Taraji P. Henson Unveils Her Natural Hair, Reveals Plans To Launch Haircare Brand [PHOTO]

See the original post:

Source: Gilbert Carrasquillo / Getty Just two years ago, Taraji P. Henson debuted a new, short and chic ‘do . She chopped her hair off in June of 2017 and said she wouldn’t be putting anymore unnecessary heat on it: “ I’m not straightening my hair again .” Soon after though, she put the short cut away and opted for an array of protective styles, from braids to detachable ponytails and wigs. Just yesterday, she showed off the results of all her protective efforts, sharing an image of the current state of her natural hair. We must say, it’s grown considerably since we last saw it. A post shared by taraji p henson (@tarajiphenson) on Jul 10, 2019 at 3:54pm PDT   After seeing her hair now at bob length in such a short time, we were thirsty for her secret. Aside from money, a good stylist, and likely genetics, it’s probably good products. Thankfully, we’re going to be able to get our hands on the types of products that work for her, because the 48-year-old revealed that she’ll soon be launching a hair care line. “I can’t wait to share my hair care system with you,” she wrote. “#TPHBeauty coming VERY SOON!!!” Her hair has come a mighty long way. Taraji chose to give her hair natural hair a chance to be free from processing and straightening and the impact has not only been on the length of her strands, but the way she sees her crown. “[Black women] have shame when it comes to our hair,” she told the Huffington Post soon after cutting her hair off. “What we’ve been told, ‘Your hair is nappy.’ It’s not nappy, it’s curly. That’s a curl, that’s a coil. That’s energy leading up and I was like, we need to convey that message because I see a lot of girls, natural, is it for fashion or do you really understand what that is? It is a crown that God gave you. Our hair defies gravity without any products. Do you know how powerful that is? That’s powerful.” Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Candy’s Death On ‘Pose’ Embodies The Dreams Deferred Of All The Black Trans Women We’ve Lost

Read this article:

