Everything To Know About Black Women’s Equal Pay Day

The rest is here:

A ugust 7 marks Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, bringing awareness to the demeaning statistic that it takes an additional 219 days for African-American women to earn the annual salary of white men. Gender and race pay disparities have led to Black women earning only $.63 cents on the dollar compared to white men, Equal Pay Today reported. Women of color have had to work more than 7 months into 2018 just to match that majority group’s 2017 pay scale — a fact that is equally alarming and urgent to address in our society. Today is Black Women's Equal Pay Day ⠀ ⠀ Did you know the Average Black Woman had to work all of 2017 + 8 months of 2018 JUST TO MATCH the pay rate of a White Male? ⠀ ⠀ Did you know… https://t.co/DTEzBcZMYU — MohipFinancialSolutions (@MohipFinancial) August 7, 2018 Looking deeper into the issue, Black women are at a worse disadvantage than other racial groups. Their pay lags behind white woman and Black men as well. The factors contributing to the startling gender and racial wage gap run the gamut: bias, employment discrimination, inadequate minimum wage, and a lack of pay transparency and accountability among many companies across the nation. The absence of affordable child care and quality public school education, as well as the failure to give Black women access to capital, also influence the disparities. Closing the wage gap would greatly benefit Black mothers: 80 percent of them are the primary breadwinners for their households according to Fortune . With equal pay, mothers would be able to afford better child care, pay rent with less stress and put more food on the table. Black Women’s Equal Pay Day stands as an event for women of color to demand more, raise their voices for more and seek solutions for more. The world can’t play with pay as Black women deserve parity. They can ask for a closing of the wage gap as employees, consumers and at the voting booth. Editorial: You Love Killmonger At The Expense Of Black Women

*THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS HEAVY SPOILERS FOR BLACK PANTHER* One of the beauties of Black Panther is the fact that there are so many sides to a political debate and everyone has a defensible point. T’Challa wants to maintain Wakandan peace in solitude without worrying about outsiders (namely Westerners) infiltrating and destroying their way of life. Nakia thinks Wakanda can be a beacon of peace for the rest of Africa, and the world, offering its technological advances to better subjugated countries. Erik Killmonger wants to use Wakandan weaponry to initiate a worldwide black revolution. He wants to use vibranium-powered technology to take down the countries that have colonized and pillaged blackness for centuries. His stance in particular has garnered a passionate following on social media and melinated brunches across the country. Get a group of people together to debate Black Panther and you may see as many people riding for Killmonger as anyone else in the movie. The defense of Killmonger is pretty typical, because we as a society are so incredibly capable of overlooking someone’s treatment of black women on the road to being pegged as a revolutionary. In short, Killmonger is simply an abuser and murderer of black women and defending him means a willingness to accept his treatment of those black women on the way to faux-liberation. Here are the times Killmonger laid hands on people in the movie: 1. He shot his girlfriend in the head to get her out of the way so he could kill a white man. Which, c’mon, the symbolism there is really what this whole article is about, right? 2. He defeated T’Challa in ritual combat. Okay, fine. He won fair and square (after giving a monologue about the people from black and brown countries he’s killed along the way). 3. He choked an elder black woman because she didn’t want to burn down all the remaining heart-shaped herbs. Which, by the way, if he were really about liberating all of his people instead of just himself, why wouldn’t he send a few heart-shaped herbs to some of the spies in countries across the world? Namely countries that have Captain Americas running around? 4. He killed a member of the Dora Milaje, slicing her throat when mere incapacitation was enough. Two minutes later he cut Nakia in the leg and then tried to kill Shuri before T’Challa stopped him. 5. He fought T’Challa again and died. So in the five scenes in which Killmonger fought someone, he left two black women dead, one choked out, another one injured and another within a few inches of getting killed. Killmonger didn’t care about black women in his quest for liberation. He wasn’t a revolutionary, because no true revolutionary can possibly think black freedom is possible without all black people also being freed. He never showed any regard for black women at any moment in the film. Killmonger wasn’t a savior. He was Chris Brown with military training. But I’m not surprised that so many people ignored his treatment of black women to crown him our new lord and savior. We live in a world where making a song we can two-step to is grounds for society forgiving how many black women get hurt along the way. Seriously, I was at a party this weekend where a DJ played “Step In The Name Of Love.” In 2018. It’s just absurd how many people left Black Panther screaming about the strong portrayals of the black women in the film while cheering for someone who beat up literally every one of those women. That’s because abusing black women isn’t ever a non-starter for us. Instead our conversations revolve around how much abuse towards black women we’re willing to accept before we finally “cancel” someone. Misogyny can’t be the few cracked eggs we will accept to make our chicken anymore. Abuse can’t be the spilled milk it’s always been. Killmonger should have been seen as a villain the moment he put his hands on a woman. If I had to choose between T’Challa and Killmonger, I’d choose the former. He surrounded himself with black women from the beginning and listened and revered them. But really, if we’re keeping it a buck, Nakia was the one who was right all along any damn way.

