New Documentary ‘Straight/Curve’ To Investigate The Controversial Body Diversity Issues In Fashion

New York City-based journalist and documentary filmmaker Jenny McQuaile has taken the leap of faith to tackle those issues head on and make a lot of designers, agents, and influencers in the industry very uncomfortable. Straight/Curve is a documentary film that deeply investigates the lack of diversity in fashion. But what began solely as a look into the evolution of the plus-size modeling world, grew to include both the thick and thin of the industry, and most importantly its praise with youth and whiteness. “Representation is important because every human being on the planet deserves to see themselves reflected and feel good about themselves,” McQuaile told Refinery 29 in a recent interview. “It is a really hard thing to wake up in the morning every single day and feel good about yourself, and it gets worse if it is compounded by the industry, and the media, and movies, and music…” Straight/Curve comes out early 2017. California Senator Pushing For “Pay Protection By Race” Law Ensuring Equal Pay For Minorities

A California State Senator wants to boost pay protection in the state by adding race to the current equal pay legislation. California already protects pay by gender, but Sen. Isadore Hall thinks a pay proposal regarding race is also necessary and is working to pass such a law. Hall’s proposal would be an addition to California’s current fair pay law that requires employers justify any pay discrepancies between men and women who do “substantially similar” work. Hall would like to add “race or ethnicity” to the requirement as well. “No one should be paid less than what they’re worth and no one should be discriminated against because of the hue of their skin or their gender,” said Hall, a Democrat, in a statement. “This is the most robust racial equality bill in the nation…” [ MadameNoire ] Would You Leave Your Job Or Get Married To Stay In A Relationship With A Co-Worker? Finding love out here is hard. The only thing harder? Finding a good job. So what would you do if you ended up in a romantic relationship with a really great person who just happened to work with you, only to have your job tell you that said relationship goes against their policy, which prohibits dating between co-workers? And to make matters worse, what if they said that in order for you to have your relationship and not have to hide it, one of you would have to leave the company? So yes, it’s a complicated situation indeed when two parties just so happen to fall in love in the workplace. Or even just “like.” The desire for employers to avoid in-office conflict is real… [ MadameNoire ] Spike Lee Threw A Brooklyn Block Party In Remembrance Of Prince After news of the passing of Prince hit the airwaves yesterday (April 21) the outpouring of condolences and praise for the man who transcended his musical generation immediately and appropriately followed. While some places held Prince tributes, Spike Lee took his eulogy a step further and spread his love the Brooklyn way by throwing a mini block party in the Fort Greene neighborhood for the man who personified the word “cool.” The Do The Right Thing director took to his Instagram page to announce the gathering proclaiming “We will dance, sing, and should to his music. Wear something purple.” And wear purple they did. Thousands of Prince fans and admirers gathered outside of Lee’s 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks offices where they danced and recited classics such as “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” “Little Red Corvette,” and of course, “Purple Rain…” [ HipHopWired ] Mariah Carey Dedicates “One Sweet Day” To Prince During Paris Concert [ Vibe ] Prince: Percocet Triggered OD Days Before Death [ TMZ ] Michelle Obama Wears Purple, Melts Our Grieving Hearts [ HuffingtonPost ] Fetty Wap Has An Inspiring Message (And New Song) For The Class Of 2016 [ IHeartRadio ]

Lane Bryant Ad Celebrating Plus-Size Women’s Bodies Rejected By ABC, NBC: Is It A Size Issue?

Lane Bryant is and has always been on a mission to celebrate women of all sizes. Hence, the reason they did the #ImNoAngel show around the same time Victoria’s Secret did their annual runway show. And it’s also the reason they tried to get an ad titled “This Body” aired on major networks recently. Unfortunately, it was rejected. In the ad, plus-size women, including models Ashley Graham and Precious Lee, unapologetically show off their bodies, and what they’re capable of–that includes exercising, posing, and breastfeeding–in the clip. But that was either too much for some people, or they simply didn’t like the ad, because networks, including ABC and NBC, opted against airing the spot… [ MadameNoire ] ASOS Is Selling Wedding Gown Now-And They’re All Under $500 As I said before, one of the best and probably the easiest parts of preparing for a wedding (aside from possibly testing food and desserts…yum) is finding a wedding dress. But with the cost of gowns these days, it’s not necessarily a joyous experience for everyone. Considering that ASOS has been providing some very stylish and chic clothing for women of all sizes for an affordable price over the last few years, it only makes sense that they would release a bridal collection–also for a good price. The company sells options for bridesmaids dresses and offered a marketplace for bridal vendors, but this will be the first real wedding gown (or jumpsuit, if that’s more your style) collection from them exclusively. The dresses have already started to make their debut on the site, and more are on the way. Prices range between — get this — $100 and $500… [ MadameNoire ] 6 UC Santa Cruz Students Busted In $100K Ecstasy Ring Six college students from UC Santa Cruz were busted last Friday (March 5) in a $100,000 ecstasy drug ring. School Blues: Is Your Child Being Treated And Graded Fairly?

