Salon Owner Gives Homeless Woman Haircut For Job Interview

Many of us know that half of the battle for those living without a home is the fact that their appearance speaks of their misfortune before many of them even get a chance to open their mouths. It’s a hard-to-escape cycle. Thankfully, Long Beach, California salon owner, Teves Lee, realized this and was willing to help this sister out. Coincidentally, the woman had a job interview coming up. Teves Lee, the salon owner, said when this woman walked into her salon there was “something about the lady that told me to tell her to come back.” The woman returned the next day. Lee performed a consultation and noticed that her hair was dry, brittle, hadn’t been cleaned in a while and there was even some debris in it. That was when Lee realized she was homeless… [ MadameNoire ] Women Are Outpacing Men On Path To Billionaire Status According to a study by UBS, only twenty women in the world had billionaire status twenty-two years ago. However, that number has jumped to 145 in recent years. According to a recent survey conducted by Fairygodboss–a website that serves as a Yelp-esque platform that allows women to leave reviews about their employers—80% of women are in the dark regarding their company’s policies concerning maternity leave when they accept job offers. On top of that, one-third of women reported being disappointed when they finally found out the specifics of those policies. Even worse, nearly 3/4 of women are “very or extremely uncomfortable” asking employers about their parental leave practices… Fairygodboss also provides a maternity leave resource center, which lists the maternity leave policies of these companies since so many employers are less than forthright concerning this matter… Other interesting Fairygodboss features include the Work Confessions section, which allows women to speak openly on their experiences in the workplace, and articles that are loaded with helpful advice for working women. According to The Independent, researchers with the University of Texas, University of Buffalo and California Lutheran University found that while men find intelligent women to be attractive, they’re actually intimidated by them. To collect data about what men find desirable in women, researchers read 105 men hypothetical scenarios that involved women who either outperformed them or underperformed them in the subjects of English and math. The men were then instructed to imagine these women as romantic partners. The first part of the study was then followed up with questions about whether or not the men would date someone like the imaginary woman in real life. According to the Associated Press, the media maven recently purchased a 10 percent stake at Weight Watchers for approximately $43.2 million. The acquisition scored the businesswoman nearly 6.4 million shares of the company. As a result of the five-year partnership, Weight Watchers has earned the right to use Winfrey’s name, image, likeness and endorsement for the brand’s programs, products and services with her approval. Oprah has also received the right to use the Weight Watchers brand and logo for collaborative promotional efforts. Winfrey will also be joining the weight loss and maintenance company’s board of directors. With the television personality’s recent inclusion, the Weight Watchers board has expanded from nine to ten members. What Iyanla Vanzant Learned From Her Suicide Attempt

Iyanla Vanzant is all about teaching people to “rebuild, restructure and redefine” their lives. The 62-year-old spiritual advisor learned this lesson over 40 years ago. She was 21 years old at the time and had just given birth to her third child. Still suffering from post-partum depression, the young mother decided to end her life. “I took a bunch of pills. I was in the kitchen, on the floor, and I could feel myself losing consciousness,” Vanzant says in a clip from OWN’s upcoming seven-night series, “Belief.”… “In that moment, I saw what I believe to be the Divine Mother. She said to me, ‘Do you really want to die?’ And I said, ‘No. I just don’t want to hurt anymore.’”… She was admitted into a psychiatric hospital where she was treated for depression. There, she learned to sort through her thoughts and emotions in a healthy way. Dr. Olivia Hooker, 100-Year-Old Survivor Of The “Black Wall Street” Massacre, Recounts Her Experience

Today, when Black people talk about economic disenfranchisement, the sentiment is often met with the argument that Blacks should pull themselves up by their bootstraps or stop “being lazy.” In reality though, there were many Blacks, after the abolition of slavery who did just that. And instead of being commended for their efforts, their homes and businesses were bought out or, in most cases, burned down. It happened to a Black enclave called Seneca Village in what is now Central Park. It certainly happened throughout the south. And perhaps, most famously, in Tulsa, Oklahoma in what was known as Black Wall Street, the wealthiest Black community in the United States at the time… Dr. Olivia Hooker was one of the survivors of this racially motivated attack, which she refuses to call a riot. Hooker, who is now 100, was just six-years-old when her community was burned down, destroyed forever. According to The Atlantic, the new technology will provide banks with a platform to review your Facebook friends, and if too many of them have poor credit, the bank can reject your application… The patent reads: When an individual applies for a loan, the lender examines the credit ratings of members of the individual’s social network who are connected to the individual through authorized nodes. If the average credit rating of these members is at least a minimum credit score, the lender continues to process the loan application. Otherwise, the loan application is rejected… Aaron Rieke, the director of tech policy at Upturn, says that it’s unlikely Facebook will make this feature available to financial institutions anytime in the near future… “It would really surprise me if they decided to get into the credit-scoring business, just because I think that’s going to make people feel panicked and uncomfortable.” [ MadameNoire ] “Native American” Dartmouth College Director Removed From Position Following Suspicion About Ancestry It looks like Rachel Dolezal has a spirit animal, and her name is Susan Taffe Reed. Hinge Study Provides The Best Opening Lines To Use On Dating Apps

[According] to a recent study conducted by the Hinge dating app, lame opening lines might actually be the cause of one’s uneventful online dating life. To test this theory, the Hinge copywriting team compiled a list of more than 100 opening lines that they considered to be cool and creative and randomly sent them out to 22% of Hinge members. The company’s engineers measured response rates to each message to determine which openers worked best and after 8 million views, they began to notice a trend. According to the survey, men are 98% more likely to respond to private messages with assertive openers… Women, however, are 40% more likely to respond to openers about food. Hiring managers do the same thing, browsing through candidates’ anonymized profiles and culling information about their professional backgrounds and credentials. Notifications are sent right to your phone whenever an interested employer likes your professional profile.” [ Madamenoire ] Brooklyn’s Susannah Mushatt Jones Is The World’s Oldest Person Susannah Mushatt Jones, confirmed by the Guinness World Records organization as the oldest living person in the world this past June, celebrated her 116th birthday on Monday privately in Brooklyn… Jones was born July 6, [1899] in Alabama, as child of a sharecropper and a granddaughter to former slaves. According to Guinness, Jones moved north to New Jersey in 1922 after graduating high school. She then moved into New York where she worked as a child care provider and housekeeper. Jones retired from work in 1965, and settled in Brooklyn. Although Jones is hard of hearing and lost her eyesight, she is not beholden to a bed and can get around ably.
