A New Traveling Exhibit Highlights Thomas Jefferson’s Legacy Of Slavery

“To survive with little nutrition, to make it across dangerous waters, to survive the peril of being in boats with other black people that they did not know nor speak their language…It’s an amazing story when you think about it” — Bishop T.D. Jakes DALLAS — Bishop T.D. Jakes paused briefly to reflect on long ago autumns  while viewing a poignant exhibit about Thomas Jefferson and slavery inside the African American Museum of Dallas. Jakes, the influential Pastor of The Potter’s House, walked through a powerful three-gallery exhibition that featured detailed accounts of how enslaved Africans labored on Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia plantation, Monticello, some 200 years ago. “As an African-American I think it’s really difficult for you not to be passionate about this,” Jakes said during an interview inside the museum. “But even as an American in general I think it is a part of our history that gets swept up under the rug and yet it has so much to do with the current dilemmas that we face today and it has all the world to do with any solutions that are derived for us to be more harmonious as a people in this country.” Jakes is the honorary co-chair of a new traveling exhibit, “Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty,” which will run from Sept. 22 to Dec. 21 at the African American Museum of Dallas. The exhibition tells the story of slavery at Monticello, Jefferson’s 5000-acre plantation, from the perspective of Africans who Jefferson enslaved. More than 300 artifacts, works of art and documents representing Jefferson’s legacy of slavery be on display. Dallas is the first city to host the exhibit that will feature additional objects that have never left Monticello. Other stops for the exhibit include Detroit, Richmond and then the West Coast in 2019. ( Photo : African American Museum of Dallas ) “You know, it’s interesting, as I was walking around museum, reading some of the quotes that were attributed to Jefferson, the conflict that he had while being an advocate for emancipation on one hand yet he was a slave owner on the other,” Jakes said. “I think that conflict is indicative of where we find ourselves today as a people that many people in this country have not resolved their own inner turmoil about how they see the assimilation of other cultures into our society, what role they should be, and the tug and pull between those two issues.” Gayle Jessup White knows something about inner turmoil, too, because she is still processing a complex past: Her African ancestors – men, women and children — were enslaved by Thomas Jefferson. Jessup White, community engagement officer for Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, and a descendant of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, helped facilitate the exhibit opening in Dallas. “This is a story about my family,” Jessup White said last week. “And this exhibit humanizes people. You will see tools that were used by enslaved people, people who were cast aide, people who were left behind, but these people were the backbone of America.” Jessup White is an integral part of Monticello’s African American experience: DNA tests have proved that Sally Hemings was White’s great-great-great-great aunt. More than 80 members of the Hemings family lived in slavery at Monticello over five generations. “In this exhibit, you will see the stories of six families who lived and worked in slavery at Monticello, we know of these families because Thomas Jefferson took such copious notes,” she said.   Sally Hemings is considered one of the most important African-American women in history. At just 16 years old and a slave, Hemings negotiated with one of the most powerful men in the nation, ensuring she would receive “extraordinary privileges” and achieve freedom for her children. Jefferson, the author of The Declaration of Independence and America’s third President, fathered at least six children with Hemings. “We’ve given back to Sally Hemings her humanity,” White said. “The objective of this exhibition is a bit different —we want visitors to understand Sally Hemings as a person through her family roles as a mother, daughter and sister. We’re not just talking about Thomas Jefferson and his family, we’re talking about the enslaved people and their families, too.” “This is an American story because these enslaved people helped shape America,” Jessup White added. “This exhibit is a big deal: There is lots to see, lots to take in, and lots to learn.” Jakes said the legacy of slavery is complex — but well worth exploring. “I think it’s important that we own the fact that our founding fathers were flawed in that way and it helps us to better understand the potentials and possibilities of the recurrence of that in contemporary society,” Jakes said. “I think it’s just a very important look at where we came from. Dr. Harry Robinson, President and CEO of Dallas’ African American Museum, said the Monticello exhibit is important and distinctive. “This is information that children won’t get in textbooks,” Robinson said. “This exhibit tells about slavery from the enslaved people’s point of view – and that’s a new perspective. This is their story.” Robinson added that residents of Dallas – Black and white – can benefit from the exhibit. “Dallas is sometimes considered a cultural outpost and when we established this museum, we were trying to fill the void,” Robinson said. “This exhibition will help us bring about discussions of [racial] issues that we have been dodging for some time.” Meanwhile, Jakes said America must come to grips with slavery to effectively confront contemporary racial issues. “If this country is going to live out its highest ideals,” Jakes said, “were going to have to be very intentional in listening, and learning, and not muting the voice of the person who cries out in the night and says I have been oppressed.” PHOTO : (Museum) Joseph G. Denzel Washington Leads Efforts To Restore August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Home

