Jeremy Renner Cast In ‘The Bourne Legacy’

Film is not set to include Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Getty Images After months of speculation, Universal has officially named actor Jeremy Renner as the star of “The Bourne Legacy.” According to Deadline , the two-time Oscar nominee (for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town”) is expected to “sign on quickly” to play a new character in the spin-off film written and directed by “Bourne” screenwriter Tony Gilroy. Renner will reportedly play an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Jason Bourne, memorably played by Matt Damon in the first three hit films. For those who have been following the ups and downs of the “Bourne” saga, Renner’s casting is not at all a surprise, given reports that leaked earlier this month saying he had been offered the role. The actor beat out a slew of talented and buzzworthy contenders, which reportedly included Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund and Luke Evans. Gilroy has previously stated that although Damon’s Bourne will not be a part of “Legacy,” he has left the door open for future Bourne-centric films down the road. “The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” Gilroy said of his story for “Legacy.” “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy. … The world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].” Production is said to begin in September. REVIEW: Unknown Actually Just Tired, Familiar Same-Old From Liam Neeson

When someone makes a list of the most influential movies of the last decade — has EW done that yet? — The Bourne Identity should get its own category, not only because of the ruthless efficiency of its action sequences but also for the detached competence of its star, Matt Damon, whose deportment while stalking the gray, shadowy streets of West Europe suggested a man on a mission while lost in a dream. In the intermittently diverting Unknown — there could also be a compilation of movies with that title — Liam Neeson borrows from the Bourne playbook, as an American stranded in mysterious Berlin, his brow knitted even deeper by the fact that, after recovering from an accident, he’s been replaced in his life by someone claiming to be him.

Matt Damon Says ‘No’ To ‘Bourne’

Green Zone star Matt Damon has ruled out appearing in a fourth Bourne flick and said he’s “just saying no.” The 39-year-old actor took on the role of agent Jason Bourne in the first three movies but said he isn’t interested in coming back for a fourth and believes the film needs to take a different direction according to an interview with Parade.com. “I think there’s a good way to do a prequel with someone else, but not me. What any studio is interested in is making a franchise like Bourne an evergreen that can just go on and on. With me playing him, Bourne got his memory back three times. So I don’t think anybody wants to see me say ‘I don’t remember’ again.’ But you could do a prequel with another actor being the first Bourne before his identity gets passed on to me. In fact, why not two or three? As for me coming back to do him again, I’m just saying no.” Sounds like Damon wants to turn the Bourne Franchise in to James Bond .
