I t started out as just another viral video: A white woman named Alison Ettel saw Jordan Rodgers, an African-American girl, selling water near AT&T Park in San Francisco. Rodgers was trying to earn money for a trip to Disneyland. Ettel was caught on camera calling 911 and the video was soon spread across social media. A meme was born . Alison Ettel, CEO of weed dispensary Treatwell Tinctures, calls the police on an 8-year-old girl for selling water. She profits from a drug that put so many people of color behind bars, yet still tries to harm a little black girl. Again, her face was plastered on every social media outlet, photoshopped in different scenarios and even parodied on SNL. She was given the moniker of BBQ Becky . At first, the seemingly weekly moments and memes doubled as mindless comedy combined with ways to shame the white women for their racism. But it’s time to stop it. Because, in the end, these nicknames and memes are only shielding white women from real consequences they should get for putting Black lives in danger. Black men and women have 6.6 to 1 odds of being killed by police while unarmed. Police are more likely to use excessive force on Black people. And so on. So it’s clear that calling the police on a Black person is effectively putting that Black person’s life in danger. Everyone knows this, including the white people who erroneously call police on Black folks. White people who call the police on Black folks don’t just want us removed from their sidewalks or their parks or their cookouts or their neighborhoods. They want us dead. And they know that calling the police on us is going to heighten their chances of those dreams coming to fruition. Take, for instance, the story of Jeremiah Harvey. He was in a New York corner store when his backpack brushed up against a white woman named Teresa Klein. She called the police claiming that the boy groped her. She’s been given the nickname “ Cornerstore Caroline .” How adorable. The problem here is that Harvey calling the police for believing a boy groped her recalls the infamous case of Emmett Till , a boy accused of whistling at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham . She alerted a mob of white men — not that far off from a modern-day police force, depending on whom you ask — who went on to lynch Till. Klein was engaging in a tried and true American tradition of using stereotypes of over-sexualized Black men to aid in the deaths of said Black men. This isn’t an act that should just garner alliterative nicknames and social media memes because that’s letting these perpetrators off the hook. Here’s a question? Without scrolling up, do you even remember Permit Patty’s real name? What about Cornerstone Caroline? Barbecue Becky? Giving them nicknames is providing aliases that cover the names of real women with real racist motivations to commit real harm to real Black people. America has functioned under the premise that white women are innately innocent and harmless in the history of anti-Black violence despite overwhelming historical and present-day evidence to the contrary. Guarding women with nicknames and comedy will surely embarrass them in the short-term, and, in the case of Ettel, she stepped down from her post as a CEO. But do you think she has gone un-hired since? What true recourse has she seen? What true contrition has she been forced to show? If there aren’t going to be laws that penalize these people for their calls — something I’m skeptical of, as such a law would be asking police to side with an innocent Black person over a white person, which doesn’t usually garner great outcomes for us — then we have to find ways to hold these white people accountable. So, yes, say their real names as often as possible. Make the world know that anyone who hires them or does business with them is choosing to engage with someone with a clear disregard for Black lives. Whatever you do, leave the cute nicknames for situations that are actually funny, because there’s never any comedy involved when Black boys and girls get police called on them. V ermont’s only Black female lawmaker revealing the reason why she left office may spark more conversations in coming weeks. She also emphasized white supremacy and “toxic political discourse” as severe issues in the state. However, those who sought to push Morris out of office couldn’t undo what she had done: pushing legislation extending free contraceptive coverage to residents, working to control pollution and “address racial and income disparities in the education and the criminal justice systems.” Morris feels that she has taken her life back with vacating the office after such turbulence. She believes that people should not be blamed for putting their safety or their families’ safety first by leaving high-profile political offices that can bring terror to their lives. As several other Black women move forward with running for various offices nationwide, Morris’ experience offers a cautionary tale—or more motivation for them to fight against racism. A s the nation mourned the passing of Microsoft co-founder and NFL and