A fter bringing his theatrical works to the silver screen and on Broadway, Denzel Washington is honoring legendary playwright August Wilson in a different way. According to CBS Pittsburgh , the actor has been working to raise money to restore Wilson’s Pittsburgh home. Actor Denzel Washington helps raise millions for transformation of August Wilson House — https://t.co/rx0T55aOhQ — KDKA (@KDKA) September 27, 2018 The home—which sits at 1727 Bedford Avenue—will become the August Wilson House; a space that will house exhibits, classes for aspiring writers, and host plays, the news outlet writes. So far several celebrities have stepped up to help bring the vision for the August Wilson House to fruition. Amongst those who have donated to the project—that is being spearheaded by Washington—includes Tyler Perry , Oprah Winfrey , Shonda Rhimes , and Spike Lee . There was a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday. “I love August. He touches my soul, our souls. This is just like coming home to me. I feel so comfortable here,” Washington told the news outlet. “It starts with August and the wonderful people here and the commitment that we see today to this community, and I’m glad to be a part of that.” Wilson’s brother Richard Kittel says August would have been honored and humbled that his former house would be turned into a space to inspire playwrights, actors, and artists for generations to come. In 2015, Washington announced that he had landed a deal with HBO to produce nine of August Wilson’s plays for the cable network. “His stories are specifically African American stories, but the themes are universal,” Washington told the Hollywood Reporter . “He was just a bright, brilliant shining light who was here and then he was gone, but his work will live forever to be interpreted by actors and directors for as long as we’re here.” According to the Post-Gazette , the HBO project is still in the works and is slated to be released by 2020. Republicans Portray Maxine Waters As An Angry Black Woman Over Senators’ Data Breach

See the article here:

R epublicans applauded Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh ’s angry words during his Senate confirmation hearing but called California’s Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters an angry Black woman for denouncing allegations of her staff’s involvement in a data breach. SEE ALSO: Trump Once Again Proves He Has An Unhealthy Obsession With Maxine Waters Waters called the accusations “lies, lies and more despicable lies” that are “being pedaled by ultra-right wing pundits,” in a Twitter post on Saturday. Several right-wing sites, including the Gateway Pundit, blamed the congresswoman’s staff for adding personal information about three GOP senators to the lawmakers’ Wikipedia pages. The breach came on Thursday, hours after the Senate testimony of Christine Blasey Ford , who alleged that Kavanagh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school, the Washington Post reported. Please read my statement on false allegations regarding the leak of the personal information of U.S. Senators: pic.twitter.com/YBEekR6jBB — Maxine Waters (@RepMaxineWaters) September 29, 2018 Ari Fleischer , President George W. Bush ’s former press secretary, illustrated the double standard in a tweet that received high-fives from fellow Republicans. “This denial is angry. This suggests she doesn’t have the temperment (sic) to be a Member of Congress. When someone is accused of something they didn’t do, they must not be angry. They must not be defiant. They must not question the motives of the accuser. They must be calm and serene,” Fleischer wrote. Yet Republicans saw no problem with Kavanaugh, who could sit on the nation’s highest court for decades, defending his reputation through an angry, uncontrolled tirade. Indeed, South Carolina’s GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham also expressed his outrage at Democrats during the hearing. Waters has long been a target of Republicans because she stands up to the GOP. Supporters cheered the congresswoman for daring the president’s supporters to shoot her in an escalating dispute with  Donald Trump . “Shoot straight because there’s nothing like a wounded animal,” she said boldly at a June immigration rally in Los Angeles. Fair Or ALL THE WAY Foul? Take A Peek Inside The FBI’s Search For “Black Identity Extremists” [Video]

