Will Black Keys Team Up With Ke$ha? First They Want Jim Nabors

The duo sat down with MTV News in Berlin to discuss a pair of unlikely collaborations. By James Montgomery Black Keys Photo: MTV News Theirs is a relationship that has spanned time and Twitter, seafood and shaving , but over the years, the unlikely bond between the Black Keys and Ke$ha has grown to become something more : a genuine friendship, marked with the occasional trespassing charge. “We’re friends with her, we’ve known her since way before she was famous, before she was even a singer, I guess,” Keys drummer Patrick Carney told MTV News. “When she was 16 years old, she used to sneak into our shows. We kind of became friends with her by kicking her out of our backstage room, over and over again. She actually has snuck into shows in L.A., San Diego, Coachella …” “She snuck in and [got] kicked out of one show, like, five times,” frontman Dan Auerbach added. “[She] snuck in through the kitchen. I don’t know if she’s such a big fan; she just likes breaking the rules.” So, when MTV News sat down with the ‘Keys in Berlin during the premiere of their “Gold on the Ceiling” video, we had to ask if their friendship with Ke$ha would take the next step: an actual musical collaboration. It’s not all that far-fetched, considering both Ke$h and Auerbach live in Nashville (“I see her every once in a while flying by in her T-Top [convertible],” Auerbach laughed), and recently, the glittery one has logged studio time with the Flaming Lips . So, could we see a team-up on the next Black Keys album? “I guess, I don’t know,” Carney said. “We don’t really do that many collaborations, really.” OK, so if a Ke$ha collabo isn’t in the cards, just who would the ‘Keys like to work with next? Well, as it turns out, they’ve got their eyes set on landing a very big star for the next record … even if they mistakenly believe he’s deceased. “We both want to work with Jim Nabors very badly, but apparently he’s not with us anymore,” Carney said. Oh, but he is. Which means that, much like Nabors, the dream is alive. The Ke$ha collabo? Eh, probably not so much. Should the Black Keys hit the studio with Ke$ha? Leave your comment below! Black Keys’ ‘Gold On The Ceiling’ Video Keeps It Simple

‘Lonely Boy’ follow-up is light on bells and whistles, heavy on what made them the sensation they are today: killer live sets. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach in “Gold on the Ceiling” Photo: Warner Bros. There are no dancing actors/security guards , precocious street-fighting children or cameos by “Sir” Todd Bridges in the Black Keys’ new “Gold on the Ceiling” video . But don’t let their absences sway you — in a lot of ways, this was the video the Keys were born to make. The clip, which premiered Monday night (February 6) on MTV, features only the Black Keys (and various members of their road team) doing what they do best: playing live, in gloriously gritty fashion. It’s not only a nod to their roots — for close to a decade, they hammered out gigs (and miles) aboard a rusty van — but it’s a powerful reminder to their detractors that they are, first and foremost, a positively killer live act. Of course, it was also probably a matter of necessity. The Black Keys are rather busy these days, what with their smash album and world tour, so shooting a live video (in part during their MTV Hive-sponsored El Camino release party at New York’s Webster Hall) undoubtedly made their management happy, but you get the feeling that Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney probably delighted in making a concert clip. After all, it fits rather nicely with their anachronistic ways. Of all the monster rock acts currently lumbering, the Black Keys seem the most natural fit for a live video. No bells or whistles, no special effects, just a band, a stage and some grainy footage. It’s easy. So while “Gold” may be lacking in all those things (not to mention odd, inbox-baiting cameos), it is by no means a lesser video. If anything, it represents everything that makes the Black Keys the band they are — hard-charging, unpolished and seemingly not-of-this-era, indebted to their past yet still pushing forward and always determined to do things on their own terms. Big-selling album and high-profile second single be damned, the Black Keys just want to do it live and do it loud. It’s what got them here, after all. What did you think of the Keys’ latest video? Black Keys Talk Lana Del Rey’s Overnight Success

