We’re sure you have an idea of who you would choose, but let’s see what DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius say. In no particular order, our resident critics, Franchise and Landon Levarius, chose Lena Waithe as their first millennial star.  Lena is already well on her way to making black history. In fact, she made history in 2017 when she became the first Black woman to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Her Thanksgiving episode of Netflix’s “Masters of None” remains untouchable and she continues to create more and more content for the culture including “The Chi” on Showtime, “Boomerang” on BET, an upcoming series with Kid Fury coming to HBO and so much more. It’s a given that Lena Waithe will be creating more Black history in her career. The fourth Black millennial to make the list is Oakland’s own Ryan Coogler. Ryan has given us Fruitvale Station, Black Panther, Creed, he’s teamed up with Lebron James for the upcoming Space Jam sequel and he has much more on the way. When it comes to promising millennials in film that you absolutely must watch, Ryan Coogler is high on the list. He’s proven that he can direct phenomenal films and has no intentions of slowing down. It’ll be wonderful to see what other projects he comes up with in the next year. What other creatives do you think made our list? Press play on episode 31 of The Rewind to find out.

Bigoted Becky Recently Hired By HuffPost Swiftly Kicked To The Curb After Making Racist Comments On Social Media

Source: Chesnot / Getty HuffPost Fires Racist Social Media Editor A caucasian woman, who’d recently been hired as a social media editor for HuffPost , lost her job after making comments online that were so racist, you almost won’t believe them. On second thought, after considering everything that’s been going on during Black History Month this year, we’re not actually all that surprised. “Yesterday, HuffPost fired a recently hired, Los Angeles-based social media editor after her managers were alerted to the fact that an Instagram account belonging to the new hire was spewing racist rants online. Using a now-deleted Instagram account, Ashley Rose, who was hired earlier this month, targeted a number of people with the sort of racist invective you’d expect to find in the darkest 4chan threads,” The Concourse reports. As for the comments Rose made…they were disgusting. “I don’t dress my son like a thug, sorry. We don’t wear Jordans or Nike in this house because Nike sucks politically, and his father actually fought for this country’s freedom instead of sitting in a jail cell,” she said. “Your nephew is an ugly n***er like you! He looks like Coolio,” another comment read. “Y’all wonder why we stereotype and shoot your ignorant asses,” she continued. See screenshots of her racist rants here . Laura Wagner from The Concourse says she spoke with the young woman on the receiving end of Rose’s comments and apparently Rose was upset because she wants to support black-owned businesses. “I spoke to the woman who runs the Instagram account that Rose targeted,” Wagner stated. “She said it started because she wrote in a post about supporting black-owned businesses. In response, Rose wrote that she would only support white businesses, and from there it escalated.” People can be so ignorant…it’s an absolute shame. But the good news is, HuffPost did the right thing and let her go. Bye, girl!

Back Up, Bish! Haughty Houston Heffa Accosts Black Woman Taking Photos Of 1-Year-Old

Source: Noam Galai / Getty White Woman Harasses Black Mother Taking Photos Of Infant Daughter The ex-wife of Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, Franci Neely, was captured in a viral video accosting a Black woman and her husband who were doing a photo shoot to celebrate their 1-year-old daughter’s birthday. Kelyn Alyssa, the girl’s mother, recorded the tense confrontation and uploaded it to Facebook with a lengthy caption explaining what the hell was going on with this crazy white lady. Here’s what husband and father Isaiah Allen told Click2Houston: ‘These were our first professional shots we have taken of the baby since she’s been born. It was something that was supposed to be very special for us, and I hate the fact that, when I look at these pictures, this is what I have to remember. ‘She’s yelling things like, “You’re trampling the grass, that we pay for, you need to leave,’ even though we were on the walkway talking the picture. ‘She said, ‘You’re on private property. You need to get your stuff out now.’ (She was) very aggressive, in our face. It was escalating to the point where my wife suggested I start recording.’ All we have to say about Franci Neely is “FDB!”

