Colin Powell took a moment this morning to call out those shady Republicans who are blatantly racist azzholes… According to Think Progress: On Sunday, during an appearance on Meet The Press, Colin Powell condemned the GOP’s “dark vein of intolerance” and the party’s repeated use of racial code words to oppose President Obama and rally white conservative voters. Without mentioning names, Powell singled out former Mitt Romney surrogate and New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu for calling Obama “lazy” and Sarah Palin, who, Powell charged, used slavery-era terms to describe Obama: POWELL: There’s also a dark — a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? I mean by that that they still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that? When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was lazy. He didn’t say he was slow. He was tired. He didn’t do well. He said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is shiftless and then there’s a third word that goes along with that. The birther, the whole birther movement. Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party? He’s absolutely correct…Discuss. WENN

GOP Congressman Says Todd Akin’s Legitimate Rape Comments Were ‘Partly Right’ If you thought we’d at least be able to make it through the end of the first month of 2013 without a GOP goon making a ridiculously insensitive comment, you thought wrong. Republican rambler Phil Gingrey took the opportunity to flashback on the most hated comment of 2012…..and co-sign it. via MSNBC Another day, another inflammatory rape comment from the GOP. Republican Rep. Phil Gingrey of Georgia is coming under the microscope for arguing failed Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin was “partially right” on his eyebrow-raising remarks about “legitimate rape.” Akin, during his 2012 campaign, infamously argued that women’s bodies have the capability of avoiding pregnancy if the rape is “legitimate.” Gingrey, a former OB/GYN and co-chair of the House GOP Doctors caucus, told a crowd at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Atlanta, that he used to advise couples having trouble getting pregnant to “Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don’t be so tense and uptight, because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.’ So [Akin] was partially right, wasn’t he?” Gingrey’s comments were first reported by the Marietta Daily Journal, which posted audio of the talk. He continued, “The fact that a woman may have already ovulated 12 hours before she is raped, you’re not going to prevent a pregnancy there by a woman’s body shutting anything down because the horse has already left the barn, so to speak. And yet the media took that and tore it apart. Mitt Romney also didn’t help much. Todd Akin is a good man.” SMH. The blind leading the bling over in the wonderful world of the GOP.

Via MSNBC : Ted Nugent is known for making controversial and even threatening statements, and now he’s comparing gun owners to the civil rights icon Rosa Parks. In an interview with WorldNetDaily, Nugent said, “There will come a time when the gun owners of America, the law-abiding gun owners of America, will be the Rosa Parks and we will sit down on the front seat of the bus, case closed.” Rosa Parks became known as the “first lady of civil rights” and “mother of the freedom movement” after she refused to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Al., in 1955—a nonviolent act of protest against segregation after centuries of oppression. Nugent invoked Parks’ name in response to a question about gun confiscation plans allegedly being concocted by the White House gun violence task force. Only one elected official, a Democratic lawmaker in Iowa, has actually proposed such a plan, but that hasn’t stopped the right from suggesting the White House has plans to confiscate guns from law-abiding owners. Nugent openly pontificated on the right-wing rumor of federally-mandated gun seizure. suggesting that “the heroes of the law enforcement” would rise up against it. “I do believe that there are enough soulless sheep within our government who would act on such an illegal order, but I believe the powers that be at the local, state, and regional law enforcement would halt such an illegal, anti-American order,” he said. The gun-loving hunter also took on the media for its reaction to the Newtown school shooting. “The media and the government is hell-bent on convincing that water is dry and we should all reconsider our conclusions about the dampness of H20,” he said. “These people are out of their cotton-picking minds, and they scare Americans who are committed to logic, truth and common-sense, and real solutions instead of the insanity that I witness from our government and media.” Nugent has had more than his share of harsh words for President Obama dating back to his days as a Senator. Last year Nugent said if the president were re-elected he would “either be dead or in jail by this time next year.” He’s also suggested that the president should be thrown in jail. Official Presidential Election Vote Total For Mitt Romney Was 47 Perecent It turns out that Money Mitt’s math might have actually worked out after all….just not quite the way he planned. And ohhhh, the irony…. via THG Mitt Romney’s final vote total in the 2012 presidential election has been tallied, and the Republican challenger received – wait for it – 47 percent of the vote. Yes, it took this entire time to finalize it (you just didn’t hear about it because it wasn’t close), and Romney came in almost exactly at the 47 percent figure. 47.2 percent to be exact. Many will find the number appropriate and ironic, as Romney made waves when a secret video of him talking with donors surfaced late in the campaign season. In the 47 percent video, he said that segment of the country would never vote for him, because they’ve become dependent upon government programs. That Romney final vote is based on the percentage of all presidential votes he garnered in November, and it works out to 47.2 percent of all Americans. Quick! Somebody go get Mitt a glass of water to wash down that foot in his mouth.

