For Black People, Voting Is Just The Beginning Of The Work

Read this article:

B arack Obama took the stage for his farewell speech mere days after Donald Trump had been elected president of the United States in 2016. The 44th president tried his best to instill hope and faith in his followers who had been dealt a blow of fear and despair. He spoke about civil action and voicing our concerns when the government fails us. At one point, when Obama mentioned the future President Donald Trump, members of the crowd started to boo. His response was short, off-the-cuff and enlightening about the outgoing president’s ideals: “Don’t boo, vote.” This has been Obama’s doctrine for more than a decade, and to be fair, a go-to one-stop solution offered up mostly to minority populations as the ways to initiate change in America. This isn’t new. One of the pillars of the civil rights movement was making sure that African-Americans could secure the right to vote. An incalculable amount of men and women died for that right to cast ballots in elections. My father risked his life fighting for voting rights. I understand the vast importance of the changes that can occur in America if people have a passion for voting. But I also understand that acting like voting is the final solution to the problems poisoning America is an oversimplified dismissal of what Black people have had to endure to simply survive. READ MORE:  Here’s What Millennials Think About Voting For A Black Candidate Having faith in voting is, in effect, having faith in the fairness of America’s so-called democracy. And having faith in America’s so-called democracy is an act of naïveté and self-sabotage. American politics doesn’t act on fairness. It never has, and as soon as Black people secured the right to vote, the country worked overtime to find ways to take those rights away, either by stripping that right via mass incarceration or straight-up changing rules to nullify the impacts of Black votes. In short, the war against Black voting rights never ended and the weeks and days leading up to the 2018 midterms is a testament to how much this country – namely the GOP – wants to make Black voting ineffective. In Georgia, for instance, Republican Secretary Of State and GOP candidate for governor, Brian Kemp, has purged 53,000 names from voter registration lists – more than 70 percent of those were African-American despite the fact the state is a little more than 30 percent Black. Since 2014, the state has shut down 214 polling places, mostly in predominately Black counties. Florida is suppressing more than half a million voters . A study from the Brennan Center For Justice found that New York, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida have engaged in illegal purges, while Arizona, Alabama, Maine and Indiana have put rules on the books that violate the Civil Rights Act in order to suppress votes. Officials at polling places no longer have to make potential voters ask how many bubbles are on a bar of soap anymore as policies achieving the same purpose are now baked into official laws across the country. But what happens if we do actually get to cast a ballot on Election Day? American policy has failsafes in place to minimize the impact of Black votes. The electoral college was instituted as a compromise to give southern states heightened voting power to account for their population of slaves. That same electoral college allowed the last two Republican presidential candidates to ascend to the White House despite the fact they didn’t win the popular vote. The Senate, which allocates two votes per state, dilutes popular votes, as well. By 2040 , two-thirds of the Senate will represent a mere 30 percent of the U.S. population. Think about this: Due to the population differences between Alaska and California and the fact they each still get the same amount of Senate representatives, a Senate vote in Alaska is worth more than 50 times a vote in California. READ MORE:  Kavanaugh Brings His Voter Suppression Record To A Court That Just Upheld A State’s ID Law Voting is a vastly important method of changing the country when we are dissatisfied with those in charge. However, the narrative around voting needs to change. Black people, for the most part, don’t pass on voting because they are lazy or complacent. Voting numbers are rarely if ever a reflection of how much Black people care. On the contrary, voting numbers are reflections of the continued effort to suppress Black people’s rights to have a say in what happens in regards to American policy. Every Black vote is a testament to perseverance and overcoming a system that doesn’t want us stepping foot in voting booths. Every missed Black vote is a reflection of the country succeeding in suppression. When Obama admonished to “don’t boo, vote,” he was displaying the faith he has in America – the same faith that got him elected and the same faith that kept him from believing Donald Trump could be president until it was too late. However, “just” voting isn’t enough. Don’t boo, vote. Don’t boo, resist. Don’t boo, march. Don’t boo, speak up. Don’t boo, live. This is how we survive in America. Author Addresses The Financial Impact Of Racial Bias

Read the original post:

