‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’: What’s In It For ‘Hunger Games’ Fans?

As the E.L. James novel bumps the dystopian drama from the top of the bestseller list, we ask a few of Panem’s faithful if fans should give it a read. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate Katniss Everdeen and her trusty bow and arrow can no longer fend off Christian Grey and his punishing whips — “Fifty Shades of Grey” has bumped “The Hunger Games” from its #1 perch on USA Today ‘s bestseller list . And it’s a contentious battle, to be sure. Seven of the top 10 are dominated by the various series installments by “Grey” author E.L. James and “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins. It probably goes without saying that the content of these two sagas couldn’t be more different: “The Hunger Games” is a teen novel chronicling a young heroine’s fight for survival in a televised death match against 23 other kids, while “Fifty Shades of Grey” is an erotically charged page-turner detailing the sexcapades of a billionaire and his young paramour. Yet, both have managed to capture the attention of publishers, producers and pop-culture pundits. While “The Hunger Games” was busy dominating the box office to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, Universal Pictures and Focus Features (perhaps inspired by Lionsgate’s success with the book-to-film adaptation) snatched up the film rights to James’ buzzy novel for an undisclosed sum. A few weeks later, the English author was named to Time ‘s 100 Most Influential People in the World list. Full disclosure: I’ve been hesitant to pick up “Fifty Shades of Grey” owning to its “Twilight” fanfic roots and “mommy porn” reputation, but as someone who writes about both books and films, I’ll eventually need to become familiar with the life and times of Christian Grey — for purely professional reasons, of course. But is there anything in it for “Hunger Games” fans looking for another high-profile novel to devour? I asked a few of Panem’s faithful. “I haven’t actually read ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ but I confess that way back in the day, when it was called ‘Master of the Universe’ and was posted for free online as ‘Twilight’ fan fiction, I did read it,” said Hunger Games Examiner ‘s Sara Gundell. “It is a dirty, dirty story — but hey, sometimes filthy fan fiction is fun to read. And while there is plenty of ‘Hunger Games’ fan fiction online (and plenty of it is also dirty), I’m not sure ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ will appeal to most fans of ‘The Hunger Games’ based on what attracted them to that series. There isn’t really any way to compare the two. They don’t have similar themes, and the characters don’t share any similar traits. They really are nothing alike. That doesn’t mean some ‘Hunger Games’ fans won’t enjoy it, but I can’t see it having any sort of universal, crossover appeal. They just don’t have anything in common, really.” For MTV News staffer Christina Garibaldi, the saucy series served as a palate cleanser after the death and destruction of the dystopian drama. “As a reader of both ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ I have to admit I’m a huge fan of both,” she said. “Both stories have taken their audiences by storm, but keep in mind that ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ does skew a little older and to women, while ‘Hunger Games’ seems to please both male and female readers. Yet, if you are anything like me and enjoy mixing up your reading between love stories and action novels, then pick up both books! You will not be disappointed.” Then there’s The Hob ‘s Megan Scott, who says she sees at least one (tongue firmly in cheek) similarity: hunger. “I have been sucked into the ‘Fifty Shades’ vortex and am enjoying it immensely,” she said. “Anything that is getting a lot of hype and is considered controversial I’ll pick up. There really is nothing that really comes to mind that would intrigue an “HG” fan other than the common theme of hunger, but let’s face it, Christian Grey’s hunger is the different sort.” Consensus: While the two best-selling series share very little in common thematically, odds are in your favor that “Grey” may be as hard to put down as “The Hunger Games.” Have you read or do you plan to read “Fifty Shades of Grey”? ‘The Man Was a Giant’: NYC Film Guru Amos Vogel Dead at 91

