Source: Piotr Marcinski / EyeEm / Getty We See You: White Woman Designer Is Getting Dragged For Gentrifying Sleep Bonnets A White designer named Sarah Marantz started her own sleep bonnet company called NiteCap , and is more or less crediting herself for inventing sleep bonnets altogether. In an interview with Fashion Magazine , she claims her “concept” was developed out of necessity because she had seen NOTHING like it before. Is she serious?! My concept came out of a problem that needed solving. I was preparing for my wedding and, like a lot of brides, wanted everything to be perfect. I went through tons of different patterns and samples and tests, and it actually took me a lot longer than I would have liked. I wanted something that was adjustable so I met with and interviewed women who wrap their hair. I wanted something that would accommodate long and short hair, that was going to be aesthetically pleasing and made of beautiful materials, and that would merchandise with all of your products on a nightstand. Really? Here is what Sarah came up with after doing TONS of ‘research’ and ‘designing’. This sleep bonnet retails for a mere $98. View this post on Instagram @evanne_c_ in her NiteCap A post shared by NiteCap (@nitecapco) on Apr 21, 2019 at 11:44am PDT The article discussing Marantz’ suppose innovation has not used the word “invention” but instead says “she came up with” it. Black folks began dragging the website AND the designer for even having the AUDACITY for crediting her for creating sleep bonnets. They’ve also added this half-assed editor’s note: ( Editor’s note: Though not strictly used just for sleeping, the item has a long history in black hair culture. ) not a white lady pretending she invented sleep bonnets and selling them for $100 https://t.co/DYxZNILJCE — vampire workday (@imbobswaget) July 20, 2019 Hit the flip to see how else Black folks are dragging “NiteCap” for their gentrified sleep bonnets. What do YOU think of all of this?
They call her the African Kim Kardashian….and I can see why. She looks exactly like Kim Kardashian looks to me, only with more substance and authenticity because she’s actually AFRICAN and not just culture vulturing. Seriously, Kim K was raised white as fuck by her white mom and has barely got dark skin naturally. Source: Stephanie Long / Courtesy of Stephanie Long Short hairstyles on women are nothing new, whether it’s Halle Berry or Lupita Nyong’o , Black women are prime examples that we can rock styles at any length. Bria Myles recently traded in long hair for a bald do and it had us thinking about getting a cropped cut! We caught up with CASSIUS Editor, Stephanie Long , who has been rocking a short haircut for about almost a year now. However, this isn’t the first time she’s had short hair. She explained, “In 2009, back when I was still relaxing my hair, I had cut it pretty short a’ la Rihanna in the ‘Take a Bow’ video. Before that, I had the ‘Umbrella’ bob.” Long is one to experiment with her hair and after having “locs for a hot second in 2017 and not really feeling it,” she was “ready to take the plunge.” The change in her tresses led her to feel like she really came into herself and she “felt so beautiful.” She added it was “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself.” Yes, it’s true, short hair is easier to manage. Stephanie shared her routine with Hello Beautiful , “I’m able to just get up in the morning, shower, throw on a cute outfit with some brows and a bold lip and I’m out the door.” She relishes in the thought, “No more wash days, no more pineappling my hair to preserve a twistout, no more hiding from rain or humidity.” If there is one difficult moment, she explained it’s the “awkward stage between really needing a cut and actually getting one is a bit annoying.” Nevertheless, even in her “rough” moments, she still gets tons of compliments on her look. Source: Stephanie Long / Courtesy of Stephanie Long And we can see why! With these fun cuts and ease of being able to switch it up, her cropped cuts are anything but boring. She found a great barber through trial and error, “I did my googles, tried one barber that was okay but that I wasn’t fully satisfied with. Then I kept looking online and eventually found the one I’ve been going to since late September 2018.” For New York girls, she shared the wealth, “His name is Tim Lord and he’s at Adrian Fanus Grooming in Bed-Stuy! I recommend him to any and ALL ladies looking to go low.” Source: Stephanie Long / Courtesy of Stephanie Long While intricate, the hairstyles are easy to maintain, with you needing a cut about once a month. “If I can’t make it that often, I turn to cute caps and head wraps. No biggie.” For maintenance, she sleeps with a satin pillow case or scarf or durag to protect her scalp and hair. She shared, “Shampoo, conditioner and a little bit of oil (I do a mixture of coconut, camellia and brazil nut) is also still very much a thing for me, especially when I’m rocking my little 4C curls.” We love Stephanie’s short haircut! All children are a blessing. We’re not here to argue this point. But some men and women are simply incompatible and, yes, even dangerous together and they really should not share any kids. Yes, we’re looking at you when making this statement, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Jen Harley. The on-again/off-again/on-again/off-again/holy-crap-are-they-really-on-again?!? couple is already parents to an adorable daughter named Ariana. She was born in April of 2018 and her parents have spent every other week since fighting, arguing and alleging that the other assaulting him or her. We’re barely even exaggerating here. And yet… Ronnie just admitted that he and Harley remain a couple and MTV viewers watched in shock on