Megyn Kelly Gets Roasted by NBC Colleagues for Racist Comments

Megyn Kelly just reminded the world that she doesn't know how to google the answers to simple questions. Instead, she asks them on live television. After a massive backlash,  Megyn is super sorry about defending blackface  and seems to actually understand the topic. But despite her apology, it looks like she's still not off the hook — even with her own colleagues at NBC. News anchors are supposed to report and discuss the news. In general, they really should not be  making  the news. But that's what Megyn did, in the worst way, when she  defended blackface Halloween costumes  in a discussion with an all-white panel. She has apologized and explained how the backlash opened her eyes, and NBC's Today had a group of her own collegues discuss the controersy. Morgan Radford participated in the discussion along with Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Craig Melvin. Al Roker says that her internal email is not a sufficient way of saying that she's sorry. “The fact is,” Roker says. “While she apologized to the staff, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country.” Roker explains how, as a black man, this is very personal to him. “This is history going back to the 1830s minstrel shows to demean and to denigrate a race,” Roker says. “It was not right.” “I am old enough to have lived through Amos ‘n’ Andy, where you had people in blackface playing two black characters, magnifying the worst stereotypes about black men.” He refers to nightmarish caricatures of black men, performed by white men, that were used as weapons to ridicule real black people. “And that,” he explains. “Is what the problem is. That is what the issue is.” Craig Melvin doesn't mince words when he talks about Megyn's segment. He calls her defense of blackface both “stupid” and “indenfensible.” There are people in this world who might understandably not realize the historical implications of blackface. A millionaire television anchor who can and should read up on any controversial topics that she plans to address on television has no such excuse. Melvin also points out the fact that Jim Crow laws are named for a blackface minstrel character, a fact we mentioned recently when  discussing whiteface . Despite reports of an alleged feud, Savannah Guthrie clearly felt uneasy about throwing a colleague under the bus. “It is uncomfortable, obviously,” Guthrie says. “Because Megyn is a colleague at NBC News.” But it is that working relationship that made it so vital for NBC to have a panel discuss Megyn's controversial remarks. For the public, it's about education and illumination of an important topic. For NBC, and we don't mean to sound cynical, it's about making it clear that the organization as a whole does not defend blackface. Roker and Melvin both made excellent points, which you can see and hear in the video that we've attached. But it was Morgan Radford who arguably put the best spin on this situation. She acknowledged the historical weight of blackface while also presenting Megyn's words as a “learning moment.” Megyn, Radford says, “really gifted us the opportunity to have this conversation and a public discourse.” “We now have the courage and we have the platform to have conversations like this,” Radford notes. She says that these talks are important “even when they’re uncomfortable because we can see they’re still necessary.” It probably does not help that Megyn Kelly has a history of making wildly controversial remarks about race. She made these comments primarily while working at Fox News, where white nationalists like Tucker Carlson thrive. Megyn may be best known for having claimed that Santa Claus, a fictional character based upon a Turkish man, is white. As if she had met him. She also claimed that Jesus, a Middle Eastern Jewish man, was a white man. Her suggestion that blackface was acceptable when she was growing up — in the 1970s — dredged all of that back up. But, as we said, Megyn did apologize, first in an email to colleagues and then to her viewers. “The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep,” Megyn acknowledges. “I’ve never been a ‘pc’ kind of person,” she says. “But I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age.” In general, labels like  politically correct  are useless, and hurled around by people who want to dismiss any struggles that are not their own. It appears that Megyn is learning a little more about the world. We wish that she, as the highest paid television anchor on the planet despite her ratings, would actively educate herself  before  getting backlash.

Ronnie Magro: Attacked By Jen Harley AGAIN?!