Sad news out of Manhattan: Amos Vogel, whose championing of foreign and independent film changed the direction of modern cinema over the last half-century, has passed away. He was 91. Vogel’s Cinema 16 events, introduced in 1947, battled censors and opened viewers’ eyes to the likes of Roman Polanski, Yasujirō Ozu, Robert Bresson, John Cassavetes and scores of other auteurs — in some cases before the word “auteur” meant anything. He also co-founded the New York Film Festival, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary as the city’s leading light of movie culture. Over at the Web site of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which as recently as last fall hosted Vogel to kick off a countdown to this year’s milestone NYFF, Eugene Hernandez offers a nice look back at the film firebrand’s life — including a statement by Vogel devotee Martin Scorsese: “If you’re looking for the origins of film culture in America, look no further than Amos Vogel. Between Cinema 16 (which he ran with his beloved wife Marcia and which opened our eyes to Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Bruce Conner, Kenneth Anger, Cassavetes’ Shadows, and hundreds of other visionary films and filmmakers), The New York Film Festival (which he co-founded with Richard Roud), and his book Film As a Subversive Art , Amos opened the doors to every possibility in film viewing, film exhibition, film curating, film appreciation. He was also unfailingly generous, encouraging and supportive of so many young filmmakers, including me when I was just starting to make my first pictures. No doubt about it – the man was a giant.” Vogel, who turned 91 a week ago today, passed away surrounded by family in the Greenwich Village apartment he shared with his late wife Marcia, who died in 2009. Paul Cronin’s 2004 documentary about Vogel, Film as a Subversive Art: Amos Vogel and Cinema 16 , is viewable in its entirety below. R.I.P. Jennifer Lawrence In Talks For ‘Glass Castle’ Movie

‘Hunger Games’ star may land a lead role in the film adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ best-selling memoir. By Fallon Prinzivalli Jennifer Lawrence Photo: Getty Images With the success of “The Hunger Games,” it’s no surprise Jennifer Lawrence is a sought-after leading lady. With three films hitting theaters this fall — including “House at the End of the Street” and “The Silver Linings Playbook” — she has a busy schedule, but it looks like Lawrence might add another project to her repertoire. Deadline Hollywood reports that Lionsgate’s production president, Erik Feig, has acquired the rights to gossip columnist Jeanette Walls’ best-seller “The Glass Castle: A Memoir.” Gil Netter (“The Blind Side”) is set to produce and Marti Noxon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “I Am Number Four”) is attached to pen the script. Walls’ book follows her nomadic childhood as she grew up moving around the Southwest desert with her parents and three siblings. When he was sober, her father Rex nurtured his children’s imagination and taught them to embrace life. Her mother Rose Mary was an artist who would rather paint and write than be responsible for her family. When their money was finally gone, they returned to West Virginia where her father drank and stole and Walls and her siblings were forced to support each other. While her tale seems grim, she paints her parents in a loving light because, despite her family’s flaws, they played a huge role in her success. Upon its release in 2005, the book spent more than 250 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list, which was a first for any memoir. The story is a departure from the male-centered movies Lionsgate usually releases. They’re known for films such as “Warrior,” “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Abduction” and “Conan the Barbarian.” But perhaps with the overwhelming success of “Hunger Games” and its strong heroine, the company will focus on more female-lead narratives. Which ‘Twilight’ Scenes Could Use A Revamp?

As Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart go back for re-shoots, MTV News asks fans what scenes need a makeover. By Kara Warner Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Entertainment In light of the news that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are headed back to the “Breaking Dawn — Part 2” set for a few re-shoots , this week’s Twilight Tuesday posed the question: If you could have any scene in any of the previous films re-shot, which one would you revamp? (Pun intended!) As always, the members of the knowledgeable and passionate “Twilight” fan community responded to the query with gusto. Some folks want to see extended versions of their favorite scenes, some are still displeased with the book-to-film adaptation in certain areas and some requested they re-shoot entire films altogether . But there are two scenes that a majority of fans agreed could use a makeover: the meadow scene in “Twilight” and Edward and Bella’s reunion in “New Moon.” Here’s a sampling of our favorite responses and suggestions: @Cycyn: The meadow scene. It was THE ONE scene they had to capture perfectly (it was Steph’s dream) and it’s really bad. @Cordyq45: Eclipse- Bella getting on Jake’s bike in the school parking lot. Never shoulda happened. @dazzle715: The scene where Bella kisses Jacob in Eclipse, instead she would just push him off the mountain. @pinkpixiechick: Edward and Bella’s reunion in New Moon. Wish it was more like the book version. Too short and passively handled in the film. I’m not a fan of how Melissa Rosenberg writes Edward & Bella scenes. Their reunion in her bedroom (New Moon) felt very rushed. @MeganC79: The meadow scene by far. It’s the most important scene in Twilight and was completely botched in the movie. Huge disappointment. @Brendaof6: The Twilight scene when the “bad” vamps crash the game and Cullens get defensive. Liked at first but now I giggle every time! @Melly1901: Twilight’s meadow scene. Wasn’t how I imagined it. I wish they added the Twi lunch scenes between Ed/Bella too… @KansasCityGypsy: “I know what you are.” “Say it.” “Vampire.” Such bad acting. @Mama_Cougar: Good LORD that heinous “Wolves at the lumbermill” scene from Breaking Dawn. The Eclipse Forest Frolic is a close second. @robownsme: Bella’s speech at the end of Eclipse and her riding away with Jacob on the motorcyle. Both scenes were ridiculous and horrible. @maineemilyhoon: New Moon – the post-Italy scenes. In the book it’s so swoonily romantic…in the movie it’s just dull. What other scenes could use a re-vamp? Carly Rae Jepsen Answers Your Twitter Questions!