NBA franchise owner Paul Allen , family, friends and fans were sharing memories of his life, including his relationships with African-Americans. Allen, who died from complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Seattle on Monday afternoon, was 65 years old. Known for his work to innovate technology and with Vulcan, his network of philanthropic organizations and efforts, the billionaire philanthropist was also the owner of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and NBA’s Portland Trailblazers. Because of the two sports teams, Allen had many interactions with African-American athletes, including Colin Kaepernick , whose case accusing NFL ownership of colluding to keep him from playing has moved forward in court. Allen also was applauded for investing in cultural institutions in Seattle and revitalizing parts of the city . However, some social media users emphasized that the major developments had opened the door for gentrifying Seattle, a practice known as a factor in driving African Americans out of certain neighborhoods. P hiladelphia’s police commissioner, who’s Black, rejected a report released on Monday that said police racial bias was instrumental in the controversial arrest of two Black men at Starbucks in April. However, many studies point to implicit bias as an ongoing policing problem. SEE ALSO: Starbucks Incident Prompts Philadelphia Police Department To Finally Try De-escalation In Trespass Cases The Police Advisory Commission, comprised of a citizen oversight board, urged police officials to improve officer implicit bias training, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. “The goal for us was to help everyone understand that issues can be nuanced and tinged with race, or affected by race and racism, and the Police Department, often, is the person at the front lines of all of our issues,” said Hans Menos , executive director of the commission. That didn’t go over well with Philadelphia Commission Richard Ross , who pointed out in a statement that his department bans racially biased policing. “We can agree that biases, whether implicit or explicit, may distort the fears and perception of some citizens who call the police to report crimes,” he stated, shifting the blame to citizens who call the police for help. When they refused to leave, a store manager called the police, who led them out of the store in handcuffs. No charges were filed, and Starbucks profusely apologized for the incident. Starbucks also closed its stores in May for an afternoon of employee anti-bias training. Studies have determined that suspicion and fear of Black men underpin police brutality and make for disproportionate arrests. Unconsciously, white people perceive Black men as larger and more threatening than white men of the same build, according to the American Psychological Association . Stereotypes of Black men as habitual criminals and dangerous people are reinforced through the media, the American Bar Association said. A national survey found that whites overestimated the percentage of Blacks involved in burglaries, drug sales and juvenile crime by up to 30 percent. Police officers bring those attitudes with them, often unconsciously, when policing Black communities. Police departments across the nation are struggling to help their officers eliminate their bias. Image via Cheryl Maeder/Getty Mrs. America Contestants Say Pageant CEO David Marmel Is Racist Several Black women who competed in the Mrs. America (not “Miss”, different gig) pageant this year are charging the CEO/President David Marmel with making racist remarks including blaming Ebony Magazine for his frequent use of the n-word. According to CNN , three of these women, Kimberly Phillips, 2018 Delaware state titleholder, Missouri’s Brandy Palacios and 2018 New Jersey titleholder Crissy Timpson have hired lawyer Gloria Allred to represent them in their plea for a public apology, not a lawsuit. “At that point, Mr. Marmel asked if he could be frank with us,” Phillips said. He launched into a story about a black man he knew who grew up in the projects and chose school over drugs and gangs, and went on to become Marmel’s friend and attorney, Phillips said. “He (Marmel) then said that it is not the 1960s anymore and black people can’t rely on the government for assistance. He also stated that all black women need to stop having babies — with four baby daddies — and all black men are in jail because they need to stop selling drugs and killing each other,” Phillips said. Marmel, in cliche fashion, claims that his comments were “taken out of context”. However, he was witnessed making other remarks that make it pretty clear how he feels about Black folks. Kimberly Phillips recounts this part of Marmel’s racist azz conversation: “At that point, Mr. Marmel asked if he could be frank with us,” Phillips said. But we digress… Bottom line is, these women want to make sure that Marmel is never allowed to speak to other Mrs. America contestants like this ever again. We can only hope that he’s removed from his position by someone who has the moral compass to give a damn.
