Pharrell Williams Had A Message For Certain White People At The ‘Hip Hop Honors’

See the article here:

Source: Emma McIntyre / Getty Pharrell had a lot to say on VH1’s most recent Hip Hop Honors . This year’s show honored the game changers of the 90s and Pharrell was set to introduce legendary music video director Hype Williams . However, Skateboard P took the time to call out an alarming issue — racism. “Everybody at home right now watching this, and acting like ya’ll don’t see what’s going on out there. Ya’ll got to open your eyes,” Pharrell started. “You keep saying you don’t see what’s going on on television, what’s happening to us. Open your eyes. And if you look like I look, then you know how we got here. But we’re here, and we’re not leaving. So what are we going to do?”   Pharrell then went on to address a particular group — probably a certain population of White people — and warned them that folks in power don’t have their best interest at heart. “Don’t think because they’re coming at the African-Americans and the Jewish community and the Hispanics that it can’t be you too just cause you look like them. They’re using you,” Pharrell said. He continued, “You should understand ’they’ can change their minds and it might not be about Black, White, big, skinny or small. It could be about facial features. It might be about hair color. Don’t act like they didn’t do that before.” Skateboard P ended by apologizing for taking up time with politics, but he felt like it was important to say something: “This is where we are right now. Me, I’m just a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, little musician. Like little small, tiny musician, but I’m African American. African means that’s what’s in me, American means thats where I am right now. So if this is where I am and this is America, it’s for liberty and justice for all.” You can watch Pharrell’s words for yourself below.

Here’s How Iggy Azalea Went From Potential Star To Past Tense

The rest is here:

Source: Scott Legato / Getty Iggy Azalea ‘s career could be likened to a celestial comet: nice to look at, only comes around every years and if you blink, you could miss it. Back in  2010, when Nicki Minaj was starting her tenure as reigning queen of rap, all anyone could talk about was he Australian-bred rapper being the hottest thing to hit hip hop in a long time. The fact that she’s not American and White added to her appeal, but what lead to her demise? Jezebel recently did an article entitled “The Making and Unmaking of Iggy Azalea” and touched on important points in her career that were pivotal to her success. The article points out that Polow Da Don was interested in Iggy ever since he met her in Atlanta in 2010 when she was just dropping mixtapes. The producer said of his first encounter with Iggy, “She just looked exotic. She looked like a star. If she was in entertainment, I wanted to work with her. If she wasn’t, I wanted to talk to her, try to take her out on a date or something.” Source: Kevin Mazur/AMA2014 / Getty After bouncing around from mentor to mentor, who tried to make her go pop, Polow says, “I told her, ‘Nobody’s gonna buy you being hood.’” Due to their creative differences, Iggy and Polow parted ways — then she moved on to another Atlanta great, T.I. Before officially working with Grand Hustle, Iggy continued to grind her way to hit records, and finally landed one by the end of 2014. “Fancy” set the charts on fire and became 2015’s summer anthem. From there, she took her talents to features and hopped on tracks with everyone from Ariana Grande to Britney Spea r s . She was basically the pop world’s go to rapper at the time. Iggy was so popular that she even landed a modeling contract with Wilhelmina. Then, according to Jezebel, “Iggy became a punchline and went from being hailed as a white rap savior to, three years later, being a digital-era Vanilla Ice.” Her social media beefs with everyone from Azelia Banks to Q-Tip, plus her tumultuous relationship with Nick Young, started to overshadow the music. In a June interview with The Guardian, singer Halsey , who is also White, summarized Iggy’s career in a nutshell, saying “She had a complete disregard for Black culture. F***ing moron. I watched her career dissolve and it fascinated me.” Halsey isn’t the only one who noticed her disregard for the culture, hip hop as a whole was demanding for her to stop mocking the art of hip hop. Last year and 2017 were ice-cold years for Iggy professionally, but her personal life has overshadowed her music — hence the reason she posted more about her five-minute long relationship with French Montana   than she did her sophomore album. Maybe 2018 will see the rebirth of Iggy Iggs on the music charts? Check out the full Jezebel article here . [ione_media_gallery src=”https://globalgrind.cassiuslife.com” id=”4015610″ overlay=”true”]

Widespread Power Outages In Metro Atlanta

More here:

Widespread power outages in metro Atlanta Source: Hemera Technologies / Getty Not only are homes in the dark because of the widespread power outages, but many traffic lights at intersections are out too and that’s leading to an increase number of accidents.  Police say when you come to an intersection where the traffic light is not working, treat it like a four-way stop, that means everybody stops and the cars that get to the traffic light first, go first.  That also goes for an intersection with flashing red lights.

