‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Sean Bean On Playing ‘A Good Man For A Change’

Bean plays Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark in upcoming HBO drama. By Kara Warner Sean Bean in “Game of Thrones” Photo: Helen Sloan/ HBO The series premiere is still months away, but it’s never too early to talk about HBO’s upcoming epic “Game of Thrones,” based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire.” It’s a loaded, layered drama, but to summarize, think one part sword-wielding medieval fantasy, a la “Lord of the Rings,” and one part sex-charged fight for power, like “The Tudors” or “The Sopranos.” MTV News recently caught up with a few key cast members at the Television Critics Association press tour, where young star Emilia Clarke revealed the hazards of shooting racy scenes. We also spoke to actor Sean Bean, a veteran of sorts when it comes to the fantasy genre, although usually in roles of a villainous nature. In “Game of Thrones,” Bean plays Eddard “Ned” Stark, a noble commanding officer and Lord of Winterfell, the northernmost territory in Martin’s fictional world. Given Bean’s resume, particularly his work in “Lord of the Rings,” we asked the English actor whether he had any reservations in taking on another role in the fantasy genre. “I seem to be quite drawn to the medieval, magical fantasies, as it were,” he said. “It was such a good part, and I read the book and the character, and I just really wanted to play it, so I didn’t have any doubts whatsoever,” Bean assured us. He said diving into the world of “Thrones” was a completely new experience. “I wasn’t aware of the books at first, and I wasn’t aware of how big a following it had,” Bean admitted. “And then when I realized it, I talked to David Benioff, the writer, who I worked with on ‘Troy.’ He’s a great guy, does some great dialogue, and it’s just a wonderful production.” Bean went on to say that HBO’s involvement sweetened the deal. “Knowing you’ve got the backing of HBO and the quality of them, I thought, ‘Wow, this is a great role,’ ” he said. “[Ned is] a good guy as well, a good man for a change for me,” he said with a smile. Snooki Asserts She Co-Wrote Novel ‘Shore Thing’

‘Jersey Shore’ star tells ‘Today’ show that the book is ‘all my own language.’ By Jocelyn Vena Snooki Photo: Josh Kessler Snooki is always quick to point out that her book, “A Shore Thing,” is a novel, and that the novel’s two leading ladies are based on herself and her “Jersey Shore” bestie, JWoww. And for the haters who think she had nothing to do with actually writing the book, she says, think again. “I did [write it] because if you read it, you’ll know [by] the first page I wrote it ’cause it’s all my own language,” she said when she stopped by the “Today” show on Tuesday (January 11). “I had a co-writer [Valerie Frankel] help me. … I wanted to do a story about the Jersey Shore. People probably expect it to be a biography, so I wanted to surprise everybody with a novel.” So, how does Snooki boil the book down? “It’s pretty much like the show, but you’re reading it,” she said. “It took me, like, three months just because we had the idea before I went to the season that’s airing now and then I had to write it while [shooting the season]. “I don’t think it’s fair [how people judge me], but then again, that’s what you see on the show. But I’m not like that all the time … yeah on the show, of course [I’m a party girl], but I’m not like that all the time.” Not only is Snooki out promoting her book, she’s also dishing about her show, which is currently airing all new episodes shot at the Jersey Shore. “I would say this is the least amount of [physical] fighting that we’ve done … we try and stay away from that but it’s really hard,” she said. “[My] 15 minutes [of fame] was, like, a year ago so … hopefully my brand [will still be around years from now],” the reality star continued. “I have my Snooki slipper line, my jewelry line and my book, and I’m working on my clothing line. I’m being smart about it.” Watch “Jersey Shore” Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: ‘Jersey Shore’ Related Photos Jersey Shore (Season 2) | Snooki

Garrett Hedlund Recalls Last Night Of ‘On The Road’

