Texas Prison Inmate Gets Votes In Democratic Primary In West Virginia And all because people in West Virginia aren’t feelin Barack Obama: Just how unpopular is President Barack Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas got 4 out of 10 votes in West Virginia’s Democratic presidential primary. The inmate, Keith Judd, is serving time at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas for making threats at the University of New Mexico in 1999. Obama received 59 percent of the vote to Judd’s 41 percent. For some West Virginia Democrats, simply running against Obama is enough to get Judd votes. “I voted against Obama,” said Ronnie Brown, a 43-year-old electrician from Cross Lanes who called himself a conservative Democrat. “I don’t like him. He didn’t carry the state before and I’m not going to let him carry it again.” When asked which presidential candidate he voted for, Brown said, “That guy out of Texas.” Judd was able to get on the state ballot by paying a $2,500 fee and filing a form known as a notarized certification of announcement, said Jake Glance, a spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office. Attracting at least 15 percent of the vote would normally qualify a candidate for a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. But state Democratic Party Executive Director Derek Scarbro said no one has filed to be a delegate for Judd. The state party also believes that Judd has failed to file paperwork required of presidential candidates, but officials continue to research the matter, Scarbro said. Voters in other conservative states showed their displeasure with Obama in Democratic primaries last March. “Keith Judd’s performance is embarrassing for Obama and our great state,” outgoing West Virginia GOP Chairman Mike Stuart said. Presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney won West Virginia’s GOP primary Tuesday with more than 69 percent of the vote, with 93 percent of precincts reporting. Rick Santorum followed with 12 percent, while Ron Paul had 11 percent. Brown, the Cross Lanes electrician, went to the polls Tuesday with his 22-year-old daughter, Emily. She planned to vote for Judd too until she found out where Judd has been living. “I’m not voting for somebody who’s in prison,” she said. Among articles denouncing a University of Virginia initiative to implement a living wage for employees of the institution, questioning if Obama is “America’s Most Biblically-Hostile U. S. President?” and an op-ed slamming the GOP establishment with generous use of capital letters, RightWingWatch picks out a column from the newsletter’s editor, Ponch McPhee. In it, McPhee urges readers to encourage other conservatives to vote in November. He goes on to warn that the consequences of not defeating Obama, a so-called “ideologue unlike anything world history has ever witnessed or recognized,” would be dire. “[W]e shall not have any coarse [sic] but armed revolution should we fail with the power of the vote in November,” McPhee writes. “This Republic cannot survive for 4 more years underneath this political socialist ideologue.” A disclaimer at the bottom of the publication apparently attempts to account for this type of rhetoric, noting that the contributors do “not reflect the opinion of the Republican Party whole or in part” and are only representative of the “individual” — in this case, the editor himself. Party-goers At Cornell University Throw Bottles At Black Students Evoking Trayvon Martin “Come up here, Trayvon”… Allegedly taunting them with references to Trayvon Martin, a group of people on the roof of the Sigma Pi fraternity house reportedly threw bottles and other objects at black students who were walking by the house early Sunday morning, according to several accounts. Sigma Pi President Zach Smith ’13 said in an email Sunday afternoon that the fraternity has “figured out who the perpetrator was, and will turn his name over to police.” The individual identified was not a brother of the fraternity, he said. Cornell Chief of Police Kathy Zoner confirmed that people were “reportedly making racial references” and throwing bottles from the roof of Sigma Pi. She added that she could not disclose more information because the investigation, which is being led by Ithaca Police, is ongoing. Beverly Fonkwo ’14 said she was walking home with a friend when, unprovoked, the group on the fraternity roof began throwing objects that landed near a group walking behind them. When the people walking behind Fonkwo asked them to stop, the people on top of the fraternity continued to throw objects — including a Jack Daniels that landed near the group behind and an unopened beer can that landed near Fonkwo and her friend — she said. When they asked them to stop again, the group responded, “‘Come up here, Trayvon,’ and started making all these other racial comments,” Fonkwo said. A black teenager from Florida, Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in February — a death that was widely perceived as unprovoked and galvanized African American activists across the country. “I feel like it was targeted and racially motivated … we felt very threatened,” Fonkwo said of the incident Sunday. Meanwhile, the assailants “were just laughing at the whole situation until we called the police and then they ran inside,” she said. That may be of little consolation to Sade Samakinwa ’14, who said she saw her friends outside the house “pretty shook up” after the incident. “I think the most shocking thing was not that bottles were being thrown but that they were shouting Trayvon,” Samakinwa said. “To use that boy’s name so disrespectfully while disrespecting someone is absolutely insane.” Wow, so that’s how they really feel. What kind of sick ish is this??? An adoptive father who’s been accused of raping three boys in his care was indicted along with another man Friday on rape charges. The 39-year-old adoptive father from Troy was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on three counts of rape of a child under 13 and four counts of complicity to commit rape of a child under 13. Patrick Rieder, 31, of Dayton, was indicted on four counts of rape of a child under 13. The adoptive father is accused of bringing the boy to Rieder’s home, where both men engaged in sexual conduct with the child, county prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said. The men were introduced in a chat room and eventually agreed to meet, Heck said. The Associated Press is withholding the father’s name to protect the child’s identity. All the counts carry a possible penalty of 10 years to life. Both men also were indicted with sexually violent predator specifications that would make the sentences 25 years to life on each count if the men are convicted. Rieder’s attorney didn’t immediately return calls for comment Friday. Court records don’t list an attorney for the adoptive father, who is in Miami County jail awaiting trial on 31 counts of rape involving three boys in his care. The adoptive father was indicted in March in a Miami County on charges that he raped the three boys. A third man, 29-year-old Jason Zwick, of Beavercreek, was indicted in March in Miami County on three counts of rape. Prosecutors say he raped a boy in meetings arranged through the adoptive father. Both the adoptive father and Zwick have pleaded not guilty to the charges in Miami County. Zwick’s lawyer hasn’t returned messages for comment. Officials have said that the Troy man adopted three children, including a 9-year-old girl, and was in the process of adopting a fourth child. Authorities have said Zwick raped a boy at the adoptive father’s home in Troy. They say the adoptive father took the boy Rieder is accused of raping to Rieder’s Dayton home. All three men were arrested after an undercover investigation. This is just disgusting. Our prayers are with those poor children. East Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant scored high on the Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York’s new ranking of the Big Apple’s poorest communities. “Pockets of extreme poverty persist in the city, even in neighborhoods that are often thought to be improving economically,” said CCC executive director Jennifer March-Joly. Along strips like Bedford Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Lexington Ave. in East Harlem, wine bars, restaurants and chic boutiques have sprung up in recent years. But it isn’t all good in these hoods. Since the recession began in 2008, the numbers of children living in poverty in East Harlem jumped from 31.6 percent to 44.2 percent in 2010. In Bedford Stuyvestant, where the white population jumped 600% since 2000, the number of kids living in poverty increased from 39.6 percent in 2008 to 47 percent. Median income for both neighborhoods was also surpringly low : Families with children under 18 in both East Harlem and Bedford Stuyvesant earned about $28,000 in 2010 – compared to the citywide average of about $61,000. “You have young whites moving in,and minorities moving out. What is left behind are people who can’t afford to move out,” said CUNY graduate center sociologist Richard Alba. The re-development of neighborhoods usually comes with a spike in the price of goods and services of surrounding businesses.