We regret to inform you that the tumultuous relationship between Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Jen Harley is still a thing. And it seems to be getting more dangerous and destructive with each passing week. Ronnie posted the above photo to his Instagram story moments ago, and it seems he’s implying that Harley once again physically assaulted him: “Sorry for lying to my friends and family,” Magro wrote on the pic. “Sometimes u love people so much [you’re] willing to lie and the hurt the people that love u the most to protect.” He tagged the pic @JenX, and while that’s not Harley’s Instagram handle, the message Ronnie seems to be sending is still pretty clear. Sadly, this has been an ongoing pattern in Ronnie and Jen’s relationship. The drama first came to a head back in June, when Jen dragged Ronnie with her car , a situation that was documented on recent episodes of Jersey Shore Family Vacation . It’s a frightening situation, but the good news is that Ronnie and Jen’s latest posts seem to indicate that they’ve finally called it quits. “Closure is a scam. Don’t text, don’t care. Just move on,” Ronnie posted on Instagram on Tuesday. For her part, Harley unleashed on Ron in reaction to a follower’s question about her relationship: “He’s lying,” Jen wrote. “I’ll prove it again, along with the car thing. I can’t deal with a drug addict anymore. It’s getting so out of control.” Hilariously, just days ago, Jen was reportedly griping to friends about how angry she is over Ron’s friends and their refusal to approve of his relationship: “Jen is really hurt that people aren’t being supportive of her and Ronnie,” a source told Hollywood Life. “There are times when she feels like everyone is against her and Ronnie and they are trying to tear away their happiness, just waiting for them to fail. It breaks her heart.” The insider went on to describe how hurt Jen is by the continued skepticism of Ron’s Shore housemates: “If she and Ronnie were fighting all the time she would understand all the negativity, but she swears they’re doing really well and are more in love than they’ve ever been,” says the tipster. “Nothing is perfect — they still have arguments — but nothing out of the normal because they’re both working on it. “They are doing therapy together and are really committed to working out their issues, because they want their daughter to grow up in a happy home.” The source went on to describe exactly why Ronnie’s castmates are so concerned: “Everybody’s worried things will spiral out of control before they finally decide they’re over for good,” the insider says. Well, they weren’t wrong about that one. Fortunately, the relationship is now over and Ronnie’s loved ones can breathe easy. Until he and Jen inevitably get back together next week, of course. Watch The Andrew Gillum And Ron DeSantis Florida Governor Debate Rematch Online: How To Live Stream

A ndrew Gillum was fighting off “smear tactics” and said he was ready to talk about the “issues” in the hours ahead of his Florida gubernatorial debate rematch against Republican Ron DeSantis on Wednesday night in West Palm Beach. READ MORE: 5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Masterful Debate Dismantling Of Ron DeSantis The Tallahassee mayor and Democratic nominee who could become the state’s first Black governor’s comments came in a tweet Wednesday morning that was likely in reference to the onslaught of Republican- and white nationalist-funded efforts like this week’s racist robocalls to voters. My opponent is trying to do everything he can to distract & use smear tactics—but the second debate is tonight & here’s what I’ll be ready to talk about: issues that Floridians care about. I’m running for governor to represent all of them & no distractions can change that. — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 Some of that negative attention has included  allegations of corruption against Gillum, who has been accused of inappropriately accepting free tickets to see a Broadway play in New York City in 2016. Gillum has denied the accusations and there have never been any criminal charges over the allegations. Still, debate viewers can expect for that topic to dominate the rematch early on considering the resurgence of the topic in the media. Another surefire bet for the debate is the topic of racism, something that has been steadily streaming out of DeSantis’ campaign since Gillum won the Democratic primary in August. The day after Gillum’s victory, DeSantis made it a point toll Florida voters not to “monkey up” the election by electing a Democrat (who happened to be Black). More apparent  proof that DeSantis is at the very least a white supremacy sympathizer has been leaking along the way, culminating on Monday with a fresh round of racist robocalls that featured monkey sounds in the background. Even still, with all of that background noise trying to drown out the very loud racism associated with DeSantis, it would seem that Floridians remained more concerned with those same “issues” Gillum said he was ready to talk about in Wednesday’s debate than the conveniently timed political “distractions” that routinely come up in campaigns with national implications. As of Wednesday, the mayor was polling nearly 6 percentage points ahead of DeSantis, who exposed himself during the first debate Sunday as being more worried about attacking Gillum than with policy. Forget the polls — I don’t care about them. When we vote, we win! I’m ready for all of us to #BringItHome , Florida. pic.twitter.com/Mi2PqC0OH0 — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 The second debate starts at 7 p.m. EDT and will be filmed on the campus of Broward College. It will be televised live across the state. Want to watch the debate but don’t live in Florida? Click here to live stream the debate via the WPBF website for the local ABC affiliate. If you happen to miss it live, you can watch it on CSPAN’s website at 10 p.m. EDT Wednesday night by clicking here . Leaked Audio: Brian Kemp Caught Expressing Concern About “Unprecedented” Voter Turnout In Favor Of Stacey Abrams