Source: Pose / FX Networks WARNING: Major spoilers ahead for episode 4 of “Pose:” If it felt that in the second season of Pose Candy Ferocity ( Angelica Ross ) was growing and developing into something bigger and better, you were not alone. While in the hit ballroom drama, Candy has always struggled, especially with choosing the correct category, she’d come a long way. Yes, she is still a mean girl who can read the girls and even threaten folks with that infamous hammer of hers, but she’s evolved a bit. She’s no longer the girl having strangers in basements inject faulty silicon in her rear, nor is she tagging behind former house mother Elektra Abundance Evangelista Wintour ( Dominique Jackson ) feeding off her scraps. Ms. Candy—as Pray Tell ( Billy Porter ) would say—had stepped up to become a co-mother, molding her own children and house, along with doing her damnedest to carve out her own lasting legacy. And as we jumped three years later to 1990 this season, we see how the girls—rather naively and annoyingly—have faith that Madonna’s hit song “Vogue” would bring them all from the shadows of this underground world into the  bright lights of the Big Apple. As Candy said, she needed to the first one in the line of that mainstream gaze, because she has bigger dreams than winning trophies in the face category. She was destined to become a star in the outside world. She was looking to the future. Source: Pose / FX Networks Of course, we all wanted that for her, to see her rise and be successful like Angel (Indya Moore ), but in the fourth episode “ Never Knew Love Like This Before,” we realize that Candy “is never coming home.” Days after she’d gone missing, her bruised and bloody body was found, thrown in a seedy hotel closet like yesterday’s trash. See, Candy had to engage in survival sex work to keep her house afloat, but this time around, the danger too many vulnerable women like her face is what ended her life. Granted, it’s not like death is new to Pose . But the majority of those deaths have been from complications of AIDS, mostly taking the lives of Black and Latinx men. Meanwhile, many of the girls (outside of Blanca) seemed unscathed by the virus on-screen. But as Angelica Ross recently told me this season co-creator Ryan Murphy was clear that this season they would no longer be viewing these women’s world through “rose colored glasses.” But thankfully, her death wasn’t treated like an afterthought like Tara from True Blood or with blatant disregard like Missandei on Game of Thrones). As I recently pointed out for Shondaland , Candy’s storyline was treated with “the love, dignity and respect it deserved.” During Candy’s memorial, her fierce-as-ever ghost appeared in order to make amends with frenemies like Pray Tell, encourage Angel to carry on her torch to the next generation of trans girls like her and to reunite with her estranged parents who had refused to see their son as the woman she was born to be. Most importantly, Candy was no longer the butt of the ball’s jokes. In her final scene, she was able to fulfill her biggest goal before crossing over: To be the queen of the ballroom in a category she knew she could conquer, lip-syncing. But it’s important to point out that this stunning (and triggering moment) in television was also an example of art imitating life. In the iconic 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning , which Pose is heavily inspired by, Venus Xtravaganza’  promising life was ended short when her body was found in a “sleazy motel” four days after she’d been strangled. Like Candy, her killer was never caught. One would think that with time comes progress, but for trans women, specifically Black and Latinx trans women like Candy and Venus, that isn’t always the case. Yes, they are more visible in pop culture, but being seen doesn’t translate into safety. Just this year alone, eleven Black trans women in the U.S. have been murdered : Dana Martin. Jazzaline Ware. Ashanti Carmon. Claire Legato. Muhlaysia Booker. Michelle “Tamika” Washington. Paris Cameron. Chynal Lindsey. Chanel Scurlock. Zoe Spears. Brooklyn Lindsey. What’s even worse is that it’s estimated that the average lifespan for trans women is only 35-years-old. Think if that were the case for cisgender Black women. Think if every year you inch closer to 35, you inch closer to death. Every time you blow out your birthday candles you are reminded of ALL the years, happiness and dreams that will be robbed from you because you are brave enough to live your truth. That’s the real tragedy. All that potential, just lost. All of the gifts they can offer and receive from this world, gone. This is exactly what Candy’s fictional death represents—the dreams deferred of the real-life Black trans women we’ve lost and will continue to lose to this senseless, transphobic and crippling violence. Sadly, it’s happening on our watch. So if there was ever a time to stand up for Black trans women, it’s now. Now is the time to love and support our sisters by fighting for a better and more welcoming world that allows for them to live their fullest and longest lives. We owe them that. Most importantly, now is the time to ensure that when we say the names of the Candys of this world, we’re not just doing it in death, but celebrating them in life. 10 Cringeworthy Scenes From 90’s Flicks That Wouldn’t Hold Up In Today’s Climate

Go here to see the original:

Source: Universal Pictures / Handout / Getty Ask anyone born before 2000, and they’ll agree that the 90’s was such a special time for everyone. Television was booming with Black talent and filmmakers like Spike Lee and John Singleton weren’t afraid to tell the raw truth about the issues plaguing the African American communities. The entertainment industry also had the creative license to do and say whatever they wanted no matter what demographic they offended — hence the reason we have films like American Pie . I miss the old raunchy movies they had out back in my day, like Freddy Got fingered, Road Trip, American Pie movie. Bring the classics back! pic.twitter.com/e61L4Af4WV — B1GPAT (@B1G_PAT) June 30, 2019 Today marks the 20th anniversary of American Pie , the raunchy 1999 comedy that follows four teenage boys (played by Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas) on a quest to lose their virginities before graduation. The movie was such a huge deal for young Americans when it hit theaters; but if watched by young adults today, they’d have a totally different reaction to some of those gruesome scenes. Like the scene when Jason Biggs’ character sets up his computer camera to record the foreign exchange student changing her clothes, without her consent. That’s a sexual crime lawsuit waiting to happen. With so many powerful, life changing movements shifting the climate today , (and a culture of people being offended by the smallest thing) there’s not much room to express oneself fully without offending someone. Obviously, we all need to be a bit more mindful of the content we put out, but hit the flip to check out scenes from films that just wouldn’t fly today.

Wendy Williams: I’m Dating a Hot, Black Doctor!

