Jeremy Renner Calls Oscar Nomination ‘Fantastic’

‘I’m pretty overwhelmed,’ he said of his best supporting actor nod for ‘The Town.’ By Jocelyn Vena Jeremy Renner Photo: Bryce Vickmark/Getty Images The Ben Affleck-directed Boston crime flick “The Town” may have only received one Oscar nomination , but Jeremy Renner admits he’s pretty excited to be acknowledged for his supporting part in the film. The nod comes a year after Renner received an Academy Award nomination for his leading role in “The Hurt Locker.” “It’s pretty fantastic. I’m pretty overwhelmed,” he told the “Today” show hosts on Tuesday morning (January 25), when he called in from Vancouver, Canada, just moments after learning of his Academy Award nom . Renner added that the morning program’s crew was his good luck charm, since he also appeared on the show after last year’s Oscar nominees were revealed. When asked who he planned to bring to the ceremony this year, the actor explained that he didn’t want to mess with a winning formula and would be accompanied by his mother for a second straight year. “I don’t think I’m gonna change a thing,” he said. “If it’s not broken …” Renner admitted that he took in a lot of Boston to prepare for his role as James Coughlin in the gritty flick. “Whole lot of places,” he said of the bars he hung out in the city. “They helped me along for sure.” Competing against Renner for the Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role honor this year are Christian Bale for “The Fighter,” John Hawkes for “Winter’s Bone,” Mark Ruffalo for “The Kids Are All Right” and Geoffrey Rush for “The King’s Speech.” Renner lost out in the best actor category last year to to Jeff Bridges , who took home the prize for his role in “Crazy Heart.” However, “The Hurt Locker” did walk away with the best picture award. Judge Orders Conrad Murray to Stand Trial in Death of Michael Jackson, Suspends Doctor’s License

Dr. Conrad Murray will be tried in the death of Michael Jackson. Judge Michael Pastor said sufficient evidence was presented at the preliminary hearing. While completely expected, this marks a significant development, as the case against Murray on involuntary manslaughter charges proved compelling. Deputy D.A. David Walgren told the judge in his closing argument that, “It was not Michael Jackson’s time to go” and that Conrad Murray is responsible. As expected, Dr. Murray will stand trial for MJ’s demise . “Michael Jackson is not here today because of the negligence and reckless acts of Dr. Murray,” said Walgren of the defendant, who sat stone-faced. Walgren said Murray cared more about hiding evidence than helping MJ. Judge Pastor’s ruling followed a six-day preliminary hearing in which more than 20 witnesses were called. Murray’s medical license was also suspended. Murray’s lawyer, Ed Chernoff, tells TMZ , “We are disappointed but not surprised. We knew we would be in trial and that’s where we’re going to end up.” Chernoff’s defense theory, that Michael Jackson killed himself , has not fully been extrapolated upon, but he did put out feelers last week and this week. The D.A. appears ready for it, however, calling a doctor who says that even if Jackson administered the fatal dose, it’s still homicide and Murray’s fault. Judge Michael Pastor ordered the suspension as a condition to Dr. Murray’s bail. The Medical Board of California asked for the suspension repeatedly. Dr. Murray has 24 hours to notify the medical boards in Texas and Nevada, where he was licensed to practice up until now, of Judge Pastor’s decision. Murray’s team says he needs to work to afford counsel, and believes the move is a power play designed to take away his right to defend himself. Not likely, as the evidence against him suggests gross mistreatment. It also wasn’t revoked, but suspended. If he were acquitted, he’d get it back. It is worth noting that Murray is still innocent until proven guilty and convicted by a jury of his peers. All this did was establish that a trial is warranted. What do you think? Dr. Conrad Murray …

I’ve seen her in movies.’ ‘Well, you think you can get an autograph?’ I’m like, ‘Oh my god.'” Krepelka is a sports agent who resides in Boston, meaning he and McCarthy have to make like Up in the Air and meet in both cities to “make it work,” she says.