Image via Jessica McGowan/Getty Images Brian Kemp Talks Absentee Ballots In Leaked Audio If you’ve been paying attention to what’s happening in the upcoming midterm election, you know that Georgia’s incumbent Secretary of State Brian Kemp has been under HEAVY scrutiny for his seemingly shady practice of suppressing the vote for over 53,000 people, 70% of which are African-American. As Secretary of State Kemp is responsible for running the elections and that potential conflict of interest has raised LOTS of eyebrows not only in Georgia but nationwide. According to Rolling Stone , those suspicions have only been heightened with the leak of an audio recording of Kemp making some dubious comments about his opponent Stacey Abrams’ ability to garner support via absentee ballots. “They have just an unprecedented number of that,” he said, “which is something that continues to concern us, especially if everybody uses and exercises their right to vote — which they absolutely can — and mail those ballots in, we gotta have heavy turnout to offset that.” Peep what else Kemp had to say below. NOVEMBER 6! GO VOTE! VOTE EVERYWHERE, BUT ESPECIALLY IN STATES LIKE GEORGIA WHERE THE RACE IS ALMOST TIED AND THE OPPRESSOR IS WORKING OVERTIME TO STIFLE US!

Jocko Sims Addresses His “New Amsterdam” Character’s Decision Not To Swirl “What He Said Was Kind Of Racist”

Virginia Sherwood/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Jocko Sims Says His “New Amsterdam” Character Is Anti-Swirl But He’s Not If you’ve been missing out on NBC’s new Tuesday night hospital drama “New Amsterdam” we’d like to suggest there’s no time like the present to catch up. Last week BOSSIP caught up with one of the stars of the show, Jocko Sims who plays heart surgeon Dr. Floyd Reynolds. Reynolds has a lot of chemistry with Dr. Lauren Bloom, played by actress Janet Montgomery, and while it’s clear the pair have a good thing going, Reynolds is reluctant to let their relationship move beyond the friends with benefits zone because he wants a black wife and a black family. BOSSIP: What did you think when you read about the swirl situation in the script? Jocko Sims: This was our goal, just to get people talking. That’s what was refreshing to me, that it sparked a conversation. When I first saw it I was a little nervous, because first of all what he said was racist. Flip it. Think about it if the roles were reversed. A white guy and Black girl and they’re having sexual relations and she asks if they can take things further and he says “Well, I can’t because you’re not white.” BOSSIP: But that happens all the time, especially if one party or the other is a certain religion. Like you will find that if you’re dating a Jewish person or another religion. JS: But is that racist? Speaking of Jewish, We showed this that a hospital and one guy was really concerned because he felt like if the tables were turned it would be wrong. My concern, I really try to look at things from multiple perspectives, whether it concerns race or not when I’m looking at characters. I was thinking he is going to offend people on both sides. Like I got hit up by Black women and they’re like “Whoo, that’s right!”, then I got hit up today at the airport like ‘What are you doing? Don’t be using us as an excuse… Da da da da da, you not really down.’ Bottom line again, we’re talking about it again in this country, we’re talking and that’s what we wanted. You’ve got your Turkish families, who are like “I want you to marry a nice Turkish… ” It’s interesting because I’ve been in that position. I’ve dated different races. I’ve had my mom’s voice in the back of my head. The only issue I had was maybe I wasn’t able to come to terms with why I didn’t wanna take “Susie” — I just made up a name — home, but I would be afraid of it. I sympathize with Reynolds because, yeah, he’s been there. HE’s going where I have been I’ve never been compelled to tell someone ‘Hey you’re good enough for — but yeah you can’t come home and meet Mom.’ That was a little bit unrealistic for me but everybody generally is loving it. Someone asked me what I would want for the future generations and all I would ask that we just be able to sit down and listen to one another and have a conversation. For folks, before they talk to listen. The dialogue is worth having. BOSSIP: So is this going to be something that we’ll continue to see because he did offer her a drink after that conversation. Does she go back to his apartment? JS: A few people have been confused by that. I think that was kind of unclear, because he asked her if she wanted a drink literally right after she almost died, so she was like ‘Right now?’ because you know ‘get a drink’ usually meant… But in this case he was literally asking her if she wanted a glass of scotch to relax, he wasn’t asking her for more sex. Will there be more? You know I can’t tell you that. Everybody on Twitter is like “You know they’re going to … ” That’s what I would expect too. Tune in to NBC at 10PM EST to watch Jocko Sims and the rest of his “New Amsterdam” cast.