If you weren’t aware, the FBI has labeled certain Black activists as possible “domestic terrorists” seeking to incite and execute violent acts against police. Yes, you read that correct…that African Americans are supposedly posing a violent threat to police officers, and NOT the other way around . Organized actions such as self-defense training courses, safe weapons training, and open-carry neighborhood patrols in their own communities have “tipped off” the FBI for leaders of movements such as these to be seen as a threat. Vice follows the plight of Rakem Balogun, the Dallas man taken in by the FBI on weapons suspicions as a “Black Identity Extremist” and eventually freed without charges. SMH, what do you think of the FBI’s focus on groups like these as “potential terrorists?” Getty/YouTube

Sofia Richie Big TIts of the Day

The nice thing about rich kids who don’t need to work a day in their life because their dad is Lionel Richie, so that they can spend their time dating a Kardashian for attention and media hype and followers, because people are into the Kardashians, and rich kids love attention….is that they have the budget to continue eating and eating all the best foods, always food in the house, so that they can carry their weight in their tits….you know hormones in the food, and all those medical spa treatments that come with being on set of the Kardashian show, which I assume she’s on, otherwise why would the media be bothering with her and her relationship with Scott Disick… More importantly, why does her 18-20 year old face look so beat…and old… I guess we don’t need to bother with face when the tits be out. Complicated marketing strategy. I wonder how many people at the Kardashian marketing agency came up with this nonsense. Do better people. I mean this is all so boring. Happy Birthday Weezy! Here Are Our Picks for the Top 10 Lil Wayne Songs

Read the original:

If you ask some people Lil Wayne is one of the most talented and versatile artists that hip-hop has ever seen. If you ask others, he may be labeled inconsistent, one minute he’ll drop a metaphor that makes you pause the music and think, the next he’s going into way too much detail about how he likes to perform oral sex on women. Either way Lil Wayne has been one of the brightest stars in hip-hop since his appearance on ‘Back That Azz Up’ by Juvenile back in 1998. Source: Rick Kern / Getty The star has seen tumultuous times in his career, from being imprisoned at Rikers Island to basically being held hostage by his own adopted father, he’s seen it all, but its truly only made the hip-hop community appreciate his contributions that much more. With that being said, we consider Weezy to be one of the top 25 rappers of all-time (maybe even higher) so we’d be remiss to not take a look back at Wayne’s career on his 36th birthday. Here are our picks for the top 10 Lil Wayne songs, in no particular order!   10. Lollipop We know what your’e thinking, why is this corny ass Lil Wayne song the first one listed? Well despite how corny it may be it was a radio smash hit spending a crazy six weeks at #1 on the Hip Hop Billboard charts. The song also stayed on Billboard charts for an astounding 26 weeks. No one could have guessed the success of this song when it was first released. As the first single to ‘The Carter 3’, it created an incredible amount of momentum for Wayne which culminated in the album going #1 on the Billboard albums chart and ended up selling over 1 million units in the first week and it can thank this international hit for a big portion of the sales. 9. A Milli From that same spectacular album came a more bar centric song in ‘A Milli’ which saw Wayne boasting about his incredible talent and comparing popping people with guns to popping Orville Redenbacher popcorn. 8. 6 Foot 7 Foot After the release of ‘The Carter 3’ most fans were wondering if Wayne could top what ended up being the best album of his career. He responded by dropping one of his best tracks yet in ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’. In the song he gave us one of the most memorable Lil Wayne bars of all-time in: ‘Real G’s move in silence like lasagna’. In addition to this he introduced us to the young and talented Cory Gunz.  7. Tha Block is Hot This song was Wayne’s first official single from his debut major label album, one could argue that without the success and longevity of this southern banger we wouldn’t have the Wayne we have today. 6. Go DJ When Wayne linked up with Mannie Fresh on his fourth album it introduced him to a sound that was more mainstream appealing while still being hard hitting like his songs that preceded it. It got Wayne into clubs all around the country and were positive it made some fans sure that Wayne was destined to be a star. You couldn’t ride around in a car at all without hearing this song in 2004. Rappers just don’t drop tracks like this anymore. 5. Georgia Bush Alright, that’s enough of album Wayne, real Lil Wayne fans will tell you that despite his album success, he’s actually at his best on his mixtapes. After the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, Wayne felt compelled to speak up for his native New Orleans which he felt was ignored by then President George W. Bush. In the song he criticizes the President and highlights just how hard New Orleans was hit. To this day its still one of the most heartfelt Weezy tracks. You can find this track on his collaborative mixtape with DJ Drama titled ‘Dedication 2’ which dropped in 2006. 4. Upgrade Da Drought 3 may be a top contender for one of the best Lil Wayne mixtapes, seriously go listen to it again, it’s fire! Its actually really hard to pick one stand out song from the tape but if we had to pick, it would be this track for sure. 3. Stuntin Stuntin was one of the first tracks where we got to hear Wayne and his protege, an unknown by the name of Drake, spit on a track together. It easily became an instant classic from his Dedication 3 mixtape. Oh, and this was the first mixtape to drop after Barack Obama was nominated President in 2008 as DJ Drama reminds us in the middle of the freakin song. 2. Swag Surfin As you can tell, on his mixtapes, Wayne made a habit of ruining other peoples songs by going harder on them than the original artist did. On ‘swag surfin’ Wayne literally spazzes with straight bars over the whole track. It’s honestly a classic Wayne track and isn’t even as popular as some of his other tracks. 1. Rap City Freestyle Okay, this last pick isn’t an actual song, its one of Wayne’s most popular freestyles on one of his appearances on the now debunked BET show ‘Rap City’. Still it shows just how talented he was and why he is ultimately considered to be one of the best MC’s to ever grace a mic with his presence.   So, what do you say, do you agree with our list? Bill Cosby Impresses Fellow Inmates, Earns Prison Nickname