‘It’s all kind of a blur,’ actor recalls of making the film. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News Garrett Hedlund might have been treated to Kristen Stewart’s cooking during the filming of “On the Road,” but it was another memorable meal that the “Country Strong” star recalled from the last night of working on the film that sounds like it could have been pulled right from the Jack Kerouac novel. “It’s all kind of a blur,” he told MTV News. “The last night that I was in San Francisco, Carolyn Cassady, who’s the actual Camille in the book, she’s 89 years old [and she] came down to San Francisco to meet with us. A lot of the family members came down and we got to all have dinner together.” What Hedlund most wondered was if he would pass the test to play the role. “You’re wondering if you’re going to be so harshly, critically judged,” he recalled. ” … She was just so wonderful and so genuine to all of us and so happy to be there. At the end of the dinner, me and Sam Riley … walked her hand in hand up to Vesuvio’s, the bar where all these guys used to drink at. I remember the sole of her shoe had sort of come undone and started flapping, but I took off my boot and took off one of the socks and put it over the shoe so it intacted the sole. So we kept on walking. It’s such an incredible, mind-blowing night.” That night was a culmination of all the hard work Hedlund and the crew had put into taking such a beloved text and adapting it for the big screen. ” ‘On the Road’ has been the last sort of four years of my life. It’s been doing the research,” he said. “I just feel it’s just an honor to be able to play Dean Moriarty and Neal Cassady and such a rich, rare character. Just to be involved in a project that deals with the Beat Generation, and there’s so much to learn and so much to be inspired by.” Check out everything we’ve got on “On the Road.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Why Kim Kardashian Posed for Playboy

There’s only one thing Kim Kardashian has done more often than pose nude: talk about posing nude. Through the years, the realty star has blamed her mother for forcing her to bare it all in Playboy in 2007, and also claimed she regrets the shoot because it made her feel uncomfortable . Now, in the February issue of Glamour , Kardashian takes on a different view. She tells the magazine: “It was an independence thing for me. I was always by the book, such the straight arrow when it came to pleasing my parents and being a good daughter. I felt like this was one decision that only I could make. And I think it looks great. I’ll have those pictures forever.” Hmmm… so why did Kim make such a stink when a previously-unreleased photo from her shoot was released ? Below, we’ve included other excerpts from Kim’s interview with the magazine, including her take on her own sexuality: On her success : I’d be foolish not to take some of these opportunities that are coming my way. We all know this can go away at any moment. On her siblings : We work really hard, and we fight like normal sisters fight, and we make up. We’re so supportive of each other. We always stick together. Having lots of siblings is like having built-in best friends. On her status as a sex symbol : It’s definitely powerful. I don’t find myself as sexy as everyone thinks. I’m a lot more insecure than people would assume, but with little stupid things. When I get dressed, I’m always so indecisive. On advice for other women : It’s a process. You have to learn to accept it. You have to learn to like what you see in the mirror. There are definitely times when I don’t feel like myself, but you have to fake it until you make it. On life at 30 : If you had asked me five years ago what I would be doing at 30, I would have said, ‘Married with a kid or two.’ Not in a million years did I dream that I would be doing all the things that I’m doing.

VIDEO: At Least the East Coast-Crippling Blizzard Wasn’t as Bad as This

If you live in the Northeast, the chances are good that you’re reading this blog post from behind a wall of snow. Literally . Sunday’s snowpocalypse crippled New York, Boston and all cities in between with three-foot snow drifts, 50 mph winds and all-around treachery. Most Five Borough residents are still buried — take a look at this picture to get an idea of what things look like on the streets — but Movieline is here to remind those trapped at home that things could be a whole lot worse.

The Julian Assange Movie is One Step Closer to Existing

Movieline has already given Hollywood a list of directors who might find themselves at home behind the camera of the WikiLeaks movie — fingers crossed for Roman Polanski, obvs — and now it appears the project is one step closer to having a script. Julian Assange has scored himself a book deal! “I don’t want to write this book, but I have to,” Assange told Britain’s Sunday Times , presumably after cashing his $1.5 million advance check. ‘Avatar’ Director Has ‘Great Ideas’ For Sequel, Sam Worthington Says

