Bartiromo: Stimulus Likely Didn’t Save Economy –- Fed Did; Warns Obamanomics Stunting Job Growth

While some on the left side of the aisle in Congress are getting all starry-eyed about prospects of more federal stimulus spending, the first round of stimulus under President Barack Obama may have done even less to help the ailing economy than supporters claim. On MSNBC’s July 9 broadcast of “The Daily Rundown,” co-hosts Chuck Todd and Savannah Guthrie interviewed CNBC “Closing Bell” anchor Maria Bartiromo from the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colo. And Bartiromo offered her views why the economy didn’t spiral out of control any more than it did. She said according to some on Wall Street, it wasn’t Obama’s $787-billion “stimulus” that included a huge bulk of state government bailout spending, but instead action by the Federal Reserve to put more liquidity in the economy. “Look, there’s no doubt about it – we were close to going off a cliff the weekend at Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy, Merrill [Lynch] was sold and AIG acquired by government,” Bartiromo said. “You know, I mean I think we were very close and the economy needed stimulus in a big way. It’s arguable whether that stimulus that helped the economy was really because of the stimulus plan or really because of the Federal Reserve. I think most people on Wall Street will believe and will tell you that it was really the Fed action in terms of giving greater access to the banks to overnight lending that really, really got us out.” “But you know – it doesn’t matter,” she continued. “I mean, here we are and we are still in a very weak situation in the U.S. economy and the recovery is quite fragile and I think at this moment in time, many people are worried that in fact it may not necessarily officially be a double-dip recession that we’re headed toward but we are looking at another leg down.” Guthrie asked why that if corporate earnings look strong, as they’re expected to, aren’t these corporations doing more to hire and lower the overall unemployment rate in the United States. According to the “Closing Bell” host, business is looking overseas because of the uncertainty the Obama administration has put into the economy with taxes and health care. “I think right now you have hit on the one very bullish part of the economy and that is the corporate sector,” Bartiromo said. “We’re heading into a new quarter where we will get  quarterly earnings and probably will be a better than expected. And the reason is because corporations have cut to the bone. They have cut employees. They have cut R&D spending. They’ve cut anything they can. They cut all the fat out so we are talking about enormous cash levels. What they’re doing with the cash is another question. They’re sitting on it. They’re not investing in the U.S. economy. They’re actually following the growth overseas. PepsiCo [is] building 13 plants in China. GE building more places, businesses in India. You are seeing businesses follow the growth outside of the United States. But absolutely – that is the positive. The reason that they’re not hiring right now is because there is a tremendous amount of uncertainty. And that has everything to do with the policies coming out of this administration. Higher taxes in 2011, higher expenses as a result of health care costs. That’s why they’re not hiring. ” So what can be done to encourage more hiring with all this cash on the books by major businesses? According to the “Closing Bell” host, business needs more incentives to hire and she rattled off some for MSNBC viewers. “One they could do soon is not allow the Bush tax cuts to expire in 2011,” she said. “Giving some – the end of the 2010, giving some confidence that they won’t have that added expense. A lot of people are worried about that. Now, Tim Geithner had an important interview with Larry Kudlow last week and Geithner said that he is prepared to keep capital gains and dividends taxes at 20 percent. This was very, very positive and I think that is part of the reason the market has been rallying the last three days because there was an expectation that capital gains taxes would go all the way up to 39.6 percent. If, in fact, the administration keeps it at 20 percent, I think that’s very positive.”

REVIEW: Girl Who Played with Fire Goes Through the Tiresome Swede-Goth Motions

The novels of the late Stieg Larsson are the little Saabs that could: These three posthumously published thrillers — The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest — might have been nothing more than an entertaining genre-fiction exercise, the sort of thing that might, at best, achieve some sort of cult status. Instead, they’ve become the books that everyone and their grandmothers seem to be reading, and the Swedish movie based on the first book in the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, directed by Niels Arden Oplev, became a surprise U.S. hit last year. Hollywood is, of course, preparing its own David Fincher-directed version, but those of us who are allegedly in the know are supposed to automatically prefer the Swedish version, with its dour approach to torture and violence and its efficient “He did it because he’s crazy, that’s why” wrap-up. Because the movie is long, colorless, uncompromising and, well, Swedish, it’s got to be better than any future American version, right?