Exclusive: “To Rome For Love’s” Ashley Russell Said She Went On Show After Footballer Fiancee Cheated

“To Rome For Love” Premieres Jan. 7 On Bravo One of the stars of a new reality show about black women seeking love internationally said she decided to go abroad after ending a toxic relationship with her pro footballer fiancee. “I wanted to be part of this experience because dating, it’s changed. It’s changed a lot,” Ashley Russell said of her new show “To Rome For Love.” “I’m from a small town, and I grew up in a single parent home. Everybody here knows everybody. I wanted to go outside the norm and experience something different.” Russell is among a group of black women on “To Rome For Love,” who have struck out in America’s dating culture and opted to spend six weeks in Rome to explore relationships with Italian men. The Covington, La. native said that after her nine-year relationship with her pro-football playing fiancee ended because of his infidelity, she didn’t have anything to lose. “I fell in love with a man who was very powerful,” Russell said. “So I was always in the back…I was second to his career. I was never secure about myself. It was hard coming from this relationship and trusting that I could find love again.” While Russell was coy on whether she’d found her own “Italian Stallion,” she did say that she had no shortage of admirers and said her time with the show’s relationship expert Diane Valentine, changed how she saw herself. Bravo Media/ Philippe Antonello/ Ernesto Ruscio “Diane made me realize that I was enough,” Russell said. “It’s all about the person that’s inside. It had nothing to do with what I looked like. For a long time, I thought it was about the outer appearance. I thought that would help me find a man. She helped me realize that I’m an amazing woman with a lot to offer.” Russell said that she hopes viewers – and especially black women – will take away from the show that all love starts from within. “I just want them to keep their minds open about the process,” Russell said. “And as black women, I want us to remember that whether it’s Rome, whether it’s Tennessee, or whether its Louisiana, you have to love yourself. For people to love you, you have to accept yourself.”

Naps Matter: Study Shows Black People Have A Bias Against Black Natural Hair

New Study Shows That Black People Have Bias Against Black Hair Do you love your natural hair ? A new study claims that all people, including black folks, hold an implicit bias against the types and styles of natural hair worn by black people. According to NPR , The “Good Hair Study” was conducted by Perception Institute , known within the research community as “a consortium of researchers, advocates and strategists” that uses emotional and psychological research to identify and reduce bias in areas such as law enforcement, education, civil justice and the workplace. The hair study resulted from a partnership with Shea Moisture to better understand the link of implicit and black textured coils. Researchers asked over 4,000 participants to take an online test, which involved rapidly-changing pictures of black women with permed hair then black women with more natural hair. The study showed that most people, including blacks, have an implicit bias towards women of color based on their hair. But the results of the test show that the bias can be unlearned. Some key findings confirm that black women suffer more anxiety around hair issues, and spend more on hair care than their white peers. They are almost twice as likely to experience social pressure at work to straighten their hair compared to white women. The study also concludes that “White women demonstrate the strongest bias — both explicit and implicit — against textured hair.” They rated it as “less beautiful,” “less sexy/attractive” and “less professional than smooth hair.” However, white women who are in contact with black women naturalistas demonstrated lower levels of bias. Given that white women make up a large majority of the 38 percent of female managers who decide what looks are appropriate for work, legal conflicts sometimes ensue. What do you think of the study? Do you have a bias against black hair?