‘Call Me Maybe’ singer covers everything from her first impression of Justin Bieber to whether she believes in love at first sight. By Christina Garibaldi Carly Rae Jepsen Photo: MTV News Carly Rae Jepsen ‘s life has certainly changed over the past few months. The onetime “Canadian Idol” contestant is riding high off the success of hit single “Call Me Maybe,” and she just beat out her boss, Justin Bieber , on the U.K. charts, taking the #1 spot . Of course, Jepsen credits Bieber with much of her success , and she also knows she wouldn’t be where she is without her fans. Jepsen recently took some time out of her busy schedule to stop by MTV News and answer some of your Twitter questions. She covered everything from her first impressions of Bieber to whether she believes in love at first sight. Read below to find out what Jepsen had to say! @AmericanBiebz: We all know what Justin thought of Carly at first, so we wanna know: What was Carly’s first impression of Justin? Carly Rae Jepsen : I thought he was charming. He’s extremely talented — and, I mean, obviously that’s pretty well-known — but in ways that I didn’t realize. I knew that he sang, I knew that he was sort of infectious in his personality, I knew that he danced, but I didn’t know how strong of a songwriter he was, and my first introduction to him was actually in his studio and he played me a couple songs he had written, and I was really impressed and I was so glad, because I really, really liked him. @majojimenz: Is Justin planning on taking Carly with him on tour? Jepsen : I don’t know! We’ll have to ask Justin, but at this point we have no real idea of when we are going to be touring. @EmmaJaneGander: Would you ever do a duet with Selena Gomez? Jepsen : Yeah, I think I’m open to collaborating with anybody. I have, like, a dream list of people that I want to collaborate with. John Mayer is on that list and Taylor Swift, actually. I think she’s an amazing songwriter. I would imagine that would be a cool combination. @JustinsEyebrow: Do you think you have a certain style of music, or are you up for anything? Jepsen : I definitely have a bit of boundaries of what I like and what would be suitable to who I am as an artist, but I don’t want to put too many limits on it at the same time. Right now, I’m really attracted to pop music, I love dance songs and artists like Robyn and La Roux. And then I come from a folky background, so I would say my music is kind of a combination of all those things, but that doesn’t mean I can’t experiment more, fall in love with something else down the line. @lovedbybieber: If Carly could change one thing in the world, what would it be? Jepsen : World hunger. @shortstufff21: If you could change anything about you what would it be and why? Jepsen : I would be taller than 5’2, have some legs on me. @carlyraeheart: Do you believe in love at first sight? Jepsen : I believe in a very strong feeling about somebody, very strong lust at first sight. I wouldn’t go as far as love, because I feel like love takes time. What would you ask Carly Rae Jepsen? Nick Jonas, Michael Urie Reveal ‘How To Succeed’ In Anything

