Titanic and 9 Other Movies Some Folks Don’t Know Are Based on Real Events

James Cameron ’s Titanic is a stunningly realistic portrayal of a sinking ship , but apparently it just got more real for at least a handful of people. According to some tweets that are making the rounds, some younger Americans had no idea until now that the “unsinkable” cruise liner existed and did in fact hit an iceberg and sink in the Atlantic 100 years ago. What? They didn’t watch Downton Abbey and put two and two together either? (Note: Just like the deceased would-be heirs of Downton, Jack and Rose are fictional. Though something tells us many of the Titanic’s passengers probably had acting abilities comparable to Billy Zane’s.) Instead of ridiculing these youths for being ignorant of a fairly remarkable historic event and complaining about Idiocracy becoming more factual each day, let’s turn this into a teaching moment. Here are nine other films that depict a very real thing that happened in human history: Pearl Harbor In case the reference didn’t register at the time, there was a real Day of Infamy behind those insipid comments on Twitter a year ago about the Japanese earthquake and tsunami being payback for Pearl Harbor. Those jerks weren’t talking about the Ben Affleck movie, but a real military strike that happened. The movie that tells the sobering story of the naval base attack in 1941, in which 2,402 Americans were killed, was directed by Michael Bay (which seems like a joke but is true). Apollo 13 The three-man crew on the Apollo 13 mission really did spend four bleak days in their spacecraft after an oxygen tank exploded on the service module. What had been planned as the third manned moon landing instead became a harrowing effort to make it back to Earth safely. The drama captivated the nation on television in 1970, a time before the Internet. The Perfect Storm Before George Clooney and his perfectly disheveled beard hairs set sail in 2000, the dangerous storm that swept away the Andrea Gail fishing vessel really occurred, serving as the basis for the ill-fated film of the same name. Some of the facts in the movie have been disputed, but the 1991 nor’easter/hurricane did in fact collide in what many referred to as “the perfect storm.” The Killing Fields The mass killings by the Khmer Rouge in the mid- to late 1970s might be difficult for even Cambodian youths to fathom, but the story of journalists Dith Pran and Sydney Schanberg was very real. The two were covering the fall of the capital to the regime, and at the time, many journalists managed to flee. Pran was stranded but ended up escaping the death camps. He coined the phrase “killing fields,” the mass grave sites of which there are a mind-boggling 20,000. Alive A chartered flight really did crash in the Andes in 1972, and survivors stayed alive by eating the flesh of dead passengers. Sixteen of them were rescued two months later when Uruguayans Nando Parrado (played in the film by Ethan Hawke) and Roberto Canessa climbed through the mountains for 10 days to seek help. All the President’s Men Wondering where the “-gate” suffix originated? Decades before Weinergate, a little scandal called Watergate happened, and journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were there to reveal the truth behind the wrongdoing and President Nixon’s involvement in it. The film is an adaptation of the reporters’ book, which was based on their investigative reporting in an era before “truthiness.” Silkwood Another pop culture reference is about to make sense to many: A “Silkwood shower” isn’t just something germophobes want to take after they get off the subway. It’s a term derived from a scene in which plutonium plant worker Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) is, horrifically, contaminated with radiation. Silkwood really did die mysteriously as she planned to reveal wrongdoing at the plant in the mid-’70s. GoodFellas Based on the book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, GoodFellas recounts the dirty deeds of Henry Hill and Co. Hill, who became an FBI informant, was a member of the Lucchese crime family and was involved in the also-real Lufthansa heist, among other crimes. Hill’s still out there somewhere, being forced to eat “egg noodles and ketchup” instead of spaghetti with marinara. United 93 After terrorists hijacked United Flight 93 on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, passengers and crew learned of the strikes on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Those aboard refused to let the plane hit its intended target, likely a government building in Washington, D.C., and planned to storm the cockpit. Some liberties were taken regarding whether they successfully entered the cockpit, but unless you believe conspiracy theorists, the plane did crash in a field in Pennsylvania.