Wendy Williams is back on the air. But she is officially off the market. The talk show host made that very clear on Monday morning, discussing her very own love life as part of her Hot Topics segment. “I’m not on the market anymore,” Williams revealed close to the opening of her first new episode in five weeks. The 54-year old then grew both giddy and emotional as she spoke to her studio audience. “I’m not in love. I’m not in love … but there’s somebody that I’m crazy about,” she added. This object of Wendy’s affection is NOT the young boy toy and ex-convict with whom she had previously been linked, either. “Listen, it’s not who you think,” Williams went on to say, addressing chatter about her relationship with 27-year-old Marc Tomblin. “OK, mother doesn’t deal with children.” Fair enough. Who does she deal with in that case? “It just so happens that, I guess with my charm and wit, I attract people of all ages,” she continue. “Whether you are 90…but if you are cool, you’re my friend. If you are 27, like my new friend Mark…he’s from L.A., he came to New York, he’d never been to New York before.” This was Wendy’s rambling way of saying she’s a “hand holder” — and that, yes, she was spotted holding hands with this Mark person . But the two are definitely not an item. While 27-year-old guys do find her “very attractive,” Williams was not too shy to admit, when it comes time for the comfort of a man, the television personality said she needs “somebody in his 50s too.” “And he’s gotta work. It helps that he’s a doctor,” Williams added to raucous applause, concluding of her relatively new boyfriend: “I am not gonna say one more word, you’re not gonna blow this for me. But he’s been married, his kids are in their 20s and yes, he’s black.” Williams said she would name the guy just yet, but made a point to emphasize that he’s in terrific shape. During her first episode back, Williams also addressed a headline from the Globe saying Williams was getting “sweet revenge as $50 million divorce turns ugly.” (Wendy finally filed to divorce Kevin Hunter several weeks ago, following years of him cheating on her and even welcoming a baby with his long-time mistress.) While she didn’t bring up her estranged awful husband by name, Williams did feel a need to mention the aforementioned article and headline. “When I saw this [headline], I almost passed out right there. I bought all of them at the airport. Listen, my family is doing fine and I am doing fine.” We actually are happy to hear that. Because although we find Williams to have a grating personality and a very irritating TV persona… and while we wish she’d stop trashing other celebrities and speculating on their lives just garner herself attention and ratings… Hunter very clearly sucks. No person deserves to be treated the way he had been treating her. View Slideshow: 19 Times Wendy Williams Has Totally Sucked as a Person

Attorney For White Man Who Killed Elijah El-Amin Over Rap Music Argues ‘This Is A Disabled Person’

Read this article:

E lijah Al-Amin was a 17-year-old who was fatally stabbed by 27-year-old Michael Paul Adams. The child was killed all because he was listening to hip hop music. Now, the attorney for Adams is using the excuse that he was “disabled.” See Also: Outrageous! Figurines Of White Cherub Crushing Head Of Black Angel Removed From Dollar Store His attorney Jacie Cotterell told Good Evening Arizona , “This is a disabled person and he’s been released into the world and left to fend for himself, two days later — this is where we are.” She claims the department of corrections failed “Elijah with no resources or psychiatric help even though he had a past of severe mental illness.” However, being disabled or mentally ill does not make you a white supremacist. Court records say that Adams admitted he killed the 17-year-old because rap music made him feel “unsafe” and he was being “proactive, not reactive” but killing the chid. He believed rap was a threat to himself and his community. On Thursday, July 4, Al-Amin got off work from Subway around 11:30 p.m. and visited his girlfriend. While at a a gas station in Peoria, Arizona, he was stabbed by Adams around 1:45 a.m. He was about to turn 18 in less than two weeks Elijah’s father told KVOU, “2 o’clock came, 3 o’clock came, 4 o’clock came, I kept calling, calling,  calling, texting, texting, texting, and I wasn’t getting a response. I just had a feeling that something wasn’t right.” He continued, “ You took a helluva kid… He was a good kid, very good kid, always willing to help kids, help people in general.” Michael Adams was booked on a first-degree murder charge. Watch his father below: The mentally ill excuse for white people who kill Black people is an ongoing theme. In July of 2018, 18-year-old Nia Wilson was killed by James Cowell. Shortly after the tragedy, his family released a statement with the  “mentally ill” excuse. The statement read in part, “John has been suffering from mental illness most of his life. He has been in & out of Jail & has not had the proper treatment.” As of April , Cowell’s criminal case has been suspended to evaluate his mental competency. We hope Elijah Al-Amin gets justice. John Legend, Issa Rae And Others Support Crowdfunding Campaign To Restore Nina Simone’s Childhood Home