Well, folks, it’s been about 24 hours since Bill Cosby was sentenced to prison and taken into custody. It’s a positive development for just about everyone in the world, with the exceptions of Cosby himself and maybe a handful of wacky sweater enthusiasts. Considering he appears to have raped scores of women over the course of several decades, Cosby’s 3-10 year sentence is appallingly light, but on the plus side, he’s 81, so there’s a good chance he’s tasted the sweet pudding pop of freedom for the last time. Anyway, millions are rightly celebrating Cosby’s incarceration today, and we salute his victims for their bravery in coming forward and their persistence in seeing that this monster was brought to justice. Another group that’s rightly jazzed (Get it? Because he likes jazz?) about the Cos being locked away are his fellow inmates. Despite what Orange Is the New Black might have led you to believe, minimum security prisons are actually rather boring places where amusingly topical monologues are few and far between. So the arrival of a celebrity inmate — particularly one as famous as Bill Cosby — is highly anticipated occasion. “Prisoners are excited that Cosby is there,” a source close to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections tells Radar Online. “Even the toughest cellblocks showed respect for him.” And it seems they’ve even done the disgraced comic the honor of granting him a prison nickname. “They’re calling him the ‘OG’ — lingo for ‘original gangster,’” the insider claims. We’re hoping that nickname is delivered with a healthy dose of irony, as Cosby spent the past 50 years chiding black men for the way they dress by day and drugging and raping women by night. There’s nothing remotely gangster about either of those activities. Earlier today, we reported that Cosby is trying to beg his way out of prison  by claiming that he’s in danger due to his celebrity status. Fortunately, prison authorities anticipated that argument, and they essentially shot it down with a statement issued moments ago: “We are taking all of the necessary precautions to ensure Mr. Cosby’s safety and general welfare in our institution,” Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said. “The long-term goal is for him to be placed in the general population to receive the programming required during his incarceration.” Sounds like you may want to get comfortable, Mr. Cosby. You’re gonna be in there longer than Theo got grounded when he took the car without permission. Zab-zippity! View Slideshow: Bill Cosby Sex Scandal: What Led to His Arrest

