Weekend Receipts: Battle: Los Angeles Destroys Invasion From Mars

This weekend, aliens attempted to storm your local cineplex and America decided it likes its space invaders to shoot lasers at LA rather than just nab some moms. Battle: Los Angeles took the box office crown this weekend, while the Robert Zemeckis-produced Mars Needs Moms crash-landed at number five. And occupying that squishy middle ground was Red Riding Hood , which had a so-so debut at so-so number three. Your weekend receipts are here.

Universal’s geek bonding road trip flick Paul screens shortly tonight at SXSW, but another sci-fi alien pic with ties to the Nick Frost-Edgar Wright-Simon Pegg universe may have already stolen its thunder: Attack the Block , director Joe Cornish’s horror comedy about inner-city London kids who channel their delinquent ways into survival skills when vicious space invaders descend.

Jennifer Lopez Brings ‘Latina Flavor’ To ‘American Idol,’ Fans Say

‘Paula Abdul did her thing, but J.Lo can do better,’ one fan says at auditions for Lopez’s ‘On the Floor’ video. By MTV News staff Steven Tyler, Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson Photo: Michael becker / FOX Two episodes into the new season of “American Idol,” fans are weighing in on the show’s newest judges: rock icon Steven Tyler and Hollywood triple threat Jennifer Lopez. Having already judged talent in New Jersey and New Orleans , some of Lopez’s biggest fans are loving what the New York native is bringing alongside side Tyler and “Idol” vet Randy Jackson at the table. “She looked amazing. She looked clean. She looked fresh,” Falon Johnson told MTV News at auditions for J.Lo’s “On the Floor” music video. “She’s like the new Paula Abdul. I’m excited to see what she brings to ‘American Idol,’ because she has some tough shoes to fill. I think she’s gonna do just fine. She’s J.Lo!” Carlos Ortiz thought Lopez found her footing at the table and that her opinions and criticisms were justified. “I think she is going to be fabulous,” he said. “Her consistency in every way, every detail, every mannerism that she puts out there, I think she’s gonna bring up lots of good things for these kids.” Fellow “On the Floor” auditioner Jason Maldonado was excited to see Jenny From the Block being herself on the show. “I think she’s bringing the Latina flavor to it,” he said. “So it’s different. Paula Abdul did her thing, but J.Lo can do better.” Ortiz also thinks fans might be tuning in just to see Lopez. “I think they made rather right choices. I watched the ratings last night; they’re over 26 million,” he said. “They actually saw the show. I think they’re doing great, and I think it has to do with J.Lo.” How do you think J.Lo is doing on the judges’ panel so far? Share your reviews in the comments! Michael Jackson’s ‘Moonwalker’ To Get U.S. Theater Debut?

A Hollywood cinema is searching for a print of MJ’s 1988 film with plans to give it a ‘one night only’ screening. By James Montgomery Michael Jackson’s “Moonwalker” Photo: Warner Bros. Michael Jackson’s short-film anthology “Moonwalker” may finally get a debut theatrical screening in the United States more than 20 years after it was released. Back in 1988, MJ first unveiled the ambitious project, which contained several long-form videos for songs off his then-just-released Bad album, including his famous 25-minute clip for “Smooth Criminal.” The film had been scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters that Christmas, but for whatever reason, that plan was scrapped. The movie was released on VHS early in 1989, and — surprise, surprise — became a massive success. But now, more than two decades after its debut, one theater is planning to give “Moonwalker” a proper premiere here in the States. According to TMZ , Hollywood’s Arclight Cinemas is actively searching for a print of the film, with plans to show it on the big screen … for one night only. The idea came after Jackson fans flooded Arclight’s Facebook page with requests to show “Moonwalker,” and the theater is now on the hunt for a copy of the flick. Even if the search is successful, there’s no word on when the premiere would occur. The theater had not responded to MTV News’ e-mail seeking a comment by press time. “Moonwalker” features videos for Jackson tracks like “Speed Demon” (directed by Claymation innovator Will Vinton), “Leave Me Alone” (which was released as a promo and won Jackson a 1989 Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form) and, as mentioned, the iconic “Criminal,” which features Jackson battling a group of mobsters led by Joe Pesci. The flick also served as the inspiration for the super-awesome Sega game “Moonwalker, which featured a digital MJ morphing into a laser-blasting robot with the aid of his chimpanzee pal, Bubbles. ‘American Idol’ Alum Allison Iraheta Weighs In On Revamped Show

