In “Attack The Block” Aliens Invade “The Hood” (For A Change)

Continue reading here:

Tomorrow will see the nationwide release of one of this summer’s most anticipated movies – J.J. Abrams’ alleged homage to Steven Spielberg of old, Super 8 . The film centers on a group of white kids in a small Ohio town in the 1970s whose adventures into film-making with their Super 8mm camera are interrupted by a train crash carrying an alien life form. Naturally, chaos reigns in the aftermath. But there’s another “alien attacks” movie also centered on a group of kids coming soon to a theater near you (hopefully) that you may not yet be aware of, but really should be. And this one is of special importance because its story features that rare onscreen occurrence in which the alien, or aliens in this case, invade a predominantly urban (read: black) neighborhood. The film’s tag line, which you can read on the poster above, says it all: “ INNER CITY VS OUTER SPACE. ” Or, as I like to refer to it: the “ Aliens attack da hood ” project. For once, right? They almost never do! And the often vilified, bureaucratically-victimized young black boys and girls who live in “da hood” actually save the day for a change! It all sounds quite revolutionary, doesn’t it? Sarcasm aside, the film I’m talking about is a British-produced horror movie titled Attack The Block , brought to you by the producers of the hilarious zombie spoof Shaun Of The Dead , and the not-so hilarious graphic novel adaption of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World . The movie, in brief, pits a group of mostly black kids against an invasion of alien monsters, turning a an inner city London tower block into a fortress under siege, and a ragtag group of armed teenagers into heroes. Since its North American debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival this past March in Austin, Texas the critical and commercial buzz around the movie has been near-deafening. It was released in the UK last month and although it has a North American distributor, an official release date for those of us on this side of the Atlantic has yet to be announced. Given all that I’ve heard and read about the movie (from film critics and general audiences) it sounds like perfect summer fare – an exceptional combination of spectacle and story. You’ll get the thrills and chills, but also plenty of heart. Here’s a small sample: From Variety : “… enormously appealing debut feature, “Attack the Block”… Pitched as “inner city vs. outer space,” pic sees a quintet of teen street hoodlums defend their tower-block home in the projects from an invasion of shaggy-haired aliens with Day-Glo teeth. Set over one wild night in South London, this zero-to-hero tale will play gangbusters in its native Blighty before a rich ancillary career.” From Cinemablend : “Attack The Block Could Be The Best Action Movie Of The Year… finds a balance in scope to keep the action moving while showcasing the brilliant, hilarious and realistic teen actors. There’s a surprising amount of smaller-scale, alien attack action in Attack the Block and Cornish’s crack team of make-up and visual effects artists pull out all the stops. The film is quickly paced and never lets up… The result: an alien invasion where you actually give a damn about the folks being invaded.” And from IndieWire : “The violence is frenetic and visceral, but Cornish shoots these sequences with clarity and intensity, suggesting he’s an action director ready to bloom. And if you live by the adage that 90% of directing is casting, then Cornish’s job was fairly easy, as a group of total unknowns completely carry this picture. Credit must be given to the young John Boyega, a possible future star, who plays Moses, the de-facto leader of the pack. Boyega has a face that reveals both anger and strength in regular doses, the type of attitude that just cannot be taught in acting classes. As such, our designated hero, Boyega, with an expressive upper brow that reflects the character’s intelligence beyond these circumstances, is believable as both a defiant tough guy and as a teen who theorizes that the aliens are a government program meant to eliminate lower-class citizens. He’s compellingly watchable.” As the last snippet notes, the cast of Attack The Block comprises of mostly unknown actors who bring a realism to the film, ensuring that, despite its fantastical tale, remains fairly grounded. And the last line about the aliens being government inventions meant to wipe out the working class, indicates some political and allegorical subtext, speaking to a universal and warranted paranoia amongst black people that’s rooted in a mistrust of government, and people in positions of power in general. History is littered with incidents that instruct those fears. Taking all of the above into consideration, Attack The Block is a film we should all be watching for down the road. There has even been excited talk of an American studio purchasing the film’s remake rights and producing a Hollywood version of it! Let’s hope Sony Pictures does release the original first, and soon, rather than shelve it in favor of an Americanized version of the movie. So, after you’re done devouring popcorn and smoothies at the theater this weekend, watching a group of white kids take on a nasty extraterrestrial in Super 8 , get ready to “Attack The Block” sometime later this year… we hope. The film’s trailer follows below for those who’ve yet to see it: Tambay Obenson is editor of Shadow And Act on the indieWIRE Network , which can be found at http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact . Elle Macpherson Mom Jeans, Mom Cameltoe, Mom Pussy, Mom of the Day

If anyone actually read my site, they’d know that in 1989, Elle Macpherson introduced me to bikini models. Prior to that, I was just a clueless immigrant too busy fucking the handicap fat girl on my block, cuz she seduced me and who was I to say no…. I basically got my hands on a VHS of the SI Swimsuit edition, and bitch looked amazing, and as far as I’m concerned, she still does, especially when her mom pussy eats her mom jeans and makes a mom cametoe, cuz it reminds me that she’s got genitalsI once stayed up late to jerk off to, hoping not to get caught in the foster home I was living in, even though she’s old. I am just that commited to her.

