#Free21Savage: Black Lives Matter Starts Petition To Stop 21 Savage’s Deportation

Source: Prince Williams / Getty The Group Goes After ICE’s Targeting Of The Black Community On Sunday, the Internet was left in shock when word hit that 21 Savage was arrested by ICE and could be deported to the U.K. Well the Black Lives Matter network isn’t about to sit around and not do anything about the rapper’s detainment. The movement’s co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors started a petition on OrganizeFor.org  demanding a stop to 21’s deportation. The petition explains how 21, born She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is just one example of a larger issue of Black deportation: “The circumstances of Mr. Abraham-Joseph’s detention stand as a testament to the consistent and historically under-reported harassment and targeting of Black immigrants,” the petition reads. “The US’ violent history of criminalizing Blackness intersects with its deadly legacy of detaining and deporting Black and Brown immigrants. This needs to stop today!” The petition is aiming for 200,000 signatures and has already received over 128,000 as of Tuesday morning. The hashtag #Free21Savage has also been created to push the cause. According to WSB-TV 2 , 21’s legal rep Charles Kuck released a statement saying 21’s arrest was “based upon incorrect information about prior criminal charges and [ICE is] now refusing to release him on bond of any amount, despite the fact that he has a pending U-Visa application (as the victim of crime) with USCIS, and that he has relief from removal available to him.” A U-Visa is a special category for victims of specific crimes “who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity,”  according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Only 10,000 U-Visas are available every year. Kuck didn’t explain the incident based on which 21 applied for the visa. Kuck said that his client isn’t currently being charged with any crimes, thus 21’s detainment is a “civil law violation” and “serves no other purpose than to unnecessarily punish him and try to intimidate him into giving up his right to fight to remain in the United States.” Kuck also mentioned that “Mr. Abraham-Joseph has US citizen children that he supports and is eligible for relief from deportation. We and he will fight for his release, for his family, and his right to remain in our country.” If you’re interested in signing the petition for 21’s release, you can check it out here .

Read the rest here:

B lack directors are making power moves in the entertainment industry. Many of them are racking up accolades for their work while breaking down racial barriers in an effort to ensure that the next generation of Black filmmakers have a seat at the table. One of those trailblazers is Chinonye Chukwu . Chukwu recently made history at the Sundance Film Festival by becoming the first Black woman to win the Grand Jury Prize for her movie Clemency , IndieWire reported. #Sundance2019 : “Clemency” Filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu Is First Black Woman to Win Festival's Biggest Prize https://t.co/jLS5yQ2RP4 pic.twitter.com/3w88ZlmiAc — IndieWire (@IndieWire) February 3, 2019 The prize is the highest honor that is given at the festival, the news outlet writes. Chukwu’s film —which stars Alfre Woodard , Danielle Brooks , Wendell Pierce , and Aldis Hodge —is centered on a prison warden who has to carry out death row executions. The film explores how doing the executions has a psychological impact. Chukwu, who wrote and directed the film, is humbled by the honor. “When everybody was saying ‘No’ this story does not have an audience, you, Sundance and the people who have seen this film have proven that there is an audience for this film, and I thank you,” she said in a statement, according to Deadline . “I wrote this because I wanted audiences, I wanted us, I wanted myself to connect with the ecosystem of humanity’s connected to incarceration, so we as a society can stop defining people by their worst possible acts, that we can end mass incarceration, and dismantle the mass prison industrial complex, and root our societies in true justice and mercy and freedom, which is all tied to our joy inside, that nobody can ever incarcerate or execute.” The filmmaker joins a distinguished list of pivotal directors who have won the Grand Jury Prize for their U.S. Dramatic entries, including Ryan Coogler , Damien Chazelle , and Desiree Akhavan . Black women in entertainment are starting off the year strong. In January, Marsai Martin made history as Hollywood’s youngest executive producer, Regina Hall became the first Black woman to receive a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, and Taraji P. Henson received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. SEE ALSO: #BlackExcellence: Taraji P. Chicago Woman Leads Effort To Provide Hotel Rooms For City’s Homeless

