My Favorite Movies of 2010

I was hesitant to make a top 10 movie list this year because, really, who cares what I have to say? But then I started thinking, Yeah… who cares what I have to say? Without the title of “movie critic,” I can just choose whatever movies I want — the ones that I truly enjoyed the most — as opposed to movies that I know are technically great or that any film fan should definitely see, but may not be as emotionally pleasing to my Big 12-school-educated mind. I know that a “favorite movie list” from an Internet writer my age is supposed to include Inception and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World , it’s almost blasphemy for it not to, but mine doesn’t.

Natalie Portman Engaged And Pregnant

Actress is having her first child with ‘Black Swan’ choreographer Benjamin Millepied. By Terri Schwartz Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Natalie Portman has had one of the biggest years of her career in 2010, but it looks like 2011 is going to be even bigger. Portman is engaged to her boyfriend, choreographer Benjamin Millepied, and the two are expecting their first child, according to People. The two met during production of “Black Swan,” where Millepied acted as choreographer and Portman’s onscreen dance partner, and the two started dating in early 2010. This will be the first marriage and first child for Portman. When Millepied spoke to Details magazine in June about Portman, he said he was “blown away” by her acting abilities and that she was “amazing to watch.” But he did add that the two of them were trying to keep their relationship private. “It’s … everybody’s asking us,” he said. “We just want to keep things to ourselves.” In addition to her exciting personal news, 2011 is also looking bright professionally. Portman is nominated for her third Golden Globe for “Black Swan,” her first nomination for a leading role. She is likely to also be nominated for her first Oscar in a leading role and is one of the front-runners to win it. She also has three big films headed to theaters: the romantic comedy “No Strings Attached,” the medieval drug comedy “Your Highness,” and the latest Marvel film “Thor.” Share your well-wishes for the couple in the comments! Michelle Orange’s Top 10 Films of 2010

Asking what films I’ve seen recently is a good way to wipe my brain clean. Once, in a job interview where it was clear the answer would determine my fate, all I could come up with was Calendar Girls , which would have been a poor choice even as a recent release, which it was not. Tabulation is not a strong suit. Rubrics wear me out. A recent report on people with brains like databases with total recall made me itch, and yet the chemistry made sense: An abundance of adrenaline caused ordinary events to imprint in their memories the way only extraordinary events — or even amazing shots, bravura scenes, and other bits of movie magic — do for the rest of us.

5 Ridiculous Scenes in Otherwise Good Movies of 2010

Looks like we’ll be treated to 10 Best Picture nominees worth the recognition this year. (Take that, 2009, The Blind Side , and Up in the Air !) But now that 2010 is almost kaput, it’s high-time for a reality check of the year’s best films — an unflinching glimpse back at the times when even quality cinema stumbled in its path to greatness. Here, we explore five great films with five really ridiculous (and questionably forgivable) scenes.

Mila Kunis Chows Down on Natalie Portman’s Punis in Black Swan

After finding success with The Wrestler over the 2008 holiday movie season, Darren Aranofsky is wowing critics again this Christmas with another melodrama about athletes whose difficult and dangerous physical feats have shattered their bodies and lives. Black Swan , a creepy melodrama starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis as rival ballerinas and sometime Sapphic scissor sisters, has been garnering rave reviews despite its limited release and even more limited nudity (i.e. none). The skingy stars of Black Swan may have ruffled Mr. Skin’s feathers by refusing to show T&A during their beaverly awaited girl-girl face-pirouette scene but if you love lesbians, you can still jackoffsky to some Tchaikovsky with this movie. An hour and eight minutes in, the ballerina babes take the fast boat to Lesbos when they start making out in Natalie’s room. We don’t see any pubes, but things get hot and heavy with Mila makes a swan dive into Natalie’s crotch. Talk about a face dance! So if you’re a fan of A-list lesbian scenes, then go check out the ballerina-on-ballerina flick Black Swan . It won’t be your shoes that are pointe-ing!

Oscar Favorites Find Their Scores Ineligible for Oscar

When the Academy Award nominations are announced next month, it is expected that Black Swan , The Fighter , True Grit and The Kids Are All Right will be among the most recognized films. Just not in the Best Original Score category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences music branch has ruled that all four Oscar contenders are ineligible for the award.

Natalie Portman to Spread the Plague of Non-nude Sex Comedies

After putting in a disappointingly non-nude (but Golden Globe-nominated) performance as a bi-curious ballerina in Black Swan , Natalie Portman has now announced plans for a female comedy production company that looks dubious at best. Natalie has long been a critic of Mr. Skin’s life work. Earlier this year, she swore off all future nude scenes and told Elle UK , “I’m definitely not a prude about sex or nudity, I just don’t want do something that will end up in a screen grab on a porn site.” And now the actress is creating a new production company to make “raunchy” female sex comedies that sound like they’ll have less nudity than Saudi Arabian Sesame Street . “There’s a difference,” Natalie told Vogue , “between being in a bra and underpants as an object on a men’s magazine cover and playing yourself – a woman with desires and needs who loves and laughs with her friends – in a bra and underpants.” Who said anything about a bra and underpants?

SAG Award Nominations Led By ‘King’s Speech,’ ‘Fighter’

Nominated actors also include Jeff Bridges and 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld for ‘True Grit.’ By Eric Ditzian Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter in “The King’s Speech” Photo: See Saw Films The Screen Actors Guild Awards nailed it last year. The organization’s picks for outstanding actor, actress, supporting actor and supporting actress all ended up winning Oscars in their respective categories. Will the SAGs end up being an accurate Academy Award predictor once again this year? The new nominations were announced Thursday morning (December 16), honoring both longtime Oscar front-runner “The King’s Speech” and freshly energized “The Fighter” with four nominations each. “The Social Network,” which was expected to be a serious contender for multiple Oscars, received just two nods. “Black Swan” and “The Kids Are All Right” nabbed three nominations each. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be aired on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 30, at 8 p.m. ET from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. SAG’s top honor goes not to a film and its producers but to the project’s entire cast. The nominees this year are “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network.” The category of Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role veered slightly away from the Golden Globe nominations in the dramatic actor category earlier this week, with Robert Duval (“Get Low”) and Jeff Bridges (“True Grit”) sneaking into the pack. They join Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”), Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) and James Franco (“127 Hours”). Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”) and Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) remain Oscar front-runners after being recognized for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor, alongside Nicole Kidman (“Rabbit Hole”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone”) and Hilary Swank (“Conviction”). Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) continued his stellar awards season with a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. His fellow nominees are John Hawkes (“Winter’s Bone”), Jeremy Renner (“The Town”), Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids Are All Right”) and Geoffrey Rush (“The King’s Speech”). Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role appears to be a wide-open field, with nods going to Amy Adams (“The Fighter”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech”), Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”), Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) and 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”). After notching the most Globe nominations, HBO rose to the top of the SAG class this year with nine nominations (AMC owned the field last year). Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama nods went to “Boardwalk Empire,” “The Closer,” “Dexter,” “The Good Wife” and “Mad Men.” Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy nominations went to “30 Rock,” “Glee,” “Hot in Cleveland,” “Modern Family” and “The Office.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
