Atlanta-Based Business Owner Aims To Address Poverty Through Entrepreneurship

Continued here:

A Black business owner from Atlanta is aiming to help individuals combat poverty through entrepreneurship. Velma Trayham , the creator and CEO of the marketing agency ThinkZILLA PR & Consulting Group, has launched a new small business program to help those faced with financial setbacks start their own ventures, Black News reported. Trayham was inspired to create the Pioneer program after witnessing the impact of the recent government shutdown, the news outlet writes. After seeing people struggle to make ends meet, she was inspired to empower them and show them ways in which they can have control over their financial future by becoming entrepreneurs. Through the intensive program, participants will learn how to create everything from business models to marketing plans and other lessons needed to successfully grow a business. For Trayham it’s all about breaking the cycle of poverty. “Entrepreneurs can change the way they live and work – and inspire others to do the same. Innovations created by small businesses can improve the quality of life, creating personal success as well as create communities that are more prosperous,” she said in a statement. “When people find success doing something they love and believe in, they have the power and capacity to help others do the same. I appreciate the mentors who helped me early in my career and am dedicated to helping others find their passion in business, reduce the causes of poverty, and creating a chain effect of business support and success.” The program kicks off in Atlanta on March 30 and she plans on taking it to cities that include Washington, D.C., Houston, and Orlando. There has been an effort to support Black entrepreneurs. MVMT50 and The New Voices fund recently teamed up to host a pitch competition dubbed PITCH BLACK as an avenue to address the obstacles that Black women face when stepping into entrepreneurship, including the lack of access to capital. It wasn’t until Bell had a health setback in his adulthood when he decided to incorporate it into his daily life. Heavy smoking and drinking led Bell to have a serious heart condition which could have required him to wear a pacemaker. That’s when he knew that it was time to change his lifestyle for the better and started to practice yoga. Bell realized that there weren’t enough safe spaces for Black men to practice wellness and that’s when his yoga journey became bigger than himself. “Black men in particular were being isolated by the yoga community. We’re marketed as over-sexualized, hyper-violent, hyper-masculine,” said Bell. “I wanted to make a huge welcome sign that said, ‘You’re welcome here and come and heal.’” The Black Male Yoga Initiative has proven to be impactful. Many of the men who attend Bell’s sessions say that they have been life-changing. “Trauma is deeply intertwined in our existence. We get to express it here,” said one of the members. “Yoga brings balance. It puts everything I’ve ever went through into perspective.” There are several individuals who have been working towards creating safe spaces for Black wellness.  Last year, public health advocate Kevin Dedner launched a digital platform dubbed Henry Health as an avenue to empower Black men to take charge of their mental health. Is It Possible To ‘Separate The Art From The Artist?’ Critics Chime In…

Read this article:

Source: John Gunion / Getty The internet was in shambles back in January after Surviving R. Kelly aired. The famed singer has faced sexual misconduct accusations for more than two decades, but it was Lifetime’s 6-part doc that finally put the nail in his pied piper coffin—or so we pray. As several women came forward in the documentary to describe how they were controlled and abused by Kelly , fans and critics of the accused pedophile began arguing online about whether or not the world really needed to #MuteRKelly. Obviously, the answer is YES…but unreasonable stans argued they could “separate the art from the artist” …that the man has nothing to do with the music. How? Supporting the art literally puts money in the artist’s pocket. Not to mention, R. Kelly alluded to his abuse of young Black girls all throughout the music he wrote from himself and others. Now music lovers are having the same “art vs. artist” argument after watching Leaving Neverland , the agonizing documentary about the alleged abuse two boys faced at the hands of the late Michael Jackson . Should we mute MJ? Stevie Wonder doesn’t seem to think so… “He’s died, he’s dead. Hopefully, we can continue the legacy of inspiration he has given a lot of kids and a lot of people,” he told TMZ . Hit the flip to see what folks have had to say on the topic.

Sorry, Not Sorry Kylie Jenner: Here Are 5 ACTUAL Self-Made Billionaires Who Clawed Their Way From The Bottom To The Top

Read more here:

Tuesday morning, the publication that celebrates the world’s most business savvy people, announced Kylie Jenner, 21, was the youngest self-made billionaire, turning the internet on its head. This claim alone was incorrect, she’s not self-made, which dictionary.com , doing what it does best, defined the term for all of us. Haven't we gone over this? Self-made: Having succeeded in life unaided. https://t.co/g0ZHDSkVfu https://t.co/3O48zKsInN — Dictionary.com (@Dictionarycom) March 5, 2019 Forbes, on the other hand, developed their own ranking system which defines self-made on a scale from 0-10 with Oprah, who grew up poor and with serious substantial hardships scoring a 10 and Jenner, born with a silver spoon in her mouth and fame to leverage to her advantage scored a 7. A score of 1 means you inherited everything, which I guess earning royalties from a reality show since adolescence, and then launching a make-up company atop heaps of cash, is a far-cry from… but mkay, Forbes. I’m just going to leave my side-eye gifs here. Here are five real fired-from-their-first-job, worked-as-a-taxi-driver, climbed-their-way-to-the-top self-made billionaires. A post shared by Oprah (@oprah) on Jul 2, 2018 at 10:55am PDT Everybody’s favorite auntie, Oprah Winfrey is the GOAT rags to riches story. Oprah, who was fired from her first on-air job as a co-anchor at Baltimore’s WJZ-TV, grew up in poverty and without family connections or networks from which to flourish from. However, when she was told at the age of 22 she was “unfit for television news.” Now the media mogul, actress, and produce who secured her own talk show consisting of featuring A-listers, created her own network, as well as a a magazine and now her own pizza (now if that ain’t goals I don’t know what is), is and has been the richest African-American woman in the United States with an estimated worth of $2.5 billion. Michael Jordan Source: VINCE BUCCI / Getty Michael Jordan the original GOAT, is the world’s first billionaire athlete. MJ was born in Brooklyn, New York to an equipment supervisor and banker. He was one of five kids. In his sophomore year in high school, standing at 5’11” Jordan was told he was too short to qualify for the varsity basketball team. Determined to rise above, Jordan became the star of the junior varsity team. The following year, he qualified for the varsity team. He was recruited by numerous colleges before attending North Carolina for 3 years before entering the draft, shattering records, and becoming the Greatest Of All Time. While scoring an average of …. Per game, Jordan propelled himself to billionaire status by securing major sponsorships with Gatorade, Nike, Hanes, Upper Deck, and of course his legendary collaboration with Nike on the Jordan brand for $1 million. Days later Solange released the visual for ‘Almeda’ putting the black people and black pride of Houston on display through the visual. Although many times Solange has symbolism that we don’t understand ‘Almeda’ has a few obvious parallels to her life.  The title alone is an area of town where Solange spent a lot of time and the Almeda Mall was a landmark she has referenced on social media.  In the visual, you will notice a lot of the women wearing hairstyles that were popular in the 90’s.  We assume this is a nod to her mother that ran a popular hair salon in the area for many years.  The fashion in the visual also has touches of southern style with cowboy boots, hats and bolo ties.  From throwback 90’s hairstyles, throwback cell phones to black cowboys, ‘Almeda’ embodies how Houston impacted Solange’s creativity as a black woman. ‘Almeda’ features Playboi Cardi and The Dream on the track produced by Pharrell and John Carroll Kirby. The full-length visual for ‘When I Get Home’ can be seen on Apple Music and was filmed across various locations of Houston’s Third Ward. Michael Jackson’s Daughter Is Standing By Her Father, Despite Allegations

Follow this link:

“L eaving Neverland ” premiered Sunday and Monday on HBO. The documentary about child abuse allegations against Michael Jackson has caused many people to question the future of the King of Pop’s legacy. However, Paris Jackson , 20, is standing by her dad. See Also:  ‘I Thought It Was A Hoax’: Sparkle Talks R. Kelly’s Marriage To Aaliyah Paris Jackson said she he has not seen the documentary and “was not offered the chance to see it before it premiered at Sundance,” TMZ reported. Nonetheless, she “firmly believes” Michael Jackson was not a pedophile. In 1993, Michael Jackson was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy. In January of 1994, he reportedly settled for $23 million. The accuser’s father committed suicide in 2009, five months after the singer died. Jordan Chandler reportedly has never come forward about the allegations and supposedly lives outside of the country. In 2017, when Wade Robson, a choreographer who is featured in “Leaving Neverland,” accused Michael Jackson of sexual assault—even though he’d said in the past the singer didn’t assault him—there was a hunt to find Chandler. According to The Daily Mail , he left the U.S. to avoid investigators. In 2003, Michael Jackson was charged with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent to a 13-year-old boy. He was ultimately acquitted of all charges. Robson testified at the 2003 trial, but James Safechuck , the other person featured in “Leaving Neverland,” did not. Many people have been saying the documentary is untrue, including Brett Barnes , who said he knew Michael Jackson when he was child. According to TMZ , the film “implies Jackson molested him as a boy. As for why Barnes thinks this … Wade Robson — one of the singer’s well-known alleged victims — claims in the doc, Barnes ‘replaced him.’ The film then shows Michael and Brett together on tour. Thus, the insinuation.” Barnes has threatened HBO with a lawsuit “claiming the documentary puts him in a false light and subjects him to ‘hatred, contempt and ridicule.’ Presumably, the lawyer is saying MJ supporters will target Barnes as a result of the documentary.” Barnes testified at Michael Jackson’s criminal trial in 2005 and said he was never assaulted by him. He also tweeted this in January. Not only do we have to deal with these lies, but we’ve also got to deal with people perpetuating these lies. The fact that they fail to do the small amount of research it takes to prove these are lies, by choice or not, makes it even worse. — Brett Barnes (@IAmBrettBarnes) January 30, 2019 Michael Jackson was acquitted of all charges. Usually your ball-out times are the times you feel like there’s music you can relate to. When I Iisten to a commercial now, I’m like wow they’re using James Brown in a commercial, never thought that would happen.” He continued, “When you listen now and go, which one of these songs are they going to be playing 20 years from now? Will they be playing Drake in 20 years? Fetty Wap? We were trying to figure out yesterday, who’s the great solo artist now that? I’m talking about soul. We were listening to Stevie Wonder yesterday and going through this marvelous song clip that Stevie’s had for 30 years. Who’s that 30-year person for this generation.” When the reporters in the room suggested, “Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars?” He responded, “Bruno Mars is the Frankie Beverly of the millennials.