A s the deep freeze sweeps several parts of the country, concerns surrounding the homeless population have been heightened. Temperatures have reached dangerously cold levels and many are worried about how those living on the streets will stay warm. A Chicago woman has taken matters into her own hands. According to CBS Chicago , Candice Payne rented hotel rooms this week so that the city’s homeless residents could have shelter in the cold weather. Candice Payne's selfless act spurred a group to rent 60 hotel rooms to keep homeless people off the streets of Chicago during the historic cold. “Maybe they didn’t know how to or where to start to help, so I’m glad that I was able to be that vehicle.” https://t.co/m7s5WVjgaC pic.twitter.com/Nip4kI8bKh — CBS Chicago (@cbschicago) February 1, 2019 Payne was motivated to step in and help men and women in need after she learned that a propane tank where many homeless people stayed in a cluster of tents had exploded, the news outlet writes. That tank was one of the only sources of heat for the community. Payne decided to step in and rented 20 rooms on her credit card so that individuals without homes would have a place to stay during the frigid temperatures. After posts about her efforts to help the homeless circulated on social media, other individuals volunteered to help. People rented out additional hotel rooms, and donated food, water, and clothes. With the support of volunteers, there has been a total of 60 rooms rented. Nearly 100 people have been accommodated for three-night stays. Payne is happy that she was able to make an impact. “Maybe they didn’t know how to or where to start to help, so I’m glad that I was able to be that vehicle,” she told the news outlet. The individuals that she has helped are thankful for all that Payne has done. “We don’t get that type of help,” one of the people staying at the hotel said. “I really needed them at that point, so they came right in time.” She and the volunteers are working towards creating more of a lasting solution for the city’s homeless population. Efforts like the one she has led are needed. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development , in 2017 there were 554,000 homeless people in the United States and 193,000 of those individuals were living on the streets and didn’t have access to shelters. The Shiggy Show Is Cancelled: Shiggy Says He’s Done Shuckin & Shuffling For Our Amusement

Shiggy made the shocking announcement on his Instagram page. He posted a message saying, “Stop asking me to dance… I’M DONE”. As expected, no one in his comments really took him seriously. Many of his celebrity fans laughed off his plea. One follower said, “Nah bro, you gotta dance! At least do it for the kids”, to which Shiggy replied, “Nah, I’m done for real. Shit not fun no more. You could see it in my eyes.” For what it’s worth, Shiggy has been looking miserable with the on demand dancing for a while now. In a recent video, Harlem rapper Dave East demanded Shiggy dance on cue. At first, Shiggy attempted to play it off as if he didn’t hear him, but that didn’t stop the chants. Needless to say, Shiggy did what he was told.   Even social media caught on to Shiggy’s cries for help. they got shiggy dancing in Dave east IG videos and he just tryna chill pic.twitter.com/HjtYGENkXz — Freddy B (@FredBeezy561) January 29, 2019 I mean, he didn’t lie, you really can see the misery in his eyes. Just a few days ago, on Instagram Live, he told his fans that he was going to call it quits and even blamed Dave East for making him realize how much he hates “shooking and jiving.” I guess no one believed him then, either. While at a game at the Barclays Center, Shiggy did the In My Feelings challenge courtside for the entire world to see. He looked happy enough on the outside. Who knew he was being tortured within, though. Then again, Black Twitter could see he was being manipulated by the masses. They wasted no time making memes. Nicki Minaj: Why Fans Think She Dissed Drake In New ‘Hard White’ Music Video!

Nicki Minaj just released a brand new music video and according to her fans, she’s definitely TRASHING fellow rapper, Drake. The video for her Queen  track ‘Hard White’ dropped today on February 1 and naturally, her fans aren’t wasting any time to decode and dissect every possible savage moment. At one point in the visual, a scorpion appears and then dies as it fractures into a ton of tiny pieces. Scorpion was the name of Drake’s full-length album in 2018 and of course, fans are connecting the imagery as a hidden nod to the artist. The Barbies took to Twitter to express their feelings about the so-called diss, according to Hollywood Life. Nicki Minaj – Hard White “Just killed another career, it’s a mild day. #hardwhite #endeddrake” a fan tweeted after watching the video.  Another fan said, “Did Nicki really say f**k Drake like that like that?”  While some fans had no sympathy saying “finish him.” Fans also thought her song ‘Barbie Dreams’ was a diss at Drake when she rapped “Drake worth a hundred milli, always buying me shit/but I don’t know if the p***y wet though or if he crying and s**t” Minaj clarified saying “with ‘Barbie Dreams’, you guys do know that is not a diss, right? You do know people I said on ‘Barbie Dreams’… I said things about people who I know can take a joke and who I know can’t be emotional with it.” So, maybe killing the scorpion symbol is just a harsh joke, or maybe it has no connection at all. OR maybe the Barbz are actually on to something here. Minaj also seems to throw some shade at the Grammys. “I’m the trophy of the game, everybody tryna win me,” she raps as she holds a gramophone.  According to E!  Queen missed the eligibility period, so Minaj will not be considered at this year’s ceremony.  Despite the Grammy snub, the album did go platinum earlier this month.  But anyway, back to more ‘important’ news: Whether you think Nicki is making a dig at Drake or just thought a scorpion was a cool idea you should still check out the video. The haunting visuals show the A-list rapper dressed in a long sleeve gown with an elaborate headdress. And then she is seen in a futuristic silver mini dress while sitting atop a throne with burning torches on both sides.  The Queen is ready for war. Tamar Braxton Says Her Nigerian King Was Strictly Swirling Before Their Black Baeship