Read the original:

O ver a year ago the National Trust for Historic Preservation declared late legendary songstress Nina Simone ’s childhood home a national treasure. Individuals in the entertainment industry have joined forces to support a campaign that would make the restoration and preservation of the North Carolina-based house a reality. @johnlegend , @YusufCatStevens , and More Come Together to Help Preserve Nina Simone's Legacy #TelltheFullHistory https://t.co/eK1YlGclD3 — Saving Places (@SavingPlaces) July 1, 2019 The crowdfunding campaign—which launched on July 1—is being run on IndieGoGo . Through the campaign, supporters can purchase shirts, postcards, pins and other Nina Simone-inspired items designed by Black artist Dare Coulter. They can also purchase items donated by Issa Rae , Talib Kweli , and Mahershala Ali . Singer John Legend has been instrumental in spreading awareness about the revitalization of Simone’s home. “Spaces devoted to the history and legacy of people of color, especially women of color, are far too few in America today,” he said in a statement. “Preserving places like the Nina Simone childhood home will help keep her powerful story alive. This campaign pays tribute to Nina Simone’s unapologetic pursuit of musical, personal, and political freedom and I am proud to be a part of it.” The singer’s childhood home has been vacant for years. It was on the verge of being demolished until New York artists joined forces to purchase the home in 2017. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is developing a renovation plan through its African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. The organization has been working towards ensuring that historic Black sites that are embedded in the fabric of American history are preserved. Other preservation projects that are being worked on through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund include the restoration of playwright August Wilson ’s Pittsburgh home and a house in Long Island that belonged to John and Alice Coltrane . “The projects celebrate iconic figures, instill community pride, and also provide the opportunity to educate about them and their achievements for generations to come,” said Linda Wilson , Executive Director, Fund II Foundation. YG Clarifies That He Wasn’t Involved After His SUV Was In The Middle Of A Police Shootout

Source: Michael Wright/WENN.com / WENN YG’s SUV Involved In A Police Shootout In Los Angeles YG is making sure the world knows he had nothing to do with a high-speed chase through the streets of Los Angeles, even though it involved an SUV registered in his name. The Compton rapper told TMZ the following before tweeting out the same statement: “I was nowhere near the scene of this incident and had been in a recording studio all day in Hollywood. I was there until after midnight on the Fourth of July and didn’t learn of these events until after they happened.” The outlet’s sources say that YG is the registered owner of the black Cadillac Escalade that was involved in Wednesday night’s pursuit, which began with a deputy-involved shooting in Compton. The SUV had aftermarket bulletproof glass and armor. The Escalade is said to be a company car and like YG mentioned, he did not know the vehicle was being used at the time. According to police, they were initially called to apprehend a reckless DUI suspect, but detectives then responded to a deputy-involved shooting after an innocent bystander was caught in the crossfire and shot dead at the scene. Following the deadly shootout, a high-speed chase ensued and the pursuit finally came to an end in Inglewood.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says that more shots were fired during the chase, with suspects shooting at deputies and a Sheriff’s helicopter, which was not struck by bullets. One deputy was shot during the pursuit and suffered minor injuries from a gunshot wound, and he was treated and released. According to multiple reports, a patrol car’s windshield was peppered with bullets.  At least one person was detained, and another suspect remains outstanding. YG’s rep told TMZ that his attorneys have already been in contact with police. https://twitter.com/YG/status/1147237072748470273

2020 Election: Kamala Harris Takes A Bite Out Of Joe Biden’s Poll Lead After Busing Debate Criticism [Video]

Source: SplashNews / Splash News Kamala Harris Sees Major Bump In Polls After Biden Busing Criticism The Democratic debate last week helped create more distinction between the nearly two dozen names in the 2020 Presidential campaign hat. One of the biggest beneficiaries of that debate is Senator Kamala Harris who got a lot of air-time on cable news networks after she took a bite out of Joe Biden and his record on busing Black students to predominantly white schools. The race to the White House will be tense and likely very close, every little gain in the poll matters. Thoughts on Kamala Harris and her campaign up to this point?
