Move over, Zuckerberg. Florida resident Zachary Marks, 11, began his own social network, called Grom Social, after his parents banned him from using Facebook. Grom Social is designed specifically for children. Marks had a Facebook account for roughly a week despite being two years too young to join the site, having lied about his age to create an account. When his parents discovered that he may have been engaging in risky online activities, they pulled the plug. At that point, he came up with a plan. “I spent all my time on the computer chatting with friends. Then, I made mistakes,” Marks says on the Grom Social About page. “I had to deactivate my account.” “One of my adult friends cursed and posted something inappropriate, and I cursed back. Also, I friend-requested grownups who I did not know.” “About a day later, my dad found out. He was really mad.” Marks said he wasn’t interested in any existing, kid-friendly, social networks – “They were all childish,” he said – so he set out to create one for “Groms.” That’s slang term for young surfers that he re-purposed to mean something close to “precocious kid.” Soon enough, Grom Social was conceived. In order to keep members safe, only parents and parent-approved adults can join. Parents of kid members are kept up to date on youngsters’ online activities via email. The site also has a built-in language filter to keep the expletives in check. Grom Social is also compliant with COPPA, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, a controversial law aimed at keeping kids safe online. Some argue this is ineffective and unconstitutionally limits 1st Amendment rights. Under COPPA, websites, apps and plug-ins are not allowed to collect information from children less than 13 years old without their parent’s express consent. The burden of verification, however, simply isn’t worth it to most networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare, so they ban members under 13. To date, Grom Social has almost 7,000 members and is open to users under 15 in the U.S. and Canada. If it really explodes, could it hurt Facebook’s growth potential?
Usher and Shakira are set to debut on The Voice, which just crowned Cassadee Pope champion, in Season 4. Here’s a look at the first photos of them in the big chairs! In just-released promotional portraits, the two new mentors pose in the show’s famous swivel chairs alongside veterans Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Shakira, 35, and Usher, 34, replace Christina Aguilera, 32, and Cee Lo Green, 38, for the NBC show’s fourth season, premiering March 25. Shakira, who will soon welcome her firstborn son with boyfriend Gerard Pique (reports that Shakira gave birth already were a hoax) is quite pregnant. “I’m thrilled to be here and I’m sure he is too,” she told Access Hollywood , pointing to her baby bump, which Levine said contains his infant namesake. “She’s going to name the baby Adam, actually,” the Maroon 5 frontman, 33, joked. “It’s a great name. It’s a very strong name. Strong name.” The “One More Night” crooner admitted he “underestimated” the Latin superstar. “I stole a couple of contestants from him,” Shakira explained. With no idea how things would shake out, the six remaining contestants were waiting on pins and needles to learn if they would earn one of the four semifinal spots. As has been the case since the live shows began, the coaches have no way; it’s all up to America now, and it’s every singer (not team) for himself or herself. Convicted killer Michelle Kosilek’s facial hair was the subject of a hearing in a case where a judge has already ordered Massachusetts to pay for her sex-reassignment surgery. The attorneys for Kosilek argued before Chief US District Court Judge Mark Wolf that her electrolysis treatments should continue despite Department of Corrections resistance. It was not clear whether Wolf would decide today whether to compel the department to continue with the beard removal treatment that stopped after six weeks. According to Kosilek’s attorney, Fran Cohen, the removal – part of her male-to-female transformation that includes a sexual reassignment surgery – was incomplete when halted. Robert Dierner, a medical expert who met with Kosilek and determined that electrolysis wasn’t necessary, testified that Kosilek appeared to exaggerate her facial hair growth. For example, Dierner testified, during one evaluation, Kosilek said going several days without shaving would result in a full beard. “I didn’t think that was possible,” Dierner testified on behalf of the state Department of Correction. Kosilek strangled his wife, Cheryl, in Mansfield, Mass., in 1990 and dumped her body in a car at the Emerald Square Mall in North Attleborough. Kosilek then fled to New York State before being arrested. Kosilek, who was convicted as Robert Kosilek but appeared at trial dressed like a woman, legally changed her name to Michelle in 1993 and has been living as a woman in an all-male prison in Norfolk since. In September, Wolf issued a landmark ruling that taxpayers must pay for Kosilek to undergo sex-reassignment surgery for a transsexual prison inmate. The surgery, he ruled, is the only adequate care for his serious mental illness, gender identity disorder. Kosilek first sued the Department of Correction in 2000, arguing that its refusal to pay for a sex-change violates her Eighth Amendment right against cruel and unusual punishment. The department has consistently opposed Kosilek’s request. Wolf ruled that the DOC violated the Eighth Amendment.