Source: CBS Photo Archive/Contributor / Getty Tamar Braxton Says Her Boyfriend Used To Only Date White Women Tamar Braxton’s boo apparently had a preference for women who looked strikingly different than her. While continuing to be the highlight of “Celebrity Big Brother”, Tay Tay told her former almost fight partner Lo Lo Jones that her boo a.k.a. “T’Challa”  had a preference for white women before they dated. Mind you, Tamar said something similar about her ex-husband  and noted he “went for blondes” before her. “I met T’Challa and now it’s a wrap again. But he didn’t date Black women, which is crazy,” said Tamar in a clip seen on MadameNoire . “He did not date Black women. It’s like, I’m attracted to men who don’t like Black women. Vince neither, remember that? Vince either. […] “All white girls or others.” Tay also added that her bae, who hails from Nigeria, changed her mind about marriage. “When me and Vince split up I thought I would never get married again. I didn’t want to go through that again. It was a lot. I just never thought…I’m really grateful about it.” While we still haven’t seen Tamar’s Wakandan King, she recently talked about her King with Wendy Williams who noted that he has dreads and a “really nice body.” Tay also said her man’s more than a snack he’s a “lunchable” and a Harvard businessman who she wants to have babies with. If you haven’t been watching Tamar on “Celebrity Big Brother” you’re seriously missing out, she was recently named fan favorite for her antics. See more Tamar on CBB on the flip.

Taraji P Henson Talks Love For Successful Black Women, What Men Want & More

What Men Want hits theaters next week. The latest movie was super producer Will Packer that stars Taraji P Henson tells the story of Ali Davis, a successful black woman trying to make partner at a big sports agency in Atlanta that has clients like Lisa Leslie , Shaquille O’Neal and more. When she gets passed up for a big promotion to someone who isn’t as good as she is, Ali starts wonders what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world. Hoping to find answers from a psychic who makes her drink a weird concoction that suddenly allows her to hear what men are thinking. Using her newfound ability, Ali starts to turn the tables on her obnoxious male colleagues while racing to sign the next basketball superstar. This movie highlights a strong woman who isn’t afraid to make the first move on a guy, puts her career first and is willing to stop at nothing to get to the top. While watching this hilarious tale of Ali Davis I drew a parallel to some of my successful Black female friends who haven’t been able to find love. So I asked Taraji her thoughts on why men are cautious when approaching successful Black women. Taraji thinks when Black women label themselves as strong it can scar potential dates away. Taraji explained that “A lot of men feel like they don’t have anything to offer,” a successful Black woman but they need to, “Stop thinking of it in terms of material things. Usually, when a woman is successful and she’s made her way in the world and she’s got her money, she’s financially stable — What she needs and what’s often missing is the emotional support. Sometimes that’s literally what we need from a man. We need emotional support and to feel loved unconditionally.” That What Men Want star goes on to explain that when she has to go out in the world and fight her battles and prove her worth she needs a man at home who is saying, ‘Baby you can do it.’ Taraji goes on to explain how calling yourself a strong black woman can scare potential men you want to date away. In What Men Want Taraji’s ambition does come into play with her relationship interest in the film, which is played by former Underground star Aldis Hodge. The ups and downs of their relationship journey lead to some really funny on camera moments that make What Men Want extremely funny helping 2019 continue Hollywood’s run at some extremely great films. So on February 8th so see What Men Want if you want to see a funny movie that pushes gender norms while entertaining to the masses.

Update: Black Woman Who Died Carrying Infant Down Subway Steps May Have Suffered ‘Medical Episode’

View post:

Malaysia Goodson , a 22-year-old Black woman, died after falling down the subway steps at the Midtown’s 7th Avenue station while trying to carry her 1-year-old daughter Rhylee in a stroller. She had apparently been also carrying groceries. Goodson was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at the bottom of the steps. The baby survived with minor injuries. “It may have been a medical episode,” an NYPD spokesperson told PEOPLE . “There’s no indication that the fall may have caused her death. But we can’t know for sure until the [medical examiner] lets us know.” “I don’t know, maybe she was starting to feel faint,” Goodson’s mother, Tamika Goodson, told the  Post . Goodson reportedly suffered from problems with her thyroid and complained of headaches prior to her untimely death. “I’m just still trying to take it all in,’’ the mom said. “I’m trying to see if I’m dreaming. I’m in disbelief.” Goodson’s death raised concerns around the lack of elevators in stations like the one Goodson died in. The MTA has approved 50 new elevators in stations across the city.