Everything We Know About Jussie Smollett’s Allegedly ‘Orchestrated’ Attack

Here is the original post:

Source: VALERIE MACON / Getty It’s nearly impossible to scroll social media without coming across a headline about Jussie Smollett . The Empire actor is engulfed in controversy after accusing two men of attacking him during a late night in Chicago. Smollett said he was punched in the face, had bleach poured on him and he suffered a bruise on his face. He also accused the attackers of yelling, “this MAGA country n*gger” and putting a noose around his neck. Since then an array of reports have come out that portray Smollett as a “liar.” Smollett has been accused of “orchestrating” the attack with two Nigerian brothers who also appeared on Empire. Here’s everything we know about the incident so far: Days before the attack, a threatening and racist letter addressed to Smollett was sent to CBS Chicago with a powdery substance inside that appeared to be Tylenol. Smollett was allegedly attacked by two men in Streeterville, Chicago early Jan. 29 morning after going to Subway He hesitated to call the police because of his pride but fully cooperated when he finally did contact them. Smollett revealed police didn’t initially ask him for his phone records, but wanted his phone. He didn’t hand it over because he had valuable and personal information in his phone. He did submit his phone records within an hour of the attack but they were redacted versions and the police needed more information. Jussie’s celebrity friends and fans of the actor came to his defense, calling out the forces who give energy to the MAGA movement and condemning racism. President Trump called the incident, “horrible.” “Doesn’t get worse,” he added. A police investigation turns up no surveillance footage of the attack, but shows two “persons of interest.” In his first performance after the attack, Jussie called himself the “gay tupac.” Jussie Smollett does Good Morning America interview, giving details about the alleged attack. According to his testimony, the attacker punched him and he struck him back. “We started tussling, it was very icy.” He added, “There was a second person involved who was kicking me in my back.” Apparently, his manager was on the phone during the attack. “Then I looked down and noticed there was a rope around my neck.” The homes of Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, who were seen on the surveillance video, were raided. They were arrested but quickly released. “Due to new evidence as a result of today’s interrogations, the individuals questioned by police in the Empire case have now been released without charging.” BREAKING:Police raided the home of two persons of interest in Jussie Smollett case last night. Both men are of Nigerian decent and have appeared as extras on the show. Police took bleach, shoes electronics and more.Officers asked family if they knew #Jussiesmollett . @cbschicago pic.twitter.com/PDSFtf5jwb — Charlie De Mar (@CharlieDeMar) February 14, 2019 According to the brothers, they rehearsed the attack with Smollett days before the incident. They reportedly scouted a spot to orchestrate the attack where cameras would catch it. Apparently Jussie wanted the incident to be “physical” but not too harmful. They “made contact with Jussie’s face” but it was “weak.” The “attack” wasn’t caught on camera like Jussie had originally thought because cameras were facing north// away from where the incident occurred. Countless celebs have come out against Jussie after reports surfaced claiming the “attack” was orchestrated. “As a victim of a hate crime who has cooperated with the police investigation, Jussie Smollett is angered and devastated by recent reports that the perpetrators are individuals he is familiar with,” said defense lawyers Todd S. Pugh and Victor P. Henderson in a statement obtained by Deadline. “Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying.” Jussie’s role on Empire has reportedly been “slashed” in the wake of the allegedly staged attack. He was originally supposed to be in nine episodes, featuring one big musical scene. His sister Jurnee posted this message on social media. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jurnee Smollett Bell (@jurneebell) on Feb 18, 2019 at 11:17pm PST Jussie will plead his case in front of a grand jury who will decide if he should be indicted on charges for filing a false police report. The Osundairo brothers volunteered to testify. Kamala Harris Rises In Polls As New Surveys Show Biden Less Dominant

See the rest here:

C alifornia’s Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris has seen a bump in the polls, as the accuracy of early surveys come under question that pegged former Vice President Joe Biden as the clear frontrunner for the 2020 Democratic nomination. See Also: Poll Shows What Crucial Iowa Voters Think About Likely Black Candidates For President Politico pointed out on Monday that at least two recent polls suggested that Biden does not have the 30-point lead that earlier polls found. The methodology of those early surveys apparently skewed the results and painted Biden as a formidable candidate if he decides to run. New surveys indicated that many Democrats are undecided and Biden—unlike Harris—may have benefited from name recognition in those earlier polls. One notable poll in December—before any Democrats announce their presidential bid—found that 32 percent of Iowa Democrats favored Biden in a field of about 20 possible opponents. Harris and New Jersey’s Democratic Sen. Cory Booker found themselves in the middle of the pack in the single digits. “People are weighing their options. I think the reason that so many people are getting in is because this is a 1-to-15 percent spread, not a 1-to-30 percent spread. It’s very different from 2016, when Hillary Clinton was at 40 or 50 percent,” said Steen Kirby, a campaigns and data specialist with Bold Blue Campaigns, adding that new polling shows that “it’s a very open field.” A new poll shows what Iowa Democrats think about nominating a Black candidate for president in 2020, including Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker… https://t.co/sgBsxwT1l0 pic.twitter.com/TBc9NUPnEy — NewsOne (@newsone) December 16, 2018 Bold Blue Campaigns’ survey , published Feb. 12, found that Biden led Harris by just 1 point—12 percent to 11 percent among likely Democratic primary voters. That result was similar to an  ABC News/Washington Post poll  published during the last week of January, which also gave Biden a 1-point lead over Harris—9 percent to 8 percent. Kirby pointed to the methodology of early pollsters as part of the reason that Biden was shown to have a huge lead over his potential rivals. Those surveys offered a menu of potential candidates but neglected to ask the voters if they were undecided. When Bold Blue Campaigns gave respondents that option, nearly half of them—48 percent—said they had not firmly decided on which Democrat to support. The December poll of Iowa Democrats was viewed as an early indication of which Candidate was most likely to win the party’s Iowa Caucus, which is scheduled for  Feb. 3, 2020. As the first primary contest in the nation, a win in Iowa could cement a primary victory. The winner has won the Democratic presidential nomination in six consecutive election cycles . Cardi B: Jussie Smollett RUINED Black History Month!! WTF?!

