Mackenzie McKee is now 24 years old. Her mom, who is finally done with chemo as of only a few weeks ago, took to Facebook to wish her the happiest of birthdays. Angie does acknowledge that Mackenzie is kind of a disaster, but writes that she loves her “hot mess” of a daughter. If you’re familiar with Angie Douthit’s social media habits, we don’t have to tell you that she begins her post with a bible verse. “Ephesians 3:20,” she quotes. “‘Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.'” “HAPPY BIRTHDAY MACKENZIE!” Angie gushes. “24 looks good on you!” “Yes,” Angie writes. “My baby is 24.” “Mackenzie and I both wish we could say it’s been an easy 24 years,” she says. “But,” Angie acknowledges. “She will tell you that she was proudly my biggest challenge in life.” “You take ADHD, type 1 diabetes, anxiety, ODD, horm onal issues, and put them all together in one tiny body and you’ve got one hot mess,” Angie says. “But,” she continues. “I’m so thankful for my hot mess.” “She changed me in a mighty way,” she affirms. Though everyone wants to be the best parent possible before having children, a lot of life lessons come while one is already a parent. “I learned to be patient,” Angie explains. “And to pick and choose my battles.” She adds: “I learned to truly love unconditionally.” “I learned to pray, pray, pray. I learned that not everything is the parents’ fault,” she says. “I also realized how incredibly talented and determined she was,” Angie writes. “Her stubbornness paid off and she is very successful today.” Angie praises: “Inside her was many abilities that have shown forth through the years.” “We are very close,” Angie affirms. She then reveals: “She calls me for advice every day and we have a lot of things in common.” “She taught me a lot about God,” Angie notes. She says that she has learned that “God always loves us, no matter how rude we are or if we just blamed him for everything.” “His love never wavers,” she continues. “God always forgives and moves on. He doesn’t dwell on the past.” “God looks at our gifts and talents inside all of us,” Angie affirms. “And,” she says. “No matter how undisciplined we seem on the outside, he sees a future butterfly about to sprout wings and fly.” “God always points us to the positive instead of the negative,” Angie says. “Yes,” she continues. “I’m a much better mother and teacher because of my stubborn, yet very fun, and talented Mickie.” “Today,” she reflects. “I’m very thankful for 24 years with my baby girl. I love you Mic!” “I asked her what she wanted for her bday,” Angie shares. “She said, ‘I just want a day with my mom and my sisters.'” “So we are all going to be together today,” she reveals. “What an incredible blessing.” Some people end up growing up to be closer with their parents — or one parent — than they ever were as children. He warned Florida voters, less than 24-hours after winning the GOP nomination in August, not to “ monkey this up ” by electing Gillum. A closer look at his background revealed that DeSantis has a long racist history . Gillum wants to debate the merits of his progressive agenda for the state, which includes his proposals to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, increase starting teacher pay to $50,000, expand Medicaid and ending the state’s infamous “stand your ground” law. DeSantis, if he decides to debate the issues, is expected to counter that Gillum would be fiscally irresponsible, weak on crime, and too open to immigration as governor—basically touting Trump’s “make American great again” agenda. Expect DeSantis also to accuse Gillum of corruption. Federal investigators are looking into whether businessmen were able to influence Tallahassee development projects. Gillum has said the FBI told him he’s not the focus of its investigation. However, the mayor reportedly took expensive trips that his political enemies believe were paid for by lobbyists. Gillum has reportedly presented receipts for those trips, and he’s cooperating fully with the investigation. Meanwhile, Trump has been lobbed attacks at Gillum on DeSantis’ behalf. His latest philanthropic project will provide the homeless population in Oakland and Seattle with smartphones, AfroTech reported. Through the project, 3,000 homeless people on the West Coast will receive smartphones and three months of free service. Each phone will come equipped with the Beast Mobile app which allows users to receive credits for playing games, participating in surveys and watching videos. Beast Mobile and Fam1st Family Foundation launched this project in efforts to examine the habits and whereabouts of individuals who are homeless so that they can better serve that population. They also hope that through this project those who receive the phones will be able to stay in touch with their loved ones and access the internet for resources. “There is a myth out there that homeless people already get phones from the Government. To qualify for a phone you must already receive some type of assistance like food stamps or Medicare/Medicaid. Also you need to have a home address which homeless people do not have,” read the initiative’s website . “With Seattle having the 3rd largest homeless population in the U.S. and Oakland (and the Bay Area) having the 4th largest, Beast Mobile and Fam1st Family Foundation are committed to providing a solution to help city officials communicate with this previously untrackable demographic.” Phones for the Homeless is currently working towards raising $250,000 to provide individuals with three months of free service. Bright Corporation has pledged to donate 3,000 phones. Homelessness has been a pressing issue in our country. A recent study revealed that Black Americans are about