped out during the show’s “Idol Gives Back” special. Fergie ‘Stoked’ About Kids’ Choice Awards Performance

The Black Eyed Peas are among the musical guests set to appear at Nickelodeon’s big bash, which airs on April 2. By Jocelyn Vena Fergie Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images The Black Eyed Peas have been announced as one of the performers at the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards , which go live on Nickelodeon on April 2. The group’s sole lady, Fergie, says she’s excited about appearing at the event, but it seems that she has one reservation about the gig. “I’m so stoked for the Kids’ Choice Awards,” Fergie told UsMagazine.com , but added, “I hope we don’t get slimed!” Of course, many celebrities have gotten covered in green goo at the awards bash over the years. (Who could forget last year’s show, when a blue-wigged, latex-wearing Katy Perry got soaked in slime ?) Jack Black is set to host the Kids’ Choice Awards again this year. It marks the actor’s third time emceeing the fun-filled ceremony. “Anyone can host something once. But if they ask you back a second time, that means they liked the way you did it,” Black explained recently to Entertainment Weekly . “And if you host a third time, that means the first time wasn’t a fluke, and it means you did good two times. So the third time, well — that’s the real achievement.” With stars like Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber all up for blimps in various categories at the 2011 show, anything can happen. Multiple nominee Nick Jonas recently spoke to us about the event and really wants someone in his family to take home a prize this year. (Not only are the Jonas Brothers competing for the Favorite Music Group honor, but Nick and his brother Joe also have scored Favorite TV Actor nods.) “We’re really blessed to be nominated for favorite band again this year,” he said. “We’d love to win it. That’d be great. We’re up against some great people, who have had some great success. “And as far as the best actor nomination goes, I’m really shocked by that. As far as the acting thing goes I’m still learning,” Nick added. “I don’t know if I’ll win it. I hope I do. Maybe the fans will vote for us. It’s always funny with me and Joe, it kind of splits the vote a bit and so maybe just vote for Kevin. I think no matter if Joe or I did win, I’d be like, ‘I think Kevin’s the funniest actor out of all of us. He deserves this.’ ” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Related Artists Fergie

Britney Spears Collabo Is ‘A Monster,’ will.i.am Says

Black Eyed Peas frontman calls Femme Fatale track ‘something that today needs.’ By James Dinh Britney Spears Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Days after his glow-in-the-dark Super Bowl XLV halftime performance, will.i.am is already working on his next high-profile gig: a collaboration with Britney Spears . After the “Hold It Against Me” singer tweeted about the team-up Tuesday, the Black Eyed Peas’ leading man opened up about his studio session with the pop princess. “I just came from the studio right now,” Will told The Associated Press . While hesitant to give away details, he did gush about the tune, emphasizing the song’s place in today’s music scene. “It’s a monster,” he said. “It’s mean, pretty, edgy, next level. But the beat just … It’s that beat. She’s singing fresh over it. It’s something that today needs.” While many fans were pleased to hear about the pop partnership, some weren’t so keen on a tweet will.i.am posted shortly after Spears’ collabo announcement. It read, “I just found out some people don’t tweet themselves they have teams of tweeters for them … Wow.” After Team Britney went after the producer, he clarified his sentiments : “Britney tweets for herself I saw it with my own eyes when we recorded in the studio today,” he wrote. “She’s such a sweet heart she’s a perfectionist. You guys read into things way to hard … shame on who ever thought I was talkin about britney … so sad people want to start things.” In the end, Will reverted the focus back to his tune with the pop star, tweeting, “The song I did with britney is ganna be crazy fresh. from the super bowl to the studio workin on a mega smasher. can’t wait till its done.” As Britney continues her daily tease-a-thon for the “Hold It Against Me” video , which will premiere February 17 on MTV, her collaboration with will.i.am might be one of her final studio sessions in completing her new album, Femme Fatale . Scheduled to drop March 29, the LP is expected to include production credits from Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Fraser T. Smith and Bloodshy & Avant. One producer who might not be making the final cut, however, is William Orbit (Madonna’s “Ray of Light”), according to one of his latest tweets. “did a song w Klas Ahlund, who wrote ‘Piece of Me’. And is killa. But not on FF apparently. But a good song is a good song regardless,” he wrote. What do you think Britney and will.i.am’s collabo will sound like? Tell us below!