Bradley Manning’s Health is Deteriorating

As Julian Assange emerged from his nine-day imprisonment, there were renewed concerns about the physical and psychological health of Bradley Manning, the former US intelligence analyst suspected of leaking the diplomatic cables at the centre of the storm. Manning, who was arrested seven months ago, is being held at a military base in Virginia and faces a court martial and up to 52 years in prison for his alleged role in copying the cables. His friends and supporters also claim they have been the target of extra-judicial harassment, intimidation and outright bribery by US government agents. According to David House, a computer researcher from Boston who visits Manning twice a month, he is starting to deteriorate. “Over the last few weeks I have noticed a steady decline in his mental and physical wellbeing,” he said. “His prolonged confinement in a solitary holding cell is unquestionably taking its toll on his intellect; his inability to exercise due to [prison] regulations has affected his physical appearance in a manner that suggests physical weakness.” Manning, House added, was no longer the characteristically brilliant man he had been, despite efforts to keep him intellectually engaged. He also disputed the authorities' claims that Manning was being kept in solitary for his own good. “I initially believed that his time in solitary confinement was a decision made in the interests of his safety,” he said. “As time passed and his suicide watch was lifted, to no effect, it became clear that his time in solitary – and his lack of a pillow, sheets, the freedom to exercise, or the ability to view televised current events – were enacted as a means of punishment rather than a means of safety.” More at the link… added by: jubal

‘Black Swan,’ ‘Social Network’ Lead Early Nominations

‘Inception,’ ‘True Grit,’ ‘127 Hours’ and more are already being honored by critics associations. By Kara Warner Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight With Golden Globe nominations on the way Tuesday, the 2010 awards season has officially kicked into high gear. But the Globe nods aren’t the first; the American Film Institute and a handful of critics groups have already released their faves. In looking at overall Best Film/Picture categories, the AFI and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards selected the same nine films: “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “Inception,” “127 Hours,” “The Social Network,” “The Town,” “Toy Story 3,” “True Grit” and “Winter’s Bone.” AFI recognized “The Kids Are All Right” as its 10th movie in the category, while the Broadcast Film Critics Association selected “The King’s Speech.” It’s worth mentioning that as has been custom for the past few years during awards season, independent films generally garner plenty of nomination love. “Black Swan,” “127 Hours,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “Winter’s Bone” and “Rabbit Hole” are the buzzy Indies this season. With regard to regional critics’ picks in the same category, there are emerging patterns for awards-season front-runners. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle all named “The Social Network” as the best film of the year, along with David Fincher as best director. Speaking of the directing category and the aforementioned critics groups, Fincher will likely compete with four of the following Best Director nominees from the BFCA: Darren Aronofsky, “Black Swan”; Christopher Nolan, “Inception”; Tom Hooper, “The King’s Speech”; Danny Boyle, “127 Hours”; and Ethan and Joel Coen, “True Grit.” With regard to acting nods, the field has not been whittled down quite as specifically as the film and director categories. Standouts so far include Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech” — named Best Actor by the NY and L.A. critics, as well as a nominee from the BFCA along with Jesse Eisenberg (named Best Actor by the National Board of Review) for “The Social Network” and Jeff Bridges for “True Grit.” Other contenders include Aaron Eckhart in “Rabbit Hole,” James Franco in “127 Hours” and Ryan Gosling in “Blue Velvet.” The Best Actress category is similarly conflicted thus far, with Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”), Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”) and Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone”) among the early favorites, but a front-runner has yet to emerge. Other ladies on the short lists: Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole” and Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine.” These lists add to the recognition already announced by the National Board of Review, the Independent Spirit Awards, the European Film Awards (at which Roman Polanski’s “Ghost Writer” was the standout) and the British Independent film awards. What do you think of this season’s awards darlings so far? Let us know your picks in the comments! WaPo Thumps 2012 Hopeful Rick Santorum as ‘Notorious for His Moral Pronouncements’

Washington Post political reporter Karen Tumulty explored the dark-horse presidential explorations of former Sen. Rick Santorum on the front page of Friday's paper. It was a fairly respectful story until it came time to discuss the former senator's “notorious” moral statements, and how he still “breathes fire” on occasion: Santorum was notorious for his moral pronouncements . He contended, for instance, that Boston's liberal culture was partly to blame for the sex-abuse scandal in the Catholic Church there, and suggested that lifting antiquated state sodomy laws would sanction bestiality — or as he put it, “man on dog.” Santorum still breathes fire . In his evolving stump speech, he frames the prospect of Obama's reelection in near-apocalyptic terms: “Democracy and freedom will disappear.” His agenda consists of stopping pretty much everything that has been set in motion in the past two years, starting with the overhaul of the nation's health-care system. read more
