Can We Please Stop Calling Girl With the Dragon Tattoo a Box-Office Disappointment?

” Weak .” ” Lackluster .” ” Underwhelming .” ” Less-than-stellar .” Such are the general characterizations of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ‘s box-office earnings to date from observers, insiders and pundits around the Web. And now for an equally appropriate one-word response to those perceptions: ” Huh? ” I’m not exactly sure what kind of money that experts thought David Fincher’s 160-minute, hard-R-rated, unswervingly bleak adaptation of the bestselling novel was supposed to have made by now, but let’s look at the facts for a second: Through Tuesday, Dragon Tattoo has earned a little more than $79 million domestically . (In all likelihood it passed $80 million on Wednesday, but again — facts!) That would be $79 million in three weeks of release, the best showing ever for an R-rated December drama in that time frame. Or call it a thriller if you want; that still makes it second only to — wait for it — Scream 2 . Again, that’s domestically . Worldwide, it’s already made more than its 2009 Swedish predecessor : $108.3 million (and counting) to $104.3 million. Which of course we’d all expect, but from the panicked sound of things you probably wouldn’t guess it still has yet to open in 16 foreign markets — including France, Germany, Australia and Japan. ” Well ,” one particularly specious argument might follow, “the Swedish version only cost $13 million compared to the Hollywood version’s $90 million.” True. And…? Would studio boss Amy Pascal, producer Scott Rudin, and the whole Dragon Tattoo team love for it to run away with hearts and minds and half a billion dollars? Of course! On the other hand, do you think the notoriously risk-averse Sony leadership would have budgeted this at $90 million or pulled the trigger on two sequels if it wasn’t absolutely positive the film was disappointment-proof? Or that they ever sat Rudin and Fincher down for Culver City come-to-Jesus meeting: “You know, guys, Niels Arden Oplev adapted the same book a couple years ago for $13 million… Can you trim a few things?” Give me a break. Which reminds me: Who exactly is in this film again? Daniel Craig’s never successfully opened anything beyond the Bond franchise. Rooney Mara is best known for five minutes of screen time in The Social Network (though to be fair, she has been a leading lady in a number-one film ). The movie is the brand, and the brand is the book. Just because it’s the official literature of airline passengers, beach layabouts and subway straphangers far and wide doesn’t mean they’re all going to turn out for it at Christmas — not when they can see Tom Cruise hopping around the horizon in Dubai. Oh, yes — about that Dec. 21 release date. “It was too cocky of us,” one anonymous Sony exec told our sister site Deadline. “We might think about that next time.” Yeah, right . Sony and Co. had an awards-friendly strategy from the start, and it worked: Just come out of the holiday frame ahead of War Horse (talk about a movie with no stars and no brand), win some guild notices and maybe a Golden Globe, and then nail down seven Oscar nominations including Picture, Director, Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Score and Art Direction. By this point they’ve crossed $100 million domestic, and just like that they’re the hottest Best Picture-nominated wide release still in theaters. (At least until The Descendants , which is an inarguable commercial success , goes wide.) “We might think about that next time.” Ha! You do that, Sony. And if you don’t believe that scenario, then ask yourself this: Why are we facing such a consistent barrage of doom-and-gloom Dragon Tattoo stories in a period when the struggles of fellow Best Picture candidates Hugo , War Horse and even The Artist all go relatively unreported? Especially this week, with Oscar-nomination ballots due tomorrow afternoon? Let me put it this way: If no one envied and/or feared Dragon Tattoo , then we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. Elsewhere in the aforementioned Deadline report , a Sony exec is also quoted as saying the $300 million projected globally for their rapey, miserablist Scandinavian potboiler with one marketable star and a hard R-rating and a likely Oscar profile and two sequels on the way would still be “a really good number.” Really? You think so, pal? I mean, if the takeaway is that you thought you had the next Hangover on your hands, then trust me: You have have much bigger problems than the movie. Anyway. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is doing fine. Better than fine! It’s great! Glad to get that cleared up. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