T he Black community has felt the wrath of racial bias when trying to generate upward mobility in America. We’re hit hard by the ever-growing racial wealth gap where for every $100 in white family wealth, African Americans only hold $5.04. Many of us have also experienced the impact of institutionalized racism when applying for loans, seeking jobs, and trying to further our education. Shawn D. Rochester , financial literacy expert and author of the acclaimed book The Black Tax: The Cost of Being Black in America , is aiming to change the narrative about Black wealth by educating and empowering our communities. Rochester—who has dedicated his career to teaching disenfranchised groups how to progress financially—believes that overcoming the racial wealth gap starts with exposing individuals to the basics of financial literacy and circulating the Black dollar in Black communities. “We are missing 6 million jobs, 1.4 million businesses with staff and over $8 trillion of net worth in the Black Community. The Black Tax provides that understanding in a powerful and paradigm shifting, data-driven way and lays out an economic framework that we can use to address these massive gaps,” said Rochester in a statement. “We have spent far too much time focusing almost exclusively on civil and social issues, it is time to focus on economic advancement, business development and employment in our community specifically.” Rochester will delve into the impact of racism—both past and present—at an upcoming black economic empowerment breakfast hosted by the Harlem Business Alliance ; a non-profit organization focused on education, equity, and entrepreneurship. “When it comes to accumulating wealth in America, there has never been a level playing field for the Black Community. We are calling on community leaders, influencers and entrepreneurs to rally their base,” said Regina Smith , Executive Director, Harlem Business Alliance. “The systemic and institutionalized racism stemming from centuries of slavery and the Jim Crow era continues to have a devastating impact on our community.” The breakfast is slated to take place on October 17. There has been a major push to economically empower the Black community. Entrepreneur Sheena Allen , 29, launched an online banking platform called CapWay as an avenue to help underserved communities learn more about the importance of financial literacy. 5 Lit HBCU Dance Squads That Make Every Game Feel Like Homecoming

Read more:

Source: NurPhoto / Getty Tis’ the season to hit up your alma mater and turn up with your peers like you’re in undergrad all over again. Homecoming is one of the few times in your adult life where you get to experience the nostalgia of being a college student again — minus the classes and homework. The best part about homecoming, besides partying with old friends, is the halftime show at the football game.   Sure, most guys come to see their take home the W, but men and women alike come to see the dance squads do their thing. Especially when it comes to HBCU’s. The Majorette’s dance segment is like a party in itself. STINGETTES! STINGETTES! STINGETTES! These girls are not playing at the Magic City Classic this year! Slaying and giving us all type of BGM pic.twitter.com/v8RV3aE0oa — HBCU SpotlightTV (@HBCUSpotlightTV) October 28, 2017 The performances are so powerful and essential to the culture that even Beyoncé was inspired by whole experience  so much so that she based her entire Coachella, post-babies, comeback performance on it. Her J-Setting, prancing and stepping was all the way on point. One fan tweeted , “ @Beyonce gave us a HBCU homecoming performance, just so y’all know. I mean the whole homecoming. Step show. Band. Dance. Concert. I’m telling you. You better do your research and then enroll! You won’t regret it.” And unlike some stars who steal from the lesser known without any form of compensation, Bey gave away 100,000 worth of scholarships to HBCU students . Some fans even joked that the Queen Bey didn’t get to live out her dream of being the HBCU dance team captain because she had to be Beyoncé. Whether that’s facts or not, we don’t know —but what we do know is that the power of the HBCU band dancers is not to be underestimated. From the outfits, to the music selections to the flawless routines, band majorettes are and integral part of not only the Black college experience, but Black culture as a whole. In honor of Homecoming season, check out these five HBCU dance teams that get the crowd so lit, every game feels like Homecoming. Did your school make the cut?

Chrissy Teigen Big Fat Hard Nippled Tits of the Day

Fat Chrissy Teigen is pretty much banned from this site. Only because I don’t find her interesting or compelling… I did have a weird interraction with her a long time ago, where she praised the site for making her laugh…because guess what..the site is funny. Then a year later I went too far making fun of her, because what I’ve realized is that all these people have a breaking point, in some aspects they want everyone talking about them, but in other aspects of their fame leeching whore life, they want everyone talking nice, or soft teasing. They do not like dudes coming out calling them fat, this was pre-kids, calling them wallet fuckers who invested their pussy into the homosexual singer she has kids with, and knew that all she had to do was please that earner and she’d be fine… What I am sure she didn’t anticipate was that her twitter would go viral, people would think she’s a great voice for America, despite just being some fat tit, fat, ex bikini model who lives off some singer….and a career happened…. People think she’s real, truthful, but really she’s just a broken down misguided whore…. I celebrated her when she wanted to kill herself because I thought it was a good choice for her, but instead she ended up becoming relevant in pop culture for whatever fucking reason, giving whores everywhere hope that thy will matter too… Her big sloppy mom tits with no bra, on par with all the clickbait she’s produced over the years, should be banned from the site, but instead it’s my olive branch to mend our broken relationship…because I forgive her for being a cunt…but I can’t forgive her for this outfit with that body…you know because I remember her before she was fat…but always knew she’d grow into her tits as all busty asians do. Chanel West Coast Bike Short Twerk of the Day

Chanel West Coast is so beat… I don’t even really know who Chanel West Coast is… I mean I know all about her, but only because she’s been consistently putting out smutty content since getting a weird fanbase from being on Rob Dyrdek’s show… It’s like she claims to be a rapper or singer, but as far as I’m concerned she’s just some too old to not be famous as a rapper yet, even though she’s grey area famous since she’s been on TV and people seem to hold that in high esteem and pay attention to you after having been on TV. She’s at sex tape level of fame, you know we’d all watch her fuck, because we know the name enough to think it’s more important than amateur porn….but we don’t actually know her music, and would not actually go to her club appearances she only gets because she’s been on TV… But the good news is she’s wearing bike shorts, they are in style and trendy, unlike her music… And she’s twerking like a white girl tying to seduce the black guys in….as everyone knows the black twitter, instagram and memes is where the internet market is at now….careers can be made off this…and not just TheShadeRoom….other things too. 5 American (Or Canadian) Pop Stars Who Have Showed Off Their Spanish Chops With Latin Collaborations