Duo also address their own critics tonight on MTV.com following the ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ video premiere at 7:54 p.m. on MTV. By James Montgomery The Black Keys Photo: MTV News On January 8, 2011 — nearly a decade after they first started kicking around in Akron, Ohio — the Black Keys made their first appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Needless to say, it was a pretty big moment for Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, who had spent no small portion of the past 10 years grinding out miles (and shows) in their van. On January 14, 2012 — nearly six months after she first became a much-debated blog curio — Lana Del Rey performed on the same “SNL” stage . It was a pretty big moment, too, though mostly for her critics and those who enjoy deriding the current state of popular music. After all, they argue, it’s debatable whether Del Rey has ever seen the inside of a van, let alone toured in one. So when MTV News sat down with the Black Keys in Berlin — for an exclusive interview you can watch tonight (February 6) on MTV.com, following the MTV premiere of the duo’s new “Gold on the Ceiling” video at 7:54 p.m. ET — we had to ask them for their thoughts on Del Rey’s overnight success, and what it meant for bands trying to make a living in 2012. “On some level, we’ve seen that Lana Del Rey thing since we first started, like, all of a sudden this new band would be headlining festivals, and we’re like, ‘Wait, how did they get that? We’ve been here for two, three, four, five years and we’re still working our way up,’ ” Auerbach said. “But then they’re gone. Just as quickly as they get up there, they disappear.” “It’s different for everybody. It took us a really long time to get on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and it took her a shorter amount of time,” Carney added. “But I honestly feel bad for a lot of bands that are starting out with the way things are. … The trends kind of flip over so fast — something’s cool and not cool and it all happens within two to three months.” Of course, it bears mention that the same outlets that have criticized Del Rey for her perceived lack of authenticity and quick rise to a major-label deal are the very same outlets that have largely ignored (or largely ripped) the Black Keys, a band that has spent a decade making the slow climb to the top. And when it came to that point, well, the Keys didn’t exactly hide their displeasure. “Yeah, [it’s] ’cause they’re pricks,” Carney snorted. “It’s like, ‘What the f— are you talking about, motherf—er?’ ” And though you’ll hear more of their thoughts on the media during our full interview, you can reasonably assume that the Black Keys don’t take criticisms kindly. In fact, they’ve been taking mental notes, and someday they’ll even the score. Don’t miss the premiere of the Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling” video tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an in-depth chat with the band on MTV.com. Katy Perry To Perform At Grammy Awards

Singer’s “Firework” is up for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Katy Perry will take the stage at the Grammy Awards on February 12. The two-time nominee was announced as the latest performer on Wednesday (February 1). The currently blue-haired pop star is up for Record of the Year for her feel-good empowerment track, “Firework.” The Teenage Dream single is also up for Best Pop Solo Performance. This is hardly her first time performing on the show. At the 2011 Grammys , she performed her songs “Not Like the Movies” and “Teenage Dream.” The Valentine-themed performance also included the debut of footage from her wedding to her now-estranged husband, Russell Brand. In 2009, Perry performed her breakthrough hit “I Kissed a Girl” surrounded by giant, glittering pieces of prop fruit. And in 2010 she took the stage at the Grammy Nominations show and sang her ubiquitous candy-coated track, “California Gurls.” The same day that Perry was announced as a performer, fellow nominee Drake was announced as one of the night’s big presenters, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley. Adele announced her long-rumored Grammy performance on Tuesday. It marks her first performance since a November vocal surgery. “I’m immensely proud to have been asked to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards,” Adele said. “It’s an absolute honor to be included in such a night and for it to be my first performance in months is very exciting and of course nerve-racking, but what a way to get back into it all.” Rihanna, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Jason Aldean and Nicki Minaj are also confirmed to perform live at the 54th annual awards show, which will be hosted by LL Cool J. On Monday, February 6, at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, the band will premiere their brand-new video for “Gold on the Ceiling,” during “MTV First: The Black Keys.” And then, immediately following the clip’s debut, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney will sit down for an exclusive 30-minute interview that will stream on MTV.com. In that interview — filmed last weekend before the Keys’ sold-out show in Berlin, Germany — the dynamic duo discuss their rather improbable rise to fame, the current state of rock music, and what’s next (a new album already?!?). They also answer questions submitted by fans via Twitter. After the premiere of the “Gold on the Ceiling” video (which features footage from the band’s album release concert, which streamed live on MTV Hive), the clip will go into rotation on mtvU and MTV Hits, and will premiere on MTV.com, VH1.com and AMTV the following morning. The video will also debut on “MTV2’s 120 Minutes With Matt Pinfield” on February 10 as part of a special Grammy-themed episode, and VH1’s “Top 20 Countdown” on February 11. Daniel Radcliffe Recalls ‘Lovely Chat’ With Darren Criss

Actors have ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘How to Succeed in Business’ connections but only just met, Radcliffe tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News For a while, it was a running joke between Daniel Radcliffe and Darren Criss that the “Harry Potter” star and “A Very Potter Musical” star had yet to meet, even though the two shared a “Potter” connection, celebrity status and Criss succeeded Radcliffe in the hit Broadway revival of “How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” MTV News recently caught up with Radcliffe, and he revealed that, at long last, the two actors finally met just before Criss took over Radcliffe’s role for a limited run. “We have met. I can confirm, we have met,” Radcliffe said with a smile. “Somebody showed me a very doctored photograph of our meeting; there were no photographs at our meeting, so if that’s what people are interested in, they’re going to be disappointed. “But no, I had a lovely chat with him, talked about the show, I don’t really deign to give advice, but I gave him my number and same with Nick Jonas and said, you know, ‘Contact me if you’ve got anything to ask. I’m always around.’ I passed on a joke to him that Matthew Broderick gave to me which Robert Morse gave to Matthew Broderick,” Radcliffe explained of an inside joke shared by Morse and Broderick, who also played the role of J. Pierrepont Finch in “How to Succeed.” “So that’s become sort of a legacy joke now, which is nice.” Criss will only be in the show for three weeks until he has to return to work on “Glee,” after which Jonas will take over January 24 through July 1.
