Source: NBC / Getty The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is being reimagined once again thanks to a fan-made trailer that pays homage to Aunt Viv. Only this time, the beloved 90s show is put within the Jordan Peele horror context where the dark-skinned Aunt Viv and the light-skinned Aunt Viv become violent adversaries. The trailer was the brainchild of filmmaker Bobby Huntley and Colbie Fray after they met at Sundance Film Festival. “We left Sundance knowing we wanted to work together on something within the near future,” Huntley said, according to Shadow and Act. “A month or so later, I called her late one night and pitched her this idea and without hesitation, she came on board.” Along with Fray’s creative partner Olamma Opparah , the filmmakers fleshed out the idea for the fan-made trailer called Auntie . Then, they produced the movie with a crew made up of mostly Black women, including producers Cassondra “Cassie” Beasley, Kayla Daniels and cinematographer Mya Morton. The description for the plot reads: “ After a long, excruciating stint at a mental facility, Vivian Banks is released. Against strict orders from her psychiatrist, she makes her way back to Bel Air. Only to find her home and family has no recollection of her and every evidence of her existence has been erased. She must find out who was behind the hostile takeover before it is too late to reclaim her family and her home.” The trailer stars Theresa Lang, Letitia Jackson, Nic Starr and Charles Huggins. “Our goal isn’t to pit the two real-life actresses against each,” Huntley said. “They both did an amazing job bringing that character to life in their own unique way. We love every actor and actress affiliated with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Ai r. It’s just human nature to contrast and compare. For people to still debate over 25 years later is really a testament to their talents and longevity. We are just simply asking the question, ‘What If?’” You can check out the hilarious concept for yourself below.
Source: Splash News / Splash News Card-carrying victim-blamer candace owens is continuing to be on brand with #metoo critiques after Matt Lauer has been accused of rape. Lauer was initially fired from the “Today” show in 2017 after an anonymous former NBC News employee accused him of sexual misconduct. Now, according to Variety , the full details of the complaint are coming out thanks to a new book by Ronan Farrow called “Catch and Kill.” The book covers Farrow’s investigation of Harvey Weinstein and all the hoops he had to jump through with his then-employer NBC News. One of the biggest moments in the book came when Farrow interviewed the woman who made a complaint against Lauer. She finally revealed herself to be Brooke Nevils and according to Farrow’s book, she says Lauer anally raped her in a hotel room when they were both at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Nevils says in the book that after a night of drinking at a hotel bar, she went to Lauer’s hotel room twice. She went the first time to retrieve her press pass, which Lauer had taken as a joke. She went the second time because she was invited back by Lauer. Farrow writes that Nevils “had no reason to suspect Lauer would be anything but friendly based on prior experience.” Once she was in his room, Nevils says that Lauer — who was wearing boxers and a T-shirt — pushed her against the door and kissed her. Farrow writes that he then pushed her onto the bed, “flipping her over, asking if she liked anal sex.” She said that she declined several times and “was in the midst of telling him she wasn’t interested again when he ‘just did it.’” The book continues, “Lauer, she said, didn’t use lubricant. The encounter was excruciatingly painful. ‘It hurt so bad. I remember thinking, Is this normal?’ She told me she stopped saying no, but wept silently into a pillow.” “It was nonconsensual in the sense that I was too drunk to consent,” Nevils told Farrow. “It was nonconsensual in that I said, multiple times, that I didn’t want to have anal sex.” In a letter addressing the allegations, Lauer described the night as “mutual and completely consensual.” Lauer and Nevils continued to see each other for sex when they returned to New York, but Farrow explained in his interview with Nevils, “She readily admitted that her communications with Lauer might have appeared friendly and obliging. But she also said she lived in terror of Lauer jeopardizing her career and that the encounters caused anguish and shame that eventually prompted her to break up with her boyfriend.” Apparently, Candace Owens thought this was a good moment to attack the #MeToo movement and to do her usual victim blaming. She tweeted, “ Reading Matt Lauer’s accuser’s story & it’s EVERYTHING I hate about the #metoo movement. She admits she consensually went to his hotel room but was “too drunk to consent”. She also admits she had multiple consensual sexual relations w/ him after her alleged rape.” Reading Matt Lauer’s accuser’s story & it’s EVERYTHING I hate about the #metoo movement. She admits she consensually went to his hotel room but was “too drunk to consent”. She also admits she had multiple consensual sexual relations w/ him after her alleged rape. PERISCOPE SOON. — Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) October 9, 2019 Then, Owens went on Periscope to suggest we live in an era of “blameless women” and sexual assault victims should take responsibility when in drunk situations. She did so by ridiculously comparing her non-rape related drunk