Black Keys Go Big On El Camino, In Between Chick-Fil-A Visits

Keys scored highest chart debut of their career earlier this week, when El Camino opened at #2. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Black Keys Photo: MTV News Earlier this week, building on the breakout success of their Brothers album and powered by current single “Lonely Boy,” the Black Keys’ El Camino roared to a #2 debut on the Billboard albums chart , by far their biggest bow to date. And though many were surprised by the first-week numbers, the Keys themselves weren’t. After all, they’ve known the stakes were higher from the minute they started recording El Camino — even though they tried very hard to ignore that fact. “We were aware that more people were paying attention to us than ever had, but we tried not to let it get into our heads,” drummer Patrick Carney told MTV News. “It definitely didn’t affect the making of the album, but, you know, we were trying to take advantage of the situation, because we’ve been a band for a decade and the whole point, for us, was to play to as many people as possible without compromising. So we put a lot of time and effort into the new record. We’ve made records in 14 hours before; this one we spent 40 days on.” Of course, that extended stay in the studio had just as much to do with the band’s increased stature as it did with El Camino ‘s expanded scope. From its skuzzy, fuzzy guitars to the pealing organs and keening backing vocals, it packs a whole lot into just 38 breakneck minutes, taking the Keys’ signature two-man racket to newfound places and spaces. “When we started the songs, it was completely organic, but once we start going, and we get the foundation done, we really start to concentrate on the little details that sort of make it what it’s going to be, because sometimes those little details can be really impactful,” frontman Dan Auerbach said. “And that’s why it took us longer than it’s ever taken us to make a record.” Though most are quick to chalk that expansion to the band’s work with producer Danger Mouse (whom they’ve collaborated with since 2008’s Attack & Release ), the Keys say that it was mostly due to them wanting to take full advantage of everything Brothers provided. In fact, the majority of their conversations with the Mouse involved nothing more than chicken. “Most of our discussions were about Chick-fil-A,” Carney laughed. “Yeah,” Auerbach added. “The distance to and from Chick-fil-A.” Related Artists The Black Keys

Black Keys ‘Lonely Boy’ Video: Meet The Dancing Machine

Actor/musician/security guard Derrick T. Tuggle’s smooth moves earned him a starring role in the Keys’ new clip. By James Montgomery Derrick T. Tuggle in The Black Key’s “Lonely Boy” music video Photo: Warner Music Group Forget about that “Evolution of Dance” guy or the “Double Dream Feet” dude. The real Internet dancing sensation may very well be Derrick T. Tuggle, the 48-year-old actor/musician/part-time security guard currently setting the Web ablaze with his smooth moves in the Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” video . For the uninitiated, the clip stars Tuggle — and only Tuggle — as a herky-jerky dance machine who grooves to the Keys’ new single while standing outside a motel room. Over the course of three-plus minutes, as the sleeves of his dress shirt become increasingly unrolled, he cycles through a series of rather amazing moves (and even mimics a few of the lyrics) before triumphantly thrusting his fist skyward as the song comes to a close. It is a decidedly odd, strangely compelling performance, and because of it, the “Lonely Boy” video — the first clip from the Keys’ El Camino album — has racked up nearly 400,000 views in less than 24 hours. It’s also made a rather unwitting star of Tuggle, even though (up until right now), no one knew his name. But what’s even more amazing is the fact that his star-making turn almost didn’t happen at all, as Tuggle told MTV News on Thursday (October 27). “I was cast as an extra, and there were maybe six or seven other people who were supposedly going to be in the video. … I was the first one to perform in the video. It was a motel shot where the guys from the Black Keys come and give me the keys to their motel room,” he said. “The director just sort of noticed me dancing and asked me, ‘Can you perform?’ I said, ‘I can dance, anybody can dance,’ so I took some moves from everybody: John Travolta from ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Pulp Fiction,’ the Carlton Banks dance from ‘The Fresh Prince’ and a little bit of Michael Jackson, so it was a smorgasbord of everybody in there. “It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing,” Tuggle added. “My acting teacher Mark McPherson, he has us do this thing before we start class called ‘Song and Dance,’ where he’ll have us sing one of our favorite songs, and then while we’re singing it, he’ll have us do a crazy dance, or a sexy dance, and I guess it spawned from that.” The end result is most definitely crazy — not to mention rather incredible, considering Tuggle nailed the routine in a single take (“As an actor, you have to know your lines, you have to be ready, so I was,” he explained). And though he’s had music-video experience in the past (he’s done background work in clips for the Dave Matthews Band, Lenny Kravitz and Lloyd), he’s never experienced anything quite like the reaction to “Lonely Boy,” and he’s hoping it will translate to more roles in the future. “I’m elated, and I’m still in shock, to be honest. I’ve been out [in Los Angeles] for 10 years, pursuing acting and music, so hopefully this will lead to more work,” he said. “Honestly, I just went down there to do my part and see what would happen. Who knew I would take over the whole thing?” What did you think of Tuggle’s moves? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The Black Keys