Faster to Read Paper Books Than e-Books, Survey Shows

Photo by Skippyjon The Nielsen Norman Group has conducted a study that shows it is substantially faster to read a paper book than an e-book loaded onto an e-reader. What does this mean — a slowed market for e-readers? A new wave of tree-cutting as the publishing market experiences a resurgent love for the printed word? A turn around in the prediction for e-readers to be successful tools in school classrooms? A giant uptake in energy consumption as readers slowly trudge through War and Peace on their Kindles? Well….not quite. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Google and Small Bookstores Forming an Alliance in E-Book Market

Photo via GypsyFae A giant like Google moving into the e-book market usually spells disaster for small stores. Independent outlets typically don’t stand much of a chance when a huge company decides it wants in on the market. However, when it comes to e-books, the typical story might just be turned on its head — small stores and Google could use one another as an ally when it comes to digital books, a rapidly growing segment of the book mar… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Kellan Lutz Says ‘Eclipse’ Has ‘A Great Mix Of Romance And Action’

‘It’s great when Emmett’s in there, and he’s there to fight,’ Lutz tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Nikki Reed and Kellan Lutz in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Kellan Lutz definitely has the build to pull off the most intense action scenes in “Eclipse,” and the actor knows that the third “Twilight Saga” flick is Emmett Cullen’s time to shine. “I just love doing my own stunts,” he told MTV News. “I love stunt work. It sucks that I can’t rewrite the books and add more dialogue for Emmett, because I really do have more action scenes than dialogue. So it’s great when ‘Eclipse’ came around, ’cause I do love the book the best, and I think it just had such a great mix of the romance and the action and the collaboration of the two. “I love to work, so it’s great when Emmett’s in there, and he’s there to fight,” he added. “So I really just loved doing stunts.” When ideas were brewing about how to make the stunts happen in “Eclipse,” Lutz was the go-to guy for experimentation. “The producers know I like doing the stunts so much, to the point where they make me the guinea pig,” he laughed. “So we were doing this treadmill running sequence, so you’re wearing these contacts and you’re breathing in exhaust from the truck, and it’s cold as hell up there, and you’re trying to run and not pant, ’cause I’m a vampire.” The cast has been quite vocal about upping the action ante in “Eclipse.” Taylor Lautner recently revealed that it’s the most “guy-friendly” of the “Twilight” flicks. “It’s my favorite, because it’s the most guy-friendly by far,” Lautner explained. “It’s dangerous. There’s a lot of action. The romance is still there, but the action level is stepped up way more. It’s great.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Is Lady Gaga Team Edward Or Team Jacob? Monsters Weigh In

As ‘Eclipse’ opens nationwide, Gaga fans guess whether the pop star prefers vampires or werewolves. By James Montgomery Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit June 30, 2010: A date that every single Twi-hard has had circled on their calendars since February 2009, when Summit Entertainment announced that it would be the day they’d release “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” the third film in the ultra-profitable series. June 28, 2010: A date that every single little monster has had tattooed on their foreheads since this March, when Lady Gaga announced that it would be the day she’d be in Montreal to kick off the North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour , the latest run of her ultra-profitable jaunt. Naturally, MTV News has been all over both of those dates, but never have we combined the phenomena … until now. When we were up in Montreal, we asked some of Gaga’s little monsters a couple of “Twilight”-themed questions. First, do they think Gaga should contribute a song to the soundtrack of the next film in the series (that would, of course, be part one of “Breaking Dawn”)? And, perhaps most pressing of all, is Lady Gaga on Team Edward or Team Jacob? And while many we spoke to seemed to think Gaga should record a song for “Breaking Dawn” pronto (and it should be “scary,” “sexy” and/or “bloody”), the issue of Edward v. Jacob proved to be slightly more divisive. “She’s definitely Team Jacob, because he’s got a hot body [and] because he’s hairy,” Gaga fan Chiara Williamson said. “And she should totally do a song for the ‘Twilight’ [films]. … I think it would be about boys. Vampire boys.” “She’s Team Edward. … She’s all about the vampires,” Shareejah Daley countered. “Her latest video [‘Alejandro’] is more dark and vampire-y … but, even if she was [Team Jacob], I’d still love her.” It was pretty heated. But as showtime drew closer, more and more little monsters came out in support of Team Jacob — so many that it wasn’t even close by the time doors opened. And why would Gaga side with Jacob? For very compelling reasons, obviously. “She’s Team Jacob, because werewolves are so much sexier,” Evelyn Barake laughed. “[And] they’re bigger monsters than vampires.” “Team Jacob, because he’s more of a monster,” Danik Renaud added. “And [Gaga’s] whole ‘Paws up’ thing. … Jacob has paws, too.” Of course, not everyone was able to decide so easily. This is, after all, a pretty difficult question to handle on the spot. And just why should Gaga have to chose between just a vampire and a werewolf, really? “This is so hard, because in the books, you’re like ‘Team Edward,’ but in the movie, you’re like ‘Team Jacob,’ ” Ourania Zafiri sighed. “I’d say ‘Team Jacob,’ because he’s hot. Or, I don’t know. … Maybe she’s ‘Team Bella.’ ” Do you think Lady Gaga would be on either Twilighter team? Share your thoughts in the comments. ‘Eclipse’: The Reviews Are In!