He’s doing pep rallies. Obama went back to Hawaii to finish the vacation. That’s another slap in the face, by the way. He gets back on Air Force One as soon as the Republicans caved.” The Obama family arrived in Hawaii December 22 for their annual Christmas vacation. The president returned to Washington — with First Dog Bo in tow — on December 27 to resume efforts to pass a fiscal cliff deal. After a deal was passed on New Year’s Day, Obama returned to Hawaii to resume his vacation. Obama signed the American Taxpayer Relief Act into law using an autopen, a mechanical device that copies his signature. It was only a few days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a “dictatorship” in the House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal. “Go f— yourself,” Boehner sniped as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present. Reid, a bit startled, replied: “What are you talking about?” Boehner repeated: “Go f— yourself.” The harsh exchange just a few steps from the Oval Office — which Boehner later bragged about to fellow Republicans — was only one episode in nearly two months of high-stakes negotiations laced with distrust, miscommunication, false starts and yelling matches as Washington struggled to ward off $500 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts. The White House and Congress knew of the self-imposed deadline for more than 17 months and they still blew past it, as a president fresh off a strong reelection victory tested — and ultimately broke — the Republican Party’s fidelity to its tax-cuts-only governing philosophy. It took a late intervention of two Senate veterans — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Vice President Joe Biden — to rescue the negotiations. Their relationship, forged over two decades on Capitol Hill, helped move Congress to a resolution because it wasn’t burdened by the raw political conflicts of the past and the legislative fights still to come. But even those longtime Washington hands couldn’t prevent a New Year’s Day drama in the House. Boehner weathered a revolt against the bill, which played out during two meetings in the Capitol basement in which his fellow GOP lawmakers lashed out at having to accept the measure without spending cuts. After hours of uncertainty — even insults against “sleep-deprived octogenarians” from the Senate who passed the bill in the dead of night — the House gave final approval to the deal, 257-167. According to The Huffington Post , this years session in Congress has been one of the most unproductive in more than 50 years: President Barack Obama gave a New Year’s gift to returning members of Congress, federal workers and Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday, signing an executive order calling for an end to a years-long pay freeze. As of March 27, 2013, federal employees will see a half-percent to one percent pay increase, marking the end of a pay freeze that has been in place since late 2010. Congress hasn’t seen a pay raise since 2009. According to the order, Biden’s pay will increase from $225,521 to $231,900 a year, before taxes. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will see his salary increased to $224,500 and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will take home an annual pay of $194,400 after his raise. While Obama’s order made no mention of merit for such a raise, HuffPost’s Amanda Terkel reported on Friday that the 112th Congress is set to end the session as the most unproductive since the 1940s, with only 219 bills passed by the body becoming law. The raise won’t take place until the 113th Congress, meaning that outgoing members will see no effect from the order. Obama ordered the raise as he continues to negotiate unsuccessfully with congressional leaders to find a deal in order to avoid the fiscal cliff at the end of the year.
