Bloomberg News Hypes Balance in New Opinion Section, But Staff Suggests Leftward Tilt

Bloomberg News has taken an unorthodox step in the world of wire services, and created an opinion section that it says “will embrace a diversity and variety of opinion.” But early signs suggest a liberal tilt to”Bloomberg View”, as it's called. It will be edited by David Shipley, former deputy editor of the New York Times opinion page, and James Rubin, who was a deputy Secretary of State under President Clinton. Furthermore, Bloomberg employees are quite open about the fact that the views of the company's president, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, will be reflected prominently in its content. read more

Bloomberg’s Carlson Slams Christine O’Donnell as Brainless, But Gushed Over Primary Victories of Boxer and Feinstein in ’92

In a zinger that roused the indignation of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson cast Christine O’Donnell as Sarah Palin’s protege – but “with not a fully-functioning human brain.” But in 1992, Carlson gushed over the primary victories of current Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. Does she hold a double-standard? Co-host Mika Brzezinski was taken aback when the panel had to discuss Carlson’s piece for The Daily Beast, “Watch Your Back, Sarah.” She silently mouthed the word “bitchy” to Carlson to describe the article, adding that it was “searing.” Carlson’s piece focuses on the emergence of the Republican Delaware Senate nominee as the next Sarah Palin protege, predicting a political catfight of sorts between the two female GOP stars. Carlson labeled O’Donnell an “obvious knockoff” of Palin, “hawking her wares on the shores of the Delaware.” Appearing on “Morning Joe” Wednesday, Carlson sneered that O’Donnell lacks a “fully-functioning human brain.” Of course, there was a time when she smiled upon the emergence of female Senate candidates. In 1992, Carlson hailed the primary victories of now California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, both Democrats and both liberal feminists. “There was a rush, an exultation that surpassed any political moment I have ever known – better even than Geraldine Ferraro’s vice-presidential candidacy,” she wrote. Eighteen years later, it’s conservative Republican women who are heating up the 2010 midterm season, and Carlson can’t do enough to bash them at every turn. A transcript of the segment, which aired on September 22 at 6:24 a.m. EDT, is as follows: MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Margaret wrote a searing piece on this woman called “Watch Your Back, Sarah.” And I’m sorry, it’s a little – JOE SCARBOROUGH: A little harsh? BRZEZINSKI: (Mouthing words) Bitchy. A little – I’m sorry. (…) MARGARET: This is how we get in trouble. BRZEZINSKI: I’m just saying – “rarr.” (Imitating cat noise) CARLSON: No, I was just suggesting that – BRZEZINSKI: You more than suggest. CARLSON: Christine O’Donnell is, you know, what the Republican Party’s been heading to for a long time. It’s – she’s post-Sarah Palin. And she’s got a fully – SCARBOROUGH: (Laughing) Post-modernist. (Crosstalk) CARLSON: With not a fully-functioning human brain. (Collective groan) WILLIE GEIST: That’s not fair. BRZEZINSKI: You go below the belt. CARLSON: This is where the elites will be getting out the e-mail now to me. But, you know, she’s not, she’s not ready for this. I think she’s more fluent than Sarah Palin, in that what she says comes out better and you can parse it. But she’s taken on – she’s taken on – she’s copying her act. I mean, already, you know, she’s putting on the glasses. She doesn’t need them except for cosmetic reasons.

Eight Dems Arrested in Bell, CA ‘Corruption on Steroids’ – Not a Single Mention of Party Affiliation From Media

Today, eight city council members were arrested in Bell, California for what Los Angeles County District Attorney labeled “corruption on steroids.” Thus far, every major news outlet that has reported on the story has omitted the fact that all eight individuals arrested are Democrats. These glaring omissions come only weeks after NewsBusters reported that of the 351 stories on the then-brewing controversy, 350 had omitted party affiliations, and one had mentioned they were Democrats only in apologizing for not doing so sooner. Reports today from ABC , CBS , the Los Angeles Times , the Associated Press , Bloomberg , USA Today , CNN , MSNBC , NPR , and the San Francisco Chronicle all reported on the arrests without mentioning party affiliations. One commenter at CNN’s online story got it spot on: “I notice there is no mention of the party affiliation of the accused. I can find no mention of it in any story on the internet. This must mean they were all Democrats.” Give the man a cigar. Together, the eight city officials “misappropriated” $5.5 million in municipal funds. Robert Rizzo, the chief culprit, was arrested on 53 counts of various brands of corruption. Before the scandal came to light, Rizzo had been making roughly $1.5 million per year, even though the per capita income in Bell is roughly half the national average. Pedro Carillo, Bell’s interim city manager, released a statement on the arrests today: Given the sheer volume of charges levied against former Bell Chief Administrative Officer Robert Rizzo and former Assistant CAO Angela Spaccia by the district attorney, it is clear that Rizzo and Spaccia were at the root of the cancer that has afflicted the City of Bell. Also, it is a sad day for Bell that four current and two former members of the council also have been arrested. I am prepared to double down our efforts to continue to restore order, establish good government reforms, and to ensure that Bell is providing needed services to its residents. Despite arrests in one of the most massive cases of municipal corruption in recent memory, no media outlet could bring itself to mention the officials’ party affiliations, a fact that has been widely reported since the scandal entered the national spotlight.

Bloomberg: ‘100 Percent’ of 9/11 Families Support Ground Zero Mosque

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c Michael Bloomberg www.thedailyshow.com Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Tea Party New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg might consider checking out the polls. He’s under the impression 100 percent of 9/11 families support building the Ground Zero Mosque at the current planned location. “The family members, they do care,” Bloomberg told “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart Aug. 26. “And the family members that I’ve talked to – and I’m chairman of the board of the World Trade Center Memorial – 100 percent in favor of saying, ‘These people, if they want to build a mosque, can build a mosque. The lives of our loved ones were taken because the right to build a mosque or say what you want to say was so threatening to people.'” Even Stewart, who takes Bloomberg’s side in supporting the mosque and has mocked opponents in several episodes of the hit comedy news program, couldn’t let Bloomberg’s exaggeration go unchecked. “I think the difficulty always is, unfortunately, I’m sure there are veterans who fought over there who feel we shouldn’t,” Stewart said. “I’m sure there are family members, maybe you haven’t heard of them, who feel we shouldn’t.” In fact there are many 9/11 family members speaking out against building a mosque so close to Ground Zero, including Neda Bolourchi, a Muslim woman whose mother died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Bolourchi is one of the numerous Muslim voices opposing the mosque, a demographic the media are mostly ignoring . The group Keep America Safe featured six more family members in a  video opposing  building the mosque near Ground Zero.  Others  have also spoken out. Bloomberg said opposition to the mosque is based on politics, and suggested most opponents don’t actually care about the issue. “There’s nothing new here,” he said, referring to the fact the project has been in the works for over a year. “The difference is we’re in an election season and this whole issue, I think, will go away right after the next election. This is, plain and simple, people trying to stir up things to get publicity and trying to polarize people so that they can get some votes, and I don’t think that most of the people who are yelling and screaming really care one way or another.” A recent  CBS News poll  found that 71 percent of respondents believe it is “not appropriate” to build the mosque a few blocks from Ground Zero, including a majority (57 percent) of Democrats. A  Time poll  found that 68 percent are following the issue “somewhat closely” or “very closely.”