The Fundamentals of Your Own Spiritual Solutions

Find out more about Spiritual Solutions at www.deepakchopra.com Deepak provides a template to create your own spiritual solutions. The fundamental is very simple. Awareness can be contracted and you can get disconnected from the world, feel threatened. Awareness can be also expanded and you could feel connected and feel a sense of wholeness. Pure awareness is the state of consciousness where you feel one with the world. Our thoughts are only one component of awareness, but thought is not the most important aspect of how we experience reality; it is the finest level of feeling. As a start you need to determine in what state of awareness you happen to be in. Problems occur in contracted awareness. Solutions start to emerge and when you move move to expanded awareness. Love, compassion, joy and equanimity move you into expanded awareness. Exclusive ‘Savages’ Teaser Trailer: Things Are Getting Hot

First trailer for Oliver Stone flick debuts on MTV.com Thursday at 1 p.m. ET. By Kevin P. Sullivan Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch in “Savages” Photo: Universal Pictures What’s a summer movie season without a little heat? “Savages,” the movie that could be the sexiest of the season, is set to hit this July, and MTV News has your first look at the trailer. The first trailer for “Savages,” starring Taylor Kitsch , Aaron Johnson and Blake Lively , will debut right here tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET, but be sure to check out our teaser if you can’t wait and need a small sneak peek. In “Savages,” Johnson and Kitsch play Ben and Chon, marijuana dealers and fellow boyfriends to their shared girlfriend, O, played by Lively. After the partners turn down a Mexican drug cartel, which wants in on their operation, the rival gang kidnaps O and demands a ransom. As you can see in the teaser for the trailer, Ben and Chon don’t exactly take the kidnapping lying down. They start shooting. The teaser should give you a general idea of what to expect from “Savages”: guns, sex and explosions. But you’ll have to wait until Thursday to see the entire trailer. The hazy, sunburned look of “Savages” comes from the imagination of iconic director Oliver Stone , and as he tends to do, the director rounded out his cast with familiar faces. Emile Hirsch, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Salma Hayek and Benicio Del Toro all co-star. “Savages” is based on the book of the same name by Don Winslow, who co-wrote the screenplay. Be sure to check back with MTV Movies Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for your exclusive first look at the first trailer for Oliver Stone’s “Savages.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Savages.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Was Jennifer Lawrence Too ‘Curvy’ To Play Katniss In ‘Hunger Games’?

Fan groups respond to one critic’s suggestion that Lawrence’s ‘womanly figure makes a bad fit’ for Katniss. By Elizabeth Lancaster Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Fans flooded in droves into movie theaters this weekend to see “The Hunger Games.” In the wake of the highly anticipated release, much of the criticism surrounding the movie has been not about the young stars’ performances, but their appearances. Most recently there has been criticism of Jennifer Lawrence’s weight, with some sighting that as Katniss, a girl who grew up in a famine-stricken district of a dystopian society, she should have been thinner. New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis wrote , “A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss, but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission.” The statement is receiving much backlash, considering Lawrence is now a certified movie star that countless young women look up to. Putting aside the negative body-image issues the comment suggests, one wonders whether Dargis is accurate in her assessment of the actress/character disparity? MTV News asked expert “Hunger Games” fans to weigh in. Most had the same message: They loved what Lawrence brought to her character and that the scrutiny is misguided. “Katniss may not have been as thin or small in stature as depicted in the book, but it’s not unfathomable that her hunting prowess would have allowed her to have some meat on her bones,” TheHob.org’s Gabby Vittoria responded. She went on to point out that “Peeta wasn’t tall in the movie; Clove wasn’t big and brawny; Katniss wasn’t smaller than most of the Tributes. These physical changes certainly didn’t take away from the story and messages in the movie. Besides, for me, Jennifer’s acting and the quality of the film makes her weight a non-issue.” Many fans not only disagreed with the film critic but were affronted by these reviews of Lawrence. “I’m offended by this critique on so many levels, and honestly, I was shocked that it was ever an issue and that a professional critic would bring it up in the film’s review,” Sara Gundell from the Hunger Games Examiner fan site stated. This backlash about Lawrence’s weight comes in the wake of the questioning of Rue’s race in the film. The pre-teen is played by Amandla Stenberg, who is African American. In recent days her casting was the subject of racially fueled criticism by a handful of moviegoers who have suffered their own backlash. “Hunger Games” Actress Who Played Rue Responds To Racist Tweets After Rabid Fans Expose Their Hatred On Twitter

