American Idol’ Recap: James Durbin Finds Muse, Jacob Lusk Nods To Luther

Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina play it safe with country tunes on ‘Idol’ night that called for contemporary tunes. By Gil Kaufman James Durbin on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX The theme on Wednesday’s (April 20) “American Idol” top-seven performance night was music from the 21st century , and while James Durbin blew it out with a Muse extravaganza, Jacob Lusk took it down for a touching Luther Vandross tribute and teens Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina played it close to the vest with traditional country tunes. First up was McCreery, who sang “Swingin’ ” by LeAnn Rimes, giving it his usual dose of country comfort. Backed by a four-piece horn section, McCreery brought the whole arsenal: the bizarre sideways-mic technique, the George W. Bush-esque facial tics and the “down-home” charm. For the first time this season, though, McCreery’s shtick seemed a bit phoned-in and fell a bit flat, lacking his usual appeal. While the crowd ate it up, Steven Tyler suggested Scotty move his body a bit more when he performs and Jennifer Lopez said it was that time in the competition for Scotty to move beyond his comfort zone and show America his full range. “It’s time to pull out the big guns,” she said, noting that McC had a whole decade of music to choose from and picked a tame song. “We were expecting more from Scotty on that one. Randy Jackson served up the ultimate “Idol” judge’s dis, calling the song choice “safe.” Looking like a rock and roll shock trooper in an all-black ensemble, James Durbin went truly contemporary by picking Muse’s bombastic “Uprising.” Mentor Jimmy Iovine loved the song choice and Durbin delivered, coming out alongside a marching band drum section and wearing a post-apocalyptic shredded black overcoat. Though tentative at first, Durbin leaned into the chorus and showed nice vocal control, swinging his truncated mic stand in the classic fashion of late Queen singer Freddie Mercury and not being shy with his glass-shattering upper register. J.Lo was blown away. “I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that that theatrically, this is going to be the best performance of the night,” she said, marveling at how high his voice reached. Randy hopes JD follows that direction on his album and mixes the pomp with metal, predicting (correctly, as it turned out) that it could be the best performance of the night. You can’t really go wrong by picking a song from the best-selling album of 2011 to date, so Haley Reinhart’s take on Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” was probably her best choice so far. Iovine counseled her to tap into the tune’s heartache, and wearing a throwback red and white polka-dot dress, Reinhart busted out her signature growl and put bluesy emotion into the tune, but at times still came off a bit too chipper. Randy said he’s not only looking for a winner, but also trying to figure out what direction the singers might go in after the show and he praised Haley’s choice, even if the falsetto was a bit wobbly at times. Tyler loved it, even with the slow start and Lopez said it took guts to take on such a well-known song. “There were moments when you did … you brought a little bit of Haley to it in certain moments,” she said. After all the comparisons, Jacob Lusk wisely went with the Luther Vandross classic “Dance with my Father,” (on the late R&B great’s birthday, no less), reaching deep for memories of his own long-departed father. Looking like he was straining to keep it together, Lusk sat serenely on stool center-stage and sang the uplifting tune in his breathy falsetto, bringing power and grit without his usual over-emoting. “Luther Lusk!” Tyler enthused. “You remind me all the time the reason I love music.” After a few weeks of bland platitudes, Lopez served up another of her useful real-life artist comments, telling Jacob that part of being an artist is tapping into the emotion of a track without losing control. Randy agreed and said the vocals were good, but it didn’t excite him and encouraged Lusk to “go for it” next week. Casey Abrams chose Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe,” strapping on an electric guitar and tapping into his blue-eyed soul man for the bouncy white-funk tune. Moving spastically across the stage slapping hands with the audience, Abrams gave a performance that was manic at points, as he flashed his unfortunate scary face a few too many times, ending the song by getting uncomfortably close to Lopez’s face and then planting a kiss on her cheek. “I loved it,” Lopez blushed, clarifying that she was talking about the performance, not the soft-lips kiss and praising Abrams for taking a pop tune into the rock zone. With memories of the disastrous Nirvana performance from earlier in the season, Jackson was worried the Maroon 5 song wouldn’t pan out, but said the risk-taking worked and said Casey should continue pushing the envelope. “There’s millions of people in America that are really angry because you piss them off because you’re so f—ing good,” Tyler said, eliciting wide-eyed looks from his fellow judges and some nimble-fingered dead air from the network censors. He’s well-acquainted with the bottom three, so Iovine said Stefano Langone needed “Closer” by Ne-Yo to have the right sex appeal and strut, without coming off like begging. Wearing a romper-stomper pseudo-punk outfit complete with drooping red suspenders, Langone served up another cheesy, vocally weak performance that felt more like an over-eager high school musical solo than the work of the next “American Idol.” Expecting it to be jerky, bad karaoke, Jackson said Stefano pulled it off and smartly took his time on the early verses, even working in a few nice dance steps. Speaking for the ladies, Lopez said Langone had his swag on and worked the audience. Thursday night’s pimp spot belonged to teen Lauren Alaina, who sang Sara Evans’ “Born to Fly” with some help from Miley Cyrus’ producers, Rock Mafia. Iovine picked them to once again motivate Alaina to bring her best and not shrink away from the pressure. Working the stage like a pro, Alaina shimmied and strutted her way through the fiddle-tastic song that most of America was probably not familiar with. It was a bit of a generic arrangement and though Alaina came off confident and brassy, the song lacked the kind of dynamics needed to show off her vocal talent. Tyler suggested some Faith Hill or Shania Twain next time, while Lopez praised the color in the 16-year-old’s voice and encouraged her to go for the big notes she hears the other singers trying. “You can do that, do that next time,” Lopez said. “Try it. Try it at home by yourself. Scream, yell, in the shower, in the closet … just let it out and see how far and how long you can hold it … because you can do that!” In a huge switch from past years, when eliminated contestants who left “Idol” were rarely heard from again, the show opened with all of this year’s booted singers doing a group sing on Pink’s “So What,” with Pia Toscano, Naima Adedapo, Karen Rodriguez, Thia Megia and Ashthon Jones. Thursday’s results show will feature the return of season-seven winner David Cook singing his new single “The Last Goodbye,” and Katy Perry beaming in for “E.T.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Perez Hilton Reveals Birthday Wishes For Lady Gaga, Anti-Bullying

