Big moves for Brit filmmaker Joe Cornish : The writer-director of Attack the Block (who also co-wrote Steven Spielberg’s Tintin and Marvel’s Ant-Man script with Edgar Wright) has landed the gig of writing and directing an adaptation of Neal Stephenson’s 1992 cyberpunk novel Snow Crash for Paramount, Deadline reports . The alternate-reality sci-fi tale follows one Hiro Protagonist, a hacker/swordsman who discovers a new drug/computer virus called Snow Crash is spreading through the postmodern future… and you know what that means: Time for a round of Cast That Movie! Which actors out there could fill Hiro’s shoes? [ Deadline ]
New Kids on the Block, One Direction, the Wanted and more advance to second round — voting is open now! By Christina Garibaldi Backstreet Boys at the 1999 VMAs Photo: Getty Images It was a highly unpredictable first round of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands , with perceived favorites Backstreet Boys and ‘NSYNC out of the competition. Irish boy band Westlife ousted BSB, and British group 5ive took out ‘NSYNC by an extremely thin margin. Many other matchups went down to the wire, including New Kids on the Block, who narrowly avoided an upset by Take That. O-Town received a late rally from their fans, giving them the edge over the Jackson 5. New boy bands like One Direction, the Wanted and Big Time Rush will move on to the next round, but, as you can see, it seems as if no one is safe. So who remains in the competition? Let’s take a look at the next round of matchups! Midwest Westlife vs. O-Town : Westlife proved to be a real contender in this competition after beating the Backstreet Boys in round one. The group — which is about to kick off a farewell tour in May — seems to have a die-hard fanbase that may prove tough for O-Town to overcome. But don’t count them out just yet: They also had a tough first-round matchup in the Jackson 5, and fans may still be hoping for a reunion from these guys, since last year, four of the five original members announced they wanted to get back together. The Beatles vs. New Kids on the Block : NKOTB barely made it through to the second round and now have to face an even tougher competitor: The Beatles. The New Kids had much of their success in the late’80s and early ’90s and have sold 80 million records worldwide. Pretty impressive, but the Beatles are known as the original boy band and are the best-selling band in history. Let’s hope NKOTB are “Hangin’ Tough.” East Jonas Brothers vs. Hanson : It’s not only a battle of the boy bands; it’s a battle of the brothers! Hanson and the Jonas Brothers will face off in a touch matchup in the next round. Both groups, consisting of three brothers, are known for their infectious pop hits and the fact that they all play their own instruments. Hanson received massive success in the mid- to late ’90s with single “MMMBop,” which hit #1 in 27 countries. After marriages, babies and several albums, the group is very much still together and will be touring this summer. With four LPs in just as many years, the Jonas Brothers have sold 8 million albums worldwide and became a household name after starring in two Disney Channel movies, “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.” The guys took a break to work on solo projects but have been working on a follow-up to their 2009 album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times. LFO vs. 5ive : Both of these boy bands barely edged out their competition, which should make for an interesting second-round matchup. 5ive found success overseas with 11 top 10 singles and four top 10 albums in the U.K. before they called it quits in 2001, and LFO became popular in the U.S. during the wave of late-’90s boy bands and had two top 10 hits, including “Summer Girls.” This one may go down to the wire again with both groups having very loyal fanbases. West The Wanted vs. the Monkees : British boy band, the Wanted have certainly gained momentum here in the States over the past few months. The group released a much-anticipated U.S. EP earlier this week and premiered the “Chasing the Sun” video on “MTV First: The Wanted.” They will have to see if this energy can carry them through when they face off against the Monkees. The group enjoyed success in the mid-’60s with their hit television show and songs like “I’m a Believer” and experienced a revival in the mid-’80s with a performance at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards. The band continued to tour off and on until 2011 but lost member Davy Jones earlier this year when he died of a severe heart attack. Big Time Rush vs. Boyz II Men : Both of these groups easily made it past their first-round competition, but it will most likely be a closer matchup in round two. Big Time Rush may have a younger audience voting for them, since they gained success with their hit Nickelodeon television show. Boyz II Men, on the other hand, have longevity on their side, being that they are the most successful R&B group of all time. South One Direction vs. IM5: Even though both of these boy bands are relatively new to the music scene, it seems they already have a lot in common. One Direction were assembled by Simon Cowell on the U.K. version of “The X Factor,” and IM5 were recently created by “American Idol” creator Simon Fuller, Perez Hilton and creative director and choreographer Jamie King. NKOTBSB vs. Mindless Behavior : With the Backstreet Boys out of the competition, BSB fans can still vote for NKOTBSB. The New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys supergroup released a compilation album in 2011 consisting of each of their hit songs and two joint singles including “Don’t Turn Out the Lights.” The group is overseas on the European leg of their tour. But don’t ignore the power behind the fans of Mindless Behavior. The group, which has actually toured with the Backstreet Boys, just released the single “Hello” in March. Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. One night when I got home from school I got a call from my friend Eliora. She was like, “Kayla! Justin is in NYC tonight for Fashion Night Out!” I immediately jumped on the next train to the city to meet her. We took a taxi down to where the stores were, that were having events. We had heard earlier in the day that Justin was going to be at Dolce & Gabbana but we were not sure if he was going to be there that night. We decided to go into a bunch of stores just to check if he was in any of them. We asked various people if they knew where he was that night and no one seemed to know. We finally made it down to the block of Dolce & Gabbana. We saw a group of people in the front of the store taking pictures. We walked over and saw Ashley Benson. Our first reaction was, OMG she is going out with Ryan Good. We took a picture with her and started to walk around the bend looking for Justin. As we turned the corner, we saw Ryan Good, as in Justin’s swag coach! We went absolutely CRAZY. We took a picture with him then asked where Justin was. He told us he had just left, pointing down the block. We saw his car driving away. We were a little bummed out but still happy we got to see Ryan. Now that we knew Justin had left, we did not know what to do. We stood there for a while then overheard Ryan say to Ashely that Allison was waiting by the car. We immediately freaked out and knew that he was talking about Allison Kaye. We turned the corner once again and see Allison. We once again, went CRAZY! We asked her for a picture as well and she said sure. We talked to her a bit until we saw a few girls taking a picture with someone in the corner of our eye. We turn to our left and Scooter is standing there. We could not believe it. We tapped Scooter on the back and told him how much we loved him. He thanked us but unfortunately, he was in such a rush that he apologized and told us he had no time for a picture with us. They all got in the car and waved to us as they were leaving. This was one of the best nights ever! Although we were unable to meet Justin, it was amazing to meet his crew, the people that help make Justin be the best he can be. It was so unforgettable. -@KeRnKr @Ayelio Read the original: One night when I got home from school I got a call from my…

Cakes and sheikhs? Forget about “Rockin’the Casbah” Yeezy will be ‘rappin’ it instead! The rapper is making plans for his next film project ala “Runaway” set in the glamorous sands of either Abu Dhabi, Dubai or Qatar. Here’s the details: The Observer has learned that Kanye West, the multi-platinum rapper and Twitter super-user recently sent representatives to the Persian Gulf region to scout locations for a short film. The project, which will take a form much like his 30-minute “Runaway”—a hybrid art film and music video starring model Selita E. Banks that premiered on MTV in October, 2010—is to be filmed in March. Sources tell The Observer that Mr. West sent members of his team to meet with film companies and government officials based out of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha Qatar to explore the idea of a production. A number of local municipal officials and film companies are said to be engaged in what was characterized as a heated bidding war for the contracts involved in bringing Mr. West’s vision to life. “In Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha all of the film initiatives are government controlled,” one source involved in the talks explained. “A bidding war is going on between various government entities and private investors to fund the film. There’s pretty intense rivalry here between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar. They all want to claim the film as their own and take credit for generating the publicity.” Part of the reason for the excitement? The story—plot details of which were not divulged by one source “out of respect for Kanye’s ambition”—was conceived by the rapper explicitly to take place in the Gulf. He is said to have fallen in love with the region after a concert performance last year in Abu Dhabi. Mr. West’s creative team is moving to the region for a few weeks, as part of an effort to create an “authentic” depiction of the culture. They plan to utilize local talent and production crews, and are said to be eager to portray the locales and their cultures in a positive light, mindful of recent productions that ran afoul of local sensibilities (2011′s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was cited as one example). “His reps seemed genuinely enthusiastic about creating a piece which highlights the culture accurately,” our source explained. “There’s a lot of preconceived notions and stereotypes about Emiratis and Qataris, which Westerners often play up. They discussed how Kanye is looking to bridge the cultural divide and break misconceptions.” Mr. West also reportedly plans to cast some local royalty, as “many of the Sheikhs like to be flashy and appreciate celebrity notoriety.” Sheikhs eh? Wonder if cakes and harems are included, or if that is the kind of stereotype these guys aren’t feelin? This sounds so exciting. We can’t wait to see Yeezy work his film magic in the Middle East. From Muppets to magic, MTV counts down the top films of the year. By MTV News staff Shailene Woodley, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence Photo: Fox/ Columbia In 2011, Daniel Radcliffe brought the “Harry Potter” franchise to a firecracker of an ending after a decade bewitching the multiplex. Ryan Gosling played kissy-face with Carey Mulligan in an