After a particularly frustrating week with some the teaching staff at my son’s school, I happened to stumble upon a short video titled “The System of Racial Inequality.” In this just over 60 second soundbyte, a white woman, Tilman Smith, who has experience in the education system, pretty much confirmed my greatest concern with a certain race of teacher and my son. Her brief dialogue was alarming when describing the way white teachers tend to judge children based simply on race of school-aged black boys in particular. Smith gave an example and explained how white teachers would think highly of an “animated and cheeky” white boy in the class, label him “smart” and would all but dismiss his behavior because, “boys will be boys.” On the other hand, however, if a black child in the class displayed the same behavior she wouldn’t be so quick to think his “animated and cheeky” demeanor is smart but instead would raise an eyebrow and take mental note that, “I might need to keep an eye on him…” [ MadameNoire ] Would You Get A Tattoo At Whole Foods? Study: Diversity Training Makes White Men Feel Threatened

Diversity training is a term we heard quite a bit in 2015; however, a new article published by the Harvard Business Review suggests that these programs may be doing more harm than good. For starters, a study of over 700 companies in the United States found that implementing these training programs had little to no positive effects on female and minority representation. Even worse, they may even decrease representation of Black women. The study also found that these programs tend to make white men resentful of women and minorities. “We found evidence that it not only makes white men believe that women and minorities are being treated fairly—whether that’s true or not—it also makes them more likely to believe that they themselves are being treated unfairly,” authors of the report explained… [ MadameNoire ] Organizing For The New Year With P-Touch Marie Kondo’s best-selling The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up has sparked an organizing revolution with millions of Americans expected to resolve to get more organized in 2016. Black Male Professor Sues College For Racial And Gender Discrimination

When we think about discrimination directed at a person because of both their race and gender, the image of a Black man is not what usually comes to mind. And yet, that is what Brarailty “Rel” Dowdell, an independent Black filmmaker (most notable for the film Train Ride and Changing the Game) and adjunct professor at the Community College of Philadelphia might be looking to change. According to Philly.com, Dowdell recently filed a lawsuit in federal court alleging that the CCP denied him a full-time position because he was both Black and male. He also claims that none of the seven full-time faculty members hired for the English department this year were African-American men… [ MadameNoire ] Viral Tweet Raises Important Question: Why Aren’t Tampons Free? There is an interesting debate happening online about the price we pay to menstruate. It all started from a tweet, which stated: “If you can afford to give boys free condoms you can afford to give girls free tampons. Menstruation is a lot harder to refrain from than sex.”… Folks do not fully understand the abuse women, in particular, receive online just for the mere infraction of making a good point in public. Still, the tweet has sparked months of debate, particularly on the Facebook page of 99.9 FM The Sun in Canada… Those who were in support of the tweet left messages for the contrarians like this: “Condoms, lubricants, sunscreen and nicotine patches are all tax-free because they are classed as ‘important’ health goods. Why aren’t sanitary products viewed in the same light?!” [ MadameNoire ] Relive A Golden Era With The 90’s FreakNik: An Atlanta Story While tropical oases like Mexico and Florida became preferred destinations for college spring breakers, Atlanta’s annual FreakNik was the place to be for the multitude of HBCU students around the country in the 1990s. “I’m Happy That They Stuck With Those Choice” Shanice Williams Talks Plethora Of Natural Hair In “The Wiz Live”

If you looked at any of the promotional photos for “The Wiz Live,” you might have noticed that Glinda the Good Witch of the North, played by Uzo Aduba, rocked a curly blonde wig. But in the actual broadcast, Aduba’s hair was a braided, updo natural style that was elegant and regal, resembling a crown. That was no doubt intentional. In a recent interview with theGrio, Shanice Williams, who played Dorothy in the broadcast, explained the decision. “I know you saw the promo pictures for Glinda with the blonde hair, and we was like, ‘Good witch doesn’t have to have blonde hair, she can have her natural braided up hair, like an African-American queen.’ I’m happy that they stuck with those choices. It added to her character. She’s just funky, modern and fierce.”… [ MadameNoire ] Working While Black: My Coworker Keeps Using The N Word As told to Veronica Wells This school year, I started working as a music teacher for this charter school in Brooklyn. She was going on and on and I was tuning in and out, when I heard her say,” You know, and I’m saying to this guy, ‘Yo my n-gga you need to…” She said it so quickly, that I brushed it off, figuring I’d misheard her. The AJC’s findings were alarming and highlighted a possible link between police and the improper use of force. From the AJC: Nearly half the 184 Georgians shot and killed by police since 2010 were unarmed or shot in the back, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Channel 2 Action News investigation has found. Those findings emerged from the most extensive review of police shootings ever undertaken in Georgia, and cast doubt on claims by police that deadly force was always justified. The AJC and Channel 2 reported in October that every police shooting case since 2010 had been deemed lawful in the state’s criminal justice system. “So many of these cases involve somebody being shot in the back. It’s very, very troubling,” said Philip Stinson, a nationally recognized expert on police shootings and misconduct from Bowling Green State University, who reviewed the AJC/Channel 2 findings…” HipHopWired ] Is Rihanna Releasing ‘Anti’ Before Christmas? Black Student Group Demands Univ. Of California Divest From Prisons

Higher education has always been promoted as the best way to address most, if not all, of the Black community’s social and economic ills. But what if our personal quest for empowerment is actually helping to drive the school-to-prison pipeline? It is a question that some college students at the University of California have begun weighing and organizing around. More specifically, the student group, which calls itself the Afrikan Black Coalition (ABC), released a report last month on its website, revealing how the UC system, which includes 10 campuses across the state, is “an indirect investor of private prisons through mutual funds-managed by outside investment bankers.” Well, according to the ABC report, the UC system has allegedly invested $25 million in both the Corrections Corporation of America and private prison provider The Geo Group…In response to its own findings, the student group has decided to take action against the university… [ MadameNoire ] NYU Admin Prospective Student: If You Can’t Afford $65 Application Fee How Will You Pay $60K Tuition?