Who knew a fictional character would bring out all the closeted racists ? “The Hunger Games” dominated at the box office, taking $155 million in ticket sales, but not all fans were happy with the book-to-screen translation, voicing racist complaints about the skin color of two of the film’s characters: Amandla Stenberg won our hearts playing youngest and smallest tribute Rue — and the 13-year-old wants so-called “fans” to know that she’s not letting their racist commentary get her down. “As a fan of the books, I feel fortunate to be part of ‘The Hunger Games’ family,” she told Us Weekly in a statement. “It was an amazing experience. I am proud of the film and my performance. I want to thank all of my fans and the entire ‘Hunger Games’ community for their support and loyalty.” Amandla and co-star Dayo Okeniyi, who played District 11′s male tribute, were the targets of disgusting tweets that proved some of the moviegoers to be both racist and sadly lacking in reading comprehension skills. Though the characters of Rue and Thresh were described in Suzanne Collins’ book as having “dark brown skin,” some viewers objected to the film casting black actors and tweeted complaints such as: “Awkward moment when Rue is some black girl and not the innocent blonde girl you picture,” and “Kk call me racist but when i found out rue was black her death wasn’t as sad #ihatemyself.” We saw the movie this weekend and LOVED it — Amandla Stenburg (Rue) and Dayo Okenyiyi (Thresh) were two of our favorite actors and we think it’s a damned shame that haters are gonna hate as usual. It’s good to hear that the young acress can take all the hate in stride, we are proud of you too! Source More On Bossip! Watch Your Hands! Felix Cartal Builds On Miami Momentum With Different Faces

‘I want people to remember it,’ EDM up-and-comer tells MTV News of just-released album. By Nicholas Philippou Felix Cartal Photo: MTV News Felix Cartal is one of the most promising young stars of EDM, a fact that became even clearer at this year’s Miami Music Week , where he played multiple shows days before the release of his latest album. Cartal’s Different Faces was unleashed on iTunes on Tuesday (March 27) under Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label. Fresh off of his second Ultra Music Festival appearance and the success of his latest single, “Don’t Turn on the Lights,” Cartal told MTV News he’s been eager for the album’s release. “It’s been the last year of my life kind of putting this thing together,” Cartal said. “The record’s basically all that’s going on in my life. I want people to remember it, and hopefully it means something to them.” MTV News was able to catch some of Cartal’s set at the National Hotel during Miami Music Week, and it was obvious that “Don’t Turn on the Lights,” featuring Polina, has become a certifiable breakthrough hit. But what was most surprising was how many of Cartal’s fans could be seen singing so many of his songs throughout the set. “I play all the singles every set, and everyone was singing along today,” Cartal said. “I don’t think you can ever get tired of that feeling.” He may not have to, because his new album is loaded with potential smashes, already finding tracks trickling into some sets of the biggest DJs in the world. The record will feature some collaborators that EDM fanatics have followed, like Miss Palmer, whom he works with on “Black to White”; Miss Palmer is best known to EDM fans for “No Beef,” one of the biggest tracks of 2011 by Afrojack and Steve Aoki. Cartal also combined with Sebastien Grainger, from Death From Above 1979, and his contribution on “H.U.N.T.” pushes the album’s boundaries beyond EDM. “I think that’s what moves music forward, because anytime genres are colliding, I think that’s what helps music become something new,” Cartal said. “I think a lot of people thought that electronic music was just going to be a passing phase, and I kind of compare it to rap music, where it kind of brought a whole culture with it, and I think that’s why it’s lasted and continued to grow.” Cartal told MTV News his next move will be a two-month tour through May, touring major cities and finishing up at the Sasquatch Festival in Washington. And since he’s part of the Dim Mak family, and because he’s such a nice guy, we asked if he even had it in him to cake someone ,