Thursday night when Ronnie dropped a different kind of bombshell: He said Harley might be pregnant again. On the latest installment of this revived reality series, the group took a trip to Lake George, New York in order to help Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino get his mind off his recent jail sentencing. And this mission was quickly accomplished once everyone was sitting around a bonfire and Ronnie said his sperm may have fertilized Jen’s egg for the second time. “You might be pregnant?” replied Jenni “JWOWW” Farley. “Shut the f-ck up. Ronaldo, are you serious?” “Maybe,” he responded. “She’s late. … She wants to take [a pregnancy test] now, but I told her to wait. I want to be there when she does it.” “My mind is blown right now,” Mike confessed. Vinny Guadagnino, meamwhile, won the night with the best reaction, offering his friend some life advice while also asking the question on everyone’s minds: Pull the f-ck out. What the f-ck is wrong with you? Ronnie didn’t let these responses get him down, however. Yes, he and Jen have had their problems — and then some. It was only a few months ago that Ronnie claimed Jen assaulted him with an ashtray and Jen claimed Ronnie ransacked her Las Vegas apartment. However, “I love being a father,” he said on air last night, adding of the possibility that Harley is expecting again: “I mean, I did it once. Second time will be the same thing, if not better.” Continued the muscular veteran MTV personality: “I’m excited about it, you know. “I would rather have another child with Jen than have another child with another woman. Why would I want to have three baby moms? It’s like, let’s have kids, get one baby’s mom, and that’s what it is.” In their interviews with producers, though, other cast members weren’t quite so optimistic about the situation. Remember, they think Jen totally sucks . “It’s definitely crazy to think Jen’s pregnant again, because we just never know where they are in their relationship – if they’re happy, if they’re fighting, if she’s dragging him with a car,” said Snooki. “I just want them to be good before they bring another baby into the world.” Farley echoed this sentiment: “I feel like they need about five years of therapy before another child. It’s my opinion, I’m allowed to have it. But apparently, they’re fine. As he’s sitting there with another black eye.” And Pauly D? Let’s have your thoughts… “Like, what the f-ck, dude? You haven’t learned yet? “Their relationship is a roller coaster. The last thing they need to do is have another baby. Ron says he’s fine with it, but we all know it’s only a matter of time before he falls apart.” Watch Jersey Shore: Family Vacation Season 3 Episode 2 Online Ronnie did check into rehab earlier this year for alcoholism and depression. This either means he’s at a healthier place than ever before… or that Harley drove him to seek professional help and his pals are right, she’s a very bad influence on him. In the end, the question of Jen’s pregnancy was not resolved on the episode. But it was filmed months ago and there’s been no talk of her being with child since, so it’s safe to assume this was a false, very scary alarm. After all, Ortiz-Magro talked to Us Weekly just a few days ago and said his relationship with Jen is actually great, never bringing up an impending baby. “Things are good and I think it’s because I made a change and I stopped doing the same thing over and over again,” he told this tabloid, concluding: “I started just focusing on myself and stopped worrying about what other people wanted from me, and what I want for myself. So right now things are good.” View Slideshow: Ronnie Ortiz-Magro Reveals Rehab Stint, Admits Hitting Rock Bottom

Source: Huggies / Huggies It looks like Huggies is making some history for itself. On July 8, the pampers powerhouse debuted new packaging for its “Special Delivery” diapers, boasting a beautiful Black father, a first of its kind in the company’s 41-year-old history. It’s also part of a larger campaign that showcased other dads (and moms) as well. One of the fathers modeling for the Daddy-friendly packaging box is Chicago-native Orlando Thompson and his 3-year-old daughter Soraya Lattimore. Thompson told USA Today that he is honored to be part of a push to change the way we look at our fatherhood. “There’s a stereotype that’s out there that dads in general, not just a particular race, are not connected to their kids and not affectionate,” Thompson stressed, adding, “This should have been displaced a long time ago.” So why now for this much-needed representation? “We really believe in celebrating all parents and the great job that parents are doing,” Huggies North America brand director Kristine Rhode recently told USA Today. She added, “When you think about the important role that dads have in the family today and how that continues to grow, we wanted to make sure they were equally celebrated.” Source: Huggies / Huggies We absolutely love these images, especially given the negative stereotypes about African-American fathers that persist in society. It’s empowering to see our fathers being the amazing caretakers we know them to be. Naturally, we’re not the only ones praising this Huggies campaign. Social media celebrated it as well: This is the first black father and child to represent Huggies Their names to me is unknown. pic.twitter.com/b0toN4Tbh0 —