elevator, then turned around and smashed a dude’s skull in. Kristen Wiig made us laugh, Martin Scorsese made us gasp, and Kermit the Frog made us want to sing along. Memorable moments, all. But what makes a great film — what makes it one of the best of the year — is not just a buzzworthy few seconds here and there, but a moviegoing experience packed with them. How, then, do we pick the Best Movies of 2011? How do we weigh Joe Cornish’s genre-busting directorial debut against Matthew Vaughn’s rescue job of our favorite comic book mutants ? Do we favor George Clooney’s ability to elicit laughs in the most tragic of circumstances , or do we bow down to the staggeringly raw performance by Rooney Mara? Those are questions no one person could answer. So we gathered a roundtable of the savviest minds at MTV to discuss, debate, argue and occasionally curse about everything that went down at the multiplex this year: Eric Ditzian, Josh Horowitz and Amy Wilkinson of MTV Movies and Kevin Polowy and Brooke Tarnoff of NextMovie. In the end, we came up with our 10 picks: 10. “Attack the Block” In a year filled with alien-invasion movies from the likes of Michael Bay and J.J. Abrams, it says a lot that Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish’s little indie that could, “Attack the Block,” was the best of the bunch. Taking science fiction for a ride through the gang-ridden streets of South London results in a wildly inventive and hilarious twist on the genre, complete with what has to be the absolute best creature design seen in any movie all year. Believe, bruvs: This suspenseful, action-packed and endlessly charming movie was the sci-fi flick of 2011. Allow it. — Josh Wigler 9. “The Descendants” “The Descendants” meant a change of pace for its star George Clooney. His character, Matt King, couldn’t use Clooney’s trademark charm to fix his broken family after a boating accident takes away his wife and the mother of his two teenage daughters. The Clooney we saw was not the suave movie star, but a confused schlub, figuring things out as he goes. The result is a complex and emotionally honest film that would be sad if it weren’t so hilarious. — Kevin Sullivan 8. “50/50” Harrowing, heartbreaking and at times hilarious, “50/50” is perhaps the most honest onscreen portrayal of cancer ever. And it’s one you’ll actually want to watch. The film follows 27-year-old Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he’s diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, battling the disease with the help of friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) and therapist-in-training Katherine (Anna Kendrick). Based on the real-life experience of Rogen’s friend Will Reiser (who penned the screenplay), “50/50” doesn’t apologize for finding the funny in a bad situation. And that’s why we like it. — Amy Wilkinson 7. “The Muppets” It’s “The Muppets” for the new millennium: Kermit and friends return to theaters after a painful 12-year absence, updated for a new generation by writer/co-star/”it” schlump Jason Segel and songs from “Flight of the Conchords” star Bret McKenzie. If the story starts off a little depressing — the Muppets have gone their separate ways and their studio is falling apart — that’s nothing a little choreographed dancing, Amy Adams and a chicken chorus can’t fix. — Brooke Tarnoff 6. “X-Men: First Class” Matthew Vaughn’s prequel had a lot of things working against it, namely Bryan Singer’s two “X-Men” films and the talented actors in those films who are already associated with the classic Marvel mutants. Vaughn smartly found a way to use that to his advantage, giving fans nods to Singer’s films through well-placed cameos while laying the foundation for an entirely new franchise based on the characters’ backstories, anchored by the very talented and bromantic James McAvoy as Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr/Magneto.” — Kara Warner 5. “Hugo” With so many different ways to see a movie, the magic of going to a theater and sitting in the dark seems like an outdated idea. Martin Scorsese attempted to recapture the feeling that made the movies such a special thing in the first place with “Hugo.” Through the story of an orphan boy living in a Paris train station, “Hugo” dives into the creation of movies and reminds us all of why the movies are a place to see dreams come true. — K.S. 4. “Bridesmaids” “Bridesmaids” is one of those rare comedic gems in which everything worked: The crazy talented cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy in a killer breakout performance; the one-liners, many of which were ad-libbed; that unpleasant-but-hilarious scene at the bridal store; Jon Hamm playing a d-bag — it was all so good and so funny. And not just funny for women, funny for everyone, to the tune of a $169 million box-office gross. — K.W. 3. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” All good things must come to an end. When it came time for the “Harry Potter” series to fulfill that old adage with this summer’s “Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” it wasn’t just a good thing. It was — if you’ll forgive our sappiness — a magical thing. Watching Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint grow into their heroic owns over the past decade has been a thrilling ride filled with tragedy and hope, despair and triumph, death and life. It wasn’t just the best “Potter” movie of all time; it was one of the best movies of the year. — J.W. 2. “Drive” In a movie year that could easily have been renamed the Year of Gosling, the flasher of abs, breaker-up of street fights and all around great Canadian guy’s finest performance was as a nameless driver (regardless of what the Artists , Songs , Live Performances and EDM Artists of the year.
