Tom Cruise And Will.I.Am Explain How ‘Knight And Day’ Song Came To Be

‘When you can collaborate with a film you love, that’s a rare moment,’ Will tells MTV News of ‘Someday.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News What happened when mega movie star Tom Cruise met mega music star Will.I.Am? The song “Someday,” which the Black Eyed Peas hitmaker composed for Cruise’s upcoming summer thriller, “Knight and Day.” MTV News recently caught up with Cruise and Will to talk about how their collaboration came to be. “First of all, I’m a fan of the Peas,” Cruise told MTV News. “We met at a charity event and got to talking: ‘We’ve got to find something to do together.’ … We were three-fourths of the way done [filming] ‘Knight and Day,’ and the Peas were playing in Miami, so we all went — Kate [wife Katie Holmes], Cameron [Diaz] and all of us went to go see them over Super Bowl weekend. As we were watching, it occurred to me that this is the perfect time, so I called up Will, and he doesn’t have any time, but I asked, ‘Are you interested [in doing a song for the film]?’ ” “I made time,” said Will, who was then shown portions of the film to get ideas for the track. “It was easy, because the film was so good and it inspired me to write the song. When you can contribute and participate and collaborate with a film you love, that’s a rare moment. That’s a godsend.” Cruise was impressed with Will’s ability to immediately tap into the theme of the film — and the fact that he composed on his phone. “He wrote the song on his BlackBerry,” Cruise marveled. “Right in the room.” “I don’t like to let that inspiration fly away, so I jot it down in my notes,” Will explained. “For ‘Someday,’ the lyric was ‘Someday/ I don’t want it to be one day, I want it right now.’ So when I left the editing [room], I wanted to remember the emotion I was supposed to put into the song.” “It was very cool,” Cruise said of Will’s process. “[And] totally organic to the film. I think it’s an incredible song.” In the film, which has been described as a “sexy action/comedy,” Cruise is Agent Miller, a covert operative sent on a mission from which he was not intended to return. Diaz is June Havens, a woman caught between Cruise’s agent and those he claims set him up. Through a series of double-crosses, narrow escapes and mistaken identities, they soon realize they can only count on each other. “Knight and Day” is directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line,” “3:10 to Yuma”) and also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, Maggie Grace and Marc Blucas. The film opens June 25. The Black Eyed Peas debuted “Someday” on Thursday at an afterparty that followed their concert at London’s O2 arena. At their Friday show in London, Cruise joined the group onstage and helped them perform their chart-topping song “I Gotta Feeling.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Knight and Day.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kelly Rowland Thanks David Guetta, Lady Gaga For Dance-Music Craze

‘He studies his music, and he sees what people react to,’ singer says of Guetta, who worked on her upcoming LP. These days, it seems as if everyone is getting in on the dance-music craze, which has been fueled by chart-topping releases by everyone from Lady Gaga and Ke$ha to the Black Eyed Peas and Akon . And the genre’s resurgence has a lot to do with the rise of the celebrity DJ, as seen with music-industry darling David Guetta . Kelly Rowland , who worked with Guetta on much of her forthcoming, yet-untitled solo album, said she has all the aforementioned artists to thank for the sound on her project. “We have wonderful artists to thank, like Gaga, who have opened up the doors and just really made it start to be a thing,” the former Destiny’s Child member told MTV News when she stopped by the offices on Wednesday (May 26). But the credit doesn’t just go to Gaga: “With David and the Black Eyed Peas, Will.I.Am, we have them to thank,” Rowland added. Rowland might be a bit biased when it comes to Guetta. The two have found chart success already with their 2009 song “When Love Takes Over,” so it felt natural for them to reunite on this project, including the album’s first single, “Commander.” She loved having him bring his musical vision to her project. “He studies the crowd and, I think, he studies his music, and he sees what people react to,” she said. “And that’s what separates him, for me, [from] any other producer.” Are you excited to hear what else Rowland and Guetta have in store for her album? Fergie Is ‘Perfect’ in ‘Gettin’ Over You’ Video, David Guetta Says

‘This is going to be my best video ever’, DJ/producer tells MTV News of new collabo, also featuring Will.I.Am and LMFAO. By Akshay Bhansali, with reporting by Damian Vaca David Guetta Photo: MTV News The French house-music DJ/producer who produced last summer’s Black Eyed Peas hit “I Gotta Feeling” is planning a repeat chart assault. David Guetta just shot the video for his “Gettin’ Over You,” a song he’s convinced will be the summer anthem of 2010. “I have no words. This is going to be my best video, I’m sure,” Guetta told MTV News when we caught up with him at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, fresh off the video shoot. The seemingly endless obsession with “I Gotta Feeling” hasn’t gone unnoticed by Guetta, who may be following a formula for success by reuniting with some of the song’s key players. (The massive hit from the Peas’ album The E.N.D. spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 last year and remains a club staple.) “Gettin’ Over You” features Will.I.Am, Fergie and LMFAO. It’s only fitting, then, that the new clip includes a nod to the first collaboration that helped make Guetta a crossover star. “The video is the story of what happened to me when I came to produce ‘I Gotta Feeling’ for the Black Eyed Peas,” Guetta said. “It was my first time in that studio called Record Plant. I was so impressed, and we started to work with Will.I.Am and more and more artists were coming to say, ‘Hello,’ and were like, ‘Oh, this music is different.’ And they were staying. Girls were starting to dance on the couch. “So the inspiration for my video is really that. We’re in recording sessions — me, Fergie, LMFAO, [singer] Chris Willis — and then more and more people are partying in the studio. We party in the streets. Partying in the area … partying in the city.” Oddly enough, Guetta’s energetic onstage demeanor is in direct contrast to his comfort level with the acting required for a music video. “I’m so bad. I can only be myself,” he laughed. “I’m such a bad actor, it’s terrible. If you tell me, ‘Do what you usually do,’ it’s kind of OK. So I’m producing that record, that’s what I’m doing in the video.” But the dance-music phenom could only rave about Fergie’s performance. “I look stupid, you know, totally suck,” Guetta said. “Her, it’s the opposite. They say ‘rolling,’ and she knows exactly what she’s doing, like, the angle, the look, the light. I asked her after we shot, ‘Did you have a monitor? Could you see yourself?’ Because it was so perfect.” What do you think of David collaborating with the Peas again? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists David Guetta Fergie