Celeb blogger blew out the candles at his Blue Ball Birthday Bash, telling MTV News he’ll donate event proceeds to an LGBT charity. By Kelley L. Carter Perez Hilton Photo: Valerie Macon/Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Perez Hilton had two wishes for his birthday this year. The 33-year-old blogger, who celebrated in grand Hollywood fashion on Saturday night at a Sunset Boulevard studio in Los Angeles, says that if he has his way, two things will come to pass: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way will be a super hot-selling album and teen bullying will cease. “My birthday wish for this year is for Lady Gaga’s new album, Born This Way, to sell over 1.2 million copies the first week,” he said, pausing to give off a mock-sinister laugh. “That would beat Taylor Swift’s 1.1-something!” That was actually the only kind-of-mean thing the notorious blogger said at his Blue Ball Birthday Bash on Saturday. And it could be the last. Perez said he has cleaned up his act, largely due to the teen bullying that’s been well-documented over the past year. “When there was that rash of gay teenagers committing suicide last year, and the bullying that is still going on, I was so moved. So moved that I changed how I operate on my website. When it came time to do my birthday, the idea came to me to raise money for charity and, of course, I wanted it to be a LBGT organization. And of course it was important for to me to work with one for young people,” he told MTV News. So what does that kind of change mean? For starters, it means Perez may not have to duck celebrities anymore. He’s been trying to stick to the facts, he said, and do less of the ad-libs like drawing on their paparazzi photographs. He also opened up about how he apologized to Jennifer Aniston for how he treated her over the years on his blog. “The great thing about being the new and more positive Perez is that I, hopefully, will be having less awkward, uncomfortable, negative confrontations with people,” he said. “But hey, I’m a big boy. I’ve done things in the past I’m not that proud of.” What do you think of Perez’s birthday wishes? Tell us in the comments! Related Photos Perez Hilton’s Blue Ball Birthday Celebration