college experience with the experience of intoxicated rape victims. “I got completely blacked out. And in this Black-out spell I started screaming at my girlfriends, I mean we were away somewhere at a party and I was screaming at them and at one point, I took my shoe off and started hitting her car window.” Owens then went on to say that after this night, her two girlfriends didn’t want anything to do with her. After immense shame, she “acknowledged” that she did something to herself by drinking alcohol and apologized to her friends. What this mundane drunk night situation has to do with getting raped is beyond comprehension. But Candace kept on going and proceeded to chastise Nevils for not filing a police report when the alleged rape happen and for continuing to see Lauer after the alleged incident. “That is not an example to me of a true rape,” Owens said. #metoo , @HillaryClinton and the era of blameless women. https://t.co/DL8MIFloN8 — Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) October 9, 2019 Leave it to Candace Owens to have no comprehension of the layers to sexual assault. W hile some people were celebrating that Amber Guyger was convicted of murdering Botham Jean in Dallas, Texas on Sept. 6 2018, there was another injustice happening in Georgia. Former police Zechariah Presley was acquitted of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of unarmed Black man Tony Green . He was only 33. SEE ALSO: Complaint Filed Against Judge Tammy Kemp For ‘Unconstitutional’ Behavior After Amber Guyger Sentencing According to the Associated Press , Pastor Mack De’Von Knight, whose church Green attended, said outside of the courthouse, “He admitted that he killed Tony Green in cold blood, To me, it’s hunting season for the young Black man and we’re being gunned down in the streets and there’s no repercussions, there’s no consequences for these officers.” Presley said he followed Green’s car on the night of On the evening of June 20, 2018, Presley was reportedly following Green’s car because he believed he was driving with a suspended license. According to “dash camera video showed Green drive the car off the road, then open the door and run. He briefly returned to the vehicle to grab an unseen object, then fled again.” Presley chased Green on foot, the two struggled, which could not be be seen on camera. Green was then shot eight times. The AP also reported, “On the witness stand Wednesday, Presley added details he had not mentioned previously. He said he opened fire after Green turned back to face him and extended an arm, saying he feared Green had a gun. Investigators determined the object in his hand was a cellphone.” Prosecutor Rocky Bridges slammed this new account in the closing argument, saying, “He made a fatal mistake and it was a mistake that cost a man his life. You don’t have to like Tony Green. … He ran from the police, not a good decision. But he was not armed. He did not turn on officer Presley. He did not deserve to die.” Nonetheless, he was acquitted of manslaughter charges. However, the jury did find Zechariah Presley guilty of violating his oath of office. He faces a prison term of one to five years and will be sentenced Oct. 18. Rest in power to Tony Green. View this post on Instagram Ex-Officer #NotGuilty of #Manslaughter in #Georgia Shooting Associated Press • Oct. 6, 2019, at 2:28 a.m. #WOODBINEGa. (AP) — A former Georgia police officer who fatally shot a fleeing, #unarmedblackman was #acquitted Saturday of #voluntarymanslaughter and #involuntary/manslaughter. The jury, however, found #ZechariahPresley guilty of violating his oath of office in the 2018 shooting of #TonyGreen, 33, in coastal #CamdenCounty near the Georgia-Florida state line. Presley was ordered to be jailed pending sentencing Oct. 18. He faces a prison term of one to five years. Presley sat silently at the defense table. Green's relatives wiped away tears after the verdict was read. Pastor Mack De'Von Knight, whose church Green attended, denounced the acquittals outside the courthouse, saying the evidence was “open and shut.” “He admitted that he killed Tony Green in cold blood,” Knight said. “To me, it's hunting season for the young black man and we're being gunned down in the streets and there's no repercussions, there's no consequences for these officers.” Though Presley's body camera recorded his fatal encounter with Green, darkness and something covering the camera lens obscured the shooting and the moments leading up to it. That left the jury to weigh Presley's court testimony recalling what had occurred with a sometimes conflicting account by prosecutors and investigators. Presley said he followed Green's car on the night of June 20, 2018, because he believed Green was driving with a suspended license. Dash camera video showed Green drive the car off the road, then open the door and run. He briefly returned to the vehicle to grab an unseen object, then fled again. Presley chased Green on foot down a darkened street. A short struggle followed that's not visible on the video. The recording picked up the electrified clicking sound from Presley's Taser, followed by eight gunshots. Another officer arrives afterward to find Presley lying on the ground. Presley says Green had been on top of him, trying to grab his Taser. Presley then says: “And then I was going for my gun, and he started taking off. And I fired.” A post shared by Chris Bird (@bigbirddirector) on Oct 7, 2019 at 3:38pm PDT SEE ALSO: Some No Name, Pitchy R&B Singer Disrespected Keith Sweat And Gets Demolished On Twitter