The Oscar nominated movie will be hitting up participating AMC theaters February 1-7 in celebration of Black History Month. According to ABC 7 , Marvel made the announcement on Monday and Disney CEO Bob Iger tweeted that tickets will be free for everyone. He also announced that Disney will donate $1.5 million to the United Negro College Fund, one of the nations largest Black education organizations, in order “to make the dream of higher education a reality for more students.” Today we are excited to announce #BlackPanther will return to the big screen to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth from Feb 1-7 at participating AMC theaters. Tickets are free! We will also donate $1.5M to @UNCF to make the dream of higher education a reality for more students. — Robert Iger (@RobertIger) January 28, 2019   The big announcement comes right off of Black Panther’ s big win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. BP won the top honor of Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture. The King of Wakanda, a.k.a. Chadwick Boseman, gave a moving speech, saying, “To be young, gifted & Black, we all know what it’s like to be told there’s not a screen for you to be featured on, there’s not a stage for you to be featured on.” He continued, “And that is what we went to work with every day because we knew, not that we would be around during awards season and that it would make a billion dollars, but we knew we had something special that we wanted to give the world.” Now,  Black Panther is headed to the Oscars with seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Music Score, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing and Best Original Song for “All the Stars.” You can find out if BP will take home the gold on Sunday, February 24 at 8 p.m. eastern. In the position, she will be responsible for examining the pressing health issues faced by people living in the state and implementing effective strategies to overcome them. One of the things on her agenda is providing outreach for young families. Burke Harris, 43, is well-suited for the position as she’s dedicated her career to spreading awareness about health conditions. She founded the Center for Youth Wellness in San Francisco in 2012 as a resource for children who were exposed to toxic trauma and stress at an early age. Harris is at the helm of the Bay Area Research Consortium on Toxic Stress and Health and is a part of several health-focused organizations including the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics National Advisory Board for Screening. Burke Harris took to social media to share her excitement about becoming the state’s first surgeon general. “Looking forward to rolling up my sleeves as CA’s first Surgeon General,” she posted on Twitter. “Thank you @GavinNewsom for your bold vision for health for all Californians. #preventscreenandheal!” Her appointment means a lot for representation in medicine. Institutions across the country are trying to empower Black students so that they can follow in her footsteps. According to a report released by the Association of American Medical Colleges, Howard University is the top institution for sending African-American applicants to U.S. medical schools. S everal Black athletes are paying it forward by giving back to the communities that they grew up in. Just days after it was reported that NFL star Marshawn Lynch was combating gentrification in his hometown of Oakland, NBA player Kevin Durant has opened a new after-school center for youth in Prince George’s County, Maryland, ESPN reported. On Wednesday, Kevin Durant attended the grand opening of “The Durant Center” in Suitland, MD. Opened in partnership with College Track, The Durant Center is a state-of-the-art facility aimed at helping low-income and underserved students enroll and graduate from college. pic.twitter.com/YIRxzTNrGC — The Undefeated (@TheUndefeated) January 24, 2019 The facility—which is named after the Golden State Warriors player—will serve as a resource center that provides tools and assistance for youth to further their education, the news outlet writes. The NBA player provided $10 million for the creation of College Track at The Durant Center. Durant unveiled the new center before a group of local children who will be involved in the program on Wednesday. It was a full-circle moment for him; the center is located just a few blocks away from where he grew up. “To have this as a kind of staple and my family’s name on it and it’s doing so much for kids, man. It’s one of the greatest accomplishments so far in my career,” he said in an interview with the Washington Post . “As a basketball player it’s easy for us to say, ‘Let’s create an AAU team or let’s do a camp.’ As you get older, you start to look for bigger ways to impact. I see my peers, and not just NBA players but athletes in general, but just trying to push the future forward, push the youth forward.” The opening of the center comes months after Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James opened the I Promise School for at-risk youth in Akron.