‘How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying’ stars give their own guides on being successful. By Jocelyn Vena Nick Jonas Photo: Robin Marchant/ WireImage Nick Jonas and Michael Urie are currently starring in the smash Broadway musical “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying,” where night after night they learn and re-learn how to succeed in business … well, you get the point. Given all that sage wisdom, when MTV News sat down with the twosome, we decided to have the guys themselves offer up some handy guides in “How To Succeed In [Insert Objective Here] Without Really Trying.” Why? Well, Jonas’ J. Pierrepont Finch eventually finds success at the World Wide Wicket Company, where he meets Bud Frump, played by Urie. Frump hopes that nepotism can help him win within the company, whereas Finch relies on the help in the book for which the play is named. In honor of that handy-dandy fictional guide, we thought they might have some fun writing their own guides to life. When asked about their advice on “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying,” guys broke down three key ingredients. “Well, I think #1 is just do nothing, cause you can’t try,” Urie explained. “And then #2 is you gotta do something, and then #3: Do nothing again.” While that advice may seem vague for any corporate climbers out there, Jonas couldn’t help but have to agree with it. Now, Nick was more forthcoming about “How To Succeed In Show Business Without Really Trying.” His advice? “Be humble and be good to people on the way up, ’cause they’ll be your friends if there’s ever a moment when you need them on the way down or any moment in any career,” Jonas said. “And then also enjoy the ride, ’cause it usually is a fun one, even when things become tough and take on an interesting turn.” His final piece of wisdom? “And then surround yourself with good people,” he explained. “Good people a part of your team, a part of your cast and just everyone who can help you get to the best place that you want to be in.” And then finally, we wanted to know how the guys “Succeed In Love Without Really Trying.” “[Be] patient, definitely always gotta have patience in love,” Urie said. “[Be] understanding, which is sort of like patient, but a little bit different. And then lie, cheat, steal.” What do you think of the guys’ advice in business, show business and love? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Nick Jonas & The Administration

The Casual Vacancy: J.K. Rowling Book Title, Details Revealed

J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter fame has finally revealed some details, including the title, of her upcoming novel for adults, The Casual Vacancy . It’s a “blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising” about a parish council election in a small English town, called Pagford. Reads a description of the book by Little, Brown publishers: “Pagfod is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty fa

Batman’s Codpiece and Catwoman’s Butt: Equal Opportunity Ogling from The Dark Knight Rises

Oh…my… GOD , Becky — look at Catwoman ‘s butt. Ahem . In a new promo image from The Dark Knight Rises , Anne Hathaway poses as Catwoman and shows, as many salivating fanboys have already suggested, just why the Batman sequel might’ve earned that PG-13 for “sensuality.” But wait! Why is everyone talking about Catwoman’s butt and not Batman ‘s meticulously sculpted-but-jaunty rubberized codpiece? Equal opportunity for costumed cosplay ogling after the jump, thanks to two new promo images for the July tentpole. First, we’ll start with this suggestively perky, full-length look at Hathaway as Catwoman, unearthed today on the internetz (hat tip ComingSoon ): A mask and cat-ear goggles? Leather gloves over a bodysuit also made of leather, with thigh-high boots to boot? This is one layered lady. I bet she makes that squeaking leather sound when she walks. Now, maybe Catwoman’s using her butt as yet another deadly weapon. Or maybe when you wear giant stiletto shit-kicking heels like that, one’s rear lifts naturally (welcome to the world of woman secrets, fellas). Ok, fine. Take a good gander. Now, can we move on to…Batman’s bat-junk? Behold, from the current issue of EW : I don’t know about you, but this kind of overly structured superhero outfit feels excessive and a little exhausting to look at. I can’t picture anyone toiling away somewhere in the Bat-sweatshop making every little molded rubber part of Batman’s faux six-pack, though it is funny to imagine the rationale for such a design: He needs protection… for each pack ! Do you think Bruce Wayne toiled very long over the agonizing decision to go with the muted bronze of his utility belt? How does one fit oneself for the perfectly proportioned superhero codpiece? The above image comes from EW’s Summer Movie Preview issue, which was accompanied by various Chris Nolan non-spoiler quotes and this very interesting tidbit concerning baddie Bane , played by Tom Hardy , and his unusual voice: “It’s a risk, because we could be laughed at — or it could be very fresh and exciting,” says Hardy, adding that the voice he developed was influenced by many factors, including a desire to honor the comic book character’s brains and Caribbean heritage. “The audience mustn’t be too concerned about the mumbly voice,” says Hardy. “As the film progresses, I think you’ll be able to tune to its setting.” Aha! And so we kind of get an answer in the great Bane ethnicity debate: Hardy is seemingly playing the villain true to his Caribbean/Latin heritage as written in the comics, which hardly closes the book on the issue. The fact that Bane’s being played by a white guy could conceivably still be explained away in the film; the character’s comic book origins cite a British mercenary father and a local rebel mother, which seems to make Bane half-Latino, half-Caucasian. But time will tell. For now, we have butts and junk to stare at. [ ComingSoon , EW ]