Some reviewers agree with one critic who praised the novelty of a blockbuster saga centered on ‘a girl’s primal dream of being desired.’ By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Would it be an exaggeration to say “Eclipse” is the most polarizing film of the year so far? In one corner, you have the Twilighters lining up outside theaters across the country to be among the first to check out the latest romance-laden adventure starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. Those fans will line up again and again before the weekend is over, likely bringing “Eclipse” an opening box-office haul to match, if not exceed, the $142.8 million that “New Moon” grossed in November. In the other corner, you’ve got the skeptics, the who-watches-this-crap haters and the bloggers taking to the Web to spew vitriol at every moment of teen romance “Eclipse” has to offer. There will be no d

‘Eclipse’ Fans Are More ‘Passionate’ Than ‘Spider-Man’ Fans: Bryce Dallas Howard

‘I feel, honestly, pressure being part of it because you don’t want to let anyone down,’ ‘Twilight’ star says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bryce Dallas Howard in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Bryce Dallas Howard has done the mega-blockbuster thing before, playing blonde college gal Gwen Stacy in “Spider-Man 3.” Making the publicity rounds for that film back in 2007, Howard encountered many a gleefully obsessed fan of the web-slinging wonderboy. Yet nothing could prepare her for the zealous intensity of the “Twilight” devotees she met after being cast as Victoria in “Eclipse.” “I feel, honestly, pressure being part of it because you don’t want to let anyone down,” Howard told MTV News recently. “People, myself included, have stayed up at night reading the books over and over and over again, and watching the films over and over and over again, and really loving it so, so intensely. Whereas ‘Spider-Man,’ people are sentimental about it, they love it and are into it and that kind of stuff. Whereas this is passionate.” Adding on the anxiety for Howard was the fact that she entered the “Twilight” universe in a controversial manner. Last July, Summit Entertainment suddenly recast the role of Victoria, booting Rachelle Lefevre from the franchise after two films and signing Howard to take over the part . Rather than inventing her own take on the character, Howard found herself altering her usual approach on set. “[T]he role and the character have been established. It’s so important to honor that in terms of the storytelling,” she said. “When I do a film, I always have all these questions that I’m asking myself, and [for Victoria] someone has mastered that and answered all those questions. Why reinvent the wheel? She created an incredible character.” Are “Twilight” fans the most passionate in the movie world? Sound off below! Book Review: Anthony Barnosky’s Heatstroke

Image credit: Anthony Barnosky/ Island Press In 2006, a hunter discovered a “pizzly” in the Canadian Arctic. Half polar bear, half grizzly bear, the hybrid animal had never been documented by scientists. Some called it a fluke—a chance occurrence signaling the unpredictability of nature. Dr. Anthony Barnosky, however, believes the bear is a product of a changing world, and a sign of things to come. His new book Heatstroke draws on his extensive research to paint a picture of a natural world that has been fundamentally altered by climate c… Read the full story on TreeHugger

M.I.A. Debuts New Song ‘Steppin’ Up’ On Blog

Rattling, dissonant track features tool sounds and a club-friendly beat. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage Though her album leaked over the weekend, M.I.A. is still promoting her upcoming ///Y/ album (officially due July 13) the old-fashioned way: one song at a time. Over the past few months — through both her official website and her blog over on NEET Recordings — she’s premiered “Born Free” (complete with gruesome, politically charged video), first single “XXXO” and the possible New York Times dis track “I’m a Singer,” which, while not actually on her album, is still a new song, so it counts in our books. And on Wednesday (June 16), she did it again, taking to Neet to debut “Steppin’ Up,” a rattling, dissonant track that would sound equally at home in the club or your neighborhood Jiffy Lube (dig those pneumatic tool samples!). “Stepping up in the club/ All tooled up like a thug,” she sings on the hook. “Rubba dub dub dub/ Aladdin no kiddin’, boy, I need a rub.” Along with the song, M.I.A. also revealed more of the eye-popping, seizure-inducing artwork that’s become a trademark of her new album promotion. When clicked on, the image takes visitors to iTunes, where they can purchase “Steppin’ Up,” along with remixes of “XXXO,” including the one featuring Jay-Z that debuted online last week. As of Wednesday, M.I.A.’s label, Interscope, had not announced whether or not they intend to move the release date of ///Y/ forward from July 13 in light of the leak. MTV News’ e-mail to a spokesperson for the label was not responded to by press time. Which of M.I.A.’s new songs is your favorite so far? Share your reviews in the comments. Related Artists M.I.A.