Outrageous! R epresentation is everything. In an effort to teach children about the importance of entrepreneurship and building wealth, a Black-owned media company based in New Orleans created a flashcard game that highlights the journeys of Black millionaires and billionaires, the Chicago Defender reported. Each card includes the individual’s backstory and the awards and accomplishments that they’ve made throughout their careers. Entrepreneur Thiah Veona Muhammad , who created the cards, believed it was important for children to see examples of Black wealth outside of the entertainment and sports industries. “I think it’s imperative that we, as Black people, know who our millionaires and billionaires are, more specifically those who are in business and are non-entertainers/athletes,” Muhammad said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “Showing them real examples of people who look like them, making millions in various industries will not only help them to identify themselves as people of greatness, but it will introduce them to industries that they likely have never been exposed to before, giving them more career choices.” Amongst the business moguls featured in the deck are Janice Bryant Howroyd and Pamela J. Booker . She hopes that parents and educators will use the cards as a tool to educate and empower Black youth. This isn’t the first educational tool that Muhammad has created for African American parents and children. In 2015 she released a book titled How to Raise Your Black Child to Be a Millionaire: Child-rearing Secrets of the Black Elite and she also launched a blog that features lessons about financial literacy and wealth creation that can be implemented in the household and the classroom. The company also has a Raising Black Millionaires podcast where Muhammad leads candid conversations with African American millionaires on how their parents helped guide them towards success. Many Black entrepreneurs have created educational products to empower the youth. African American inventor Elliott Eddie created The Entrepreneur Game to teach children what goes into running a business. B lack women are making historic moves in the realm of entrepreneurship. According to Atlanta Black Star , Dr. Venaya Jones recently opened the first veterinary clinic in Cleveland to be owned and operated by an African American woman. The facility offers a wide spectrum of services including diagnostic exams, dermatology, wellness visits, and hospice care. Dr. Jones—who discovered her passion for helping animals at a young age—says she wants to utilize the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic as an avenue to push animal health care forward and establish the clinic as a go-to veterinary facility in Cleveland. “I feel like it’s a great opportunity here in Cleveland, especially there being no other vet hospitals here,” she said in a statement. “There are tons of people with pets, we’re in the health tech corridor. I mean, this is where quality medicine is discovered and done, and I want to be a part of that.” For the Western University College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, opening up the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic was about more than her passion for animal health care; its about representation. Dr. Jones hopes her journey will inspire Black youth to pursue careers in veterinary medicine. She mentors youth and other women of color who are interested in stepping into the field. “I’m hoping to uplift the community both physically and emotionally, health wise by taking care of their pets, but … also bringing a sense of pride and a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “I want to be able to show other [young minorities] that they can do it, anything that they dream of, because here is a Black woman that’s come into this community and made it happen.” Black entrepreneurs are breaking barriers in the medical field. Earlier this year a group of African American medical professionals joined forces to open up Chicago’s only Black-owned urgent care facility . After caping for the likes of Donald Trump and disrespecting Auntie Maxine Waters , it didn’t surprise anyone that social media had a field day this past Sunday when Clueless star Stacey Dash found herself rocking some stylish steel bracelets on her way to central bookings for domestic battery. What is indeed surprising though is that in Dash’s arrest file her ethnicity was listed as, wait for it, “white.” Huh?! TMZ is reporting that the controversial actress who is the product of a Black father and Mexican mother was jotted down as a white woman on her arrest report because, well, the officer thought she was Hispanic. Yup, we don’t get it either. And while most people were quick to believe that Dash herself stated she was Caucasian, it was the officers at the department that decided to label her a “W.” A spokesperson for the Pasco Sheriff’s Department tells us, “Stacey Dash was never asked her race by the arresting deputy, nor did she volunteer any information about her race. The arresting deputy assumed that she was Hispanic.” Unfortunately, police computers do not have a “Hispanic” option when it comes time to fill out these reports even though Hispanics make up 15% of the population in Pasco County. So they decided to list her as “White” because, well, we don’t know. They could’ve just as easily gone with her actual half-race of “Black” but whatever. Still though, no tears shall be shed for Stacey Dash whether White, Black or Hispanic. Maybe Asian, we don’t know.