‘Buried Life’ Guys Aim For Best-Seller List With New Book

‘You can open any page and something can spark in you to do whatever you want to do,’ Ben Nemtin tells MTV News of ‘What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?’ By Uptin Saiidi The Buried Life’s book, “What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?” Photo: Artisan They’ve gone bull-riding, streaked across soccer stadiums and played ball with President Obama. Now the guys from MTV’s “The Buried Life” say it’s time to cross off the next item on their list: Write a New York Times best-seller. With their first book, “What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?” hitting book shelves on Tuesday (March 27), they’re hoping to make good on that goal. Since wrapping the second season of their docu series, the guys — Ben Nemtin, Jonnie Penn, Duncan Penn and Dave Lingwood — have traveled the country speaking on college campuses squeezing in time to assemble their book. When the crew stopped by MTV News recently, they told us they’ve basically been working on “Before You Die” for five years. “When we started [shooting] ‘Buried Life,’ we wish we had something like [this] book,” Penn recalled of their pre-MTV days. “We were all in college when this thing started and we wish there was somewhere to go to talk about doing crazy things that you want to do in your life. Now this [book], if you go to your friend’s house and this is sitting on the coffee table, you know you’re like-minded.” Over the past few years, thousands of fans submitted buried lists of the things they wanted to do before they died on “The Buried Life” Facebook page. From there, the guys picked their favorite 150 to include in the book. The pages are also filled with illustrations, quotes, lessons and never-been-told stories like how it felt to play basketball with the president. As the group prepares to tackle the next item on their list, Nemtin said he hopes the book will inspire others to believe they can accomplish their own goals and dreams. “We didn’t start this to make a TV show,” Nemtin said. “We started this because we felt like we needed to do something and we all got inspired by different things that made us believe we could do anything we wanted. We want this book to give that feeling to anyone who reads it. You can open any page and something can spark in you to do whatever you want to do.”