First to start off, Justin is an amazing inspiration to…

First to start off, Justin is an amazing inspiration to everyone, not only has he inspired me in every single way but he also inspired a lot of people. Even if you’re a fan or not, it always good to give someone a chance. I never knew it was possible to see Justin twice, and get noticed by him 5 times on Twitter. To me, thats something I’ve never experienced in my life. Justin changed my life in so many ways. I’ve been a fan of his since summer of 2009, and still are to this day. So how my biggest experience started was when I went to  w ent to NYC with my dad on November 26th, 2010. I begged my dad to see Justin, I thought it was my only chance so then we slept over NYC & the next day Justin had a book singing at Barners and Nobles. We woke up at 5am in the morning hoping that I could meet Justin, but the line was at least two blocks around to get in. There was only a few wristbands to get in, I didn’t give up. I waited in the rain, in the cold as so many fans would do to meet Justin. As time passed, my mom called me. She told me Justin was also going to be on the TODAY Show in a few minutes. The studio was just a block away, so we decided to go there. I ran as fast as I could. As closer as I got, I heard Justin’s voice having no idea where he was. I was yelling “ WHERE IS JUSTIN?!” All around, everyone looked at me like I was crazy, of course but I didn’t mind.   Then I made a right to the studio  until I saw him.   JUSTIN DREW BIEBER IN FRONT OF MY EYES. I couldn’t even believe it myself. H e was at least 2 feet away from me. I freaked out, I screamed so much. I almost fainted, I couldn’t help myself . I’ve never seen him so close in my  life . T he police told us to back off but we didn’t because we where near the window. I didn’t move at all, I wanted to stay there and see my hero in front of me. I  waved and gave him the heart sign. Everyone was tying to get his attention. I got his eyes looking at me, he smiled at me. It might seem stupid for making a big deal when a superstar looks at you, but when you are the only girl standing there, it’s amazing to know its was  YOU .  I was the happiest day of my life. I came on the back running and screaming on the interview, if you look closely at the pic i posted above. At then end, I never met Justin at the book singing but I did almost get in. Ryan Good , yes Ryan Good his old swag coach was standing right in front of the store. No one realized him really but me and a few girls. I remembered I had a small letter written to Justin about everything and how much he has inspired me. I took a picture with Ryan and gave him my note , he was nice enough to not place the note anywhere but he put it inside his jacket pocket and said “I’ll put it right here, so I wont forget and give it to him.” Once more, I was the happiest girl ever. I know God did things for a reason, and I thank him everyday. I left NYC that night smiling going home. Never knowing all of this would happen, to this day I still wish to meet him. I haven’t gave up and never will. Dream big & NEVER SAY NEVER. The most unexpected things can happen if you have faith, Belieb. -@bieberhardcore (Alessandra) Visit link: First to start off, Justin is an amazing inspiration to…

Want To Look Younger & Be Wrinkle-Free? Eat Less Sugar!

Read the rest here:

This is going to be hard to hear, but the truth is, for those of us working to combat the aging process, sugar is a formidable enemy. I know it tastes really good and we’re conditioned to love it, but unfortunately, the sweet stuff pillages our skin’s elasticity . What’s even worse is that pigging out on sugar can make us deathly ill and dangerously fat. Sorry folks, but we’ve had our fun fling with sugar; time to kick it to the curb. Let’s be real though, most of us (myself included) will never be able to get over sugar entirely. We’re going to creep back to it, ’cause the stuff is just so good. But, we really have to learn to keep it to minimum if we care about our health and youth. Here’s why: Sugars (ALL sugars, even natural sweeteners like agave, honey, and maple syrup) raise our blood glucose level. Natural sugars are a little better for us, because they raise it less, or more slowly, and they do contain some nutrients (white sugar has none), but, all sugars raise the blood sugar level and that is a problem… According to anti-aging specialist Dr. Nicolas Perricone, a spike in our blood sugar level causes inflammation on a cellular level, which causes our skin to wrinkle. Did he say wrinkle ? Sugar gives us wrinkles? Yes, it does . Time for us to drop the donuts. Back away from the Krispy Kreme. Dr. Perricone is hardly alone in his assertion about sugar and wrinkles. Because I read books and articles on anti-aging as frequently as most of us check Facebook and Twitter, I know that many of the anti-aging doctors including Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Howard Murad, Dr. Jessica Wu and Dr. Adrienne Denese advise us to avoid sugar. Dr. Wu, a Beverly Hills dermatologist, says: “Glucose actually eats away at your skin’s collagen and elastin .” The horror. Here’s the science behind the claim: When our blood sugar spikes quickly and repeatedly, the sugar attaches to the proteins (collagen and elastin) in our skin, rendering them stiff and inflexible . This process is called “glycation.” These harmful sugar molecules form compounds called “advanced glycation end-products,” or AGEs. As these “AGEs” accumulate they damage adjacent proteins, which leads to sagging skin, and wrinkles. This is sad news for those of us who just can’t go without something sweet. I’m sorry, but life is not worth living without my daily dark chocolate! (It’s okay, we can indulge in a little .) But, if you’re serious about staying young-looking, even as you move into middle-age, you have got to consider cutting back your sugar intake considerably. Now, you might be saying some of the same things I said myself at first: “I’m not gonna worry about this. I have good genes. My mother ate sugar and she still looks good. Black don’t crack.” I hear you. If wrinkles aren’t enough to get you off the sweet stuff, though, I’ve got more for you and the news gets worse. In April of 2011, The New York Times published an article called “Is Sugar Toxic?” written by Gary Taubes. The article discussed the work of a hormone specialist, Dr. Robert Lustig, who presented a lecture in 2009 called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” which I highly recommend. You can find it on Youtube. Lustig’s research concludes that sugar is, indeed, toxic and that it is not only aging us , it’s making us sick and fat . His evidence, which includes statistics on diabetes and obesity levels since the “low fat” craze began, is compelling. Processed “fat free” foods generally contain more sugar , which helps make them taste better after all the delicious fat has been removed. Sugar and its evil twin High Fructose Corn Syrup , which is ubiquitous in processed foods and beverages, is not just bad for us; according to Lustig, it’s a POISON akin to alcohol and cigarettes. I knew that too much sugar could contribute to diabetes, but Lustig’s research found that sugar consumption also leads to heart disease, hypertension and many common cancers as well. Astonishing, isn’t it? If I didn’t know people who’ve had heart disease, hypertension and cancer I might be disinclined to believe this. But knowing the dietary habits of friends and family who have been victims of these conditions makes me less skeptical. Each of them ate sugar with abandon. Another surprising and disheartening thing I learned via Lustig is that fruit juice isn’t as good for us as we thought. Whole fruit is much better than juice, because  whole fruit contains fiber which helps keep it from suddenly spiking our blood sugar level. Fruit juice has a lot of sugar, with no fiber to mitigate it. Too much of it can raise the blood glucose level as fast as regular sugar. Even if you aren’t convinced of the correlation between sugar and diseases, the fact that it speeds up the aging process has been accepted in the anti-aging community well before Lustig’s 2009 lecture. Doctors overwhelmingly agree that sugar and HFCS cause inflammation and inflammation is an enemy to our skin. Omitting sugar from our diets entirely is probably never going to happen, because even fruits, vegetables and whole grains turn to glucose (the type of sugar that fuels glycation) when digested. And we’re never giving up chocolate, right? Of course not. But we can cut back. An article in Prevention, written by Karen Repinski recommends the following guidelines: “Keep added sugar to no more than 10% of total calories. If you’re a 45-year-old woman of average height (5-foot-4), that’s 160 calories (or 10 teaspoons) from added sugar–about the number in one 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola or six Hershey’s Kisses. By comparison, the average American consumes 31 teaspoons per day of added sugar, or the equivalent of 465 calories.” So, if you’re among those who can’t live without regular sugar, follow her guidelines. Processed sugar doesn’t do it for me, because it’s got no health benefits at all, but I do like honey, maple syrup and agave, so I’m trying to stick to no more than 160 calories per day from those. I also recommend Stevia , which is a natural sweetner (made from a plant) that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals. Stevia has very few calories and it’s recommend by Dr. Wu, author of Feed Your Face, and also by by Dr. Howard Murad, author of The Water Secret . Other than Stevia, most anti-aging specialists do not recommend artificial sweeteners, like Equal, because the chemicals in them cause us to crave sweets. Here are some recommendations: 1. Read labels and check for sugar in prepared foods. Don’t eat foods that contain high fructose corn syrup . This is easier said than done, because it’s in so many things, but if you eat fewer processed foods and more whole foods, you can avoid it. 2. Consider omitting sodas from your diet. Instead drink water, carbonated water with a splash of lemon or lime, tea, or coconut water. 3. Stop adding processed sugar to food and beverages. Replace it with honey, agave or maple syrup, but use the least amount your taste buds will allow. 4. Drink less fruit juice (which is all sugar, no fiber) and eat the whole fruit instead. Or make smoothies from low sugar fruits, like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. 5. Eat fewer high glycemic carbohydrates like white flour, white rice and pasta. Instead, eat whole grains, like brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa or whole wheat pasta. Sorry to have been the bearer of bad news. The fact that sugar is so damaging to us is hard to accept. Sugar has comforted us throughout our lives and it’s immensely difficult to revise our view of it and to curb our habit of consuming it without worry. Still, knowledge is power and it is empowering to know the consequences of what we feed ourselves. That said,  I’m not suggesting that we live joyless, abstemious lives never eating anything fun and sweet. Just cut back and eat less sugar. You know you’ll be better off if you do, even if you’d rather not hear it. Wishing you good health and great beauty. XXL Magazine Names Top 10 Hip-Hop Books

Read the original:

Since it’s inception, hip-hop has infiltrated more than neighborhood boomboxes.  As of late, hip-hop has turned it’s eye towards dominating the literary world. Decoded written by Jay-Z and dream hampton hit the New York Times’ Best Sellers List in the fourth quarter of last year and remained there for quite some time. Following the trend, rappers have started putting out their own literary works. XXL Magazine took notice and created a list of the Top 10 Hip-Hop Books. The Urban Daily is especially proud because our Chief Content Officer Smokey D. Fontaine co-authored an entry. He and DMX collaborated on E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX . Here’s what XXL had to say about our friend and boss: It was DMX’s passion and revealing honesty that helped the Ruff Ryder thrive as an artist in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and those same factors ensured that his book, E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX (Harper Collins), was as gripping as the emotional prayers heard on his albums. The autobiography focuses more on the man than on his music, with the Dark Man opening up about violence, imprisonment, familial neglect and building his family during his formative years. The unpredictability that has marked much of the Yonkers rapper’s career was, unsurprisingly, also present during the writing process. What ensued for co-author Smokey D. Fontaine was months on the road, hundreds of hours of tape and full immersion in DMX’s everyday life. “I carried a micro-cassette [recorder] in my pocket everywhere we went. Had my hand in my pocket. We’d be in conversation, whenever we started getting into it, I’d press record,” Fontaine says. “We never had one scheduled time to sit down and talk about his life. It was all fly-on-the-wall. It was all completely organic.” Like X. Check out the rest of the list at XXL.com . ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ Is MTV’s Best Movie Of 2011!

You won’t see a film all year that holds you like David Fincher’s thriller. By Eric Ditzian Roonie Mara in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” Photo: Columbia TriStar It was our fault for underestimating David Fincher. Honestly, though, we weren’t the only ones going, “Wait, really?” when the Oscar-nominated helmer (who got straight-up robbed by the Academy last year in the Best Director category) cast his sweet, dimpled, couldn’t-even-really-intimidate-a-tech-nerd “Social Network” actress Rooney Mara as hard-edge hacker Lisbeth Salander in his adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Then, this past January, we got our first look at Mara in character : She was Salander. And we were wrong, wrong, wrong. How do you say “mea culpa” in Swedish? Maybe like this: “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is MTV’s Best Movie of 2011 ! The movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet (that’ll happen on December 20), but trust our panel of experts on this one, OK? For all the sizzling cool of “Drive” and all the 3-D majesty of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” you won’t see a film all year that holds you — that’ll haunt you — like “Dragon Tattoo.” Based on Stieg Larsson’s international best-selling crime thriller (you know, the one half the people in any subway car in any city in the world are reading at any given moment), Fincher’s film followed up on the Swedish original, a critical and fan fave in its own right. What these three fictional treatments have in common, of course, is the story: Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced journalist, is hired to investigate a decades-old missing-persons case. He convinces Salander, a motorcycle-driving ward of the state who’s not adverse to violent confrontations with anyone who crosses her, to assist in the search. Where Fincher separates and ultimately distinguishes his picture, then, is not in plot particulars (though he and writer Steven Zaillian do take a few liberties, especially with the ending), but in how he unfurls the story. Moviegoers might never need to travel to Sweden after watching his “Dragon Tattoo,” so fully does Fincher immerse viewers in an atmosphere of foggy Nordic islands and gritty Stockholm back alleys. There’s really no sense arguing: David Fincher is the finest working director in Hollywood. He’s also one hell of a casting director. There could be no other English-language choice for Blomkvist than Daniel Craig . Fincher fought for Mara against the wishes of his studio, even as A-listers like Scarlett Johansson competed for the role. To say Mara transformed herself to play Salander doesn’t quite capture the enormity of what the actress pulled off — butchering her hair, piercing her body, shedding weight, picking up a Swedish accent and almost re-sequencing her DNA to create the character. We’d say she came as close to becoming Salander as anyone born outside of Scandinavia could possibly be, if we hadn’t already seen Noomi Rapace’s impressive performance in the Swedish original and been sure Mara’s is the more absorbing portrayal. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is by no means a prefect film. It drags at times. It’s probably confusing to anyone who hasn’t read the book and committed the names of the huge cast of characters to memory. The ending, regardless of Fincher’s tweaks, remains a letdown. But these are quibbles. Let the Oscars and Globes anoint a silent black-and-white film as their favorite of the year. MTV knows “Dragon Tattoo” is the Best Movie of 2011. See for yourself on December 20. Stick with MTV as we count down the Best of 2011 , including the top Artists , Songs , Live Performances and EDM Artists of the year.