‘Fifteen? That’s when everyone is figuring out who the hell they are,’ singer says about new minimum age limit. By Gil Kaufman Allison Iraheta via streaming video on Wednesday Photo: MTV News Allison Iraheta knows what it’s like to be the young kid on “American Idol.” She made it to the top four in season 8 when she was just 16, making her the youngest singer to ever advance that far on the show. But when the now-18-year-old music biz veteran dropped in to participate in MTV’s first-ever post-“American Idol” live stream on Wednesday night, even she was shocked at how young some of the contestants were on night one of season 10’s audition round. “Damn, that’s scary!” Iraheta said via Skype. “I was scared for my auditions. Fifteen? That’s when everyone is figuring out who the hell they are. I didn’t even know who the hell I was until a year ago.” With the age limit dropped to 15 this year, Iraheta said she hopes a young ‘un can win, but admitted that before she came out onstage when she was on the show, she would often totally freak out due to nerves. “Really, be you, be who you are, be true to yourself,” Iraheta advises contestants. The big question of the night, of course, was whether Iraheta missed departed judge Simon Cowell, who famously put her through the ringer a few times during her season. “It was different, right?” she said of the vibe with new superstar judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez . “I think change is good. We all miss him. It’s a little weird at first. I think it’s cool. It’s about time they did a little something different.” Iraheta is sporting new dark locks, which replace her signature flame-red hair. She said the radical change came about after she grew tired of seeing “16 chicks at the mall” with the same kind of red streaks in their hair. Though she couldn’t reveal much detail about her upcoming second album, Iraheta said it was going to be a “hell of a year,” promising some rocking new music. Unlike pal and season 8 “Idol” winner Kris Allen , Iraheta didn’t have specific comments on how Tyler and Lopez did, but she was happy to sing a bit of J Lo’s “Jenny From the Block” to spice up her appearance. Catch up on all the dish about new judge J.Lo before season 10 begins. By Jocelyn Vena “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Jennifer Lopez has long been a triple-threat, having conquered music, movies and everything in between. This week, “Jenny From the Block” adds a new gig to her extensive resume: “American Idol” judge . On Wednesday night (January 18), as the new season of the hit Fox reality series kicks off, fans are eager to see what the one-time “In Living Color” “fly girl” will bring to the mix, alongside fellow newbie Steven Tyler and “Idol” vet Randy Jackson. Since September’s announcement that she got the gig, Lopez has made it clear she brings one thing to the table: “tough love.” “I think there are definitely better ways to get your point across [than being cruel],” she said at last year’s announcement. “I’ve mentored on the show before, so I think people have seen that and kinda can feel how I’ll be — or maybe they’ll be surprised.” Later that month, Lopez used three words to describe her judging style : “tough, easy and fair.” “I don’t want to let anybody really great [not make it through] because they’re nervous, and not get to see what they could have did,” Lopez said. “They’re going to come in here and be a little bit nervous in the beginning, and then you realize, ‘Wow, that person is really talented.’ So we work them a little bit more than maybe you’ve seen in the past. We’ve given them more of a chance. “We know what it’s like to be out there,” Lopez added. “I was energized by all of their spirit when they come in here, and they’re so hopeful about what could happen and how it could be.” That same week, “AI” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe posted a photo online of the new judges sitting at the table with “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest and Jackson. With the release of her new song, “On the Floor” (featuring Pitbull, produced by RedOne), and the new season ready to kick off, Lopez revealed she’s really meshing with her fellow judges. “I love everybody,” she said back in October. “It’s such a machine. It runs like clockwork. … Everything’s great!” How do you think Jennifer Lopez will be as an “Idol” judge? Sound off in the comments below!