Source: Prince Williams / Getty Shannon Brown Speaks On Monica Divorce Shannon Brown gave a rare comment this week on his personal life. The basketball star/estranged husband of Monica Brown appeared on “ Sister Circle TV” Tuesday to speak on his career as a baller and his current status playing in Ice Cube’s Big3 league. He also spoke on his foundation and his Skills Summit Camp that’s based around health awareness for local kids—but things got especially interesting when host Rashan Ali mentioned that he was “going through a lot” in his personal life. According to Shannon, however, that’s simply untrue. He’s doing juuuust fine despite Monica filing for divorce in March. “I haven’t been going through a lot of nothing,” said Shannon. “A lot of people take stories they hear and they blow it up for entertainment purposes but I’ve learned how to ignore the negativity and keep pushing forward. I think a lot of people got the same idea, they see me and say, “Are you okay?!” I’m fine. What’s wrong?” Oh? Both Monica and Shannon have remained mostly quiet about what caused their split, but Monica recently said on the “RuPaul Show ” that it was NOT infidelity. “Even though I’m on reality TV, there’s certain parts and elements of it that I’ve never discussed because when you get married, it is between the two of you and whatever happens within it, it’s us and God,” said Monica to RuPaul. “No matter what happens, he will always get my absolute respect, gratitude and also my assistance in being a part of whatever his life becomes … I’ll be there to support because that’s what I vowed to do, even when the other side of it does not work.” Luckily, for us, it wasn’t another person that was the issue but in the times that I’ve experienced that, I definitely act out very harshly,” she said. “So that part of the growth has been good. Me being hurt repeatedly allowed me to say, ‘Okay, how do you deal with hurt?’” We wish them the best. 13:05

Source: Peter Forest/Getty Images for OWN Bossip Be Trippin: Essence Fest 25 Hey beautiful people, it’s your wanderlusty buddy-pal Alejandro with another White Diamond-splashed Essence Fest adventure to recap. And yes, there are taupe kitten heels, bedazzled bodysuits, snazzy toe rings, stretchy floral fabrics, young aunties in polka dot hot pants and big Bluetooth energy (courtesy of Pop-Pop Frankie Beverly) sprinkled into this journey. Sounds amazing, I know, so let’s get into it. But first–I have to thank Ford for loaning me a 2019 Ford F-150 Limited (basically an Autobot) for the trip. I’ll call him Optimus Jr. and he’s simply incredible with the best fuel mileage of any new-age truck. I drove from Atlanta to NOLA (470 miles) without stopping for gas and STILL had 100 miles left to E. It’s absolutely life-changing (if you have an older vehicle like myself) with a planet-shaking sound system, dependable navigation interface, spacious interior (sooo much backseat space for luggage unlike most pickup trucks), MOONROOF, self-parallel parking (yes, you read that right) and buttery smooth leather seats. Source: Alex Ford/iOne This isn’t a commercial (I promise) but I told them I would let yall know how impressive the F-150 is. My only (small) complaint is the $69 is takes to fill up. STRESSFUL. But yea, I’m a fan and recommend you take one for a spin someday. Now, back to Essence Fest that attracted 1.7 billion people (I counted) to the (not) Big (enough) Easy this year for some good ‘ole fashioned day drinking shenanigans in wig-melting, eyebrow-sizzling heat. At one point, it was 104° outside but that didn’t stop anyone from attending an impressive array of events and brunches and lunches and dinners and pop-ups and soirées and kickbacks and meet & greets this year. A Texas-based historically Black college is ensuring that all of its students have the support and resources needed to overcome trauma developed from past experiences. According to Dallas News , Paul Quinn College has launched a mental health campaign to help students address internal obstacles so they can thrive academically. Paul Quinn College is taking a progressive approach to mental health that leaves no student behind. #StudentHealth #News https://t.co/BOuhKi2O84 — The Fix (@_TheFix) July 10, 2019 At one point the school had one of the lowest graduation rates in the country and that prompted faculty members to get to the root of the issue. With the help of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, they discovered that the core of the problem was trauma and many of the students were suffering from PTSD. Students were carrying the emotional burdens of tragic past experiences from their upbringings and environments and some were carrying the weight of being first-generation college students on their shoulders. “We thought we were doing good,” said Paul Quinn College president Michael Sorrell . “‘We’re bringing you out of that environment and you’ll be safe. And life will be great.’ … It took us a while to understand that that was a product of trauma.” With a grant given to the school by Gov. Greg Abbott , the institution has been able to launch several programs and initiatives under its campaign. Incoming freshman and transfer students have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a counselor and the school has an on-campus mental health center which is overseen by Dr. Stacia’ Alexander . The center is decorated with images of celebrities who have been transparent about their struggles with mental health so that the students can see themselves reflected. “The thing we’re trying to get students to understand is that those traumas are real,” Dr. Alexander told the news outlet. “And they do impair or affect how you process daily information. And if you continue to ignore that, you’re going to continue to be impaired and not reach your full potential.” In addition to the counseling, there are several wellness and fitness activities that take place on campus. Initiatives like the one being led at Paul Quinn College are needed. Studies show that over 20 percent of incoming college students have battled with mental health disorders. SEE ALSO: Taraji P.