‘Captain America’ Trailer: Five Cool Moments

Take a closer look at the super-soldier as we break down the upcoming action movie’s first full trailer. By Eric Ditzian Chris Evans and cast in the “Captain America: The First Avenger” trailer Photo: Marvel Before becoming the engineered superhero called Captain America, Steve Rogers attempts to join the Army five times in five cities, only to be rejected for being a pipsqueak with a ton of heart but not nearly big enough biceps. In a similar series of false starts, we’ve been treated to a slew of teasers for “Captain America: The First Avenger,” from a 30-second Super Bowl spot to a bunch of seconds-long video snippets parceled out over the last few days. Now, finally, we’re getting a shot of cinematic super-serum with the Marvel adaptation’s first full trailer . Here are our picks for the five coolest moments: The Shield … Kinda Here we see Rogers (Chris Evans) in pre-conversion twerp mode. Chased into an alley, he attempts to defend himself with a trashcan lid — a none-too-subtle nod to the red-white-and-blue shield he’ll soon wield as the Captain. Sure, he’s a scrawny fellow, but he’s brave. And as Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) will tell Steve before transforming him into a superhero, “A weak man knows the value of strength, knows the value of power.” In terms of historical context, this shot also gives us a glimpse of around when the story begins. A poster in the alley shows the date: May 29, 1943. Meet Your Super-Serum So it’s that goopy blue stuff that transforms Rogers into a super-solider. We see Erskine in the laboratory, as well as Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), who just so happens to be the father of a certain iron-suited hero played in other Marvel movies by Robert Downey Jr. The serum doesn’t look that pleasant going in, but what a difference it makes: Rogers goes from zero to world-saving hero. Captain Action Listen, it’s hard out there for a super-solider. Even when an Army colonel (Tommy Lee Jones) is driving at top speed in a convertible and the Captain looks like he’s about to jump out and whup some Nazi butt, he pauses for a little smooch from Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Pimp! Army of the Damned Check them out in all their blue-glowing glory: the HYDRA army controlled by Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), Hitler’s head honcho of weaponry and general evilness. It’s these soldiers who will face off against the Captain and his crew with the fate of the world in the balance. The Boys We’d sleep easier knowing this collection of dudes — Captain America and the much-hyped Howling Commandos — is protecting the nation. In addition to the Captain, you’ve got sidekick Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Union Jack (JJ Field) and Dum Dum Dungan (Neal McDonough). That’s a hero shot if we’ve ever seen one. “It’s an amazing costume,” Evans told us last year of his look. “Given the fact that his costume is red, white and blue, and it’s tight, and it could be kind of flash and over the top — and given the fact that the movie takes place in the ’40s and ’50s — they’ve done a really good job of making it look really cool.” What were your favorite moments? News Updates About- Justin Bieber Rejects 'Glee' Without Cheryl Cole -Justin Bieber revealed this week to The Sun that he was offered a cameo on Glee but is holding back his “yes” until the show's producers can meet his single demand:This ultimatum isn't out of the blue, however, as he's already made his feelings about her crystal clear. Now it looks like the young heartthrob will settle for admiring her hotness from behind a school desk:

‘Tron: Legacy’ Premiere Attended By A-List Stars

Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise and Joe Jonas were among the celebrities who turned up at the Hollywood gala for the sci-fi sequel. By Ryan J. Downey Will Ferrell at the “Tron: Legacy” premiere Photo: John Sciulli/ Getty Images HOLLYWOOD — An entire block of Hollywood Blvd. was virtually transformed into the computer world of grids and gladiators on Saturday at the premiere of “Tron: Legacy.” Blue lights, lasers, smoke machines, white-clad “Sirens,” black-bob-wigged publicists brandishing light discs and at least one light cycle adorned a blue carpet leading to Disney’s El Capitan Theater as hundreds of fans looked on. Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Joe Jonas, Ana de la Reguera (“Cowboys and Aliens”), Patrick Fugit (“Almost Famous”), Jena Malone (“Saved!”) and the film’s stars, including Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund, turned up to watch the sequel to “Tron,” the forward-thinking 1982 classic that pit man vs. machine in a virtual reality. With premiere production values that would make an arena rock band blush, the atmosphere was as charged as a “Tron” arena battle. “I don’t want to downplay [the first film’s premiere] because it was what it was then, but this? The excitement level is that much more and I think that’s truly the ‘Tron’ legacy,” said Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan Bradley and his computerized counterpart, the title character, in both the original and the sequel. “After twenty-something years, I’d go, ‘Well, I don’t know. If they haven’t made [a sequel] by now …’ [And then] we got the word. I was in right from the get-go.” “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski — who will next tackle the re-imagining of another Disney sci-fi property from the ’80s, “The Black Hole” — was brimming with pride now that the long-in-gestation project was finally see the (blue) light of day. “It’s been a three-year process with thousands of talented people all over the world working on this movie with me. I’m really proud of the team and proud of the film. I’m excited for people to finally see it,” he said. Garrett Hedlund plays Sam Flynn, son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) from the first film, who sets out to find his missing father and ends up transported to the world of “Tron.” The 26-year-old actor has been on something of a journey himself: He’s got “Country Strong” debuting this month and just wrapped “On the Road” that morning before hopping on a plane for the “Tron: Legacy” premiere. “It’s a wonderful night, isn’t it?” he beamed, while admitting to being a bit exhausted. Taking in the grand spectacle unfolding on the blue carpet, he added, “I’ve tried to imagine what this night would be like but, up until now, I’ve never been more surprised.” Welsh actor Michael Sheen — whom astute “Twilight” fans still recognize without the getup he wears as Aro — plays Castor in “Tron: Legacy,” and shared Hedlund and Boxleitner’s awe at the “spare no expense” vibe of the premiere and the general marketing rollout behind the picture. “It’s nice to know that Disney has so much confidence in the film and they’re prepared to get behind it so much,” said Sheen. “I’ve seen the film. I can see why they’re so confident. When you’ve got a film like this, I guess that’s the time to bring out your big guns. It’s great. I love the fact that the look of the premiere reflects the look of the film as well, ’cause that’s such a strong part of the ‘Tron’ world. I’m a fan of these films more than I am an actor in them in a way. So it’s just great to be a part of it.” The models dressed as “sirens” who stood on the blue carpet with stoic seriousness — even as Will Ferrell attempted to get one of them to crack a smile — were joined by an actress who portrayed one of the sirens in the film, Beau Garrett. She was accompanied by her parents and two best friends at the premiere. “This is crazy. It’s so fun. It’s really kind of lovely,” laughed Garrett. “[My parents] are like, losing their minds. My dad is beaming right now. So this is a trip! I had no idea what I was getting into.” Daft Punk, whose music lights up the film’s soundtrack, walked the carpet as well while their dance-music contemporary, Boys Noize, served as DJ at the afterparty. “Tron: Legacy” hits theaters nationwide this Friday. Tila Tequila And Her Fancy Breasts

Here’s everyone’s favorite attention whore Tila Tequila leaving rocker Dave Navarro’s apartment the other night in her blue Lamborghini . I’m shocked that a woman of her class and stature would be associated with a rock star and turn up at his apartment late at night. What a hussy, I expected more from this chick…. Actually that’s a lie, I expected a whole lot less from this maniac. Her boobs look good though.