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy Showcase Dancing With the Stars "Assets"

With their undeniable chemistry, her personality and his shirtlessness, Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy seem like a lock for the Dancing With the Stars finals. Last night, their samba “sent shockwaves through the airwaves” (according to Bruno) and Maks helpfully pointed out both his and Kirstie’s posterior attributes. Even better than their performance, which earned a solid 26, was the segment with her resting her head in his lap while Maks gave her encouragement. Everybody, all together now: AWW! Dancing With the Strippers: Kendra Wilkinson Does a Striptease For Len!

Kendra Wilkinson was finally in her element last night. With the right routine and encouragement from partner Louis Van Amstel, K-Dubs finally released her inner beast on Dancing With the Stars, letting loose with a sexy Brazilian party samba that was as uninhibited as her outfit was revealing. For once, her stripper background came in handy: Kendra Wilkinson Shakes It on Dancing With the Stars “The more you gyrated, the more I palpitated,” said Len Goodman, who just received the birthday present of his life in the form of a Kendra Wilkinson striptease. The job has its perks. Tom Bergeron could only add, “Nicely done.” It was, but will it be enough to get her through to the next round? What do you think?

Bree Olson Pleads Guilty in DUI Case

Bree Olson slash Rachel Oberlin is no goddess in the eyes of the law. Charlie Sheen’s former plaything pleaded guilty to a DUI charge Tuesday. The charge stemmed from the porn actress’ arrest in Indiana back in February. According to INCNow (dot) tv, Bree reached a deal with prosecutors in which she will serve one year of unsupervised probation if she stays out of trouble. Olson (whose real name is Rachel Oberlin) must also finish an unspecified amount of community service in the next year. Official sentencing is set for May 3. Bree, who dumped Charlie Sheen presumably for good last weekend, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of DUI after crashing her car February 3. It was originally reported that she was merely taking a leave of absence as one of his goddesses while she returned to Indiana for this DUI sentencing. Alas, the rift turned out to be more serious and the split permanent. But that doesn’t mean there are hard feelings, as Bree is still close with him .

Donnie Wahlberg Finds Fan a New Kidney on Twitter

We normally associate celebs Tweeting with funny, insightful or utterly vapid thoughts. In this case, though, one star used it to save a fan’s life. Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids on the Block and Blue Bloods fame was able to reach out to his followers and find a new kidney for a very sick fan. A tweet from the fan’s best friend who was trying to raise awareness about the girl’s critical situation, because one of her kidneys was failing fast. Donnie re-tweeted the link to his 183,000 followers, asking for help … prompting a barrage of phone calls to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. According to the Boston Herald , the deluge of calls yielded not one, but six matches for Bobbette Miller, who is now scheduled for a transplant in June. All in 140 characters or less. Great story, right? [Photo: WENN.com]

NKOTBSB Release ‘Don’t Turn Out The Lights’ Single

Group first teased the song back in December and are set to tour together this summer. By Aly Semigran NKOTBSB Photo: Getty The Backstreet Boys have finally quit playing games with their fans’ hearts. After giving a sneak peek of their first collaborative single with the New Kids on the Block — whom they’ll be hitting the road with for a massive tour this summer — called “Don’t Turn Out the Lights,” NKOTBSB have now released the song in its entirety. The peppy pop number, complete with synthesizers and the obligatory name-drop (“NKOTBSB,” they announce at the beginning of the track), which was produced by Eman and written by Claude Kelly, features the sing-along chorus, “So don’t turn out the lights now, lights now, lights now/ ‘Cause in a minute we’ll be feeling like never before/ So don’t turn out the lights now, lights now, lights now/ I’ll be whatever you need and more.” Vocals by members of both groups — BSB Nick Carter’s and NKOTB’s Jordan Knight’s contributions are easily recognized — are featured on the three-and-a-half-minute dance-ready song, which sounds like a modern version of their hits from the ’80s and ’90s (think Jason Derulo). Likely to strike a chord with hard-core fans, the song is about rekindling a romance that’s begun to fizzle: “I know we haven’t been getting along at all/ I don’t think that it’s time … I don’t wanna say goodbye/ ‘Cause just when I think it through/ The memories come flooding back/ It’s like instantly I love you like that.” “Don’t Turn Out the Lights” is the debut single off NKOTBSB’s first album together, a self-titled record slated to drop on May 24. As promised recently by Knight, in addition to “Don’t Turn Out the Lights,” the Backstreet Boys will “record probably a couple more songs with” New Kids. Since it’s not the first time the groups have performed music together (they memorably did a mash-up of New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys songs during the 2010 American Music Awards ), it seems they’ve built a good rapport with one another. The guys are ready to share the stage to perform hits from both groups’ repertoires as well as new songs like “Don’t Turn Out the Lights.” “It’s gonna be nonstop back-and-forth action. We’re really gonna play off each other,” Knight explained. What do you think of NKOTBSB’s “Don’t Turn Out the Lights”? Tell us in the comments.