Bill Cosby Doesn’t Deserve Your Sadness

See the rest here:

Source: MARK MAKELA / Getty T ake a minute to absorb that truth for a minute: Bill Cosby doesn’t deserve your sadness. It’s a bit jarring, admittedly, to see that Bill Cosby is actually going to spend time behind bars. There are a few reasons for the surrealism of it all. First, the obvious: Bill Cosby was one of America’s most beloved figures for decades. We grew up with him and seeing him go to jail is something we never thought we’d see when we were kids. Second, there’s the fact that these allegations of sexual assault have followed Cosby for so long that it seemed like he’d never actually go to jail. It’s that second point that you need to remember. Because no matter your affinity for Cosby and his cultural contributions over the decades, he is still a man who has been accused of dozens of instances of sexual assault and, as of today, is a convicted sex offender headed to prison. So, as disorienting as it is to see Cosby in handcuffs, just remember that his confirmed and alleged victims say they have experienced worse. Save your compassion for those women. From Bill Cosby to Harvey Weinstein. https://t.co/KIfMdREA8V — NewsOne (@newsone) September 24, 2018 Don’t get me wrong: this whole situation is a tragedy. It’s a tragedy for sexual assault survivors who had to wear their pain in secret, sure that no matter what they said, the man who assaulted them would never face any punishment. It’s a tragedy for the women whose lives and careers were ruined because of the damage — physical, emotional, professional and otherwise — Cosby caused them. It’s a tragedy for a society that allows a culture in which someone like Cosby is able to thrive while having committed the crimes he’s been convicted of today. Yes, this is a tragedy. But not for Cosby. There’s another reason not to feel any sadness for Cosby: He wouldn’t feel any for you if you were on the wrong end of handcuffs like he was today, no matter the reason you were in cuffs in the first place. Bill Cosby has spent most of the 21st century chastising the most vulnerable Black Americans among us. His infamous 2004 “ Pound Cake speech ” for the NAACP  — full of false information and fake news about things like unemployment, dropout rates, incarceration rates and single parenthood — was the rallying cry for respectability politics. Cosby loved picking on poor Black people for the way they made him look in front of white people. His chiding of Black Americans, demanding that they pull their pants up, became inextricably linked to his legacy. And now, the same man who wagged his finger at incarcerated people will now spend his next few years surrounded by them. Meet the Black prosecutor who made sure time was up on #BillCosby : https://t.co/pgaIHd4ES7 pic.twitter.com/GifaPWOR9k — NewsOne (@newsone) April 30, 2018 It’s important to remember that Cosby never sagged his pants. He never said the “N” word. He came from a two-parent household. He’s well-educated. And he’s a jailed sexual assaulter. I’d like to think that we can learn lessons from all of this. That this is the final nail in the coffin for respectability politics. That those cell doors closing in front of Cosby also signal the closure of ideas that involve Black people needing to dress a certain way to avoid jail or that “Black on Black” crime is a reflection of anything more than proximity. That the era of “pull your pants up” pseudo-activism is replaced by a culture of compassion where we try to empathize for those in jail or unfortunate life situations because we understand the larger factors that put those people in those positions. The ideas that Cosby have championed should go away with him. I also hope that we learn that this wasn’t a victory for victims of sexual assault; that needing dozens of accusations of sexual assault and two trials before sending a man in his 80s to jail decades after he’s allegedly committed the acts isn’t a blueprint for true justice. Victory isn’t eventual jail for sexual assault. Victory is a society that doesn’t allow people to feel like they can commit acts of sexual violence without recourse in the first place. Victory isn’t jail. Victory is sexual assault not happening in the first place. So pardon me if I don’t feel any sadness for Bill Cosby. Excuse me if I don’t have any remorse for the perpetrator of heinous crimes. Bill Cosby doesn’t deserve your tears. He never will.