‘Hunger Games’: Five Best Scenes Not In The Movie

We recognize the big-screen adaptation’s time constraints, but we missed these moments from the book. By Fallon Prinzivalli Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Translating a novel into a Hollywood blockbuster is not an easy task. Since there is limited time, a lot of the juicy tidbits get lost in translation. With a book as popular as “The Hunger Games,” fan criticism lurks at every turn and the screenwriters are careful to include as many of the beloved scenes as possible. Luckily, the adaptation of the book to the big screen left this weekend’s moviegoers extremely pleased. While we are understanding of the time constraints — the movie is already over two hours — there were a few key “Hunger Games” book scenes we would have loved to see in the film. Wanna win a Hunger Games special edition HP laptop from MTV News? Click here to enter! For those of you who have yet to read the book, there are spoilers ahead. (Also, what are you waiting for?! If you enjoyed the movie, the book will fill in all the missing details.) From Haymitch’s drunken fall to District 11’s respect for Katniss to Katniss’ fight to get back to Peeta, here are our picks for the five key scenes from the book not in the movie: Haymitch Falling Offstage at the Reaping From the start of the Reaping scene with Prim stopped dead in her tracks to the end when Katniss is escorted to her holding room, the audience is left shaking in their seats. Katniss volunteering in place of Prim saw quite a few audience members already in tears too. In the novel, before Effie begins her infamous “Happy Hunger Games!” speech, there is a quick scene where Haymitch is so drunk he falls off the stage. It adds a little comic relief to his introduction, but it also sets up the mentor’s troubled state and shows the effect the Games had on him years later as a grown man. Peeta’s Father Bringing Katniss Cookies In the book, before Katniss and Peeta board the train for the Capitol, Katniss gets a surprise visitor: Peeta’s dad, the District 12 baker, brings her a plate of cookies and informs her that he’ll make sure Prim is eating. It’s a touching gesture that confuses Katniss at first. She is familiar with Mr. Mellark because he buys the squirrels she hunts in the woods, but he has no obligation to her or her family. Katniss comes to believe it is because everyone merely tolerates her but they cannot help but love innocent, friendly Prim. The scene sets the audience up for Katniss’ distrust of Peeta throughout the book. District 11 Sending Katniss Bread The District 11 uprising after Rue’s death in the movie adaptation is absent from the novel. In lieu of this scene, Katniss is sent a sponsor gift containing a loaf of bread. During their training before the Games, Peeta explained to Katniss the different types of bread in each district, and Katniss immediately recognizes the loaf as coming from District 11. In recognition of the gift, she says a thank you to the district out loud. While the movie scene shows the power Katniss already possesses against the Capitol, the book scene slowly sets up the other districts’ willingness to trust her. Katniss Telling Peeta the Story of Prim’s Goat While Katniss attempts to nurse Peeta back to health — to no avail, as his leg gets worse — a feverish Peeta asks her to tell him a story. Knowing that the Capitol and Gamemakers are listening to every word, she leaves out the details of her and Gale hunting in the woods and tells him the story of how she bought Prim’s goat, Lady. After selling a young buck at the Hob, Katniss has enough money to buy Prim a nice birthday present. She passes on a hairbrush and cloth for a dress in favor of an injured goat. Prim loves animals, and with her mother’s help, they were able to nurse Lady back to health. The milk from the goat helped the Everdeens survive after their father’s death. Katniss’ ability to open up to Peeta adds to the love-triangle dynamic. The more Katniss reveals about herself to Peeta, the more she starts to care for him and vice versa, whereas Gale was around to experience these moments with her. Katniss Screaming for Peeta After the Games One of the more powerful scenes in the book comes when Katniss and Peeta are airlifted out of the arena and onto a hover craft. Katniss sees Peeta being taken away, but at the time, she is unaware of the reason. As they are separated, Katniss begins pounding on a glass door while screaming Peeta’s name. While the audience is left to wonder whether Katniss is really in love with Peeta, this scene shows that, regardless of whether it was all an act, she cares about him. Later on, this scene is replayed in front of the Capitol during an interview with Caesar Flickerman and shows that the star-crossed-lovers act just might save her life — at least for now. Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth Not Engaged

‘I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November!’ Cyrus tweeted on Monday in response to rumors. By Christina Garibaldi Miley Cyrus at her Pilates class in Beverly Hills Photo: Splash News Miley Cyrus is putting those engagement rumors to rest. On Monday (March 26), the Internet was abuzz that Cyrus and her “Hunger Games” star boyfriend Liam Hemsworth were going to tie the knot after photos surfaced of her wearing a large sparkler on her ring finger. I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to tal about! It’s a topaz people! — Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) March 26, 2012 But Cyrus took to Twitter on Monday to shoot down the rumors, saying, “I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to [talk] about! It’s a topaz people!” Speculation began last week after Cyrus tweeted a photo of her new manicure and the ring. Most recently, she was spotted sporting the large stone on Saturday as the two posed for pictures on the red carpet at Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night XVVIII in Phoenix. Even though they won’t be planning a wedding anytime soon, the couple, who have been dating on and off since 2009, have a lot to be excited about. “The Hunger Games” had the third-biggest opening weekend of all time, beating out all of the “Twilight Saga” movies when it raked in $155 million. Hemsworth and Cyrus will next be seen together on an upcoming episode of MTV’s “Punk’d,” where the former “Hannah Montana” star tells her boyfriend that two naked people have locked themselves in her car, a prank Hemsworth doesn’t seem to be too fond of. “I knew she was doing the show. I honestly thought she had enough respect for me not to do me, and she got me really good,” Hemsworth recently told Ellen DeGeneres. “Your girlfriend comes running around and she’s yelling hysterically and you see two naked people in your car… I think my instincts were pretty right.” Related Artists Miley Cyrus