Actor behind Jake Sully tells MTV News he talks to James Cameron ‘all the time,’ and expects more details in 2011. By Kara Warner Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News At this time last year, most movie talk revolved around “Avatar” and its record-shattering box-office numbers on its way to being anointed the most successful film of all time. This year, however, all the discussion has revolved around the inevitable “Avatar” sequels Fox has announced there will be two and that director James Cameron will shoot at least one of them partially underwater . When MTV News caught up with star Sam Worthington on the set of his new thriller “Man on a Ledge,” the in-demand actor (seriously, check out his IMDb lineup for proof) said he’s been in close contact with Cameron about follow-ups but that specifics will start to take shape next year. “I talk to [Cameron] all the time,” Worthington said. “I talked to him last week. I think at the moment he’s still doing the [‘Avatar’] bible, the book , and I think the book will then inspire where he wants to take it,” the “Clash of the Titans” star explained. “He’s got great ideas; what he told me about, where he wants to set it, things he wants to explore. We’ll probably talk next year, and then he can fill us in on where, personally, he wants to take it, where emotionally he wants to take it.” Regarding the sequel’s underwater setting, Worthington said only some of the action will take place in the water. “[Cameron] is going to explore that [underwater] world,” he said. “It won’t fully take place underwater but he’s definitely going to explore — same as the mountains, he can explore more, outer space [as well] — it’s up to him,” Worthington added. “He created the world.” And finally, we asked Worthington about the future of Jake Sully, specifically whether audiences will ever see his human form onscreen again. Worthington said he had “no idea.” What do you want to see in the “Avatar” sequels? Tell us in the comments! Usher’s ‘OMG’ Is MTV News’ #1 Song Of 2010!

Club smash, featuring will.i.am, tops our list of the Top 25 Songs of the year. By James Montgomery Usher Photo: Getty Images MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 has reached an end. We’ve already counted down the rest, and now it’s time to get to the best: Usher’s “OMG,” the song that perfectly sums up the past 12 months of popular music — and makes you wanna move until you can’t move no more. If 2010 proved anything, it’s that a DJ really can save your life … or at least get you to #1 on the Hot 100. After years of staring at each other from across the room, hip-hop, pop and R&B all decided to finally get in bed with dance music, and the results weren’t always pretty, but they were certainly successful. To date, only 17 songs have made it to the top spot of Billboard ‘s singles chart in 2010, and nearly two-thirds of them — from Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” to Far East Movement’s “Like a G6” — were, in some way, dance songs. In that regard, no song better sums up 2010 pop music quite like Usher’s “OMG,” the dance song to end all dance songs. Sure, it may not have matched the swagger of Kanye West’s “Power,” the snarl of Rick Ross’ “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” or the inbox-clogging spread of Cee Lo’s “F— You,” but it didn’t have to. None of those songs went to #1, after all. “OMG” did. Twice. Even among songs that managed to snag that top spot — Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” B.o.B and Bruno Mars’ “Nothin’ on You” — “OMG” stood out from the pack, mostly because of its pedigree. It’s not a stretch to say that any of those tracks could’ve (and probably would’ve) been #1 in any other year; “OMG” could only have done it in 2010, because it was crafted to do nothing else. No other song this year was as of the moment, as singular and shiny and downright undeniable. There’s a reason it was named on more ballots than any other song on our countdown and justly takes the title of MTV News’ #1 Song of 2010. And while all that is important, it’s largely beside the point. “OMG” is the kind of song that truly defies deep inspection, because it’s not exactly headphone music. Rather, it was made for the clubs, designed to envelop you on the dance floor and not let go until the final “oh-ohh-oh-ooh-oh.” And in that regard, it succeeds in spades. It is a masterful melding of R&B, and Euro dance, all icy synths and handclaps, starbursts and stutters and sing-along chants. It ebbs and flows, stops and starts, pumps and preens. Simply put, you cannot listen to it without moving in some way. (MTV’s Dee Caligiuri, who voted on our countdown, probably put it best one night when she declared: “There are so many dances you can do to it!”) And if that’s not the definition of a success, well, then I don’t know what is. A large portion of the credit for “OMG” has to go to will.i.am, who not only produced the track (I know!), but was smart enough to see this whole dance thing coming when he teamed up with producer David Guetta last year. Those songs — “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling” — were, of course, massive, but neither of them are as good as this. Given full control, Will goes off the deep end, cramming the song with every dance trick in the book — and probably some new ones he just invented on the spot. And Usher, whose career, truth be told, was sort of in need of a shot in the arm, is the beneficiary. He floats and gloats above the mix, suave and cocksure, knowing that he is exactly the right man at the right time. That time, of course, had to be 2010. Because in a year when so many big-name acts embraced the DJ, he flat-out did it better than any of them. “OMG” represents the peak of the dance-pop era in which we live, a song as undeniable as it is of the moment. We can only speculate as to what next year will bring, but there’s really no denying that, as 2010 comes to a close, Usher stands above all else, reinvigorated and ready for more. It’s enough to make you say “Oh My God,” really. How does Usher’s “OMG” rank among the year’s best songs? Let us know in the comments! MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 have all been counted down.