three times more likely to live on the streets than white Americans. B lack women are making moves in the realm of entrepreneurship. Many of their ventures are designed to give back to individuals from disenfranchised groups. Two Black women in Tulsa are aiming to level the property ownership playing field through the creation of their own real estate company, Forbes reported. Paye , Esq. and Ernestine Johnson are the women behind the first Black-owned real estate crowdfunding company, the news outlet writes. Dubbed the Tulsa Real Estate Fund (TREF), the platform was created to help individuals in underserved communities overcome the obstacles of gentrification by helping them make low-cost real estate investments. Those who take advantage of the fund can invest in property for less than $1,000. The two were motivated to start their venture after doing research about the racial wealth gap and the ravaging affects of gentrification. Hearing the stories about people who were pushed out of their neighborhoods because they couldn’t afford to stay there and realizing that there was a lack of resources offered to low-income individuals related to property ownership prompted them to take action. “I said to myself, ‘I have to use my art and my voice to financially empower low-income, underserved, and urban communities,” said Johnson, who serves as the co-founder and chief communications officer of TREF. Paye, who serves as the company’s vice president of business affairs, says that her personal experiences motivated her to make a change. “My parents struggled and sacrificed to become homeowners. Now I see the pride they have in their home,” Paye told Forbes. “Also, as an attorney, I have facilitated numerous real estate transactions for first-time homebuyers. I have seen the power of real estate to transform people’s lives.” There are several initiatives that have been launched to give individuals a seat at the table when it comes to the redevelopment of their communities. Last year, the Entrepreneurs of Color Fund —which was specifically designed to give Black entrepreneurs access to capital—grew to $18 million. G eorgia is one of the reddest states on the political map, yet Democratic nominee for governor Stacey Abrams is running neck-and-neck against her GOP rival in the polls. Kemp’s 1 percentage point lead is statistically insignificant. That poll reinforced results reported on Oct. 11 from an Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Channel 2 Action News survey that also found a 1 percent lead for Kemp. The race is stunningly close in a state that last elected a Democrat ( Roy Barnes ) for governor in 1998. If Abrams wins, she will become the nation’s first African-American woman governor. Both U.S. senators from Georgia are GOP members, and the state gave its electoral votes in 2016 to President Donald Trump . Despite all the madness coming from the White House, around 50 percent of Georgia voters still approve of the president’s job performance, the Ipsos poll showed. Yet Abrams is making headway in a historic bid for governor. Part of the reason is the demographic changes taking place across the state, according to Fox News . Metro Atlanta’s nonwhite population almost doubled from 1970 to 2015, and those minority voters largely support Democrats. At the same time, Georgia has seen a record number of people register to vote for the midterm election. No wonder Kemp, who oversees elections in Georgia as secretary of state, is trying every trick in the book to suppress minority voters from participating in November. His efforts include an attempt to block 53,000 voter registration applications —about 70 percent of whom were African-Americans. No matter how far they wander.” He’s also got a over a billion views on Facebook and Youtube. Needless to say, he was a shoe-in for the award and now he’s gone viral yet again for what he had to say as he got up on that stage to accept the honor. After thanking Black Enterprise, he told the crowd: “That word ‘influencer’ is interesting to me because it’s like we’re influencing people to do what, right? A lot of people call themselves ‘social media influencers’ but you’re influencing people to do what? Is it to reach a level of beauty that is not attainable naturally? Is it to have people lust after cars or material objects that will never bring somebody true happiness?” He continued, “When you get pulled over and you’re drunk they say ‘you’re under the influence.’ A lot of people are intoxicated by what these influencers put out there. When you get sick what do they say? ‘You’ve come down with influenza.’ A lot of people are ill because of what what these influencers put out there. So I just have one question for every influencer, because we’re all influencers, and that question is: when people come to your page, do they walk away better or worse?” It was an incredible point to make. “I have chills from his words. He was… In front of the Majestic hotel in Detroit; we used to call him ‘Detroit Red.’ [He] had his Italian suits on – that’s why when Spike Lee did Malcolm X, I said, ‘Malcolm couldn’t walk around the Blue Zoot’s marching down the street, he’s a dope dealer.’ He [Ray Charles] got me hooked for five months, at 15. After we’d finish the Washington Social club and a couple of other ones, we’d all go down to Jackson street to the Elks club. When they’d finish playing, everybody would go into a corner, Ray would let me get in the corner, and they had it on their thumb. Your music can never be more or less than you are as a human being, so you start to work on the human being.” Jones currently has a documentary on Netflix and fans love the fact that he continues to share stories from the past.