Once again, Cardi B is going live on Instagram and saying what we're all thinking. This time, she feels hurt and betrayed over reports that Jussie Smollett staged his own assault . She also says that it's possible that the police are framing Jussie … which she can believe because she says that police once framed her . “I’m really disappointed in him,” Cardi says of Jussie Smollett on Instagram Live. “I feel like he f–ked up Black History Month, bro. Like, damn.” “I’m not gonna say, yet,” she notes. “Until he say it out his mouth that it was fake and the shit was staged,” “I don’t want to completely blame him,” Cardi adds. She explains that her reluctance is “because somebody I was talking to they said police in Chicago are racists.” The Chicago PD is infamous, even among other metropolitan police departmants. (It took 13 months for the police to release dash cam video that showed Laquan McDonald walking away from police, proving that his death was a murder) “So,” Cardi suggests. “They might probably try to frame him and make him look like he’s a liar.” “But if he’s not,” Cardi continues. “Then bro you f–ked up, for real.” “Like, why would you do that?” she asks. A staged hate crime, especially one so famous, will be used as fodder to cast doubt on future real hate crime reports. “You got Donald Trump immunity to f–king laugh,” Cardi accuses. Cardi laments: “You make motherf–kers look bad.” “You know why I want to give him the benefit of the doubt?” Cardi rhetorically asks her followers. “I remember about 2 years ago … my cousin got into an argument with this boy, this guy, like road rage,” she says. “And my cousin got out of the car,” she narrates. “And I got out of the car.” “And you know I'm always throwing s–t,” Cardi notes. “So I threw the guy a bottle of water.” “And the guy,” she says. “He doesn't really want to fight my cousin, he wants to really fight me.” “So, the police came, and they put me in like, a headlock,” Cardi accuses. “I got on Instagram,” she notes. “And said how the police got me in a headlock.” “And since I went on Instagram, I had 12 come into my home, calling my phone, leaving me letters saying that I have to speak to them,” she describes. Various police departments have been accused of using intimidation tactics, even agaist celebrities, in order to cover for wrongdoings. “And then, when I didn't speak to them, I went to my grandmother's house,” Cardi claims. Cardi says that police were “trying to harass my cousin and everybody to talk to them.” “And since I never gave a statement to the police,” she says. “They put out a statement saying that I did it to promote my album” “So,” Cardi explains. “I don't wanna call Jussie Smollett a complete liar.” “But they do claim that they have evidence from both the brothers [to whom they spoke],” she notes. “I don't know,” Cardi admits. “I want to see what else.” Don't we all. “Because if he did that … he really f–ked up, bro,” Cardi says. “This February, you have so many people standing for you.” “I mean, why would you do that, bro?” she asks. Maybe the weirdest thing about 2019 is how deeply relatable Cardi B's viral rants, whether they're about Jussie or politics, have been. Like Cardi, we are incredibly disappointed at reports that Jussie staged his own attack. As she says, this could be used against the black acommunity and the LGBTQ+ community, and is political fodder for Trump. That said, like Cardi, we have heard troubling things about the Chicago Police Department. We would all like to have a clearer picture of the evidence before rendering our judgment.

O.D. Excellence: These Teachers Have Officially Won Black History Month

See the original post here:

Source: Alejandro Gallardo / EyeEm / Getty Despite all the madness going on in the world, it does feel like people are putting forth lots of effort this year to celebrate Black History Month. African-American teachers all across the country have decided to switch from the tradition BHM celebration for something newer, truer and more fun. Although there’s nothing wrong with honoring our forefathers by dressing up as them or reading about the same people — educators these days understand the importance of creativity and fun when it comes to teaching young Black kids about their history. Social media has sparked a trend of teachers decorating their door with Black cultural icons of the past and present, all with the help of a little construction paper. One of the first decorated doors to go viral was Glen Mourning , a 4th grade reading teacher at Friendship Public Charter School in Washington D.C. Mourning’s life sized door version of Colin Kaepernick had Black Twitter so proud. View this post on Instagram I’ve always dreamed of becoming an NFL superstar and when this guy right here decided to fight for love and equality…He changed my perspective on what being a big time play maker actually meant. The sign read, “They didn’t steal slaves. They stole scientists, doctors, architects, teachers, entrepreneurs, astronomers, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, etc, and made them slaves. Sincerely, your ancestors.” A photo of Lake Alfred Elementary School teacher Chanique Davis’ classroom door also made its rounds on social media. I mean, who doesn’t want to see features of a young Black girl rocking a tilted crown, natural hair and kente cloth during Black History Month. Davis told Edweek , “In a lot of corporate American settings, they don’t allow such a style. I wanted [my students] to know that this style is to be celebrated—it’s not to be shunned and it’s not anything negative. It’s a beautiful style, and … it’s just like anyone else’s hair: It’s welcomed, it’s celebrated. Since they are learning about the Martin Luther Kings and the Malcolm Xs in other settings, I want to be the one to let them know there are people who are currently adding to black history.” Anecia White of Harvest Preparatory School opted for the beautiful Black woman visuals too. She told People magazine “My source of inspiration for the door was every student in my classroom. They inspire me to be a better teacher every day, and I hope to inspire them to continue to learn about themselves.” Only two weeks left of Black History Month. We can’t wait to see else folks will come up with. *Raises fist in the air*