Black Keys’ ‘Lonely Boy’ Video: Dancing Fool

Oddly compelling clip gives us the first listen to their new single and showcases some seriously funky dance moves. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” music video Photo: Warner Music Group Perhaps not content to let Coldplay’s Chris Martin soak up all the glory for the unicycle skills he showcases in his band’s new “Paradise” video, on Wednesday (October 26), the Black Keys unveiled their own delightfully odd video , for “Lonely Boy.” And let’s just say: It’s your move, Mr. Martin. The “Lonely” clip may or may not be the actual video for the first single from the Keys’ El Camino album (a spokesperson for their label, Nonesuch, did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time, though the fact that it’s titled as a “first listen” leads us to believe there’s a proper clip to follow). While it features little more than one fabulously funky gentleman and his dazzling array of dance moves, it is truly amazing to behold. Basically, it validates the existence of the entire Internet. Mostly because, dang, can this dude dance. The Twist, the Carlton, even an MJ thrown in for good measure, he does it all, getting down in what appears to be the garage of a used car dealership (probably the same one Bob Odenkirk works at) while “Lonely Boy” blasts in the background. In fact, he even mouths most of the lyrics and acts a few of them out for us too. Much like the garage it is filmed in, this video is full-service. While, sure, it would be easy to write the “Lonely Boy” clip off as just another viral video, that would be selling it short. It is a deceptively brilliant, oddly compelling and cleverly handmade thing, the kind of vid that practically begs to be watched over and over again (and believe me, I’ve spent the entire afternoon doing just that). There’s not only an uninhibited joy to the man’s moves, it doesn’t hurt matters that the song is pretty fantastic too: a herky-jerky, down-and-dirty boogie powered by some raunchy guitar and a keening organ. If anything, it makes me excited to hear even more of El Camino, which is out December 6. No word on whether the gentleman in the “Lonely Boy” video will be involved in any future promotion, but I’ve got my fingers crossed. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to watch this thing again. And again. What do you think of the “Lonely Boy” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The Black Keys

Black Keys To Return December 6 With El Camino

Follow-up to band’s breakout Brothers disc will be preceded by first single ‘Lonely Boy,’ due October 26. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ El Camino Photo: Nonesuch Bob Odenkirk doesn’t mess around. One day after a viral video starring the “Mr. Show” and “Breaking Bad” comedian as a used-car salesman pitching a “used, fully loaded El Camino” hit the Net (which instructed interested folks to contact Dan or Pat, a.k.a. the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney) comes official word that the Keys’ brand-new album is, in fact, called El Camino, and it’s due December 6. That’s according to the band’s publicist, who said the follow-up to the duo’s breakout Brothers album is completed and will be in stores just in time for the holidays. It features 11 tracks, including first single “Lonely Boy,” which will be released October 26. Fans can pre-order El Camino beginning Tuesday (October 11) on the Black Keys’ website . Produced by Danger Mouse (who did the band’s 2008 album Attack & Release ) and recorded in Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, Camino sees the band pushing their blues-and-garage-based sound even further, as Carney told MTV News backstage at the Video Music Awards in August. “He’s a really good friend of ours, and he’s super talented. It’s always … interesting,” Carney said of working with DM. “It’s comfortable, but at the same time difficult, because he does push us to do things we normally wouldn’t do. … I hope it sounds different enough that people see that we’re still evolving.” And, hey, like the Keys said late last month, it’s definitely hitting stores before Blakroc 2. The track list for El Camino, according to the Black Keys’ publicist:

Black Keys Still ‘Evolving’ On Brothers Follow-Up

In addition to Keys’ seventh LP, a second Blakroc album is also on the horizon. By Gil Kaufman The Black Keys Photo: Warner Bros. Records The Black Keys typically keep it simple: two guys, drums, guitars and thick slabs of bluesy goodness. They also keep it quick, which explains how the duo has already recorded their follow-up to 2010’s breakthrough album, Brothers, according to drummer Patrick Carney.

‘Eclipse’ Soundtrack Includes Vampire Weekend, Beck, Dead Weather

Metric, Florence and the Machines, Black Keys, the Bravery also announced in slowly revealed lineup. By James Montgomery Vampire Weekend Photo: Francois Guillot/ AFP/ Getty Images We already knew Muse were onboard for the much-hyped “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack, but on Wednesday (May 12), we learned who else would be joining them … albeit very slowly. Yes, the folks over at MySpace Music — perhaps taking a page out of the Bonnaroo playbook — decided to reveal the names of each artist (and song) on the album individually, with a new name being unveiled every 30 minutes. And given that there are 15 spots to be revealed, well, we hope you’re not doing anything for the next seven-and-a-half hours. Anyway, at the time of this writing, seven acts and songs have been revealed, a list that includes Vampire Weekend (who contribute a song called “Jonathan Low”), Beck (who duets with Bat for Lashes on “Let’s Get Lost” — no word from Atlantic Records on whether it’s a cover of the Elliott Smith song or of the old jazz standard), the Bravery (“Ours”), the Dead Weather (“Rolling in on a Burning Tree”) and Metric, who nabbed the album’s opening spot with a track called “Eclipse (All Yours).” Other confirmed artists and songs are Florence and the Machine (“Heavy in Your Arms”), Akron hammers the Black Keys (“Chop and Change”) and London-based pop act Fanfarlo (“Atlas”). The first single off the “Eclipse” soundtrack is Muse’s rather excellently titled “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever),” which was revealed on “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s official site last week. The single will head to radio on May 17. As previously reported, the “Eclipse” soundtrack is due in stores on June 8 , which is probably right around the time MySpace will be finished revealing the last of the artists that will appear on it. What do you think of the “Eclipse” lineup so far? Is it missing anyone you were hoping for? Sound off in the comments. Damon Dash Brings Artists Together With DD172

Mos Def, RZA, the Black Keys can be found collaborating at the hip-hop mogul’s new art gallery/ music studio. By Steven Roberts The Black Keys Photo: Nonesuch Damon Dash recently took MTV News on a tour of his new Lower Manhattan art gallery/ studio compound, DD172. It’s weird to think that the shirtless guy in the “Big Pimpin’ ” video exposing his six-pack abs and splashing models with Armadale vodka has an art gallery, but Dame would like to broaden the definition of a hip-hop mogul.