Black Lives Matter Movement Lands A TV Series On AMC

Read the original here:

Source: Pacific Press / Getty 2017 has been the year of television telling stories about what’s happening in the world today. The latest hot topic to snag a series based on issues plaguing the nation is the Black Lives Matter movement. According to Deadline , AMC is developing a yet-to-be-named drama series that will focus on the movement, which protests police brutality and the poor treatment of Black people in America. The new show will be based on Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery ’s bestselling nonfiction book They Can’t Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America’s Racial Justice.  The book, which was published by Little, Brown & Company in 2016, gives an in-depth look at how decades of racially biased policing in segregated neighborhoods, sub par schools, crumbling infrastructures, and scarcity of jobs, ultimately led to the explosive police brutality cases in Ferguson (Mike Brown), Cleveland (Tamir Rice), Baltimore (Freddie Gray)  and the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. But just like any other crusade in which Black people try to liberate themselves from oppression, BLM has been deemed a dangerous terrorist group by people like Donald Trump and those who support him. Thanks AMC for taking a risk to tell a story that has yet to be told. Will you be watching? [ione_media_gallery src=”https://globalgrind.cassiuslife.com” id=”4186970″ overlay=”true”]

Airline Ticket Price Hikes Criticized As Exploiting Hurricane Evacuees

Read this article:

W ith the powerful winds of Hurricane Irma approaching Florida, some airlines are hiking ticket prices well beyond the budget of many seeking to escape the destructive storm,  CBS News reports. The outlet interviewed a Vermont man, Steve McQueen , who said he spent  $1,725 to fly his 87-year-old mother from Fort Myers, Florida to Charlotte, North Carolina on Thursday. He told CBS that he understands what happens with last minute ticket purchases but called the price “ghastly.”  Delta Airlines was publicly shamed when a prospective customer tweeted a price change  from $547.50 to $3,258.50 found on Expedia.com,  NBC News reported. Since that post went viral, others reported United Airlines and American Airlines for similar price hikes. Shame on you @delta . Jacking from $547 to over $3200 for people trying to evacute responsibly? #IrmaHurricane pic.twitter.com/O2nfPHQUAh — Leigh (@LeighDow) September 5, 2017 According to CBS, price gouging related to emergencies is illegal in Florida. That rule applies to hotels, gas stations and grocery stores–but not airlines. The federal government is responsible for regulating the airline industry. Exorbitant pricing complicates evacuation arrangements for students like Antonio Mercurius , an African American studies and health science major at the University of Miami. Mercurius told the  Miami Herald he felt “lucky” to have purchased his flight to the District of Columbia on Monday, before the hikes. The co-founder of the student poetry collective Speak How You Feel told reporters he was concerned about the safety of others who can’t afford the increased prices:  “Why is there no emergency evacuation cost? I understand supply and demand but the laws of capitalism should not operate in the times of catastrophic danger. What happens to the people that can’t afford flights now?” After public outrage over the “laws of capitalism,” some airlines began to change their tunes and prices. JetBlue set a $99 cap for direct flights out of Florida. American Airlines set a similar cap for outgoing flights. A spokesperson for Delta Airlines announced that it would adjust prices for last-minute flights, waive change fees, and accommodate more passengers with larger planes. Ta-Nehisi Coates’ New Piece Lays Out Precisely Why Trump Is Destroying Obama’s Legacy

W ith efforts to take down Obamacare   and decisions to cancel DACA ,  it’s no secret that 45 is trying to take down anything productive from the Obama administration. But no one has considered how whiteness and the dismantling of Black excellence plays into this. In a compelling piece for   The Atlantic , journalist and cultural critic  Ta-Nehisi Coates illustrated precisely how (and why) Donald Trump is creating his legacy by negating everything that Obama stood for. “For Trump, it almost seems that the fact of Obama, the fact of a black president, insulted him personally ,” he writes. “ Replacing Obama is not enough—Trump has made the negation of Obama’s legacy the foundation of his own. And this too is whiteness .” You can check out the piece at The Atlantic  here .