Niecy Nash Stars In Hilarious Satire About A Hotline For Racists

Read the original here:

Source: Amanda Edwards / Getty In conjunction with the New York Times, Niecy Nash stars in a hilarious sendup of the recent rash of white people calling the police on Black folks for doing the absolute least. It is part of a brilliant op-ed piece that illustrates, with humor, how harmful and dangerous the action is to people of color. From the Times : In this satirical infomercial, the comedian and actress Niecy Nash plays the inventor of a new hotline, 1-844-WYT-FEAR. The video advertises a phone service for white people to call when they can’t cope with black people living their lives near them. The hotline is up and running, so give it a ring and spread the word. (Seriously.) The phenomenon of white people harassing African-Americans going about their day is nothing new, but with the ubiquity of smartphones and social media, everyone can now see how these injustices are played out and lead to anxiety for and material harm to people of color. And this problem is bigger than a few unreasonable white people. Racist stereotypes are baked into our society. Check out the spoof video below. — Photo: WENN

Details Of Botham Jean’s Family Lawsuit Against Dallas Are Revealed

T he family of the Black man who was killed by a police officer in his own Dallas apartment last month still has plans to sue the city, according to a new report. Botham Jean ’s family announced their intentions earlier this month to sue Dallas for civil rights violations, but the lawsuit was seemingly in limbo last week after Jean’s mother said some questions she had were being answered by officials. Lawyers representing the family revealed details of the pending lawsuit on Monday, showing exactly what Jean’s parents were hoping to accomplish with it. “Jean’s parents say they want their lawsuit to not just focus on how their son died, but to change how police officers are trained about when to fire their weapons,” the Dallas Morning News reported Monday afternoon. Are police departments really investigating the cops who killed Botham Jean and O'Shae Terry? A pattern emerges… https://t.co/ytvCIdZylc pic.twitter.com/weG5wpTOU9 — NewsOne (@newsone) October 10, 2018 Part of the lawsuit will also focus on what Jean’s family has described as incompetence on the part of law enforcement, including Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson , who reportedly assured the family that the case was progressing. Johnson, who was appointed DA nearly two years ago, was running to be elected to the post next month and has at times  seemed more concerned with her campaign than Jean’s killing. “The Jeans also fault [Dallas Police Chief U. Reneé] Hall for turning over the case to the Rangers and say Dallas police should have kept investigating,” Dallas Morning News also reported. “Hall has said she turned over the case in an effort to be more transparent.” However, Hall, at one point in the weeks after the shooting, told reporters that she was “prohibited” from firing Amber Guyger , the officer who killed Jean. Less than a week later, Guyger was fired. There’s also the issue of the criminal charge Guyger was facing. She was charged with manslaughter , but that could be changed to murder depending on what a grand jury decides. However, it was unclear when, or if, a grand jury would ever convene. It’s been nearly seven weeks since Guyger entered Jean’s apartment and killed him on Sept. 6, implausibly confusing her rental unit for his and purportedly suspecting he was an intruder in her home. Local law enforcement has been accused of helping Guyger coverup her crime , allowing her to avoid criminal charges and remain free nearly three days following the shooting before she turned herself in and was arrested. She was finally fired nearly three weeks after she killed Jean. Her toxicology report has also not been released even though she reportedly submitted to a test the night of the shooting. Where is Amber Guyger’s toxicology report? Questions about Botham Jean’s killer mount as she is given plenty of time to prepare her defense. https://t.co/XykjC85iuy pic.twitter.com/KHQVQkzet2 — NewsOne (@newsone) October 8, 2018 Jean family attorney Lee Merritt told journalist Jordan Chariton last week that Guyger was also given time to delete all of her social media accounts, except for her Pinterest account which “bragged about being violent, being short tempered. She bragged about use of force and she spoke out adamantly against things like kneeling [during the anthem] and said the NFL died of ‘Colin’ [Kaeprnick] cancer.” SEE ALSO: Dallas DA Accused Of Bungling Botham Jean Case Gets Major Endorsement For Election Where Is Amber Guyger’s Toxicology Report?