Go here to see the original:

Source: George Pimentel / Getty Drake has been the talk of the town all day since releasing a brand new track titled “Mia” with Bad Bunny . The up-tempo record features Aubrey singing in Spanish, as Bunny follows up with a long verse of his own. The visual, released simultaneously, sees both stars enjoying an evening block party, equipped with dancing, hookahs, and a game of dominoes. Bad Bunny feat Drake – “Mia” But 2018 is far from Drake’s first time teaming up with a Latin-American superstar. Back in 2013, Drizzy teamed up with former Aventura lead singer  Romeo Santos for “Odio,” in which the Canadian also showcased his Spanish singing skills. This initial collaboration was especially fitting following the lyrics from Drake’s 2011 smash hit “The Motto,” where he rapped, “Spanish girls love me like I’m Aventura.” What foreshadowing. Romeo Santos feat Drake – “Odio” Though Drake is known for his ability to “adapt” into other cultures like they’re his own, he’s not the first–and won’t be the last–to experiment with some bi-lingual singing skills. Let’s take a look at other huge stars who have crossed over into collaborations with Latin sensations. Before Romeo and Drake came Romeo and Usher .  Mr. Raymond doesn’t actually show off any bi-lingual chops on his track “Promise” from Romeo Santos’ 2011 album  Fórmula, Vol. 1 , but the collaboration was a big deal for both artists, nonetheless. Romeo Santos feat Usher – “Promise” We can’t talk about North American pop-stars crossing over without talking about Justin Bieber . The Canadian heartthrob hopping on the remix to Daddy Yankee  &  Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” is probably the most successful Spanish crossover of all-time–and with the original video boasting 5.5 billion views on Youtube, it’s one of the most successful singles ever, in general. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat Justin Bieber – “Despacito (Remix)” Keeping it in the family, Luis Fonsi’s brother  Jean Rodriguez is actually the one who coached Beyoncé  on her Spanish chops before she hopped on J Balvin’s “Mi Gente.” Though the release of this song (and Bey’s involvement in it) had everybody freaking out, this wasn’t Mrs. Carter’s first time around the block. The superstar has made her fair share of Spanish remixes to her very own songs including “Si Yo Fuera Un Chico (If I Were a Boy),” “Oye (Listen),” and “Irreemplazable (Irreplaceable).” J Balvin & Willy William feat Beyoncé- “Mi Gente” Though it wasn’t a collaboration with a Latin musician, Kendrick Lamar paid tribute to his Los Angeles roots by rapping his a$$ off en Español for his feature on labelmate Schoolboy Q ‘s track “Collard Greens.” Schoolboy Q feat Kendrick Lamar – “Collard Greens” Those five aren’t the only North American artists to dabble in some Spanish, check out these honorable mentions to get well-versed in the bi-lingual world of American music. DJ Snake feat Selena Gomez, Ozuna, Cardi B – “Taki Taki”

Quiz: Which Type Of HBCU Student Are You?

Source: Ron Tom/ABC / Getty College…the best days of our lives. Whether you’re reading this from your dorm room or you’re well into your career thinking back on the old days , you know higher learning institutions provide a different kind of fun, freedom, and sense of camaraderie you can’t find anywhere else. And if you made the extraordinary decision to attend an HBCU, that feeling is twice as intense. Historically Black College and Universities give non-wypipo a home away from home, where we can learn about our history, make like-minded friends, have fun, and learn to love ourselves for who we are. For many of us, it’s the first time we see other Black people in positions of power, influence, and esteem. It’s a gold mine for Black excellence, enlightenment, and scholarship. It’s oh so necessary. Depending on our personalities and overall life goals, we all end up playing a different part at our respective HBCUs. There are the geeks, who are all about getting higher grades than every other living being—because, what’s life if you don’t make valedictorian at the end of such an expensive education? There are the athletes, who are dedicated to looking good and feeling great. Going pro is a dream come true for many of these types, but for those with less ambitious goals, it’s all about the sweat and competition. Don’t forget the kid who lives life as a voice for the Black community. This student is most likely to become the president of the Black Student Union.(S)he is all about uplifting Black people, building Black influence and they’ll probably go on to fight for Black rights all over the nation. And it wouldn’t be a historically black college or university if we didn’t talk about Greek life. You know who they are, you know what they’re about, and you know it’s LIT lit when they come through. No matter who you are/were on campus, it’s time to turn up. Homecoming season is upon us and HBCU students and alumni everywhere are about to celebrate like only we can.
